Tomato and cucumbers - full of end stems

Purely a takeout experience as we had two toddlers waiting at home. Unfortunately, it was a really long wait (after placing online order) combined with too many missed items. It was honestly hard to believe they missed seven different items from the original order. Upon return, we almost got the rest while everything prior was cold. My husband said we had already received the Mac and cheese order but the receipt clearly stated two separate items. One was an entree the other was a side order. Clearly QC is not a priority here. Food was decent but pretty sloppily put together. Burgers were dry. Our fries were cold, as to be expected when the wait was forever. Untimely, low stars are from service. And there was nothing outside of an apology to make things right. Since we were still missing a Mac and cheese entree by the time he got back. I had him call the restaurant for a refund on that one item. There are too many burger joints in town to patronize a place that can't prioritize its customers.

This place has been on my list of places to visit for some time now. I love burgers and would normally order a burger on my first visit to a restaurant with "burger" in its name, but I've had a lot of burgers lately, so I opted for the beer battered fish with side salad. Allow me to back up to our arrival. It was a nice day out, a little warm, but the patio is shaded. We asked if we could sit outside, as there were no other guests seated there at the time and the interior seemed rather dark and drab. Shortly after we were seated, my husband went inside to use the facilities and overheard the hostess telling our server that there was a table outside. She responded with a disappointed sounding "OUTSIDE?!" He returned to the table and told me about this as we reviewed the menu and specials while enjoying the little bucket of popcorn that they provide to each table, free of charge. The server, and her trainee, did take a while to come to our table, but she had a great attitude when they did. There was another server with a trainee shadowing him. They are also hiring, for anyone interested. We chose a peach margarita pitcher for $15. It was advertised on the sidewalk chalkboard like a special, but that is the regular menu price. It was the world's tiniest pitcher, but we still didn't finish it, so I guess it was perfectly-sized for the price. We also ordered potato skins as an appetizer. They were a bit stingy with the cheese, but extremely generous with the green onions. They were cooked well. Crispy skin with a fluffy, pillowy, potato inside. My husband, feeling more snacky than actually hungry, ordered two appetizers as his meal. He had the mini corndogs (very crunchy and delicious) and the onion rings. He said that everything hit the spot. The beer-battered fish came with two HUGE filets. They came to the table hot and crisp, but by the time I got them home, the beer-batter had gotten a bit soggy and grease-soaked. The side salad had huge chunks of iceberg lettuce (barely chopped) and some of the pieces were a bit brown around the edges. Sitting on the patio was nice and although there were several bees in the vicinity, the real flowers in the planter boxes surrounding the patio kept them distracted. After we ordered, several more patrons arrived and requested seating outside as well. There was a country playlist going and at least one of the songs had some pretty colorful language. As I heard the "MF" bomb drop for the second time, I looked around at the families with children sitting nearby. They appeared to be unphased. We noticed a dog bowl with "Roots" on it, so I'm guessing that they are pet-friendly. Eventually, I do want to return and try some of their burgers out.

I've been wanting to check out this place for awhile. My friend came for trivia and loved it. I stopped in on a Thursday night. Where I happened to be seated unfortunately had the AC blasting so it was cold. It took awhile for my waitress to come over, but she was training someone. I also never received any popcorn. My waitress was very friendly and knowledge. My food came out fairly quickly and everything was hot. I had asked for a side of mayo so I had to remind them on it. The Rueben was good. Next time I'd love to try a burger. I'll definitely give them another shot since it seems like the training may have disrupted their usual serving flow. So I only removed one star for that.

I love their PB&J burger! I get bunless, but I appreciate the little cups for the peanut butter and jelly! Service is hit or miss sometimes but the burger is great!

It was not the food- it was the Doordash order. We did not get two items from our Doordash order. Otherwise, the food was good. Had a burger, fries and our little one enjoyed the mac n cheese.

underrated burger place in carmel! indoor / outdoor seating options, creative food & drink menu. Can't go wrong with the wise all american original smash burger & the southern pride. good deals throughout the week, fun rotating frozen wine slushees!

