Who knew that a dive bar could have such great food? Apparently, it has been a known fact in my household that the Mousetrap slaps, but I've been ignorant to this fact because a) I'm somewhat bougie, and b) my bougie-ness sometimes clouds my thinking when it comes to good food, and c) I never think of a dive bar as a destination for food, let alone good food. Because how good can bar food be, really? Thus, the Mousetrap has always been on my list to visit, but only for drinks and maybe music. But on this particular day, the stars aligned, the universe sent children hither and yon, and I was asked to have an adults-only early dinner at Mousetrap, so that I could be shown how very wrong my ignorant opinions about dive-bar food -- or, at least, Mousetrap food -- have been. Wow! I am happy to admit that whatever I was thinking about the food at Mousetrap was all wrong. This bar punches above its weight, for sure. We got the cheeseburger and turkey melt, and both were amazing. The cheeseburger was thick and homemade, and it cost less than a wimpy burger you'd get at McDonald's. The turkey melt was perfectly toasted and had several slices of turkey and melty cheese. Burgers and sandwiches come with potato chips, but you can substitute fries for an additional fee. The chili is phenomenal, by the way. We got a cup of the chili because it says on the menu that it won awards. How can you not taste award-winning chili?! I can believe this chili is award-winning, because the chili at the Mousetrap is some of the best chili I've ever tasted. Get it with "everything," which comes with bacon, cheese, thin slices of jalapeño and sour cream. This is some dang chili I'll be dreaming about once the cold weather comes in. I should mention that all of the items on the menu have silly names. For instance, my turkey melt was called Turkey Melt Your Face, and the cheeseburger, for whatever inane reason, was called Built to Last. "I'm not saying any of these stupid names!" I said to everyone and no one as I slammed the menu down on the table. It turns out, the server knew exactly what I meant when I said "turkey melt." Imagine that. Luckily, the beer is called what it's called. I got the Destihl Brewery Deadhead Tour Bus, which is a hazy IPA, and I loved it. I don't drink beer very often, but when I do, I appreciate the hoppy IPAs. Speaking of The Dead, the Mousetrap has so much Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia stuff everywhere, inside and outside, that I expected to walk in and hear the band jamming over the speakers. My partner and I had been recommended this place by many people, and were excited to go for the first time! When we got there, we asked for menus, and the male staff member said it would be just a moment. He took multiple orders after that, then got stern with the female staff member. They both stood in front of us, and I asked again for a menu please! They went down the line and asked every other customer if they needed help... the female staff then pulled out a menu, and as I started to thank her, she began to silently read it to herself in front of us... not sure if this is a place where it's uncool to ask for menus or if they are just homophobic... very strange and felt rude! Stopped in on a Monday about 6pm. There wasn't much of an after work crowd. It did get busier as time went on. I preserved the hot stew and a cheeseburger. The burger was a hand pressed 8oz patty and was tasty. The star was the Hungarian stew which was made with chuck roast and had potatoes and carrots to the right proportion. Came here for dinner trivia and karaoke! This is definitely a divey bar. They have pool tables and a ping pong table. Several tables and chairs for seating and although we were at one of the last tables we could hear the trivia just fine! Karaoke was fun and I like they have a system where you scan a QR code and put in your name with the opportunity to search their selection of songs AND see the lineup of singers. I got the big Steve Fatty melt, and it was super good! The bread was grilled to perfection. They had a smash burger and in between and it was a massive amount of food for a good price. I loved how I gave my suggested kind of drink to the bartender and he was able to make me a pineapple whiskey surprise that was delicious and perfectly paired with a great alcohol percentage ! I just didn't care for how close the pool tables are to those sitting around the side. We almost got slapped by pool-sticks several times. It was packed to capacity and the seating options were extremely limited so we're forced to sit where we did. Mousetrap when you walk in instantly gives you that classic dive bar feel, bar, stage, dance floor, and a room with pool tables and darts. Really cheap pool! Only $0.50!!! YES. Go here! Stop scrolling and take the chance on this place. This had a typical hole in the wall bar feeling, only better. There is a large bar and stage, and I believe they have tables on the other side. We sat up at the bar, and within seconds we were greeted by the bartender. He was friendly, peppy, and although he was busy taking care of the entire bar by himself, he was QUICK. On their menu, they have a "famous for" section. We ordered two things from that menu, the tenderloin and chili. I went rogue and ordered the wings, because I'm always looking for a good wing. Let's start