Back again at one of our local Italian spots in Amsterdam. My wife and I were delighted to see some menu and drink changes as well as some work updating the inside. Service is always good here and the waitresses are very nice and friendly which makes this cozy whole in the wall spot an enjoyable experience. If you like homemade bread with your pasta this is the place for you! Giant pieces of thick buttered bread with the homemade taste that you want. Calamari was on par as well. This was our first time getting the pan pizza, the sauce is always good at Russo's but this pizza was hard to eat because the cheese and toppings kept falling off. I have wanted to come here for years. Friends frequently bring Russo's pizza to get-togethers and I think it is great. Plus, it is located right across the street from a public park and railroad tracks which made it an easy option for lunch while trainspotting. Finally, the stars aligned and I came here with my wife and son during vacation. After ordering online, we rolled our baby stroller across the tracks and down the street and went right in. Once we looked around and saw the charm of the place (and the table by the window overlooking the tracks) we decided to stay. It is a fun atmosphere and apparently has been here a long time. But enough about that... how was the pizza? Delicious! We ordered one of their 12-cut pan pizza which is what I would describe as "Sheet pizza." You know the type... rectangular and cooked in a pan with copious amounts of sauce and cheese and toppings and cut into squares. It is served at church events, sleepover parties, etc. And I love it. And let me tell you, Russo's does it well. Their crust was very thick on the edges but nice and chewy in the middle. As a "corner guy", their crust was perfect and gave me something to gnaw on. Their sauce was a bit sweet and heavily applied, which my wife likes. The cheese browned nicely and formed crispy bits here and there. Their pepperoni was salty and greasy, and their sausage was definitely not the cheap stuff from a bag. Did I mention this wasn't a healthy pizza? Forks and knives, while optional, are certainly recommended. There was enough pizza for four normal people, or two with plenty of leftovers. Some of it even made it home that afternoon without getting snarfed! Their menu has a lot of regular items, and it would be nice to come back and enjoy a regular meal here. Russo's Bar & Grill, A little treasure of Amsterdam! Definitely recommend! At the time of writing this review I work in Johnstown, so I always passed by this place on my way to work. I never gave it a second glance until my co-worker told me their food was amazing. He was right. I'm a bit of a foodie, so I decided to give a good amount of their menu a try, and I've attached pictures below. It's an Italian place, so I gave their: Chicken Sorrentino, pizza, burger, and garlic parmesan wings a try. As for their bar selection I had a Hazy IPA and a Cosmo. It was all delicious. The chicken and eggplant were perfectly cooked in the Sorrentino, with a generous amount of sauce. The linguine had no salt, which may dissuade you, but I'm not a big salt person. Their pizza is on the thicker side, but it had great flavor. The Genco burger was certainly a treat, in-house made bread definitely gave it a unique flair and tasted great. As for the wings, I put their wings on par with the ones at the 518 grille, also in Amsterdam, they are on the crisper side, with less residual oil. So, it's a matter of preference. I couldn't decide which wings were better! This restaurant certainly gives you a lot of value and flavor for the price you pay. It definitely earns a spot in the "clean plate club." I went to Russo's with my friends tonight for drinks and dinner. I am in the area visiting for a few days. Russo"s was one of my favorite spots to eat before moving to Hawaii and tonight's visit did not disappoint. I ordered the hamburger steak topped with mushrooms and gravy served with french fries and gravy. I asked my burger to be cooked medium rare and it was cooked to perfection. Our bartender Frank did a fantastic job taking care of us. I have always recommended Russo's to people and tonight's visit just confirmed why. I've only been here once. The place itself is comfortable in a homey kind of way - all dark wood and family (I guess) photos on the walls. I had the eggplant parm - one of the dishes by which I judge Italian restaurants - and it was quite a bit less excellent than I expected from reading the history of Michael and the restaurant. A good-sized portion, but it tasted like it had been frozen and thawed; no better than the eggplant Parm I've had at any diner. We had a good time though, and - aside from my meal taking about 10 minutes longer to arrive at the table then those of the nine people I was eating with, which I'm sure was not her fault - our waitress did an outstanding job of managing not only our table of 10 but an otherwise full restaurant. So overall, a pleasant enough experience (mostly due to the people I was with) but not a restaurant I will likely seek out in the future. read more

My go to pizza joint in Amstedam Plain and simple they donit differently! Sauce on the top and cheese on the bottom. The sausage is homemade and an excellent chiice for topping. I also love that they will make yoh and individual size pie that come in a pie tin! You cant be the ambiance or the employees who have been there as long as ive been going there. I've been going to Russo's for years! The Russo's burger is my go to (simply because it's served on there bread ). There homemade pizza is a close second, with a side of Italian dressing for dipping (don't knock it till you try it). All in all, it's really great food no matter what you get. read more

Probably one of the best pizza places in this little town of Amsterdam, NY. We only ordered a large pizza; sausage & mushrooms on the whole pizza & 1/2 anchovy with the other 1/2 onion. The anchovy side was the bomb & we couldn't get enough. A perfect amount of anchovies and it just added that something special. The onion side was good but just not over the top. Maybe a white onion would have been a better choice, this was cooked with a Red onion. I still give it a 5 star rating!!! Delicious thick pan baked pizza! A real unique flavor! We read the reviews and asked a local about this restaurant. What a disappointing lunch. The chicken orzo soup has no orzo. The eggplant parmigiana sandwich was awful. Overcooked overbreaded eggplant. Tasteless mozzarella. The Italian bread weird and butter also poor quality. Ingredients in the Sicilian salad tasteless. I visited Russo's for the 1st time a couple of weeks ago for my wife's birthday with family and my experience was not good! I heard all the rave about Russo's and not impressed at all, had better Italian food in Brooklyn, from my wife and sadly from Olive Garden. The pizza and bread were not all that and my server was slow at SHIT which I had to keep reminding her for more water, she probably was getting it from outside since there was a storm. Russo's is better off just being a bar instead of a restaurant, the guys at the bar were loud obviously drunk and very vulgar. This place is clearly not for families with children. I noticed the manager or owner by the kitchen window cursing up a storm at the employee and did not apologize but kept going, WTF! I would not recommend Russo's to anyone, just save your money or go to Olive Garden or Macaroni Place or make it at home. read more

