My rating for this place is 3.5. The place has 2 floors - "regular" one, and roof top. The regular one has very high ceiling, I really liked it and felt like it gives the place cool vibe. There's nice space between tables, and there's also a small bar. The rooftop is a standard rooftop, with view to 18th st. Very nice. They have very nice selection of draft beers, but the happy hour includes only 3 of them. Also - they had very limited selection of dishes on the happy hour menu, and the 2 dishes I tried were not good (flat bread pizza and onion deep with cheese - the right photo). Later we took another dish from the regular menu - chicken sausage (left photo). It was OK, not more than that. Bottom line - it's a nice place to have a drink, but they should work on their food manu ASAP. read more

I originally came to Roofers Union because I have roofed a few houses and was interested in joining a trade union. Little did I know that this establishment had nothing to do with roofing; it just had a roof. Never one to pass up a rooftop bar, I proceeded to pay $13.20 for a draft of a smoked citrus gose. The gose was meh and the roof was loud, but that should be expected when people are drinking heavily. I would've given five stars if not for the fact that the name was misleading. read more

The chips were not crispy (maybe humidity had something to do with it), the French onion dip had zero flavor Brisket was pretty good but the other items were not. Atmosphere: i cant put my finger on what theme roofers union is going for. It has a convenient location in adams morgan with a huge window overlooking the street. There's an active bar scene with stand around tables and then a sit down area for dinner. The decor is stuff you would find on an old roof (?) Like a windmill type thing and such. All in all i think it would be a fun place for friends to grab a drink or a very casual date. Service: nothing to complain about for the service. Also all the waitresses (there were no waiters when i went) were really pretty. Food: i got the sausages because that seemed to be what was special on the menu. I also started with the spinach dip because i was starving. I think i liked the spinach dip better than the sausage even. Food was ok nothing that blew my mind. Price: price isn't bad in general but it really depends on what you get. My friend got the sausage platter and it was not worth it for $25. Nice covered rooftop space with hipster vibe. Very limited seating so must make reservation. Tables are comfortably spaced apart and sanitized between guests. They offer Craft beers with sandwich fare. Had a chicken sausage in a pretzel bun. Paired nicely with a draft quad ipa. My friends also raved over brisket sandwich. As it warms up it was nice to see they have a refreshing Radler on their beer can menu. read more

Been here for brunch a number of times. Their hot mess is absolutely amazing. Fried chicken with sausage gravy and a fried egg. I get the honey siracha they make the chicken Sammy with (also a solid dish) to spice it up. Its like a heart attack on a plate but in a good way, haha. read more

ROOFER'S UNION HAS ROACHES. I've been here two times for dinner, and I do not like this place. The first time I went with a large group. The sever was nice, but he completely messed up my order. He attempted to fix my order, which only consisted of a dessert and cocktail, but there wasn't much he could do to fix the problem. I gave him the benefit of doubt, because I was in a large crowd. The second time I went by myself. I ordered an old fashioned, wings, brussel sprouts, and fingerling potatoes. The order was accurate, hot, and delicious. I finished half of my food and decided to take the rest home for leftovers. After paying my bill, a roach crawled across my table, and I instantly felt sick. If roaches are crawling on the customer tables, you know there is a bad infestation problem. I killed the roach and showed it to the hostess who said she would talk to management. I did not take my leftovers home. I was sick the next day. During both visits, the establishment has been pretty empty. Between the low traffic, inaccurate orders, and uncleanliness, I hope they are closed soon. read more

