Looking for a pleasant fine dining experience? Don't come here... I walked in the room and felt like I didn't belong, but I went ahead and stayed because I spotted this place from the street and thought I'd give it a try. There only seems to be one waitress working the entire restaurant. It took her 15 minutes or so to even take my drink order. My food came out timely... the cauliflower was ok, but I really needed some salt. There isn't any on the table and the waitress never came back so I had to suffer through it. I finally got my steak and fritz which I asked to be cooked medium. It came out 30 minutes later well done, with no steak knife to try to cut into it with. The waitress took another 20 minutes to see how I was doing when I let her know my steak was over cooked. She sent it back and I had a new one in a pretty timely manner, but still no steak knife. This place is awesome! We came here for the first time last night on a TravelZoo deal. SO worth it. They give large portions, we each got the trout.... it was great!! Also highly recommend the Brussels sprouts. They have a Dump Trump drink that is strong and good. (unlike our president) Service is great, they have the most friendly people working there! It isn't often you get a live viewing of the hit pixar film ratatouille while dining out! About mid way through our meal we saw multiple mice running around the rooftop living their best life and enjoying the view (more so than my party!). I know the area is packed with restaurants and these types of pests can be hard to manage but on a ROOF?! cmon... even beyond this though, the dining experience was not great. All of the food and drink was served on paper plates and plastic cups making it feel more like a local barbecue than an established bar/restaurant. the food was fine, overpriced of course. The only thing that got me through this dining experience was the STRONG maitai roa drink that was essentially straight tequila. I will not be returning. read more

What an unexpected and pleasant surprise! Excellent food, robust beer list, and friendly, attentive service at a reasonable price. Adams Morgan is generally not a food destination for me (falafel and empanadas aside) but Roofer's Union has changed my tune. The beers seem to rotate with some frequency, so I hesitate to make specific recommendations. That said, our waiter was super nice about bringing over tastes to help us decide which beers to order. Everything that I sampled was terrific, so don't be shy about asking for suggestions. We split an order of the fried brussels sprouts to start. These crispy, savory little bites were so filling that one plate was just the right amount for three diners. For an entree, I tried the flatbread, topped with more brussels sprouts (big fan of the cruciferous veggies...), butternut squash, caramelized onions and a cheesy garlic sauce. It was delicious and the portion was so big that I could only eat half. Who doesn't love two dinners for the price of one? My husband was unusually effusive about the fried chicken thigh sandwich. He was wowed by every single component - the tender, well-seasoned meat, the light, crunchy texture of the breading, and now has plans to recreate the incredible honey sriracha sauce at home. The fries had that perfect combination of crisp exterior, fluffy interior & great flavor. I confess to stealing quite a few off his plate.... Our friend had the mushroom and heirloom grain risotto. She's usually a member of the clean plate club and actually had leftovers, so the portion is generous. This risotto was unlike any I've tried before. It was very creamy, but the grains maintained a distinct texture, especially the wild rice, giving this a heartier quality than most risotto dishes. The mushroom flavor was super pronounced and the soft poached egg stirred in beautifully, adding even more richness. We were all pretty full, but had just enough room to split a scoop of ice cream three ways. The salted caramel flavor is amazing, with deep browned butter notes and a good hit of salt. I asked where they buy their ice cream, only to learn that they make it in house. Next time, I'll be sure to save more room for dessert! read more

Mediocre brunch with not a lot of options. Seems to be a younger/ college crowd that hangs here. They do have a nice rooftop overlooking 18th street, and some tasty punch for sharing that's served in a large bowl with a ladle (this reminded me of college days and I appreciated it) Good Moscow mules as well. read more