with the tenderloin... it is HUGE. If I didn't want to try so many things, my fiance and I could've EASILY split it and had some leftover. It was delicious and had a ton of flavor. The breading on there was perfect. Next up, the chili. It said it was grandma's recipe, and Grammy knew how to make an amazing chili. I will say I would've preferred it to be a little hotter (temperature wise) than what it actually was. I ended up getting a Togo bowl because I knew it'd be better hot. Finally, the wings. If you are looking for some amazing chicken wings in indy- this is it. They were big wings, had a ton of meat on them, and a lot of flavor. I got mild and garlic butter sauce, and I also tried the blackberry bourbon on the side. All of the sauces were delicious with it!! They are one of the best wings I've ever had in Indy. Guess what? Oh, c'mon. Take a guess. Okay, I'll tell ya. I had a beer tonight. No, really. I did. This awkwardly social, iced tea lovin' dude actually went out on a limb in honor of a friend's birthday and showed up for my first ever visit to Indy's Mousetrap Bar & Grill, one of Indy' oldest northside watering holes that sits right on the edge of what they call SoBro though in this case I think SoBro stands for "So, Bro. Aren't you glad they have security in this parking lot?" They do, by the way. Despite living relatively close to Mousetrap, I've never made it inside. I must confess that part of this was due to my expectation that the place would be ridiculously inaccessible to a guy in a wheelchair. Mousetrap will likely make it onto my list of Indy's dives, though to be fair it's got more of a retro vibe going than an actual dive thing. The place has existed since 1957 and now has the added benefit of being across the street from the new Meijer. There's a hippie sort of theme going on at Mousetrap, a theme that lives on in their almost nightly music that includes everything from hip-hop to 80's to jazz to bluegrass and more. They host trivia nights, open stage comedy nights and a whole lot more. I pulled into their private parking lot that is pretty decent sized. There were no actual designated "accessible" spots, a fact that can be a worry at times for someone like myself who really needs room for the wheelchair. However, I was able to find a spot pretty easily and it just happened to be right next to one of my friends who was also there for the same activity. So, it worked out perfectly. Once the music gets started, they do typically have a door charge but I think that varies from event to event. We were in the building well before the music started and were leaving by 9:30ish when it was just getting started. The entrance is pretty accessible, though if you're particularly weak in the upper body you might want to have someone with you as the entire surface isn't quite level. As you enter through the parking lot (there's also a front entrance off Keystone), there's a stage to the left, an area for dancing and/or tables, a bar further to the right, and a bunch of tables further down on the right. Tables are fairly movable, so you can flex things according to the size of your party. Before I left, I also saw another patron in a wheelchair. This was my kind of joint precisely because of the great diversity I saw and everyone had a great vibe and spirit. As one might expect, they have a full bar and a solid bar and grill menu with the obligatory sandwiches, pizza options and more. I actually didn't ask for iced tea - my gut was that they didn't have it, but I could be wrong. So, yeah. I had a Stella Artois (draft - bonus points!). There's an ultra casual vibe here. If you go in expecting to sit down and be waited on, you'll be disappointed. We went up to the bar to order and it was delivered after a few minutes. I went with the breaded tenderloin sandwich - it comes with chips, though you can upgrade to fries or tots for a buck. The sandwich is $10. It's a little on the steep side, but not a bad price as tenderloin seems to always be a touch higher. If I were rating the sandwich, I'd probably go 3.5 stars. The meat was juicy and a great texture, but could have used a bit more flavor and the bun was really underwhelming. Still, I was happy and I'd say it's better than much of what you find in the bar and grill scene. I had once been invited to do the comedy open stage at Mousetrap and after this visit I'm thinking maybe I should, though the stage itself is not accessible - it's got a couple steps up to it. Very few bar stages are accessible - heck, that's part of what I make fun of in my comedy act. I felt very comfortable here. The people were friendly, both staff and customers. The food was good, the prices were fair and I like the fact that they keep an eye on the parking lot. When a bar survives this long, you know they're doing something right. Mousetrap? They're doing a whole lot right. It may not be the best bar you'll ever go to, but with lots of activities and a community spirit it may very well be a place you'll look forward to going back to. read more

