On our way across New York we got to Johnstown about lunchtime, and were in the mood for a bit of lasagna. What do you know? Right at the corner was Romana's Italian Kitchen! Right at the end of the strip in the shopping center, walk in and there's a huge statue of a Roman! Who knew? Friendly people, reasonably quick service, and the food was just fine. No, it's nothing special. Sure, the wine jugs on the counter were Carlo Rossi, etc. The Pita Pizza on the kids' menu was a big hit with our son. The garlic bread was a little greasy. The lasagna sauce was a bit on the sweet side. Still, it's a great alternative to the chains that are proliferating like an invasive species. And they don't have any TVs, so you can see and hear your dining companions. If you're in the area and hungry, go to Romana's. Support local.

Greek owned; hardly Italian. My Italian wife used to call their sauce, "Campbell's soup."

I have fond memories of eating the Sicilian-style pizza as a child and then as an adult, out on my own before I moved away. Coming back at almost 50, I was just hoping the food would kind of be the same, but it was like a taste of childhood. The pizza is the best I've found in Gloversville and Al's is still Al's. Either you're a local and know the spot, have been told about the spot, or did a search online because they pizza shop itself has no sign to lead the way. Their bread is also phenomenal and exactly like my youth as well. Thank you for the trip down memory lane. Your pizza is still in my top three ever eaten! We'll be back!

Al's Pizzeria should be renamed "Under Construction Pizzeria & Deli." This Gloversville institution…read moredefinitely as a lot of character. The interior of this cozy old pizza shop looks as though it's been under renovations for quite a while. The menu boards, fixtures, small grocery shelves are covered in plastic, brown paper/cardboard taped to the floor, and cardboard shaped cutouts hang on the walls and labeled with black marker with what's supposed to be hanging including clock, pictures, and several G'ville sports plaques. There are current NFL schedules taped on the glass counter for the Giants, Jets, and Bills. However, there are outdated The X-Factor/Pepsi promos in the store and depicts two ex-judges (Paula & Nicole) from the first season. Al's Pizzeria sells round and sheet pizzas, pizza slices, subs, cold salads, dinners, and homemade bread loaves at fair prices. In the cooler, bottled Pepsi products, cold beers, and milk are offered too. I ordered a 12 cut Sausage Sheet Pizza, which was ready in about 30 minutes as promised. I used an Entertainment coupon and the pizza was just under $8 with tax. The rectangular thin crust pizza had a light airy, but firm crust with thick crisp edges, ideal for breaking off into breadsticks. The pizza had a good amount of thick tomato sauce, sprinkled with not too much mozzarella cheese and chunks of spicy ground Italian sausage. I enjoyed this good family style sausage pizza over several days for snacks and lunches. I would probably return here again if I wanted inexpensive slices of pizza, but I'm crossing my fingers with a small glimmer of hope that the pizza shop may be fully renovated on a future visit. As a previous reviewer noted several years ago, the shop was under construction then and it's still under construction today. I wouldn't hold my breath though.

This is such a shame and was all the more noticeable because they did pretty much everything else better than any Subway shops I've been to in recent years. My workmate and I ordered two footlongs online for pickup. Subs were handily ready on the pickup rack, so it was easy, although I'm kind of ambivalent about not having any human contact in the process. We both quickly recognised the stale bread which was hard, smelled stale, and rough to chew, so I ended up breaking off chunks when I had the second half of my sub later in the day. Otherwise, veggies were crisp for a change, tuna appeared to have been made according to the formula, and toppings overall weren't skipped over. This last point has been a major issue with almost all Subway shops in recent years. I was pleased enough overall with my first time that I'd be open to trying again. But if I'm served another sandwich on a stale bread, I doubt I would come back. Until then, I hope the crew keep improving to serve fresh, carefully made subs like I trust they can.

Offered to toast my bread with nothing on it, a first since the employees usually skip it and go straight to vegetables. He was also willing to change his gloves before finishing my sub, understanding there was a food allergy involved and continued to take great care not to cross contaminate my food. My mom and I had the whole place to ourselves, so the ambiance was quite relaxed and definitely quiet.
