First time at Rookies and I found it a unassuming Sports Bar with a vibe that says it can go from 0 to 100 depending on the day/time. Pool tables, darts and a nice sized bar was just what I needed on a Tuesday night. Now...this is where it gets GOOD...I ordered a basic bacon cheeseburger with everything (and extra pickles) and I can say one of the BEST burgers I've had in a LOOOOOOONG TIME. Oh man. We ended up here because it was one of the only places still open at 9:30p near our hotel. I'd had myself all prepared for Mexican (margaritas and tacos are just sometimes what a girl needs), but that place ended up being closed. A sports bar would not normally be my second choice, but at this point we were desperate. Our party of 7 sat ourselves at a high top. And things went downhill from there... I thought for sure it was going to be a tough one when our waitress had trouble taking our order. She did not bring us menus. She had no idea what beers were on tap. She actually brought one of us over to the POS for help figuring out what the choices were and inputting the drink orders! She apologized so many times, saying it was only her third day working there. Why are you working the evening shift alone if it's only your third day?? Grrr... But that was the worst of it. Once we obtained menus and put in all the orders everything went fine. We told her up front that it was going to be separate checks, which I'm sure helped her a lot. She should have thought to ask that herself, but NBD. When the drinks and food and checks came, everything was accurate and we had no problem settling up. The food was good not great. Everything was decent except for the boiled egg on my salad (see photo). Bleh. The rest of the salad was unimaginative but edible. (Remember how exhausted and desperate we are by this point in the evening.) Other people's meals came with fries; I tried a few and they were pretty good. All in all, I think this is a typical local watering hole. You don't come here for fancy food or expensive cocktails; you come here to have a beer with your bros. This place is actually pretty good. It doesn't look like much on the outside (i.e. townie bar), but don't be fooled by appearances. It's located next to a gas station and is pretty non-descript on the outside. A couple tables on the sidewalk for smokers and a whole lot of dark tinted glass windows. Once you step inside though, it's much more accommodating. There's no smoking inside anymore (thank you smoking ban) which is a godsend because I can imagine just how thick the cigarette smoke was before. There's a little dance floor and sound system in the corner and I guess some nights they have karaoke and even a DJ. I was here for dinner so I didn't get to see any of that. Even without the entertainment, it was loud inside. I don't know if the acoustics are bad or we were just sitting next to a very loud table (the restaurant wasn't particularly busy), but be warned. Staff was very friendly and came around often to bring us drinks. They have beer and drink specials all the time and expect the usual domestics. The buffalo wings are very good. I drive delivery for doordash in my spare time. I had to pick up at this bar at 5:45 on a Monday afternoon. The female bartender was incredibly rude and acted like I was just taking up space that her not that many customers could be in to tip her. They had no clear online order pick-up process . And instead of simply saying "$xxx is your total today," she looked at me and went, "and how am I supposed to get paid for this ? " But that's not why they get a one-star review. It's not even because of the number of sexualized comments I received standing in that bar for the 20 minutes I was there. It was when she engaged in a joke with one of those male customers about how I should share a seat with him, and when I curtly told him no, about how he bites on request. read more

The atmosphere is what I expected for a bar, in a strip mall, on the west side of Indianapolis. However, the "DJ" was just...ugh. His music selection wasn't bad actually. I just recently came to Indianapolis due to a family emergency. During my stay, I wanted to go to a pub that was like a pub from my home town of Boston. I actually found one where everyone was friendly, and treated me as if I were an old friend. I found it funny that their exist a pub where everyone sits in the same bar stool and drinks the same drink they have for years, just like you see in the sitcom "Cheers." I was in town for two weeks and during my stay, once I found this quaint little pub, I became the "Norm" so to speak. If ever in Indy again I will make sure to make a stop at 10th and country club rd in hopes to see my old friends sitting at Rookies still talking about who they want to win the race, who won the super bowl, etc... It really is like going to a hick-town bar in the middle of the country. The staff is fine and so are the drinks.