Trivia night here was just okay. The appetizers were very different portions sizes but were the best part of the night. The onion dip is delicious and our server offered more chips. The pork tots were strange and under seasoned, they came in a very small portion. For entrees most of the table ordered sausages which were good. The chicken flatbread was swimming in sauce and grease and the mushroom pasta was too small a portion for the price. The speaker system in the restaurant isn't great so it was hard to hear the trivia announcer. Also the whole place was a bit drafty. I made it to Roofers Union recently with a bunch of girlfriends for my bachelorette dinner. They were able to accommodate our large size with reservations we made at 7pm a few days earlier. We were running late that day and called to see if we could push it back, but they could only do 7:15PM (odd because when we got there, there were only 3 tables worth of people and everything else was open). Nonetheless, we sat down and ordered a round of drinks. I had a gin gimlet that was rather sour and unfortunately lost some of it to the table as its legs were unseasonably wobbly. The menu looked very good and I ended up with some mac n cheese (my favorite) and fried green tomatoes. I decided to make my meal out of these two things. As a self-proclaimed MnC connoisseur, I have to say I was unimpressed. It was very bland, quite small, and not memorable. The tomatoes were very good tho! Props for the wide open space, big windows, and great people watching! However, I had to remove stars for the server - she seemed generally annoyed that she had to serve us and got a few of the orders wrong. I came here for Sunday brunch with a group of girl friends while visiting D.C. We made a reservation ahead of time (I think you might need to for brunch) and we were seated promptly. The service was great overall! The waitresses and servers were attentive and polite. My group did the bottomless mimosa brunch and they certainly gave us our money's worth! They were refilling my mimosa glass before I even finished with the one I was on. The food was better than good but not fantastic. A friend and I split the waffle and burger and both were, like I said, good. (3.5 stars) Despite the rooftop not being open for Sunday brunch in June (it didn't open till 4pm), brunch here was solid, especially the hamburger which was shockingly really good. The second floor, though by no means the same as the rooftop, was still a nice setting because it gets a lot of natural light. Aside from the food, mimosas are $5 (bottomless is $15) but the service can be slow so you'll likely get one or two less than you think. If you're a burger person, definitely order the one here and with it, ask for some bbq sauce. My burger came a little bit more cooked than I would have expected (closer to well-done than medium) but it worked really well, especially with the bacon because they each had a rich crispy texture. (That unique texture may actually arise because the meat is a mix of beef sirloin and brisket.) The cheese was a sharp but not too sharp cheddar and the chipotle aioli I actually didn't detect very much. Really the sauce you should use for the burger and as a dip for the french fries, even though they aren't that great, is the bbq sauce. Its mostly sweet but with a hint of smokiness and is almost like a rich marinara sauce but more light and complex. Would totally come here and order the hamburger again. Its filling and really isn't too expensive at $15, at least relative to the rest of the menu. read more

I enjoyed a casual brunch with friends here while visiting DC. The menu was enticing, and I loved how much you could customize the waffles. Even though I ordered AND ate more than I should have, I was happy to have the option of a nice sized side salad to at least feel like I was eating a little healthy food! The greens were fresh, and the dressing was tasty and original without being too strong. I ordered the chicken and waffles and the chicken (see photo!) was a lot larger of a piece than I imagined so it turned out that I didn't really need the extra egg on the side. My husband ate the hot mess, which was truly tasty and had a little bit of everything! I do understand the the culture of DC is changing, but it's very unfortunate that I could not bring my kids to a rooftop restaurant in the middle of the day. This was my old neighborhood. I simply wanted them to enjoy it just as I did at the Marie Reed Center as I told them about the history of the neighborhood. Honestly, I could respect that people have drinking & smoking privileges. I love to have a drink, but allow families to make a choice to have teenagers see a view of the city we grew up in. Too pricey anyway. I love the new renovations. The Reef was getting old and tired. The interior looks very professionally done, and the windows on the 2nd floor are to die for. Brussel sprouts were great, cippolini onion rings were pretty good, my friend raved about the BLT w/ a fried egg. So this review is only based on the 30 minutes I was there before they closed..... It was a Tuesday night, but I was bummed because we had just arrived and walked up the stairs to enjoy the view. Anyway, staff was friendly and the service was fast. The drinks were strong and the view is beautiful. We got a table near the corner, so it was fun just to enjoy a drink and people watch as the evening crowd got warmed up. Would definitely come back to check out this spot again. The service was good an there are TVs available to view sporting events. I only had drinks so the food quality is a mystery to me but I did peek into the restaurant area and it was open and airy. A group of friends and I came here for late night drinks on a Monday night. The view is lovely both from the inside level of the restaurant (large windows line one wall looking out on the Adams Morgan streets) and from the rooftop bar. The place was mostly empty, except for 5 or 6 people at the bar. The male bartender behaved as though we were disrupting him or the service, even though they weren't close to closing. This resulted in him spending long amounts of time ignoring my male companions when they went to order. He was much friendlier to me, which I suspect was so because I'm female. I took stars off mainly because of his inattentiveness to our group given that it was slow and he was not slammed. The drinks were reasonably priced and we had some very nice cocktails. I love the cherries that came with the Manhattans. They were candied cherries, but not your typical maraschino- delicious. I would absolutely come again and I hope that we'd get friendlier service. read more

Great happy hour, fantastic location on the main street in Adams Morgan (a few doors down from Julia's Empanadas), friendly staff/bartenders, and not too crowded on a weeknight. The upstairs has a fantastic view, but I don't believe it is wheelchair accessible because I didn't see an elevator and the stairs are rather steep... Upstairs also doesn't have the same drink deals as downstairs (not sure if the lower level is accessible or not). Beer & Wine Tons of local offerings on top, which I really appreciate, plus they had a few cider options (can't recall if they were local or just the basic Angry Orchard). Thursdays mean half off bottles of wine upstairs, which means fairly affordable drinking. Food Homemade chips with French onion dipping sauce or divine. Tip, when you run out of chips you can order more for a discount without ordering more onion dip as well (they give you PLENTY of dip)! We ordered some crispy Brussels sprouts and beer steam PEI mussels. They were so good!! It was a big portion to share. To say we are disappointed would be an understatement. My fellow teammates and I dined here after extensive research and great reviews. We were pleased with the looks and had high expectations that were soon to be squashed. After ordering my burger, medium well, it was served to me pink. I am not usually picky, but that did not look appetizing. My teammate ordered a bacon burger and received a burnt black bean quinoa burger?! The lemonade was gross. My other teammate also received an undercooked burger. To conclude, it was overrated for the prices, and I would not dine here again. read more