Uhhhh.. there was very little to like about this place. First, the dinning room is too loud, too bright and the tables oversized (which contributes to one having to shout at their diner mates). Second, the food, as my friend put it, "looks like and smells like Ben's Chili Bowl". She was not dissing that place. But rather expressing our collective disappointment to choices better left to a hotdog stand. Third, the desserts .. odd choices for the in-house pastry chef -- Boston creme pie, a sundae, sorbet, cookies with milk ... really? Meh is all I have to say. Parts were good, parts were very bad which I think equates to a "meh." I wanted this place to be so good too! Prime roof deck and interesting design, which sadly don't make up for the mediocre food or horrible service. To start, the service was horrible! We had to ask for silverware twice and it took way too long to come out. Our food arrived before the silverware did. And our waitress was nowhere to be found after she took our order. No joke. We saw her twice: once to take our order and once to give us the check. Never mind that I never got a refill on my water. I even had to get up to ask for a spoon. I'm not asking to be treated like a prince, but I also am paying for a meal at a restaurant. And the food. I had the sriracha honey chicken sandwich. It was actually pretty good. So good, that I am slowly attempting to make my own healthier version at home! But that is about it. My friend and I ordered salads with our meals, but they didn't tell us there was an extra charge for it. They also didn't tell us they would be absolutely horrible. It was a concoction of what seemed like leftover vegetables with oil. No flavor, nothing. Odd, and not very enjoyable. I may give them another shot, I want to really like this place. I have to say finding a reservation on a Saturday night is tough in DC, but I was surprise to have find tables here available. I had been here for happy hour and the food was pretty good, so I thought it would be great for dinner as well. I love walking into the high ceilings and being upstairs looking down on adam's morgan's main street. The waitress and hostess were so great as out numbers kept going up and down and they moved us even though we were being a little difficult. They never made us feel like we were being annoying, even though we were those people. My friends 4 friends and I got the first three to share and it was a lot of food. So much that I barely finished my fried chicken thigh sandwich. Spinach Dip/Pretzel Chips $10 - the dip was good, but the pretzel chips were so amazing. These should be an app by itself. Macaroni & Cheese/ Cheddar/ Gruyère $9 - This is by far likely the best Mac and Cheese in DC. I said it! The best. The gruyere just gave it the extra flavor that put it over the top than others. I have to say that right proper is a close second. Chicken Wings/Sriracha Honey Glaze $10 - it was a great mix between sweet and spicy. It was so good, and during happy hour, it is only $5 Fried Chicken Thigh Sandwich: Honey Sriracha, Lettuce, Mayonaise, Ciabatta $13 I look forward to coming back here and eating more mac and cheese and chicken wings. i also think the prices are not too bad compared to other subpar food in DC. read more

This review is specifically for the brunch. We came for brunch on a Sunday morning and had such a great experience. We made a reservation for noon and were immediately seated. It's such a great brunch vibe here, they have tons of tv's with games on, and the space is big enough that it didn't feel overly crowded despite all the tables being filled. First off, the bottomless mimosa deal is 100% the way to go! Its $15 and they never let your drink get more than half way down before refilling- much better than other places in the area that are stingy with bottomless. The food is also amazing! We were having such a hard time deciding what to get because everything we saw coming out of the kitchen looked unbelievably good. Our group ended up getting the fried chicken sandwich, BLT, and the eggs benedict. Seriously good fried chicken, and the honey sriracha sauce was so good on the sandwich. I also loved that they didn't try to push you out right at the 2 hour mark like other places do. Highly recommend brunch here for a group! read more