Not recommended for take out. The stuffed shells were sauce-less they were supposed to have a meatball (none included) and they were covered in super cheap mozzarella that was so over cooked it was solid on the bottom of the pan. The baked ziti was also over cooked, dry and with the same cheap - super salty mozzarella. The calamari was good tho and the garlic bread was decent. At best it was mediocre Italian take out for high end Italian prices. Maybe eating at the restaurant would Prove me well wrong. Heard nothing but great reviews so I won't let a poor take out experience on a Tuesday negate my willingness to give it another shot. Best part of the take out dinner was definitely the bottle of 2013 Joseph Carr Cabernet, the company I shared it with and the fact that I got to eat in my pajamas. Found this place last minute and thank god we did! The food is amazing! We ordered the gravy fries as an appetizer and they came out in less than 5 minutes! Firstly, my family and I have been coming to this restaurant since before I could talk. To this day, the service is always phenomenal, the food is great, and the place is always clean. I recently took my SO here for the time. As soon as we walked in we were told to sit where we wanted and someone would be with us shortly. The waitress was fast and knowledgeable. For those of you that haven't been here before, the bread is homemade and it's the best in the area hands down. Their linguine with clam sauce is what we got, but you can basically put a blindfold on and point at the menu and what they bring you will be amazing. Anyway, my SO and I ate until we were just about to explode and the waitress boxed our food up for us. We're still eating leftovers and it's been three days since we went there. I basically just wanted to give a shoutout to the whole staff for making dining enjoyable and continuously making my nights out better. We will certainly be eating here again soon! read more

I recently went here for lunch with some friends and was disappointed. The restaurant was so cold you needed to keep a coat on to stay warm. Many patrons did not remove their coats. Our waiter said it was because the cold air from outside comes up by the wall at the booths. I find this hard to believe that was the reason. I cannot give the food a good rating either as I ordered the Hot Eggplant Sandwich and it was not even warm. I would have sent it back but that would have prolonged sitting there freezing. We stopped for lunch today while on a little day-road trip from New Hartford. Being from the Utica area where there numerous fine Italian eateries and having grown up with an Italian mom and grandma, I'm a bit of a snob about red sauce Italian places. My girlfriend is a talented at home chef as well so our standards are high. I noticed Russo's neon sign on rte 5 and I thought it would worth a shot. We were not disappointed. The Antipasto was well done, with plenty of extra salami and provolone, olives, tomatoes, just the right amount of red onion, fresh lettuce and cucumbers. The Italian dressing was perfect. Not too much vinegar or garlic. We asked for anchovies and roasted peppers and they were generous with the extras. My girl had their seafood bisque and I got the pasta fagioli. Both were excellent. The bisque was rich and delicate at the same time and they were generous with the shrimp and clams. The fagioli was different from any of the variations I had before, but equally as satisfying. Some fagiolis are in a red sauce base and others in a white one. This was in a hearty broth with a perfect balance of pasta and beans, with some greens and fresh tomatoes. It was flavored beautifully with chunks of homemade Italian sausage. I put some grated cheese on it and it couldn't have been more delicious. We ordered cannolis and coffee for desert. Their homemade cannolis were perfect. They were so much like the ones I get the Florentine in Utica and like the kind made by my family I felt like I was at home. They drizzled some caramel syrup on them, something I had not had before. It was a perfect, subtle touch. The only disappointment was the coffee. I think that because we were there toward the end of their lunch hour the coffee tasted as though it had sat there for a while. They didn't serve half and half with the coffee so that was another let-down in an otherwise remarkable lunch with homemade style and flavor. Aside form the Coffee, I ould have given this restaurant the highest rating. And I strongly recommend it to anyone. I'm looking forward to going there for dinner to sample the entrees and wine. So, we decided to give this place another shot because we al have "off days." Sadly, I was just as disappointed, and will most likely never return. The service was better, I do give them that, but the experience still was less than stellar. The general consensus around our table of 8 was that their food was bland. Two got the chicken parmigiana and said it was "ok", two got linguine with clams (one with red sauce, one with white), one shrimp scampi, one angel hair with marinara, and two penne vodkas. I had one of the two penne vodkas and was beyond disappointed. Mine looked runny/watery, light in color, and not at all like the other plate which was creamy and orange. Mine had some really strange taste to it, almost bitter. It tasted different than the other plate as well. Other than myself, everyone else added a ton of salt and pepper to their meals and said that they were decent afterwards. HOWEVER- I will say that I had a cup of the pasta e fagioli that was quite yummy. I slurped up the bowl. And a coupe of orders of steamed clams were also enjoyed at the table. So for this and the decent service I give 2 stars. Even with this information, our family has all agreed- next time we will go elsewhere. read more

This place serves pretty decent Italian food for Amsterdam. I come up for holidays to visit family & always make it point to try & stop this place for a meal. Drinks are soso, definitely not craft which living in Los Angeles, are plenty. I'm not a super fan of the bread, it should be garlic bread and not Italian bred with butter but it is tasty.
