One of my favorite spots! Tamari Bar is a great place for almost all occasions! I have made a stop here for a casual night out, for a quick lunch, for special occasions like birthdays and Valentines, it has a great vibe for almost anything! It can get quite busy during dinner rush so a reservation is recommended, however there is a $25 deposit that is required but it does go towards your check. I have gotten daily specials here and restaurant staples as well. My absolute favorite thing to get here is the tamari roll which is dressed so perfectly! Their happy hour is also great and their pork bao buns are also AMAZING! Their bento sets are also a great choice and are huge. The price point is on the higher end but for the amount of food and variety, I would say it is quite reasonable, especially during happy hour. Tamari bar is such a cute spot to eat at on a night out. I personally like the vibe and decorations here more than its sister restaurant, Rondo. I happened to come on the last day of restaurant week, so I tried their special dinner box which looked pretty, but the taste failed in comparison. At both restaurants, I have not been impressed with their sashimi. It tastes a little fishy and honestly the rest of the box wasn't outstanding either. I did also get to try their hot stone wagyu which was good and a fair price. The service was attentive and the food came out relatively quickly. Overall, I would really recommend this place! I had a mixed good experience but the service was fantastic, the food came out very fast and played beautifully, and it was very fun and lively in there without being obnoxious. I loved the ahi tuna sashimi- perfect texture and delish accoutrements. It also was a really good portion for the price. As for the thing I didn't like: the cilantro udon was essentially inedible for me. The udon was what i would describe as chewy and slimy and there was a taste in the cilantro pesto that was quite foul to me. My partner also didn't like it. This is a great spot for those who like to try multiple items from a restaurant's menu! In particular, they have a wide variety of appetizers (almost like tapas) and even have an appetizer platter. It's also a great spot for unique and tasty alcoholic beverages! I made a reservation on Tock, which required a $10/per person deposit. This amount was instantly refunded when I checked in for my reservation. The unagi bowl was scrumptious. The rice was soft and cooked perfectly. The toppings complemented the bowl and added extra texture. It was a decent portion and didn't leave me feeling too heavy or stuffed! The servers were very attentive and checked in with us frequently. They did not rush us as we ordered another round of drinks and eventually dessert. Located in cap hill, this place can be busy, that or parking is going to be impossible to find so you might have to be prepared to wait a bit! The first time I came was on a Friday and it was about a ~20 minute wait for a group of 4 (which became like 7 but I'll touch on this later), and the second time was on a Thursday night, with no wait at all. I loved the Izakaya style of the restaurant, with the moody, dimly spaces and open patio for seating. It made the space very comfortable! In terms of food, it seems like they always have a rotating menu, which a few more consistent items. Of all the items I ordered my personal favorites were the area 206 curry and the wagyu yakiniku BBQ. The 206 curry, despite no meat in it, was delicious, flavorful, and held itself very well as an entree. The Yakiniku was so good that my friends and I ordered it twice! The beef was perfectly fatty, and paired with with the spicy mayonnaise that it came with. The drinks here were great as well, my friends and I each got our own highballs, my personal favorite was either the cola highball, or a classic yuzu highball. I can certainly see why this place is so popular, and will definitely come back for more late night bites! read more

i'm a huge fan of rondo, so it should come as no surprise that i love tamari bar, as well. i think the owner is a master of japanese food because tamari bar has never missed. the inside is laid out like a standard bar, but it is decorated like an izakaya. behind the bar, there is a large screen playing japanese movies every day. it can be anywhere from akira to ghibli to an obscure anime movie. all the waitstaff are super sweet and they have some really cool bartenders. usually, i go for the happy hours. from 4:30 PM-6:00 PM is the standard happy hour, and then late from 9:00 PM-close is their final happy hour. my only suggestion is that if you go to the closing happy hour, make sure you know what you're ordering quickly - during the weeknights, it's only a single hour! the cilantro udon is truly special & the happy hours are 1000% worth it. read more

