First time at Roosterspin on a Saturday night with friends and it was just okay. Two of us had ramen and it was good but nothing very special. We ordered the large fried chicken platter. I just find the whole platter is a bit strange. Why the drumsticks? And why don't they have just wings or a breast option? The main reason I am only giving three stars is because of the extremely loud and disruptive band playing music in a very tiny space. We were struggling to hear each other talk at our table, even being right next to each other. This is a very cool , musically themed space. There are hundreds, if not thousands of classic jazz lps shelved on the back wall ( hence the spin in the restaurant name) The menu is pretty extensive with not many selections that don't sound great. Unfortunately the waitress didn't help narrow our choices down by suggesting 5-6 that we needed to try. We settled on the Korean seafood pancake, panko cheese curds and Bulgogi sliders for appetizers. All were very good with the sliders standing out. Cooked perfectly with pckled oniins, a harmonious blend with some jalapeño mayo on the side. The obvious entree choices were the fried chicken and GF rice waffle. The chicken was crazy crunchy with the spicy version just below the " too freakin hot" level. Overall a great experience, I'll be back if I find myself in Westfield again. Up until Saturday night, I'm not sure I would have been able to answer that question, maybe it was Stroud's in Kansas City? Well, now I do have a definitive favorite -and the answer (drum-roll, or drumstick (?) please, is Roosterspin, a Korean restaurant in Westfield, NJ. Three of us went for their large serving ($23) of "FAMOUS DOUBLE FRIED CHICKEN". They double fry it in soybean oil so the fat in the chicken skin disintegrates. So there is zero sogginess, and only a feathery light super crisp crust and juicy meat are left behind. There is ZERO grease, which is something you can't say about most Close Encounters of the Fried Chicken Kind. You can finish your wings with three sauces, and we opted for the Soy Garlic which was great. Seriously, this was the best fried chicken I ever had. After our wing feast, we split three small plates - A Seafood Pajean (Korean traditional pancake with shrimp, calamari, and scallions for $14, an R-Waffle (Homemade chapssal (sweet rice) waffle ($9) that's crunchy on the outside & chewy on the inside with your choice of syrups), and STEAMED MANDOO (Korean dumplings for $13). We all liked the dumplings and waffle best. Roosterspin is a BYOB establishment and our server brought out a bottle opener to take the caps off of our bottles. Having worked in Korean Town, my standards for Korean food are always very high. Roosterspin was recommended to me by some friends and family so I decided to give it a shot. Boy was it worth it! First off, if you are planning to come here for dinner get here early or book a reservation. Second, parking stinks so your best bet is to find the first spot in downtown Westfield and walk. Third, always always always order the fried chicken! I started with the steamed bulgogi buns which were light but very flavorful. Because the chicken usually takes about 20-30 minutes to cook, i usually order something else to keep my tastebuds satisfied. This time I ordered the miso ramen bowl which was nothing short of perfection. The broth was extremely tasteful as the scallion, pork and boiled egg complimented the dish. Now onto the chicken- I ordered the half and half as I was splitting it with friends. It's always twice fried which makes the skin crispy but very flaky (this is a good thing). Fun Korean bar food spot in an otherwise Asian food desert. The Korean fried chicken here is legit - double fried, crispy light skin on the outside and tender on the inside. The glazes are also on point - big fan of both the soy garlic and the spicy glazes. I also really appreciate the delicious little pickled daikons that come with the KFC - nice touch! We tried a few of the apps here as well - while all fairly small in size, they packed good flavor. The Jap chae flavors and consistency were great - just wish there was a lot more of it. The kalbi was also finger licking good - but only came with a few slices. The seafood pancake was a bit thick for my taste, but it was generously packed with seafood and the consistency was fluffy yet crispy. Also loved how they offer a few varieties of freshly squeezed sugarcane juice. A fun alternative drink. I came across this place with fairly high rating on Yelp and was excited to give it a try. They seem to be very popular for their Korean style fried chicken. As a person that's very familiar with Korean style fried chicken it was very underwhelming. The pieces were so tiny for the price, and their soy garlic