The waitstaff was friendly, without overbearing, and the restaurant was small, but not cramped. We had the special tameke set, chirashi bowl, chicken karaage, and house sake. Total came out to a little over $100 before tip. It was more than enough food for two people, we left feeling satiated, and with a few pieces of chicken. The quality of the fish was amazing. The chirashi bowl had generously cut pieces of a wide variety of fish, including uni and shrimp. The tameki was mostly good. There was one that had cream cheese, which I didn't love. The chicken karaage was also tasty, but the tuna chips were the standout for me. The tempura deluxe was just okay and not really my personal favorite, though others at the table really enjoyed it. Today we had a 7:30 pm reservation to celebrate my niece's 10th birthday, and it turned into a very disappointing experience. We arrived on time but it was clear there was no table available for us. When we asked the first staff member, he said he had no idea when a table would be ready and that we would just have to wait until the current guests finished eating. That's very unprofessional and rude when customers have a reservation. After waiting about 25 minutes, we asked another employee. She said the table was "almost done," but it clearly wasn't. The group we were supposedly waiting for was still celebrating a birthday, sitting and talking with no sign of leaving. She even said something like, "You know they have kids and kids don't want to stay long, maybe they'll leave soon." That comment again was very unprofessional. You can't keep taking reservations and then tell customers you have no idea when a table will be available. It's also inappropriate to speculate about when another table might leave. The way this was handled felt rude and dismissive. The worst part is that it completely ruined my niece's birthday dinner. She was very disappointed. This is very good way to get your Japanese food fix without breaking the bank. We are vegetarians, and sushi is not typically vegetarian, but restaurants are gradually recognizing that they are going to have to adapt to new diet trends in order to maximize their customer base. I would rate Sushi Nori as middling in this regard. They do have a number of vegetarian items, but we ordered almost all of them and have thus exhausted their options and therefore don't feel like we will be going back unless they rotate their offerings from time to time, even though the quality was very good. It seems like they are thinking of the one vegetarian in an otherwise non-vegetarian party, rather than attempting to attract people who are all vegetarian. First off, this is temaki sushi, not maki, so do not expect rice rolls wrapped in seaweed and cut into slices. These are open face dried seaweed sheets with the filling dished on top and served in a tray. Your fingers are going to get very dirty, and they have cute little trash receptacles on the tables to receive your used napkins and plastic seaweed wrappers. The vegetable tempura was very good, with not too much batter. The vegetarian temaki are fusion rather than traditional Japanese (which makes total sense), and I have to applaud the chef's creativity, although I felt some of the combos worked better than others. My favorites were the fried tofu one, which was "melt in your mouth," and the oshinko one, which had a superbly intriguing combination of flavors and textures. I was less enthusiastic about the cream cheese one. It might have worked in a maki roll, but in the temaki form there was simply too much filling and the cream cheese was overwhelming. The rest were satisfying but not necessarily something I would order again. Service was very good and attentive. They have a nice selection of sake, if you want to go all out (we did). The physical layout was a bit basic and disappointing. Entering the place was not an inviting experience, and everything seemed somewhat cramped and awkwardly laid out. And they need to do something about the walls. They need a fresh coat of paint (and maybe not just a single color) and some decorations. My dining partner had a seat facing one of the walls, and I did not envy him. They do take reservations, but the place is small, so if you want to maximize your chances of not having to wait and having your choice of tables, it is better to go early or late and avoid the mid-evening "rush hour" rather than make a reservation. Most of the tables are arranged in a row by the front windows and are rather close together, so it can get loud and you might have trouble hearing the conversation at your own table. Fair warning. In sum, recommended, but not overwhelmingly so, especially for vegetarians. read more

