One of the things I liked for our party of 10 was they had no problems with seating as they also have many large round tables. For mixed drinks, they make them pretty big and potent. For my martini, they sent back an extra glass. They also had great bleu cheese stuffed olives. We ordered onion rings (8 large to an order) and fried zucchini. The onion ring I had was pretty good. I didn't have the fried zucchini but heard it was also pretty good. Other than the light fare items, all dinners come with their salad bar which has both iceberg lettuce and Caesar Salad along with many fixings as well as cheeses and bread. I had the Baked Seafood Platter which came with scallops, shrimp, Clam Casino (without the shell), Maryland crab cake and a small lobster tail for $49.99. My wife had the baked chicken breast which she said was quite dry. The dining area is quite large and reminds me of the restaurants at a casino. It was then I saw a woman behind the bar who appeared to be setting up for business. She also saw me and asked if she could be of service. I asked if the place was open? She explained that it was, and she would be happy to make me a cocktail, however, they rarely had customers this time of day midweek, and that if I was hungry the restaurant above would certainly be happy to take care of me. The conversation continued briefly as she explained the two businesses had a common owner and shared a kitchen with a slightly different, but mainly overlapping menu. The large dining room next door was shared, although there were several tables in the shadows as well as a few barstools. The darkness seemed appropriate; like a cave where many things could be hidden from view and likely to instill a sense of secrecy and even conspiracy, for example, a perfect stop for the Underground Railroad or a speakeasy during Prohibition. Realizing I was taking up her time, and that she had better things to do than listen to a stranger's fantasies, I excused myself and exited the door I had just entered. She smiled and nodded, as she continued wiping the glassware in preparation for the night's guests.

The bar tender was very nice, very courteous . Then the issues began to emerge. Keep in mind what time it is and there are only 6-7 people in the bar. The men's bathroom was filthy. Like there was excrement on the wall, trash cans over flowing and toilet paper on the wall, stuck to it. All over the floor. The bar tender said something to the manager and the excuse was that it was the bait parade the night before. They have had over 12 hours to clean the bathroom. The nachos were absolutely gross. Poured cheese, 3 jalapeños, cold chicken. Two years ago it was a mix of cheese and smoked chicken, and delicious. I hope the owners read this and take note. Your saving money on cheap ingredients will lose clientele. A gross bathroom should have you shut down. Do better. You have a great location and a special little bar.

It wasn't busy on an overcast rainy Thursday, and the staff took great care of us with brief history lesson and tips on what to see and do while in town. The weather kept our walking to a minimum, but what we saw was pure Americana. Lunch was also very good. We shared a new recipe for Brussel Sprouts that was delicious with bacon and balsamic mixed throughout. The tart, slightly bitter, mildly sweet composition hit the spot. Too, we shared a fresh Rockfish Sandwich, that was thinly coated and fried with something like aioli spread across the top, with pickles for contrast to the white fish filet. Tasty. Right beneath the back porch in what appears to be the basement, was the Hole in the Wall Bar, right next to another larger dining room that opened out onto a small patio for better weather, and just beyond the wide canal. We checked it out, but it wasn't quite ready for customers at that hour. If you enjoy American history in a picturesque colonial setting, check out Chesapeake City and Bayard House. The DJ hands out cards with songs and the artists in the squares. When the DJ plays a song, you mark that square if you have that song and artist (some have the same artist but with different songs). Once you have the right squares covered, BINGO! I didn't win but I helped identify a few songs for the winners. Oh by the way, get the Ceasars salad, it's a winner! I'll have various # of reviews per year. I moved to Alexandria from Arizona on Saturday, October 15, 2011. As a 27 year old at the time and being new to town, I wanted to check out the bar scene in various places like DC, Clarendon, other areas of Arlington, & the city I lived in Alexandria, more specifically Old Town. My scrapbook series of reviews will likely go into 2027 (but I'll get some done from 8/31 to whenever things get bad for me) as I may not be getting much if any Yelp reviews done in October-November time range due to high dose chemo with stem cell replacement. You never imagine what life throws your way. Sure, I had various issues when I was kid, teen, & in 20's, but pails in comparison to 40's for me. In the 20's, job situation was unstable, dating/women drama, etc. But you never imagine that at 15 year anniversary of being in DC area having to do high dose chemo. My experience at Murphy's in October 2011 & beyond: When I lived in Alexandria, this was my #1 favorite & go to bar. I liked a good Irish pub over some club or some generic bar, although I enjoyed some of those to in my 20's. Murphy's staff was cordial here, and beer was good. They had some music at times and could be crowded on a weekend. My 1st weekend in the DC area was October 15-16, 2011, I was busy with moving & settling in and starting job on that Monday. Following weekend I explored DC amongst other fun things. On the 3rd weekend, Friday, October 28, 2011, I explored the Old Town Alexandria bar scene and stumbled across Murphy's Irish Pub. It was also Halloween weekend and there were some people in costumes. I got a chick's phone #. Her name was Adele, like the singer. Tried to get a date with her but never panned out as she claimed to be busy with whatever else. I went to Murphy's a few other times and always enjoyed. I included pic of the October 2011 receipt from my scrapbook. I'm going to take a pic of each thing from scrapbook as that'll take more time, but I had to include the first thing at the very least. All the stuff in for the 2011-2017 living in Virginia era businesses included are just receipts.

The band was great and the atmosphere had that classic dive-bar Irish pub vibe lively, a little loud, and full of personality. If you're looking for a laid-back spot with live music and a good old-school pub feel, this place hits the mark. Glad I stopped in.

To begin - I ordered everything for Take Away My first order…read morewas the Gouda Soup and Fish n'chips. The soup was my favorite with a roasted red pepper base, like a bisque. The lump crab meat was quite substantial and equally sweet. Lovely! The fish n chips were good, probably better at the bar top as they were side in my take away container. Either way, no complaints! My second order was the Seafood Chowder, Irish rolls, and Paddy Melt. I'm a sucker for a Patty Melt and excited about the Irish Cheddar, but it was minimal, almost overlooked. A larger melt would have tasted heavenly. I added lettuce and tomato to my sandwich, but my container only had one slice for my two halves and it was the end piece of the tomato (intact). It was quite large, but again, in a container, very soft by the time I ate it. The seafood chowder was good, one of the better chowders I have eaten in MD. The Irish rolls were quite filling and I had to save 2 of the 4 for later. One of these days I'll sit at the bar top with a Guinness for the full experience.