had zero flavor. The spicy ones were actually pretty good but I don't know what I tasted for soy garlic ones and it was confusing flavor for me. The cucumbers which I thought was a pickle at first did not pair well with the chicken at all. The fries were probably the best dish I tried here and it was really good- i would get the fries again. The chicken sandwich was pretty good but didn't really taste the spicy flavor that I chose. All in all- the food was not bad. What really killed my experience was how long it took me to get my food. I got my first dish 45 mins after ordering. No one came to check in or anything for the 45 mins of me sitting there. When I finally asked about the status, then they realized that there were some issues with my order. When we walked in on a Friday evening, he goes, "Do you have a reservation?" When we told him no, his reply was, "Uhhhh ... you really should have a reservation. We're super busy on Fridays and Saturdays." I looked around, there were plenty of open spots. He then said that they recommend putting in a reservation 24 hours ahead of time?!?!? Are you kidding me? Stop. You're not in Midtown. And within 3-5 mins, the other hostess was able to find us a table so I don't know what he was even talking about. Also, they refused to tell us how long the wait was - they just said to wait and they'll see what they could do -- uhhh ... There's really no "waiting area" so you're in everyone's way the whole time. So, bad mood unlocked. So, we finally sit down: the double-fried wings were just okay. The wings here at Roosterspin quickly stopped being crunchy. The spicy soy garlic was spicy for the sake of being spicy and after a while, my mouth was just numbed. The cheese curds were small because cheese curds are small and once deep fried, you lose the cheese. It melted away. The pork steam buns were okay. The best Korean fried chicken (KFC) I've ever had! This chicken has a refined double-fried crispy and light coating that's never greasy, a juicy interior, and a tasty garlic-soy sauce. I ordered half spicy/half normal which I recommend if you're trying it for the first time. The spicy version's mild but builds as you continue to feast. If you're eating-in, order this early since it's made-to-order. Then the Tempura Cheese Curds - GET THIS! They're a little pricey at $12 but the squeaky goodness of the Wisconsin curds in a light, crunchy shell and the very slight kick of the jalapeno sauce - so worth it. Then their Spicy Tuna Roll's huge, delicious, and spicy (¬‿¬). Off of the Kid's Menu, the Korean Corn Dog was pretty good with a light, slightly sweet fried coating that's somewhere between angel food cake and funnel cake in consistency. While they only offer wine for spirits, they prepare nice sangrias from either their wine for $32 or yours for $12. It's also BYOB, so feel free to bring beer or rum, vodka, etc. to add to their yummy Mocktail offerings. Initially, their location was hard to find without a street-facing sign, but it's right by the Westfield Train Station. I'm glad I read the tips on Yelp about bringing your own wine for them to turn into sangria. It was excellent, and a lot cheaper than having them make sangria with their wine. Our service was a little disorganized. They messed up one of our orders, required a lot of reminders to bring out silverware, and food we didn't order landed on our table more than once. They also need to work on their pacing, as they brought everything out all at once and there was no room on our table. We shared the galbi, wings (half and half), kimchi pajeon, tuna tataki, miso ramen, bulgolgi and pork steamed buns, tempura cheese curds, and garlic fried rice. The wings, their pricey signature dish, were exceptional - a solid 5 stars. They're double fried and have a light, cripsy crust. It takes a bit of time for them to make them, so order them as soon as you sit down. They're not very spicy - not even the ones that are supposed to be. The ramen was a poor excuse for ramen. This place is Korean fusion, which is awesome!! The ambiance is great, and they can accommodate pretty large size groups (make reservations). The reason for the 3-star average review for such a fun place with decent food is that we got mixed results for food / service. Initially, the service was great. The server was attentive and friendly. However, when a large party using one of the party rooms in the back (you can rent them by the hour and they have karaoke), most of the servers went to attend to them. This meant I was asking random busboys or different servers for things I needed (i.e. drink refill). They should have dedicated servers for the party room rather than split between main dining room and party rooms! Next, the food. We weren't that hungry, so we opted for an