Sushi Nori is the BEST hand roll restaurant I have ever been to. All of their fish and ingredients are super fresh and they don't slack on protein (in fact the ratio of protein to rice in each is 3:1). Each roll is beautifully presented and if you order a Temaki set, they look like pieces of art or a sushi mosaic. I came here with three friends over the summer; only one of my friends had been here before. For appetizers, we ordered the SALMON CARPACCIO (+$15) and the SPICY TUNA CHIPS (+$15) to share. The SALMON CARPACCIO came with a spicy ponzu sauce which was slightly acidic to offset the fishy taste of the salmon- it was just alright in my opinion. However, the SPICY TUNA CHIPS were amazing- super crunchy seaweed chips served with a scoop of spicy tuna on top. I would 100% get the chips again, but in all honesty, we probably didn't need appetizers as I could barely finish my meal. We each opted to create our own set of 5 Temaki (rolls) each. The rolls range in price (anywhere from $5 to $25 if you want the Japanese Wagyu steak roll) and are categorized as Signature Temaki, Premium Temaki, Classic Temaki, and Vegetable. They also now serve hot items such as curry, ramen, ikura bowls, and unagi don- which I hope to try next! Anyway, for my 5 piece set, I ordered the - SCALLOP TRUFFLE ($15): if you like creamy scallops, this is the roll for you - SPICY SALMON CUCUMBER AVOCADO (+$6.50): an affordable roll with just the right amount of kick. - SNOW CRAB MIX AVOCADO TEMPURA SHRIMP (+$8): this was basically a tempura California roll with a lot more filling than rice! Comes with huge slices of fresh avocado on top. - SALMON IKURA (+$12): super fresh and oily salmon roe (eggs) - and the SPICY HAMACHI CUCUMBER RICE CRACKER (+$7): this was the most memorable and unique of the rolls i ordered as I've never had a roll with rice cracker in it before. Both the cucumber and rice cracker added great crunch and texture to the soft fish! My friend who had been here before also ordered four TORO CHIVES CAVIAR (+$20 each) to share, as he said we had to try it at least once. I was so stuffed after finishing my own five piece temaki set, that I barely had room for this one. But it is the creme de la creme of the seafood temaki (unless you want Uni (sea urchin) which goes for market price) and so I had to eat it. The toro was super fatty and filling as toro should be. Was it worth $20? Probably not, but they use extremely high quality fish. A once in the lifetime splurge. I will note that the rolls are quite messy to eat and you definitely can't eat them in one bite. My rolls were falling apart as I tried to bite into them- you will need extra napkins for sure! Also, the rolls come in plastic which you pull off so that you can roll them at the table (they have directions have pictures at the table). Service is excellent. Our waitress was very kind and somehow remembered all our orders, even though each Temaki had such a long name. In terms of atmosphere, the interior is simplistic and modern Japanese. Everything is super clean. I would recommend making reservations ahead of time as they definitely have no shortage of customers eating here. TLDR: instagram worthy food. Mediocre-average low quality at this price point and fairly bad service. Simple-to-no decor ambiance inside. Clean Came here on a Sunday night with a reservation for 2. Arrived 6:30pm but got seated after 10minutes to wait for a spot to open up. After seated, took about 15-20minutes before a server came to take our order (the first time checking on us). After taking our order, we got our appetizer 10-15minutes later after. Another 10-15minutes later we got our temaki and chirashi bowl served. At this point, no server checked up on us (Didn't even serve us our water yet) The premium ($20 each piece) toro temaki and Uni Temaki are very disappointing. The toro doesn't quite melt and it's not sweet as you'd expect a toro to be. Uni kind of melts, but doesn't taste buttery rich. It's very tasteless. Santa Barbara uni tasted like heaven compared to this (allegedly theirs was flown in from Japan) Chirashi bowl seems to have some good pieces. I love ebi (sweet shrimp), but it's really not sweet. It seems that the bowl looks small but tall-ish and overflow, but if you actually look at the top behind the tamago, it has a circular wooden piece to prop it up. Even inside the bowl, there's a thicker similar looking circular wood plate inside. So, really, what you see if what you get. Inside is literally hollow with maybe 4 spoonful of rice only. Signature temaki tasted just ok. Too much strong marinade and sauce to cover up the seafood and you barely tasted anything. Usually if a restaurant or even market sells you strong marinated ingredients, they are usually lower-quality or not as fresh so they use condiments and marinades to cover it up. Oh.. the amount of plastic used in their temaki to wrap the seaweed is insane. Probably the only somewhat met expectation item was their takoyaki as it is nice and warm, well-seasoned and you can bite into pieces of squid.
