My wife and I were in town and decided to stop by here (and the place "down the street") to do a little Tomato Pie taste-off. The slices here are pretty substantial and aren't very expensive. We picked out our pieces (I went for a corner slice) and as we checked out I noticed several boxes behind the cashier marked "extra crispy". When asked, I was told that they had been left in the oven too long and got a little dark. Man, I wish those had been out for sale as they sound perfect. We took our pizza to the Zoo and ate it there. They were wrapped up in plastic to keep things clean but once unwrapped it because a tomato mess. But it was good. Their sauce was very sweet, which I enjoyed for one piece though if eating a lot (put your hands up if you fall into that category) it would get cloying. The crust was as chewie as that pilot on the Falcon, and a sprinkling of parm cheese gave it a bit of salt. I wish I could have toasted it in my oven at home and sprinkled some more parm on top, but eating it cold at the zoo out of the plastic was still pretty good. As a comparison to the pizza sold next door, I thought this was better than their "regular" tomato pie but not as good as their "spicy" tomato pie. We looked in their store but couldn't shop there as we had other things to do. But, we definitely will be back! read more

I asked for a saucy inside piece and they delivered. My piece of tomato pie was saucy, sweet, thin and chewy. It was almost a little too chewy since it was difficult to bite with out sauce going everywhere. Still worth it. I preferred this slice to the other local competitor down the street although I'm not sure why. Im a sauce girl but normally I don't go for sweet. So I have never heard of a tomato pie. Have eaten at several places here to include pizza, seafood and burgers. Stopped in for lunch and it was amazing. if you want a slice, go straight to the register, that's where you get them not at the deli counter. They aren't warm and toasty, they are wrapped in plastic wrap and I'm assuming to be taken home and toasted, because honestly, the way it comes I don't get the hype. It's just a doughy, thick piece of wet crust with sauce and Parmesan. The sauce is good, but again, if this is how everyone eats it (cold), forget about it. The 6" Italian (have to order at the counter or call in) was ok. It was mostly ham and the sub roll was eh, ok. Didn't have a super fresh baked flavor to it. The prices are great and the service is straight forward. I wouldn't say super friendly, but definitely not rude. They get the job done as quickly as possible. read more

Finally was able to come back to visit Utica and had to pick me up their tomato pie (10$) and it was as good as I remembered. The sauce, crust and cheese combination is alway a hit. I will start this as I always do by saying that I don't give out five stars unless I am really blown away. This is one of my favorite places to stop for a sub sandwich in the Utica area. The sandwich is packed with meat and the rolls are huge. The sandwich's are nothing fancy but they don't need to be they taste good! A half will fill you but the whole is the way to go for $6. They make the sandwich in just a minute or two. They have a huge variety of deli meats, cheeses, olives and sides. The tomato pie they make is top 3 in Utica. Don't let the description of "Meat Shops," fool you. Like so many other Utica institutions, Roma is a hybrid, straddling the line between a bakery and a deli. When you open the door, you're greeted with the smell of fresh Italian bread, followed by scents of garlic, herbs, and oils. When I return home to the fair city of Utica, stocking up at Roma is always on my agenda. Roma represents one of several sides of the great tomato pie debate. Literally everyone in the City of Utica has a favorite. Do you prefer a sweeter sauce or do you like the tang of the tomato? Do you prefer a piece with crust or a piece cut from the center of the pie? East Utica or West Utica? Old Utica or new Utica? You must ask yourself these questions. I stand firmly with Roma as having the best tomato pie in the city, in addition to so many other things. Quarts of sauce, homemade meatballs and sausage, fresh baked bread, homemade macaroni, Italian meats and cheeses, and biscotti are all essential items. Roma also carries a wide variety of Cora Imports products, a local purveyor of spices and oils. My favorite specialty item is the containers of cheese curds spiced with garlic, oil, and fresh chopped herbs. It really doesn't get any better than that. I was up in Utica for a friend's "Stag" party and his Mom greeted us after a long night's drive with some tomato pie. We were starving so at that point anything would do...but it wasn't Roma (which I'd never had before). He told me, "wait until you try this tomorrow before making any judgements." So we walked into Roma, not all that hungry, but in the mood to try what my friend said was "legit" tomato pie. We walked into the meat shop and it wasn't fancy, but you could tell from the looks of what they had around this was one of those authentic places people in Utica rave about. The man behind the counter had the most incredibly-trimmed mustache I'd ever seen. He sold us a small box of tomato pie ($9), but small isn't the right way to describe it. For three average sized men, it was plenty. We started to dig in while driving on our way to Turning Stone Casino and we were about to do to that box of tomato pie could only be described as a massacre. I don't know where this man grows his tomatoes, but Roma's sauce is other-worldly. It was sweet and dusted with parmesan cheese and sprinkled herbs, but not so much as to overwhelm the pie. My teeth sunk right through the sweet layer of tomato sauce and into the dough, which was incredibly soft. I realized that the dried up tomato pie we'd had the night before paled in comparison to what we were scarfing down in the car that fateful day. I was super careful with every bite, not because I was trying to keep the car clean, but instead to preserve every last ounce of tomato sauce heaven. There was no way I could live with dropping any of it. I'd never forgive myself. The inner slices (the pie is cut Sicilian-style into tiny squares) are the best part, although the corner/edge slices are amazing as well. You can't have just one slice of a Roma tomato pie either... Fast forward to after the casino. We proceeded to dig into the box once more and before we knew it, we'd consumed enough lycopene for an entire month's worth. If only we'd have thought to buy it in bulk and bring some back to Manhattan with us, I'd probably be eating more of it as I write this. IT'S THAT GOOD! ...Still full. Call ahead and order yours because no chance you're walking in and grabbing a slice or a pie on a Sunday without placing one. Additional highlights: anything in the freezer case. Tomato sheet pie for 8 bucks...which is kind of typical in Utica. Most of the places I've been to in this town mastered the art of excellent product and a dirt cheap price. There are so many of these Mom and Pop places in Utica, which really bucks the trend of what is happening nationally. Roma has a nice selection of cheeses and Italian imported goods. Traveling from our kids in Boston back home to Rochester we stopped in on Columbus day to try out their Tomato pie and Sweet Sausage.. Along with my wife, we were taken back 40 years to our childhood enjoying the food from our heritage along and all the baked goods from the various Italian bakery's in Rochester NY. In all cases, the Tomato pie was outstanding and the sausage was rich with flavor. From here on as we travel to Boston and back we will be stopping both ways to take Tomato pie to Boston and back.