order of large soy garlic wings with a side of roosterspin fries and an order of the sae-ssak bibimbap - brisket. The wings were solidly good! Very crispy and on par with some of the best Korean wings (looking at you, BonChon) around. They may even be more crispy than the ones at Chicken & Beer in Palisades park. That's when things started to go downhill. The fries were $9... $9 for fries that some were half-cooked (hard in the center) with a side of ketchup and aoili. Don't get this if you're expecting to be blown away, and it's quite frankly very expensive!! The bacon mustard is like a light mustard with very very faint hint of bacon. I was very disappointed in this! Next, the bibimbap. I've had a LOT of bibimbap and always appreciate the crispy rice the forms at the bottom and having a half-raw egg to mix in to it. How disappointed were we that the egg in this dish was a quial egg!!! So tiny, so disappointing! Also, not sure if they've changed their menu, but I was fully expecting SOME veggies in this dish. All that was given was meat, tiny egg, and mushrooms. Definitely not a great dish and was pretty salty! There are other interesting items on the menu that looked interesting enough for us to want to go back to try -- but these items that disappointed will not be ordered again. Hoping to have a better dining experience here the next time! Also, this place is BYOB -- wish I knew that before coming. My family and I have been coming to Rooster Spin for over 3 years. Consistency is key at this establishment. Every menu item that I have tried has never dissapointed and the level of service is impeccable. Jordan is one of our favorite waiters and knows our order. I am a vegetarian and highly reccomend the Korean Fried Cauliflower. The Meat Eaters in my family enjoy the chicken - half n half, so you can try BOTH the spicy and the traditional. Service sucks--Sorry to be blunt but you should know this up front. I don't care how good the food is if you're treated badly. First of all, if you make a reservation through open table the hostess claims you're automatically sat at the bar. At this "bar" be prepared to be bumped into and have a front row seat at busboys unhygienically drying plates and silverware with rags. Your waitress will probably also forget about you. Something of note: Even though the hostess claimed there were no available tables, other two tops remained empty the whole time we were there. Now the food--while the chicken is indeed delicious I would say you're better off getting bonchon. The "small" plates are also extremely over priced. Walked in for lunch with a group of four. The restaurant is next to the train station and is hipster and classy. Vibe is awesome. Unique food with a Korean twist. We ordered a pitcher of sangria. Presentation was great taste was great too. They poured for us which is always a plus. We ordered kimchi fries and they were 5/5 amazing. Well fried with spices with a nice cheese sauce. We ordered corn on the cob, presentation was great came with mini skewers so you don't get your hands dirty. The spice mixture on the corn was decent could of been better. We ordered the fried dumplings they were amazing. Well fried plus the inside was great. Service is amazing they are on there game. What I loved the most about this place is the atmosphere! It has character with its seats made from old cars and the mason jars lighting up the room. Its cozy! Its also BYOB which makes me happy. The service was friendly and helpful. Parking lot outside which you pay the meters until i believe 7pm. We got the roosterspin fries which were good. Very thick, maybe a little too thick, but still tasty. The only mustard mayo sauce that it came with was amazing. We got the infamous fried chicken here. The spicy is pretty spicy. I would recommend doing half half or regular unless you truly love spice. It was juicy, flavorful, and crispy. This place was amazing!! The service was great, and every single thing we tried was delicious. They have covered outdoor seating for COVID with a good amount of tables. We tried- 1. Ramen shrimp tacos- the ramen had some dry seasoning on it and was really flavorful, and the shrimp inside was so yummy and flavorful also. It was a bit difficult to eat but I'd recommend trying these! 2. Crispy pork buns- I usually don't like pork buns but these were so great. The pork was tender and not that chewy rubbery texture that it can sometimes have. The sauce inside was amazing. 3. Of course, the fried chicken-The crisp on the chicken was unreal, I've never had chicken that crispy. It was as hard as a candy shell, the chicken was so juicy and the spicy sauce was so good. 4. I had some sort of cantaloupe mixed drink, and it was really good, but not sure if it really had much alcohol in it.