A small side of soy sauce and wasabi was provided to pair with the sashimi. In addition, we ordered more karaage which came with their tartar sauce and the poutine. Everything came hot and fresh and beautifully presented! As a personally preference, I just didn't enjoy the flavors. I was in town and my friend suggested we visit this place for happy hour which I believe runs until 6pm. We ordered a ton of food to share and it was so much fun! It gets busier around dinner time which was when it started filling up. Things I tried: 1) octopus and seaweed appetizer. Octopus was raw and was very wasabi forward, will definitely open up the nasal cavities lol 2) if you order a high ball you can get a chicken karage side as as a set. Perfect if you want a small bite with a drink. 3) we got a set of different things to try which includes small slices of fish. Came here for their late night happy hour that starts at 9pm to close. We ordered: HI-TORI which is a TOKI HIGHBALL W/ 3PC CHICKEN KARA-AGE. This was a really good deal that comes with both a cocktail and an appetizers. BAO DOWN SAPPORO PINT W/ BAO OF YOUR CHOICE. We ordered it with the spider and it was quite tasty but heavy on the bao. TORA GOZEN which comes with CHEF CHOICE 7 KINDS APPETIZERS. Some highlights on here were the pork belly which was very tender and nice and fatty (I should've ordered this with my bao). Fried Brussel sprouts are very tasty and fried well. The sashimi (salmon, blue fin tuna, and albacore) were fresh and good quality. "OSAKA" CHEESE CHICKEN KATSU CURRY This is the AREA 206 CURRY chicken katsu with mozzarella cheese. I normally don't like getting the cheese with my katsu curry but the ratio was just right! I took a Friday night walk in Capitol Hill with my husband, my brothers, and their partners last month. We were all visiting from out of town, staying in Denny Triangle, and just wanted to explore and grab a drink in a different neighborhood. We walked up and down Pine and Pike, scoping out the bars as we went. Tamari Bar stood out for its easy, open patio, glowing with light from dozens of Japanese lanterns. We decided to walk in for a little nightcap. Tamari Bar is a casual izakaya, where you can get booze and Japanese bar food in a low-key, comfortable setting. The interior looked cute, but we opted to sit on the patio. We lucked into happy hour, which was running until closing at 11:00. Service was good and very friendly. The drinks weren't great, but the prices were reasonable and they passed the time. I got the Taking Flight, a milk punch cocktail with Nikka gin, Giffard Elderflower, Montenegro amaro, yuzu juice, and shiso. Sounded good, tasted cloying. My husband got the classic highball, which was fine, while one of my brothers got a Ramune highball with a Ramune bottle placed upside down in a large mug. This turned out to be a poorly designed highball, as Ramune does not drip past that little marble in the neck. There was a pretty robust food menu, much of it available at happy hour prices. We'd already eaten, but my other brother asked for a miso soup. Surprisingly, there was none on the menu, but he got the house equivalent, which our server disclaimed was not that similar to miso soup. I gather that Tamari Bar isn't going for traditional Japanese food, but you can get interesting items like spicy pork poutine and cilantro udon. We had fun at Tamari Bar and while I didn't love the drinks, I am glad we went. The patio was pleasant, definitely a nice spot to relax for a spell in Capitol Hill. read more

I can't believe it took me so long to come here! Tamari Bar is such a fantastic spot in all aspects - great food, amazing service, and good vibes. My friends and I came for happy hour on a Wednesday night and were able to get a table for an hour or so despite not having a reservation. Their happy hour menu is great with a bunch of options at a good price. We started with the tofu and popcorn chicken appetizers to share. They were so so good! The tofu was light and nicely flavored with bonito, and also had a good spicy sauce on top while the popcorn chicken was well fried and coated with a delicious sauce too. I also got the buta (pork belly) bao and the toro daikon handroll - both amazing! The bao was way bigger than I expected and it had the perfect soft fluffy bao with the giant sweet savory piece of pork belly. I'd so get it again. The hand roll was also so fresh and delicious! My friend got the ocean salad which was gigantic for the price and had tons of sashimi - it looked amazing. I've tried many many things on the menu, but my current faves are the Tora set, which samples a couple of the appetizers and some nice pieces of sashimi, the Sashimi salad, the Soft Shell Crab Bao, and the Dark Typhoon cocktail! They have great happy hour promotions so I always end up coming at that time. The interior is super cute and there are always people when I go. I would suggest making a reservation if you plan to come between 6-9pm. Their sister restaurant Rondo is amazing as well, just up on the north end of Broadway. Definitely a Seattle institution. My partner and I both died a little when we had to stop eating because we were too full (they ordered something else but if I'm being honest I don't remember what it was because I was so locked in on this bibimbap). Portion was generous too! They also ate some of it and we still had leftovers. Partner reports leftovers were also delicious. 10/10 will absolutely be back.