I received an email from Roots stating every night specials. Tonight was a $6.00 burger and $4.00 pint When we walked in, we were handed a bucket of popcorn and shown to our table. The popcorn was good. Like fresh popped without too much salt We were greeted within minutes by our server, George. Definitely an asset to the business. Our friend asked if was old enough to work there Without a second thought he explained that he has been working every job in the restaurant since he was 13. In Indiana you can serve food but not adult beverages. He explained that he had washed dishes, cooked, etc. Did anything he was asked to do He was efficient with our order and really added to our dining experience as we enjoyed teasing him and his response. I had to express proudness of him as I had also worked as a young person Our burgers were awesome. Cooked to perfection, bun was grilled to with the roots brand seared on top. Lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles and secret sauce. My husband asked what was in it and George replied that it would not be a secret if he told but he could serve it on the side The draft beer menu was about 20 different types and brand. I asked for a taste and was given a juice glass full. The beer was really cold. They had a list of about 12 different beers on tap. Bar atmosphere, lots of tv's and just a fun place Will we go back, you betcha. Will we ask for George as our waiter you betcha

I was a huge fan of Scotty's Brewhouse (IYKYK), so have been anxiously waiting to try Roots for quite some time. The menu is HUGE. I'm a sucker for pimento cheese so anytime that's available I gravitate towards it. That said, I tried the 'Southern Pride' burger (two patties), which comes with pimento cheese, bacon, secret sauce, tomato jam, and a side of fries. The burger was delicious and the fries were crunchy. Quite messy and greasy, but definitely tasty. Overall, I'd definitely come back!

Was in the area and met up with a friend here. Went into the restaurant and people were friendly but they were a lil awkward since they were looking like this was their first job. The workers at the counter seemed to be high schoolers who would have rather not been working (idk maybe it's just the gen z or younger vibe going on). Whoever took us to our table didn't give us enough menus. Beer list isn't readily available along with which specials which is annoying as a consumer. We ordered the tots and it had a tiny hair in it but we didn't mention anything to the server bc I didn't think it was the end of the world but eh gross. Sydney, our server, was nice. However, we never got any side plates, so we just ate out of the dish.

Roots was an unexpected treat. We got in easily on a busy Friday night. There were six of us including two kids. They have an awesome kids menu. Drinks games out quickly and I had a delicious vodka tonic. The servers are mostly young college students that are attentive. They are unusually well staffed. Our server was very friendly. The menu specializes in a version of smash burgers. There is a good selection of healthy options as well. The food took awhile to come out, but reasonable as they were busy. The kids were able to color with complementary supplies. I had the All American burger with a single patty. The burger had a great smoke flavor with lots of lettuce and sauce. The generous helping of fries was perfectly crispy. This was a delicious meal. My husband had to e tenderloin which he said was perfectly seasoned. The kids ate their grilled cheese and fruit but were most excited about the ice cream dessert that followed. The dining room is decorated with historic and current local photos of Carmel. There is a popular outdoor door patio, but we ate inside. The noise level was pretty loud inside with people excited by the weekend. There was high energy all around. The parking lot was actually tight, but we did find parking. I look forward to returning. Roots is a great family friendly neighborhood pub.

Stopped by for lunch with some pals, and loved this place! The food was fresh, the service was great. The only thing we didn't like was the Thanksgiving Burger & Mac and Cheese- the turkey patty is very gross tasting, and the Mac and cheese is just plain awful. Please consider changing that recipe because it's terrible. Restaurant was clean and had cute decor. Would definitely come back for anything except for the Mac and cheese.

    Garlic Cheeseburger
    Katherine C.

I had high expectations for this place after I heard it was owned by the same guy who owed Scotty's. Unfortunately, it wasn't as exciting as I'd hoped. The place is really cute, menu is great, but the garlic cheeseburger I got was not very exciting. It just didn't have too much to it, especially for a garlic cheeseburger. Service was good, but our waitress forgot things left and right and we had to keep asking for stuff. We had to ask for drink refills, the side of ranch we asked for upon ordering, then a second time since we both asked for it and she only brought mine. Might be back, but wouldn't be my first choice for a burger.

    Dill Chips
    Jan N.

Our visit to Roots this time was less than stellar. First we ordered dill chips, they were stellar. However, the rest wasn't. Steak tacos were on special. We ordered them and discovered the menu neglected to mention they were smothered in blue cheese and horseradish. The waiter neglected to mention it as well. We also ordered a fish sandwich and tots with tartar sauce. Tots tasted of salt and the tartar sauce was mostly mayo. Waiter exchanged the tacos for a jalapeño burger, which wasn't all that great. Normally the food and service has been top notch. This time it was lacking. I doubt we'll return.

We usually prefer to eat in the bar to avoid some of the crowds that fill the regular dining room areas, to check out any of the sporting scene that might be on one of their TVs, and the service typically seems pretty prompt. Today we shared the Bru Fries (regularly $9), Soft Pretzels (regularly $12), and the Triple Dip (regularly $15). If you like your fries with a dark natural cut and a mix of crunchy and soft, these nail it. They come with House Ketchup (REALLY sweet), Black Pepper Mayo, House Chipotle BBQ Sauce and are a pretty decent value at half price. The pretzels are OK. I'm not convinced they are made in-house, but they're fine. They come as an order of 3 plump sticks with a beer cheese, which seems more like a basic nacho cheese, and a spicy mustard that is pretty good if you like mustard with just a little something extra. Not sure they're a must order for future visits, but they're not a horrible deal at $6. Might ask for the mustard with other menu items. The Triple Dip has long been our go-to, although they substituted our favorite option of the dips for a lesser option. It used to come with a goat cheese, which was awesome, but it has been replaced by a pimento cheese dip that is OK. It still includes solid dip options of hummus and guacamole with grilled naan bread and onion straws. I would trade the pimento cheese and onion straws to get the goat cheese back. Overall, still enjoy the environment, service and food and find the happy hour offerings to be a very good value. Just wish they would bring the goat cheese back and improve the flavor of their beer cheese option.

