This is a great find! The atmosphere is casual and inviting. It was right across from the hotel and convenient. I had the "meatloaf" which was brisket/short rib combined with a nice sauce on top. I admit, I checked out the restaurants in the area before we arrived on our 4 day stay and I knew this had to be one of our stops. Anytime else do that? Funny enough, we had visited a sister restaurant by the same owners in Miami a few years ago and loved it. The menu was different (more seafood based) but the vibe was the same...laid back, fun and in a super cute setting. We sat in the bar area and we're there for happy hour. Honestly folks, you can't beat the happy hour prices for both food or drinks. I went with a glass of wine and hubby had a beer on draft. We decided on fried pickles because who doesn't love them? I know fried pickles and wine... Not the most common combo but that's how I role. For our entrees we both had chicken. And let me tell you, it was cooked perfectly. The crispy skin was amazing! You shouldn't be shocked that I ate the skin, I had just finished fried pickles so I knew there would be nothing healthy about this meal!! The biscuit was also very good. And did I mention the happy hour prices... Bonus!! Our waitress was the bartender and she was so great. She was warm and friendly and made our great experience even better! We ordered the smoked fish dip and the cornbread appetizers. They were both amazing! Such a unique taste. We would go back just for those. We really liked that they were not the typical type of appetizer you see at other restaurants. I got the salmon and asparagus dish. So good. Again, a unique way to prepare salmon, like I've never had before. The asparagus spears were humongous, also good. My son, who said he wasn't too hungry and is also picky, slammed the pimento burger. My daughter enjoyed the spicy chicken sandwich and mac and cheese. Hubby got the ribs, which were so tender and fell right off the bones. Finally, we got the banana pudding crème brulee and it was fantastic! We can't wait to go there again and will definitely recommend this place to others. The waitress was very attentive and polite. The food was absolutely delicious! I had Shrimp & grits and I can actually say they were the best shrimp & grits I have had in the North. My husband had BBQ spare ribs that he said were very good. He added French fries and they came with 2 different sauces. The ambiance was a nice industrial look. Tables were set with old china, a very nice cloth napkin and a candle. The only negative was the sunlight coming through the drawn shade. The light was almost blinding. We will definitely be back. This was a solid dinner in Chesterton. We skipped the cocktails, and ordered biscuits for the appetizer. I didn't realize it only came with two, but there were two of us, so it worked! The biscuits were so fluffy! I like a saltier biscuit but there was flaky salt on the side so I could adjust to my taste. The decor is cute without being too much. We didn't find the chairs all that comfortable but it was manageable. I ordered the peach salad. Peppery arugula, sweet peaches, hot honey adding some spice, and of course burrata. It was really good! For my entree I went with the fried chicken. It doesn't come with sides but since I had a salad and a biscuit that was not a problem. The fried chicken was well done but needed more seasoning in my opinion. My husband had the brisket meatloaf that came with potatoes and asparagus and he really enjoyed it. A lovely restaurant with great decor. My rating is more related to the price point for the volume and quality of food being served here. We had a good variety of things starting with crab cake hush puppies that were limited in flavor and were paired with a green goddess sauce that didn't add anything to the dish, at $14 (which is typical for an appetizer) it came with 3 which was surprising because they were pretty small. For entrees we tried the roasted butternut squash and what they call the crowd favorite their famous fried chicken. At $21 the roasted butternut squash was just okay and something I felt like I could make at home, it was their only vegan dish and I wished there was a bit more of a wow factor or at least had a pairing that complimented it as it came with none so we just got fries for the table. The fried chicken wasn't bad, but if you're titling it as "famous" it would've been better to have more seasoning throughout but the quality of the fry was awesome. The staff were welcoming and the restaurant itself was beautiful. The drinks were good and we got 2 rounds! Decided to take the trek out to Chesterton to try out this new eatery, about an hour drive from St. John. The restaurant is part of a little strip center with other small restaurants and stores. We made reservations and were seated within a few minutes. The restaurant appeared to be full with only two other people waiting to be seated. The decor was somewhat minimal, but I would call it farmhouse chic? There were old plates hung on the wall and wooden doors hanging from the ceiling. Not sure if there's a backstory. Didn't really understand the whole thing. Service was fine. Waitress was friendly and attentive. Ordered all apps so we could try out a lot of different things. We tried fried chicken and biscuits, BLT, crabcakes, mac & cheese and Brussel sprouts. Chicken & biscuits was my favorite. They add some type of jam or glaze to it and there's a good balance of sweet and savory. Next fave was the Brussel sprouts. Not sure what all is in it but it if you closed your eyes it tastes like a warm McDonald's apple pie from back in the day. If you know, you know. Didn't care for the other apps. Mac & cheese had no flavor. The BLT was just a fried green tomato with pork belly on top. The tomato needed to be cooked longer. Too crisp. The crab cakes were a bit too fishy for me