Love this place. Don't be put off by the looks of the outside or the clientele. The people and staff here are super nice. Yes, people will look at you when you walk in if your not a regular but that's the same anywhere. The drink prices are awesome and the food (only ate here twice) was above typical bar food. We searched high and low for a place to play ping pong in Mid-town and Mousetrap came through for us! It was my first time stepping into this place (though living blocks away) and really thought it was a great change of pace from the typical Broad Ripple scene. Nothing trendy or cute about this place--I loved it! Reasonably priced bar food (read: fried) and drinks. We had great service and got to finally play some ping pong. I can only review their take out service as I have never been to this bar until COVID-19. In honor to only eat local places during quarantine, we placed an order from here regardless of never stepping foot into the bar. We did pick it up and they were very friendly... so I guess I have stepped foot into the bar. First, off their fried mushrooms...don't hesitate to order them. THEY ARE AMAZING. Their horseradish sauce is the icing on the cake with the mushrooms. The rest of our order was delicious. My only real critique is that their tenderloin is huge (not the issue) so they serve it on a rather large bun that kind of outweighs the sandwich... it is a lot of bread. First me and my aunt ordered "the deal" which is an $11 sirloin with potatoes and green beans and we wanted them prepared medium. They were overcooked and extra well done, in addition to being overcooked the mashed potatoes and green beans were cold. I returned them both, my aunt requested a recook on her steak I preferred chicken tenders instead. Her steak came out about 20 minutes later. I did not receive my tenders at any point. . I've been going into the Mousetrap off and on for thirty-five years now; since the early '80s when I lived in the area and patronized the laundromat just north of there. My routine was to put a load of clothes in a washer and then walk across to the Mousetrap for a drink. Then I would go back and move my clothes into a dryer and return to the Mousetrap for another drink or two. It made the weekly trip to the laundromat much less tedious. Later the Mousetrap became the place my friend Jim and I would meet on Friday evenings to have a bite to eat and shoot pool at the end of a work week. Most recently I've been stopping by on the occasional Monday night to participate in the trivia contest and enjoy the local comedians on the open mic. The Mousetrap has a fair pub grub menu and well drinks for $4, but that's not what this place is about. It's all about the atmosphere. If you love a good hole-in-the-wall dive bar, this place is for you. There were a surprising amount of patrons there at 1:30pm on a Sunday but service was still super quick. They had decent specials and a good amount of domestic and craft beer on draft. They also had a very tempting menu and I could smell a guy's nachos from across the bar which almost convinced me to get a second lunch. You don't get more unassuming that Sobro's own 'trap'. Tonight was a case in point. Walking into a restaurant with 11 TV's and a 1/2 dozen light bulb's provides the basement atmosphere that this place presents. The only patrons are stooled at the bar, exhaling cigarette breath to beat the band. No servers on duty, food and drinks are ordered at the bar. Pawing through the dark to find a table, the plastic sealed menus brings the Road House feel - did someone just throw a beer? We're living on the edge.. Speaking of beer, IPA fans rejoice - Terrapin's Executioner graces the chalkboard and my mug. $5 is more than reasonable for this quaff. A red sky presents itself out the western windows in a gracious sunset. (In the foreground a crime unit van adds local neighborhood color) Examining the menu we're greeted with "best tenderloin in Indy" (8oz available grilled). Veggie Quesadilla "best in town". Grandma Reilly's Chili voted #1 by IndyStar. $10 steak dinner. Wow!! My wife opts for the Hungarian Stew, original recipe from Indy's historical "John's Famous Stew". Two of us opt for the 1/2 pound burger - cooked perfectly. Crispy exterior meets grilled flavor. This burger is as good as any I've had anywhere. My IPhone flashlight comes in handy to illuminate our food. The crinkle cut fries are long and hot, begging for a ketchup dunk. People are piling in for trivia night as we head out. This is a HUGE bar with pool tables, TVs, a dance floor and stage, and plenty of seating. They also have food...pretty good bar food, including stew. The "spicy stew" should not be underestimated...that stuff is HOT! This is the last smoking bar in the city that I will go to, and that's only on nights I want to hear a band play. What sets the Mousetrap apart from many other bars in this city is that there's a lot of good live music and people dance and have a good time. The type of music varies greatly, I tend to make it out for the bluegrass shows...check their online calendar for details on who is playing on a certain night. The lost star is for how smoky the place is. If I came home, literally, smelling of shit after going to a bar, I would never go there again...no one would. Yet somehow it's ok in our collective minds to come home reeking of smoke? Nasty. I almost gagged in the shower the next morning when the water hit my hair and released that smell all over again. Luckily, New Old Cavalry and Twin Cats are worth it. After reading the "additional tips" section...Yelp seems to think this is a restaurant. The "outdoor seating" is more like benches on a tiny deck.
