This is the first Yelp review that I've ever done. I got my haircut at this joint yesterday. I walked in today, Saturday, to ask my stylist a question. There was no one waiting in the store and only one customer in a chair. The lady at the desk first refused to let me talk to the hairstylist. She was quite obnoxious, in my opinion and said I had to come back when my hair cut lady was done with her current customer. I've been to her a couple of times and even she didn't at least turn around to acknowledge me. The question and answer wound have take. 30 seconds at the most. Crazy stuff. Just moved to the area payed top dollar for a well below average cut. I get a simple haircut. Skin fade and trim the top. Looked like a bowl cut when I was done. Had to rush over to another shop down the street to fix my hair. I really don't like doing this but if I'm paying you 35 dollars to you cut my hair, Make sure you know how to cut hair. read more

The validity of a great haircut is how many compliments you receive from your acquaintances following the chopping block. After Saturday's visit to Roosters, I've received 5-star feedback from friends out the wazoo. I think the key to a successful barbershop is consistency, and although I'm not a fan of awarding 5 stars after just one visit, I can't neglect the facts. Roosters, originally born in Texas, opened in San Marco a couple of months ago. Even though I've been regularly visiting a specific barbershop for the last six months, I might have found a new home here. Doug, you sweet magician. Not only is this guy witty, hilarious, and intellectual, the dude can flat out make you look desirable. Additionally, the Roosters way includes a more high end experience for men, as opposed to your typical barbershop's barbershop. The extra $10 for a higher quality experience is worth it, in my opinion. I was so engaged in conversation with Doug and buying a new pomade that I forgot to show use my Yelp check-in offer! #SadDay The fact that Roosters is in my 'hood makes me a very happy camper. This was a nice place. It's not exactly the premium shave and a haircut experience I was expecting for $55 + tip, but there's no denying it's a step up from your average Sport Clips MVP experience. They put about 12 different lotions on your face covering every aroma known to man, interspersed with 6 different hot/cold towel applications. That haircut was speedy and professional, and made my embarrassing patch-work of bald spots and grey look presentable. My biggest (and really only) issue was the shave itself. Instead of breaking out the straight razor, he whipped out your run-of-the-mill Schick disposable and started shaving my face. If I'm paying premium price for a shave, I'd rather it was closer that what I could get on my own at the CVS across the street. Did he do a good job? Absolutely. Did he do better than I would have on my own? Most definitely. But everyone knows that it is more luxurious to have the straight razor shave with the hot cream. That would have made this a 5-star review and caused me to return more often than I will. read more

Meh. Give them 3 stars only because the first haircut I got from Tony was decent. The one yesterday, "not so much" as they say. I made an appointment for later in the day and should have waved off under circumstances. The guy right before me was obviously very pissed off when he left. Did not say a word and stormed out. I'm thinking, "well that's no OK" but I decided since I was there, I'd follow through. Bottom line is Tony was off his game. I have had better haircuts at great clips but I have chosen to spend the extra $$$'s but in this case it was money poorly spent. After Tony was finished and I put my specs back on I noticed it was not right. Kind of an alfalfa thing going on the left side of my head (reference to the little rascals). I called him on it. His response was "that's the exact same haircut I gave you last time!". Two thoughts went through my head. First one is how can you possibly remember since you had to have done hundreds of cuts since then. The second was, maybe it's ok. After I take a shower in the AM I'll see what it looks like. Well, just call me alfalfa. I'll have somebody else fix it. My advice would be to go early. I certainly learned my lesson read more

Depending on who does your cut and beard trim, they are great. The lady I had a few weeks ago, however, took forever and did a terrible job. She took over an hour, and did not do a good job at all. My skin high fade was not skin, it wasn't high, and it was very uneven. My beard was half trimmed, like the left half was shorter than the right, same with my mustache. You could tell that she was out of her depth. I spent $65 (before tip) just for a hack job. I tried to review on google, but apparently negative reviews are blocked, so here I am. read more

