I read some reviews and feel like most people think the same thing about the Bara Chirashi Donburi so I'll keep it succinct: great presentation and a great variety of ingredients, but they don't combine for a cohesive dish whatsoever. A good example is what is a random piece of beef doing at the front of my dish? I did enjoy some of the meats like the shrimp, but I thought most of the fish wasn't super fresh or high quality. There was still some flavor though so I wouldn't say I had an unpleasant experience by any means - just probably not an experience worth $25. We went around 3pm for happy hour - service was pretty fast but that might've been because there were around 4 other people inside eating. What a VERSATILE menu! Similar to the sister restaurants, Tamari Bar and Hi-Life on Bainbridge, this restaurant was SO delicious! It's pretty small inside so it's highly recommended to make a reservation. We got seated for 6 and had to wait for a few minutes since there was a group that was close to being done. When we got to our table, we had to squeeze in the corners bc there were tables around with small space so that wasn't great but we had managed. They even have hooks to hang your coat on the walls which is super convenient. They had happy hour until 5:30pm. I got the Rondo Bento which was $17 at happy hour. It featured Rondo's famous fried chicken, fresh tuna tataki, wagyu bench cutlet (almost similar to Korean BBQ short ribs,) fresh yet tasty grilled fish (I believe this was eel) with Japanese pickles and rice! It was superb! My bf had the maze-men! Delicious too! My bf and I shared the curry donuts! These are one of a kind -- must try and if you like curry! We also had the spicy tuna crispy sushi bites! The meat is seared nicely and is fairly tender, just cut a bit too big for the don to feel optimal. Seafood is not abundant in the dish. Uni Creamy Seafood Maze Udon ($21) 4/5 "Chef choice seared fresh sashimi, uni (sea urchin) & corn creamy sauce with Japanese udon noodles topped with ikura, tobiko, kaiware radish & dried nori" Cream sauce was just like a regular cream sauce but much less thick than I was expecting. The udon noodles were thinner than other udon but cooked just right. Even with the uni toppings, the sauce didn't feel unique in that aspect. Wish there was more noodles and the sauce was thicker. Katsu Curry ($19) 3/5 "Rondo 224 Curry with fresh panko breaded tender pork cutlet topped with cabbage salad, onion pickle, ra-yu and original tonkatsu sauces" Curry was slightly on the salty side, not enough rice to combat that. The katsu was exceptional, with a very crispy shell and moist/fatty meat. Ate the curry rice with a bit of the cream udon sauce to help balance the flavors a bit and it was tastier that way. The sides included didn't help the dish much but it didn't take a way from it either. I would just get the katsu next time and skip the curry. Hojicha Tiramisu Cup 4/5 The cake was moist and the cream wasn't too sweet or buttery. It was a good palate cleanser for the end of dinner. We went on a Monday night around peak dinnertime without a reservation, and it was packed. They had two open spots at the long shared table in the middle of the restaurant, between the booths and the bar seating, so my husband and I sat across from each other. The interior of the restaurant has a very cool vibe from the unique decor (retro toys, S&B curry powder tins, fun Japanese posters), and I loved the tiles on the bar. The restaurant is well-designed to fit a good amount of people, but since it is so popular, I would probably recommend that you snag a reservation beforehand if you are visiting at a peak time/day. I ordered the unagi bara chirashi because I love eel, and my husband got the kaisen don (Monday special). Food took maybe around 20 minutes to come out, but I understand because the whole place was really busy and our food came out hot and fresh. I loved my unagi bara chirashi because the individual cubes of eel and tamagoyaki were fun to eat and made for perfect one-biters with the rice. The eel was slightly smoky/charred, fatty, and had just the right amount of sauce that went really well with the sweet egg. My husband loved his kaisen don, which was full of fresh fish and a side of clear beef broth on the side. I thought the price for everything was fair for the amount of food we got, but it's definitely not an every day splurge (although I would probably eat at Rondo daily if I could afford to/lived nearby). So worth it! I definitely can see why this place is always busy. This izakaya-style restaurant is elevated in their service and food quality but also down-to-earth, hip, and vibrant in atmosphere. Overall, the staff is prompt and accommodating. Their menu is big! So far, I have tried their $20 pitcher of sapporo beer (shared with a friend), bara chirashi donburi, and rondo deluxe bento box. Beer is beer, but I appreciated how they chilled our glasses. And the pither easily = 6 glasses ($3/glass). The beautifully arranged seafood and wagyu in the donburi are luxurious. The seafood included hamachi, ikura, spot prawn, tuna, tobiko, uni, and unagi-hopefully I didn't miss anything. This option is better than the Chef Omakase 3 or 5 since you can try a little bit of everything! Individually, each part tasted fresh. However, the salinity of the ikura and uni and the also salty dashi soy sauce that