First of all, I am THRILLED that Roofer's Union took over this great space from Reef, which was awful. Downstairs, there's a small lounge area with limited food options. The main room is great - well decorated with those GIANT windows to 18th street (and I am eagerly awaiting the roof's opening, which should be awesome). The menu is divided into apps/small plates, sandwiches, sausages, and a few larger entrees. I ordered the chicken wings appetizer (delicious, the sriracha-honey sauce was unique and a great combo) and the fried chicken sandwich (a similar taste actually, very good). Based on the reviews of friends, the sausages would be a good order as well - pretty substantial, and with toppings underneath the meat (which kept things from falling out, which happens every time I'm at a Nat's game. I never learn). I'd avoid the "dirty water dog" - it's supposed to be modeled after the NYC hot dog carts...but...I took a bite and I'd take a NYC hot dog over this one. Overall, prices were about what you'd expect, maybe a dollar or 2 overpriced for what you're getting. There's also a large and reasonably priced beer list. I'd note that the small plates that came out ALL looked delicious. Definitely seems like the kind of place I would come and order some appetizers and a couple drinks. (Especially if they have a HH soon? Hopefully...) Atmosphere is nice, but getting stuck at the "counter" table was unfortunate. The stools are the uncomfortable kind where there's nowhere to put your feet, and another party came and someone sat directly across from me, which was kinda awkward (she didn't have to). I went to the roof bar right after it opened for the season and had a thoroughly meh experience. They had a decent wine list, but the food list is way smaller than the main menu downstairs. Ordinarily, I'd say that's to be expected, but since most of their food is re-imagined bar food, I expected more to be available. I had the french onion dip, which was standard, the artichoke dip, which was better, and the chicken liver skewer, which was hands down the worst thing I've eaten in a restaurant in as long as I can remember. Liver can be delicious. But more needs to be done with it than just throwing it on the grill. I'd give Roofers Union another try, but only to try the inside dining experience and check out the full menu. Great view, unimpressive food (for the prices). Service was just fine, beer list is good. Menu has only a few options for vegetarians and these are predictable and dull. We shared a carafe of the punch and it was ok for the first two sips--then we realized it was cloyingly sweet. The kind of think you'd enjoy drinking when you first turn 21. Doesn't pair well at all with the food. Was a chore to finish. Merguez - Sausage that was supposed to come with harissa but it was left off. Not super impressive. Also it was coiled into a circle kind of like a... poo. Gross. Chicken wings with siracha honey sauce - These were ok but nothing special. Black bean quinoa burger - You can make a more flavorful version of this with the contents of your pantry right now. Boring. Cauliflower "snack" - Roasted cauliflower served cold. Was really thinking this would be a warm appetizer and the menu didn't indicate either way. Served cold, it was unappealing and ikcy. We left wishing we could re-do dinner somewhere else. Hey, I'm 27 and find almost any excuse after a rough night to go out and find the hangover cure called brunch. Like many DC residents, I find it tough to find a place that doesn't require my lazy friends to wake up at the crack of dawn or isn't booked weeks in advance... First off, Roofer's Union is no longer as much of an eye sore as the previous surfer themed deal, whatever it was called before, and the atmosphere was great. The second floor has large warehouse windows that let in tons of natural light, you've got $15 bottomless mimosas, and the pandora station they had playing that Sunday was super laid back. The menu is simple but substantial, with the Hot Mess being a personal favorite because it reminds me of a greasier Corn Beef n/ Hash (sausage/ peppers & onions/ fried chicken/ sunny egg/ gravy...come on now). I'm not a dessert guy, but the strawberries and cream waffle dessert was perfect...warm waffles (careful the metal dish it's served in comes out hot briefly) topped with cold blended strawberries and topped with whipped cream. The rooftop also is great, but they don't serve the $15 mimosas there because they said people stay all day. It's right off 18th street directly across from Tryst and the The Diner so you can stare at the people waiting for hours in line, there's a bar, and in the sun/shaded seating for about 40 people. Location: 4 Solid location in the heart of Adams Morgan with a ton of bars, restaurants, and great nightlife. However, it's not easily accessible by the Metro, which can be a bit difficult. But then again, there's always Uber. Bar itself: 3 There's a cute little bar downstairs with maybe 5 or 6 tables that seat about 2-4 people. Upstairs is the rooftop bar with a live band, plenty of tables, and a view that looks down onto all the crazies below. It's great for large groups and I also liked the fact that you can actually carry a decent conversation without having to shout to each other. However, they don't serve Guinness. ::PEEVED:: But they do have a great selection of belgians and IPAs. Service : 3 Not that friendly. Took a while to get their attention even when there was maybe 10 people at the bar downstairs. Can only get beer upstairs? Ambience: 4 Fun, upbeat, and lively. Maybe it's because I'm still a little new to the area and not really sure of where to go, but there appeared to be a lot of college kids/younger crowd. I went here for brunch on a Sunday. I am a bloody mary fan and I don't like mimosas. Unfortunately, Roofers Union only offers bottomless mimosas for brunch. However, what they lack in bottomless bloody marys, they make up in beer selection. A lot of places that boast a large number of beers on tap usually have a bunch of the same stuff. The reason I say that is because, while I was waiting for a drink at the bar, I caught a glimpse (and a whiff) of the Mac and cheese this girl was eating and not only did it smell amazing but looked quite delectable, to the point I was seriously stopping myself from asking a stranger for a bite of her food. Anyways, on the night of my visit only the roof was open as the other floors were closed for a private event. It was quite unseasonably warm (although wearing shorts and skimpy tank tops was still not in the realm of possibility said everyone with at least partial dignity but I digress) so the roof was A-Ok for me. We scored one of the last available tables and were privy to quite a view from the roof. I love people watching , and Roofers Union is definitely a top-notch place to take it all in. The bartender available for our first two rounds was great! She let me sample a couple beers before committing and I always appreciate that. I decided on an Avery IPA for round #1 and a Double IPA (out of Cali but name escapes me ATM) for round #2. My drinking buddy had a vodka club soda X 2 and said it was solidly made. For what was to be round #3, a new bartender was there and she spent far too much time flirting with unattractive guys at the other end of the bar. I stood there for several minutes and when she showed no signs of letting up, I suggested my drinking buddy and I go elsewhere for that last drink. Despite that, I love a bar that just outrightly states "no Miller lite, bud light, coors light (or any other "waste of caloric intake" beer) served here so I will definitely hit up Roofers Union again, hopefully coupled with that amazing Mac and cheese I spied earlier in the night. read more