although wife like them. I'm not a big seafoodie so you can probably disregard my opinion on this. The coleslaw that came with it didn't taste right. No me gusta. All in all, I would have rather saved the trip and had Culver's or something. But seriously, it's not bad. A little pricey. We just had apps and one drink and it came out to over $100. The housemade lemon thyme vinaigrette was delicious!We each had a cocktails. The bourbon came with a clear big rock which was an exceptional touch we thought. Mine was a blueberry inspired creation that was beautifully presented, generously poured and sweetly delicious. The menu offers something for every taste but is not expansive. We splurged and had the keylime dessert and the shortcake. The keylime ranked better than the shortcake for sure. All the food tasted very authentic/fresh/ and was creatively plated. The server did a nice job. The decor is nicely done but not overstated. There is a separate bar area with tv's if you prefer that kind of seating or perhaps eating alone. For a small town, this restaurant is quite nice. It's location near the Hilton Garden Inn which is within walking distance will hopefully keep business regular and locals returning. The crab cakes were really crab heavy, which is the way that they should be! They were awesome with the remoulade. The biscuits were good, but I would prefer both sweet and savory condiment options, they only have a savory option. I had the half chicken and hot honey sauce, which was definitely the star of the show. The hot honey sauce is incredible! We had fries, mac and cheese, corn soufflé, and grits. We preferred the fries that come with a great (ranch?) sauce on the side. Another standout was the banana pudding crème brûlée. I never order dessert, but this is worth it! I really like the ambiance of this place. Nice fixtures and color scheme make the place very open. Old doors on the ceiling are a unique touch. We each got a drink, the garnish on the bloody mary was decadent without being an entire meal. I was disappointed in the chicken & biscuits appetizer the biscuits were small and over cooked and the chicken was dry. We ordered the drunken deviled eggs appetizer we 2 small tiny eggs with more dill on top of that should have been considered illegal. We also ordered a wedge salad was so much not a wedge, but Romain leaves and not the good part of the Romain but the green dark leaves, sprinkle very lightly with some sort of blue cheese dressing and corn kernels? oh my god then we got the bill they should be ashamed to charge that much for those tiny potions. It was my birthday and I chose Root & Bone based on a very good previous meal. Our server was excellent. The place wasn't busy; we probably were the only couple seated. I had enjoyed the brisket the last time, and when the waiter said the special was Beef brisket Stroganoff over homemade noodles, we both ordered it. The noodles were good, but I doubt there was more than a couple of ounces of shredded meat mixed in. We ordered peach pie ala mode to share, and it was excellent. I ordered the chocolate bread pudding to go. It consisted of chocolate sauce with softened bread. But at the bottom of the dish was a substance like cardboard. It was inedible. I can only guess that it started out as bread but became overly hard from a caramelization that ran amok. It's a shame, as we will always choose independent restaurants over a chain whenever we go out to eat. read more

Just had a delicious meal at Root and Bone. What a great find! Arrived after completing a 350 mile trip across the Ohio/Indiana Turnpike and were desperate for some heathy food with vegetables. We started with a Daisy May and a Peach Smash cocktail. Both very tasty (I had a second Daisy May). Then had two orders of the Grandma's biscuits - warm and delicious - along with the Grilled Peach Burrata salad (excellent). Next we had the Salmon and the Brick Chicken entrees (also very tasty) and wrapped up the meal with warm Peach pie with ice cream (amazing). Both of our bellies were full and happy. What came on the plate was spring mix straight out of the bag with two radish slices. Huh? For $13? "Full" rack of spare ribs was $36 for nine ribs. Coffee was room temperature. And got seated squished up against a post that made it difficult to eat in a roomful of open tables. Well first impression as you walk in is great, clean and rustic. Service was good however when it came to the meal disappointed. The plates looked great however my wife found a large piece of plastic from the cheese in her salad. The staff just said they were sorry, never offered to make a new salad. I had the Duck breast dinner. Look great however the meal was cold should have sent it back but did not. The meal for the price point left me hungry. No dinner salad, rolls just seem very high price point for the meal. Not sure if we will go back. They did not even take anything off the bill for the plastic rap from the cheese. Chesterton's newest place was a nice choice for dinner. The ladies in our party all had the pecan old fashioneds and they were a hit. For appetizers, we got biscuits, which were great. We got the Mushroom ragout, which didn't make any sense, it's more like something you would put over a steak or you could dip the biscuits. That was a miss. The brussels sprouts were a hit though. We talked with the tables around us and compared food. It was very fun. I was going to get the duck but the table next to us talked me out of it because she thought her duck was over cooked. I went with the pork chop. The ladies had salmon. They were pleased with the salmon. My pork was slightly over cooked, which made it dry. I know that pork is tricky, but I was disappointed. Our waitress Liz was good, but I think she had 100 tables (an exaggeration) so she was hustling. For dessert I had the banana foster crème Brule, it was nice.
