My wife decided on this restaurant for her birthday dinner. It looked promising due to being kid-friendly, along with a great menu. The kids drinks were great, fun flavors and little toys on top. That was the only good part of this meal, and earned the second star. The service was a nightmare. After ordering, we got our drinks, and refills were never even considered or offered after that. The waitress was nowhere to be found. My wife had to flag her down just to ask for a refill after about 45 minutes, and asked for more popcorn which never showed up. No apologies from the staff, other than "The kitchen is slammed, we are waiting on one thing." then another 20 minutes of absolutely nothing. Over an hour wait for food, which was then cold, other than some mini corn dogs for one of the kids. I guess that's what takes an hour to make while the rest sits cold? The food was probably good when it was fresh, maybe? Who knows, we didn't get that chance. Several other tables were upset and asked for a manager. We overheard that they were told there were no managers on site. Seems convenient, but would explain why everything was run so poorly. The kids meals were supposed to come with ice cream, no mention of that all by the waitress. Luckily we hadn't told the kids, we didn't even want to know how long that would take to be delivered. We decided to cut our losses and leave without even asking about it. This trip was a very bad way to end a special day. We were very disappointed. read more

We've been coming to Roots for years and it's still consistently good. My kids love the popcorn you get in the beginning while we wait for food. The kids menu is huge...it offers so much. Tables are given complimentary popcorn to tied them over while they wait for burgers. The burgers we had were all well prepared, delicious, and had the unique R branding on the bun that added a little fun without compromising flavor. It was a little noisy and busy. So, I guess this is yet another Carmel restaurant where the food is great, but the service and ambiance are really bad. Food: My Fuego burger was outstanding. These are smash-style burgers, and mine was very delicious. Service: We were greeted (if you can call it that) by a woman who was clearly inconvenienced by our presence. She barely said a word as she grabbed two menus and headed into the seating area. I guess we're supposed to follow her (?). Everyone else got a bucket of popcorn to snack on, but not us. Our server disappeared multiple times, and our drinks ran dry. The restaurant was only 1/3rd full, so it's not like they were busy. Ambiance: it was loud and freezing cold. We turned the heat on when we got back to the car, even though it was 72 degrees outside. The burger market around here is competitive; you have to nail all three aspects, not just the food. My granddaughter and I tried to go Slapfish on Gray Rd at 12:15 on a Friday but there was no place to park so I headed on down to Roots, also on Gray Rd. Plenty of parking here and I got a spot directly in front of the establishment. If management is reading this review, I have a suggestion for you. Add free WiFi for your customers. T-Mobile's network doesn't work in this area even with two bars showing. Despite what their commercials and propaganda say their cell network is inferior. I wanted to write my review, or at least make some notes, but without service, Yelp ceases to function. This is a nice place with a lot of screens tuned to a lot of variety. My granddaughter was even pointing out some interesting stuff to me on the screens behind my back. Seems like a beer drinker's haven with many options. I can't drink alcohol due to medications. She is a chicken person and they had a lot of options for her to order chicken. She played it safe and ordered the Chicken Tender Basket with Fries. She ate half of it which is saying a lot for a preteen being self conscious of her weight. I took the rest home and had it for dinner tonight. I decided to try something new so I went with the Philly Wrap and Tater Tots. I always seem to order the messy to eat stuff. With the melted cheese and a huge pile of beef it was a bit of a challenge but thankfully they provide rolls of paper towels on each table. It tasted very good. The caramelized onions did the trick I'm sure because I couldn't stop eating it when I filled up. The tater tots were the same thing. Cooked so perfectly it was like eating popcorn which by the way they provide a small bucket of as an appetizer. We grabbed carry out from here last week after having a burger craving. The location of Roots is great and has been a long awaited opening. Plenty of parking. It was a quick pick up and it smelled amazing!! We also picked it up around 10 pm and it was still pretty crowded in there. They have a huge menu... so I'm sure absolutely anyone could find something they'd like. We got just the American burger and it was good! Pretty standard and nothing crazy (there's plenty on the menu that have combinations you've probably never heard before). Fries were good, again pretty standard. Overall, we'd stop back in!