What a cool space! If I had a restaurant, I would want it to look exactly like this. Those gigantic windows, the slightly mismatched chairs, the soon-to-be-awesome roof. The whole experience of being there felt cool. My boyfriend and I started with cocktails--he with the Old Fashioned and I with the one that has bourbon and raspberry in it. Both were tasty and well-sized. I wasn't really in the mood for a beer right then, but the list is long with the majority of options on tap. We decided to start with a "snack" of Artichoke dip. It was a winner. Creamy and artichoke-y and cheesy, but more gourmet tasting than the run-of-the-mill recipe. Also, we ran out of chips and they gave us more for no charge. I love when they do that! I mean, they should provide more chips, but I would have been bummed if we had had to forfeit some dip, or, gasp, eat it plain. Next, we both got the fried chicken sandwich. Not great for a review, I realize, but that's what we each wanted. I was lobbying for splitting that and a sausage, but that idea was vetoed. The sandwich has sriracha honey on it which is the primary flavor. Great, but also spicier than I anticipated. The fries were disappointing and need to be better at a place like this. Especially when the neighboring table ordered steak frites and I stole a peek at frites. They were like the overachieving brother to what was on my plate. Service generally was friendly but somewhat absent. It took a while for the waitress to come over, but she did take the time to chat and give recommendations. Shout out to the water guy for being present and getting us those extra chips! To conclude, we got the pretzel sundae. This was almost a home run. It's vanilla ice cream with fudge and these crunchy caramelized pretzel bits. Main problems are that it is served in a traditional sundae glass (like a tall milkshake glass) which makes it very difficult to 1) share; 2) get to the bottom; and 3) look graceful when your elbow is in the air like that. In addition, the fudge was put in first, so it clung to the sides and got cold and kind of hard. Most of my bites were fudge-less until the last one which was all fudge. Those crunchy pretzel bits were on point though. So, yeah, not everything was perfect. But like I said, this place is so cool, and there is nothing else like it in Adams Morgan. Once it gets warmer outside, Roofers Union will be even better, and I can't wait to go back. read more