drenched the rice became overwhelming. This dish could be a 10/10 if the sauce was offered on the side. On the other hand, the bento box was perfectly delivered! I enjoyed their mix of fish, meat, veggies, and a surprise item (for me, it was short rib, which tasted like Korean kalbi). Opened during the pandemic, Rondo has been one of the standout restaurants in Capitol Hill area and has become one of the restaurant jewels in the chef-owner Makoto Kimoto's empire that once included Suika (now closed) and Tamari Bar (#1). Inspired by the "Dragon Palace" from a Japanese folktale, Rondo's menu has a heavy focus on noodles and bowls, ranging from ramen to donburi, from bento to teishoku sets. Having gone multiple times in recent trips, I can attest to the excellent food, dedicated customer service, and festive ambiance. The Japanese inspired decor is evident throughout the place. While it's not the largest interior, they've managed to do a decent job in squeezing in tables for their indoor and outdoor space. It's a tight squeeze with questionable ventilation, but the vibe has lots of energy and it's a fun place to drink and feast with friends. The cocktails we had, in addition the sake was as expected. The food on the other hand, was excellent all around. My large and hungry group and I ordered several daily specials, which included the negitoro roll ($14), the mixed fried party set ($23), and the Katie's wagyu BB bolognese ($20). The pasta dish blew us all away, so much so that we had to order it again. The butter and oyster sauce were subtle, but the creamy finish with the wagyu and porcini mushroom meat sauce was decadent. The tako wasabi ($6) was by far the most simple dish of the night, with octopus bits sitting in a wasabi based liquid to be paired with sheets of dried nori. A table favorite was also the Mr. Pork Rib ($17), which is a braised pork rib coated in a sweet balsamic glaze. I have high regard for the uni creamed croquette ($12 for 2), which was sort of like a cadberry egg if it was filled with sea urchin and corn sans chocolate, and served with a umami tarter and katsu sauce. The creamy udon was ($24) was indeed creamy, but with a nice pile of seared sashimi, uni, and some nori. It's a terrible dish to share frankly, but a nice dish for someone who wants to experience noodle slurping with additional textures. The bara chirashi donburi ($29) was the rice equivalent with a nice sized bowl of a cornucopia of gorgeous colors of raw fish. Uni fans would love the rice pairing more frankly, as it was easily the most decadent dish of the night. It was the only destination in Seattle that I've gone to multiple times during the same trip. Rondo does take reservations, but we didn't make one. Luckily, the hostess allowed our group in since there was a table available before the next reservation was coming. We ordered two Taro Mules and another drink that was exclusive to the daily special menu (I forgot what it was). I ordered the Spicy Tuna Crispy Sushi Bites for us to share. Then, my sister ordered the Deluxe Parfait for us to share. Our food and drinks were good. One of my favorite spots in the Seattle area. This is a very popular place in the Capitol Hill area and it is for very good reasons. Even though it is located in the middle of Capital Hill, there is a small parking lot that is located on the side of the building. Alternatively, taking the link is a great option because of the short walk from the link. They have a really consistent and happy hour items with really good prices. I love the spicy tuna donburi which is an amazing price during happy hour. They also have rotating daily specials which always makes this place a go to for something new. Their bento boxes are also super sharable and comes with such great variety. One of my favorite things to get here is the creamy seafood udon which is AMAZING and the Bara-chirashi donburi which is SO SO good. I have been here like more than 20 times and it is always a good choice. The service is also very quick! They are often full so more times than not, I have been sat at a communal dinning space. I would say the restaurant is a bit overwhelming at times because it does have loud music and movies playing in the background so if that is not your jam, it may be a bit much. I really liked their tatami, pickled cucumber, grilled fish, and the cream croquette. It was nice to have a variety of side dishes to try. On the other hand, karaage tasted blander than my preference and rice quality was kind of mid...? It is still sticky rice but felt like the type you prefer to use for dishes like fried rice - it was not as sticky as I wanted, a little dry, and not as shiny as other higher quality rice. right when we walked in, hit by elite vibes like excellent edm music, warm lighting, the rows of japanese whisky and cute japanese figurines decorating the perimeters. perf for hangout spot and if u wanna drink! waiters are all tatted asian-ish men that are also pretty good looking lmao, decent service. but the food omg it HITS like comfort food and also such a diverse colorful menu. our favs were the mr pork ribs so tender the meat falling off the bone, the creamy salmon uni udon was amazing soo creamy and flavorful and lightly seared salmon on top. sashimi was not bad too, we got hamachi. chicken karrage curry also quite decent, love a warm flavorful japanese curry. read more