I made an appointment to get a haircut. Leave work early to get there on time only to find out that the guy who was supposed to cut my hair just up and left in the morning. So I show up like a Jack ass and I am told by some woman with a piss poor attitude and absolutely no empathy that they can't help. Then some slap dick comes from the back to say he is busy and also can't help... I asked why no one called to give me a courtesy heads up and thats where it all goes to shit. The guy says I called the number on file and no one picked up. So I check my phone and confirm that he is full of it. He then proceeds to stumble through some horse shit excuse about how they must have the wrong number on file. Really? So you guys text me all the time and I sign in through my phone to make appointments but now you have the wrong number? Just straight lying to people now. Ok, cool so can you accommodate? Let's be perfectly clear, I hate having to find a new barber. I recently moved back to the area after 30 years in the Northeast where for nearly 20 of them, the incomparable Gabrielle Rice of Lords & Ladies Formals kept me looking like I was not a bum stuck in one decade in the distant past. Coming back to the Jax area, it's been tough to find the right place. I am certain there are fine establishments throughout the Jacksonville area and surrounding communities, but I have simple process in life. Find competent people, let them work, and pay them. So when I go to a barber and tell them that I want it tight on the sides and long enough to style but not comb over because I know my hair is thinning and I am not trying to hide anything, and, if possible, please keep me looking relevant, but not hip, I expect that to be enough information because it was enough information for Gabrielle Rice. Sadly, that is not often the case. But it was with Melissa at Roosters Men's Grooming Center (Jacksonville, FL). More importantly, Melissa took the information I gave her, told me what she was going to do, and then did it. This resulted in an efficient use of my time and a great haircut. And yes, you will pay a premium for the service, but it is not a surprise. All the prices are posted, in large type, with detailed descriptions. If your bill is a surprise, you have not been paying attention. And, icing on the cake, look at the hours. Open during the week until 8:00 PM? Open on Sunday? A great haircut by Edele, Roosters was a neat & tidy barber shop. She was super personable, price was on point & my son left with a crisp new wig chop. Roosters lost a star for a few reasons albeit both mostly out of their control. Because of their faulty online system that another reviewer mentioned, I was unable to login to create an appointment even after going through the entire process of creating an account. The second reason being parking, next time I'll allow a few minutes extra to circle the square for parking since the Roosters lot was jam packed. Regardless we'll be back! read more

Breath of fresh air from other "barbers" I've been to in the past. I was able to make an appointment the same day, which I wouldn't have been upset if they couldn't accommodate me given the short notice. They did however, which was nice. I didn't know who to have cut my hair given this was my first time, so I was scheduled with Doug. Let me tell you, Doug was not only hilarious but a hell of a barber too. I opted for the cut/shave combo to treat myself. He was very attentive to detail and I could tell he was insistent on perfecting what I asked. Between the great cut/shave and Doug making light of my grey hair coming in, calling it Platinum Blond, it was a relaxing experience. The shave is relaxing enough to put you to sleep. There were several other people working which I did not catch their names, but all were pleasant and smiled when eye contact was made. Perfect location as well to grab lunch after in San Marco. This was going to be my place. My barber. I purchased a home in San Marco and was really happy about finding a local place that I could support and pay a premium for a nice experience. I went for a cut like I have numerous times in the past. However this time, I had my daughter. I asked if they could give her a quick trim as well. The lady I asked was very nice and asked another gentleman near the front. He stated that he cut a females hair the previous week and was told by the owner, if he cut another females hair, he could work somewhere else. I am a Dad to a female and want to raise her to know that she is able to do anything a male can. I refuse to support anywhere that excludes females or objectifies them. Unfortunately, this place excludes them. I will never step foot in the place again and I will tell every person I can to avoid them. Very disappointed. read more

If you like the smell of cigarettes on the fingers going through your hair, then you will probably enjoy this barber shop. I however do not enjoy that scent, and it comes off unprofessional. The haircut was fine no complaints there. The prices are quite steep for just a traditional haircut, other places I go are nearly half the price. Two of my sons were attempting to grow their hair long and then they decided it looked terrible. They wanted a professional haircut and didn't want to risk "Mom and Dad" cutting their hair.