This place is way better than Reef! The bar is more upscale, the cocktails are excellent, and they have live music on the second level. The rooftop is still an incredible experience as it always was. Roofers Union is surely a contender for one of the best bars in Adams Morgan! When you come here, drink the Don Burgundy. I don't usually like scotch based drinks but this one does the trick. I've been here one other time and the only reason this review is not a 1 star is because I thought that the first experience was pretty positive minus some dirty utensils and cups. This time the service was extra poor. We went for brunch and the reservation was at 1:30 and even the first people who arrived were not seated until 1:40. When asked how long we would have bottomless the waitress said that 2:30 was the cutoff - she would aim to pour us 3 drinks over the timespan but most times she would cut people off at 2 because she wouldn't have enough time to pour the drinks. We went through our drinks at 2:30 and did not receive our food until about 30 minutes later. One of the people at my house table had a plate of food that was completely cold. She asked if they could microwave it but there was no microwave so they told her to order a completely new meal. When it came to getting us our checks we probably waited about an hour for checks. So to put that in prospective we were cut off from bottomless drinks at 2:30, received our drinks at 3 or later and then did not get our checks until after 4. This was probably the second worst service I've had in DC. read more

I thought this place was really fun! The space is 3 floors. Very cool and trendy. Good music too. The rooftop is awesome and when it's not so chilly, that's where id like to be! Right in the heart of Adams Morgan. It's definitely a good place for drinks but also enjoyed a lovely meal tonight with a friend. I actually had the chicken sausage on a pretzel roll. It was SO yummy. My friend had the risotta. It was huge so she saved probably more than half for tomorrow. The Brussel sprouts we're also just lovely! Stopped in for drinks while hanging out with dad on Father's Day. We headed up to the rooftop and took in the amazing views. You can see all the way to Virginia. And the rooftops of Adam's Morgan are amazing. Drinks were good. We tried one of the punch bowls - delicious. Nice friendly crowd. UPDATE 4/16/2015 --- I returned to give this restaurant another shot. While the drinks outshine the food (the drinks alone may bring me back), the noise level had improved markedly (essentially a 180 from our last experience!) and our server was attentive. ORIGINAL POST --- Superlatives are not usually my thing, but Roofer's Union was without question one of -- if not the worst -- dining experiences I've had since I moved to DC. I came with a party of 5 or 6 people whom I had not seen in awhile and was looking forward to catching up with but the noise level was deafening, virtually sound barrier-defying, and what was supposed to be an enjoyable, COLLECTIVE dining experience inevitably Balkanized into 4 discussions at once, simply because the person next to us was the only conversation partner any of us could reasonably have. This was supremely disappointing. What's more, our server was terse, inattentive, and charged us for items that we asked for but never received. While the food that DID manage to show up was decent, a member of our party complained of cold French fries and none of us were particularly blown away by our dishes. I live in the area and was really hoping to find a convenient haunt for dinners and happy hours with friends, but after this experience I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that the search is still on. First off, it looks better from the photos on their website than in person, in which it just feels faux in trying to create the repurposed look, whose rage hopefully will be coming to an end soon. The food, I suppose then was fitting. The limited menu was quite pricey for the quantity and quality. And, $6 for a 7oz beer - really! Ugh. I even waited to try Roofer's Union a second time before giving it a bad review. I had been to Ripple and loved it so was excited for the new restaurant in an awesome space! My advice: stick with the drinks (good beer list and fun cocktails) and the small plates/appetizers. Both times those were the highlights. The main dishes were all pretty terrible. The bratwurst tasted like no bratwurst I've ever had before. No one in my party liked their dish except for the mussels. It's too expensive for bad food. The space inside is awesome, and the roof is cool though I think they need to clear out some of the low tables to make more room and compete with the other bars in AdMo. I'm bummed this wasn't the great non-fratty addition to AdMo I was hoping for! read more