The guy, "H," apologized and said, "Oh, my bad--it's all good." We figured, no big deal, let's move on. We ordered pretty simple food, apps and were then going to put in some entrees once apps arrived. We asked for waters and a water bowl for our pups. He brought two waters--with no straws--and no dog bowl. We assumed he was going to grab the bowl, so we waited... and waited. Then I noticed him at the end of the bar leaning against some boxes, texting. So I finally got up, interrupted him and asked for the dog bowl. His response, "oh my bad." Our appetizers came out, and naturally, we asked for silverware. A few minutes later, I spotted "H" in the corner on his phone again. At that point I was thinking, seriously?! So I got up again, interrupted "H's" text convo and asked for silverware. His response again was, "Oh, my bad." I didn't respond to him I just turned around and went back to my seat. Honestly, the whole experience started feeling more like a self-serve restaurant than table service. It's a chill spot and we weren't being needy whatsoever. We never asked for any refills- we were merely asking for the basics. We wanted to order more food, but by that point we were pretty turned off and decided to just get the check. Then came the final straw: my guy had his license and credit card sitting on the table because he hadn't brought his wallet out for our monon trek. When "H" came back with the checkout thing, without question or hesitation - he grabbed the card and swiped it. We didn't even realize what happened until afterward. Maybe that's standard there, but I've never had a server just take my card without asking. Usually you get a "hey do we want to use this card? Or something to confirm. And of course the tip structure is skewed so the min is 20% unless you want to try to figure out to manually enter in 15% (which most ppl don't -incl my guy), so we left 20% and left irritated and still hungry. "H" didn't seem hungover or anything--he just genuinely seemed like he did not not give a shiiiit. We had to get up three separate times to get things we had already requested: the dog bowl, a couple straws, and silverware. (Basics) And a quick note on the 7-Layer Hoss Dip: don't expect seven layers. It comes in a small thick ceramic bowl and was basically beans, guacamole, a tiny bit of corn and some hard cheese on top. Definitely would not recommend it. Way too "beany" and not worth $16 at all. The southwest rolls were decent- very fried tho. Cheesecake Factory's are better ;) The location and dog-friendly atmosphere are great, with the exception of the homeless camp right at their patio entrance, but unfortunately, the service really took away from the experience. Hopefully this was just an off night, because Big Lug has a lot going for it.

You order at a counter and they call your name for pick up. They have a small seating area. There are four 4 top tables. There is one 6 top table. The tenderloin sandwich was large. You can get a large sandwich for $10.95 or an extra large for $13.95. They have over 20 different condiments to add to your sandwich. For sides, they have french fries, onion rings, mac & cheese, baked beans, and chips. They are priced separately. They serve Coke products, which we really like! Our tenderloin sandwich was served hot and fresh. We got it with lettuce, tomato, pickle, and onions. They have a variety of sauces you can add as well. Since the seating area is small, my wife snagged us a table while I went to the counter to order. This was probably our mistake. Our order was priced incorrectly in that we only got the tenderloin Tuesday discount on one of the tenderloin sandwiches. We probably both should have gone to the counter and ordered separately. We got sauces on the side and my wife got the ranch and I got the fiery ranch. However, when we picked up our bag at the counter, my sauce was not included, although it was on the printout of our ticket. So, technically you could say both our order and our bill were incorrect Although the bill, you could say, was also our fault since we did not order separately. That being said, we have gone to other establishments on Tenderloin Tuesday and had one bill and we both received the discount. The tenderloin sandwich was OK and fairly priced given market conditions. Would we return? If we were on the far east side of Carmel, we would stop in again. However, we would not drive all the way here from the far west side of Carmel just for the tenderloin sandwich. If you are near their location, stop by and give them a try. They were definitely busy and the staff was friendly.

It's a casual dining room offering a comfortable place to eat your meal. I got the large breaded tenderloin with lettuce, tomato, pickle and onion with mayo on the side. My friend got the extra large - better be hungry to finish that off. The sandwich was crispy on the outside and tender/juicy on the inside. The tot rings were awesome. The loinz and rings were not greasy. Overall a very tasty offering. We will return.