Not only does it afford us the opportunity to meet people from all walks of life, but they do it the way that we love the best... with food and drink and a fabulous venue!! I brought one of my BFFs( who is now ready to start Yelping) and we arrived promptly at 6 pm. We checked in with Kimberly and Gloria(of which the amazingness of both I don't think I need to emphasize to this group of cool kids) and were excited to donate to our charity and then find a seat to delve into the goodies!! When it came to the starters, my oh my. My eyes are rolling into the back of my head to talk about the starters we had: bacon cheeseburger sliders, sriracha chicken sliders, chicken kabobs, spinach artichoke with a kick dip, chips, and the ginger whiskey drink. Wahooooo at the deliciousness!! Now, I REALLY wanted to get back in there immediately as my plate finished, but being a good Elite member, I tempered myself to allow everyone to have the opportunity to nosh. But then it got better. The AMAZING servers began walking around with more foodstuffs to sample and this brought about the advent of the pork skewers which I didn't quite love as the flavor was amazing, but they were a bit dry. They refilled the Italian sausage on a pretzel bun and although my bestie actually loved that snackie the most, I found the sausage a little too spongey for my taste or enjoyment. Oh yes, one thing at this event (food wise) made me so sad... there was only one plate of ribs brought out and as the saying goes, the early Yelper gets the rib. I wasn't paying attention at all, so of COURSE I lost out on the ribs, but hope to get there to try them because they looked amazing. The make your own spices is the best idea ever; please believe I will be using it at my wedding!! :) Only thing I would change are the "roofers uniforms" that act as decor. The amount of creativity shown in the food last night is belied by those uniforms hanging on the rack. I don't have a solution, but I know you can pull something more awesome out. I recently went to Roofer's Union for a colleague's going-away party. We arrived early (around 5:45), and the place was pretty empty. We joined our friends, who were eating meals in the corner of the dining area. My girlfriend and I asked the waiter about the happy hour drinks, and we were told that happy hour drinks are only sold at the bar. That's pretty normal, so we headed up to order drinks. The bartender was curt and unfriendly, informing us that, because we were part of a party that was 'taking up space' in the seating area, we could not order happy hour drinks. We told the bartender that our group would soon be moving to the bar area, but she was unyielding. The bartender's demeanor was unfriendly and the rigidity of the policy seemed unnecessary, given that we were the only group at the bar at the time. We decided that we'd rather just buy full-priced drinks than deal with her, so we cut our losses and headed back to our party. Unfortunately, despite repeatedly asking for table service (twice to waiters and once to the hostess), we ended up sitting for 25 minutes with no drinks. Once we did get service, I was relatively pleased with our waiter. He was friendly and seemed like he genuinely wanted to help. By that time, though, the mood was pretty sour. The burgers were quite good, though they're overpriced by a few bucks. The fries were excellent. It could just be that the Roofer's Union had an off-day, but I found myself feeling frustrated and unhappy with the experience. Nice meal today; it was my first time coming during the daytime and I am most familiar with the establishment for its nightlife. The large bay windows provided a nice atmosphere in the dining room. I was excited to see that nutritional yeast was an ingredient in the vegetarian fry (potatoes, tofu, kale, and mushrooms). The food was amazing! We had the roasted Brussels sprouts for an appetizer. They were cooked and seasoned perfectly. I had the fried chicken thigh sandwich for my meal. It was the best chicken sandwich I've ever had. The Siracha honey glaze was truly fantastic. The service was also great. Due to covid all food is served in to go containers for dine in service, but it didn't take away from the experience and the amazing taste of the food more than made up for it. I walked in the room and felt like I didn't belong, but I went ahead and stayed because I spotted this place from the street and thought I'd give it a try. There only seems to be one waitress working the entire restaurant. It took her 15 minutes or so to even take my drink order. My food came out timely... the cauliflower was ok, but I really needed some salt. There isn't any on the table and the waitress never came back so I had to suffer through it. I finally got my steak and fritz which I asked to be cooked medium. It came out 30 minutes later well done, with no steak knife to try to cut into it with. The waitress took another 20 minutes to see how I was doing when I let her know my steak was over cooked. She sent it back and I had a new one in a pretty timely manner, but still no steak knife.