Roofers Union is my new favorite place in Adams Morgan. Their rooftop space is great for brunch or a late night bite. All of their food is so delicious. And they have fun punch bowl cocktails to share with friends. For brunch, I love the hot mess -- their fried chicken is incredible. Both moist and perfectly crispy. They also make a mean waffle with delicious maple syrup. Dinner on the roof is beautiful. It is crowded but still feels very intimate. It's the perfect combination of people watching and lowlight dining. I like to start with the French onion dip with amazing made in house potato chips. The experience here was such a hit! Went on a Saturday night with a reservation. Great energy in the room, nice open space. The whole experience was wonderful. Service was excellent--the manager, Dave, is great! He chatted with us quite a bit and both he and our lovely server were eager to get us samples of drinks they thought we might like (and they have quite a beer, wine, and cocktail menu). They really want everyone to be having a good time. We had the chicharones and the cornmeal crusted oysters to start (these were a special). Both were perfectly executed with amazing sauces on the side. We then had the mushroom risotto and the duck confit pot pie. Both were delicious--we agreed the risotto was the star though. Creamy, explosive flavor in the mushrooms, unique texture of the heirloom grains. WOW! I'm going to be addictively returning to get my risotto fix now ha! The pot pie had great flavor too. For dessert, we had pumpkin cheesecake with salted caramel ice cream. The pumpkin flavor was excellent as was the ice cream. I would recommend to the kitchen that they consider a thinner ginger snap cookie as the base as it was very hard to break with a spoon--maybe a more wafer like cookie? But the presentation was gorgeous and the flavors were spot on. All the food looked as good as it tasted. We also had many different kinds of drinks and enjoyed them all. Great selection! And they happily let us sample things when we weren't sure. We both really enjoyed a cocktail that isn't on their website so I can't recall its name but it had lavender, lime, rye, and cider--so good! Used to love this place but had really bad customer service tonight. Bartender seemed to be really cranky in the hospitality industry. Seriously needs to reevaluate his profession. 1) Stood at hostess podium for 10mins no acknowledgement ( trying this patience thing) 2) Went to bar and told bartender I'm not interested in waiting another 10 mins to be seated then bartender seats us 3) Server is clueless 4) Bartender saves the day again 5) Food was tasty but not enough to come back 6) Overall management is needed, female bartender is an asset, food ok but you will not slap any relatives. Great rooftop hangout in Adams Morgan. Big fan of rooftop bars in general and this didn't disappoint. Small so seating was hard to come by but good time regardless! read more

Came here for a chill Friday night with friends. We made our way to the roof and enjoyed the view, the fair priced drinks, and the atmosphere - way less bumpin' than your typical AdMo spot, which was a great change in pace. The music was a bit strange though, as it ranged from chill beats to depressing Blink 182/Matchbox to upbeat 90s throwbacks. Whacky music aside, the drinks were pretty tasty. My girlfriend and I split two of the specials that were served in carafes - one was a citrusy champagne mix, and the other was just as good (but I cannot recall what it was because it was quite potent). If you're looking to actually talk to your friends and hang out, Roofer's Union seems like a decent place to do so. The roof is covered, and has a lot of tablespace available. The crowd is young and friendly. The are definitely still working out some of the kinks (music, bartenders) but I would happily return. read more

We had our wedding at Roofers Union. We rented out the second floor and rooftop, and EVERYONE loved it. This was due in large part to the amazingly wonderful team (led by their events person, Julia), and the crazy delicious food. I have to admit that I was mostly wary of the food, despite having been to Roofers Union for a number of meals. I wondered whether they really could have flavorful options in massive quantities. They hugely exceeded my expectations. There's not one change I would make to the menu. People adored it. Some of the favorites: mini chicken sausages, BLTs, brussels sprouts with lemon sauce, cauliflower with mint, flatbread, sliders, sweet potato fries, ice cream sundaes. I wish we could do it all over again. I wouldn't change a thing. read more

We really enjoyed our brunch at Roofers Union. We were a large group but the service was top notch. We started with doughnuts which were wonderful the berry sauce was the favorite over the chocolate sauce (though that was good too). Everyone enjoyed their entree too. The highlight of our visit was when my three year old (after not getting something he wanted) decided to separate himself (not too far away) from our group and mope. It wasn't too long before a server sat down on the floor to commiserate with him. A moment that could have become an embarrassing meltdown became a little entertainment for everyone in line of sight. Thanks Roofers Union for giving us an enjoyable morning...great food, great service. What more could you ask for? read more
