    World's smallest pitcher
    Kandice T.

This place has been on my list of places to visit for some time now. I love burgers and would normally order a burger on my first visit to a restaurant with "burger" in its name, but I've had a lot of burgers lately, so I opted for the beer battered fish with side salad. Allow me to back up to our arrival. It was a nice day out, a little warm, but the patio is shaded. We asked if we could sit outside, as there were no other guests seated there at the time and the interior seemed rather dark and drab. Shortly after we were seated, my husband went inside to use the facilities and overheard the hostess telling our server that there was a table outside. She responded with a disappointed sounding "OUTSIDE?!" He returned to the table and told me about this as we reviewed the menu and specials while enjoying the little bucket of popcorn that they provide to each table, free of charge. The server, and her trainee, did take a while to come to our table, but she had a great attitude when they did. There was another server with a trainee shadowing him. They are also hiring, for anyone interested. We chose a peach margarita pitcher for $15. It was advertised on the sidewalk chalkboard like a special, but that is the regular menu price. It was the world's tiniest pitcher, but we still didn't finish it, so I guess it was perfectly-sized for the price. We also ordered potato skins as an appetizer. They were a bit stingy with the cheese, but extremely generous with the green onions. They were cooked well. Crispy skin with a fluffy, pillowy, potato inside. My husband, feeling more snacky than actually hungry, ordered two appetizers as his meal. He had the mini corndogs (very crunchy and delicious) and the onion rings. He said that everything hit the spot. The beer-battered fish came with two HUGE filets. They came to the table hot and crisp, but by the time I got them home, the beer-batter had gotten a bit soggy and grease-soaked. The side salad had huge chunks of iceberg lettuce (barely chopped) and some of the pieces were a bit brown around the edges. Sitting on the patio was nice and although there were several bees in the vicinity, the real flowers in the planter boxes surrounding the patio kept them distracted. After we ordered, several more patrons arrived and requested seating outside as well. There was a country playlist going and at least one of the songs had some pretty colorful language. As I heard the "MF" bomb drop for the second time, I looked around at the families with children sitting nearby. They appeared to be unphased. We noticed a dog bowl with "Roots" on it, so I'm guessing that they are pet-friendly. Eventually, I do want to return and try some of their burgers out.

I've been wanting to check out this place for awhile. My friend came for trivia and loved it. I stopped in on a Thursday night. Where I happened to be seated unfortunately had the AC blasting so it was cold. It took awhile for my waitress to come over, but she was training someone. I also never received any popcorn. My waitress was very friendly and knowledge. My food came out fairly quickly and everything was hot. I had asked for a side of mayo so I had to remind them on it. The Rueben was good. Next time I'd love to try a burger. I'll definitely give them another shot since it seems like the training may have disrupted their usual serving flow. So I only removed one star for that.

I love their PB&J burger! I get bunless, but I appreciate the little cups for the peanut butter and jelly! Service is hit or miss sometimes but the burger is great!

It was not the food- it was the Doordash order. We did not get two items from our Doordash order. Otherwise, the food was good. Had a burger, fries and our little one enjoyed the mac n cheese.

underrated burger place in carmel! indoor / outdoor seating options, creative food & drink menu. Can't go wrong with the wise all american original smash burger & the southern pride. good deals throughout the week, fun rotating frozen wine slushees!

I received an email from Roots stating every night specials. Tonight was a $6.00 burger and $4.00 pint When we walked in, we were handed a bucket of popcorn and shown to our table. The popcorn was good. Like fresh popped without too much salt We were greeted within minutes by our server, George. Definitely an asset to the business. Our friend asked if was old enough to work there Without a second thought he explained that he has been working every job in the restaurant since he was 13. In Indiana you can serve food but not adult beverages. He explained that he had washed dishes, cooked, etc. Did anything he was asked to do He was efficient with our order and really added to our dining experience as we enjoyed teasing him and his response. I had to express proudness of him as I had also worked as a young person Our burgers were awesome. Cooked to perfection, bun was grilled to with the roots brand seared on top. Lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles and secret sauce. My husband asked what was in it and George replied that it would not be a secret if he told but he could serve it on the side The draft beer menu was about 20 different types and brand. I asked for a taste and was given a juice glass full. The beer was really cold. They had a list of about 12 different beers on tap. Bar atmosphere, lots of tv's and just a fun place Will we go back, you betcha. Will we ask for George as our waiter you betcha

I was a huge fan of Scotty's Brewhouse (IYKYK), so have been anxiously waiting to try Roots for quite some time. The menu is HUGE. I'm a sucker for pimento cheese so anytime that's available I gravitate towards it. That said, I tried the 'Southern Pride' burger (two patties), which comes with pimento cheese, bacon, secret sauce, tomato jam, and a side of fries. The burger was delicious and the fries were crunchy. Quite messy and greasy, but definitely tasty. Overall, I'd definitely come back!

Was in the area and met up with a friend here. Went into the restaurant and people were friendly but they were a lil awkward since they were looking like this was their first job. The workers at the counter seemed to be high schoolers who would have rather not been working (idk maybe it's just the gen z or younger vibe going on). Whoever took us to our table didn't give us enough menus. Beer list isn't readily available along with which specials which is annoying as a consumer. We ordered the tots and it had a tiny hair in it but we didn't mention anything to the server bc I didn't think it was the end of the world but eh gross. Sydney, our server, was nice. However, we never got any side plates, so we just ate out of the dish.

Roots was an unexpected treat. We got in easily on a busy Friday night. There were six of us including two kids. They have an awesome kids menu. Drinks games out quickly and I had a delicious vodka tonic. The servers are mostly young college students that are attentive. They are unusually well staffed. Our server was very friendly. The menu specializes in a version of smash burgers. There is a good selection of healthy options as well. The food took awhile to come out, but reasonable as they were busy. The kids were able to color with complementary supplies. I had the All American burger with a single patty. The burger had a great smoke flavor with lots of lettuce and sauce. The generous helping of fries was perfectly crispy. This was a delicious meal. My husband had to e tenderloin which he said was perfectly seasoned. The kids ate their grilled cheese and fruit but were most excited about the ice cream dessert that followed. The dining room is decorated with historic and current local photos of Carmel. There is a popular outdoor door patio, but we ate inside. The noise level was pretty loud inside with people excited by the weekend. There was high energy all around. The parking lot was actually tight, but we did find parking. I look forward to returning. Roots is a great family friendly neighborhood pub.

Stopped by for lunch with some pals, and loved this place! The food was fresh, the service was great. The only thing we didn't like was the Thanksgiving Burger & Mac and Cheese- the turkey patty is very gross tasting, and the Mac and cheese is just plain awful. Please consider changing that recipe because it's terrible. Restaurant was clean and had cute decor. Would definitely come back for anything except for the Mac and cheese.

    Dill Chips
    Jan N.

Our visit to Roots this time was less than stellar. First we ordered dill chips, they were stellar. However, the rest wasn't. Steak tacos were on special. We ordered them and discovered the menu neglected to mention they were smothered in blue cheese and horseradish. The waiter neglected to mention it as well. We also ordered a fish sandwich and tots with tartar sauce. Tots tasted of salt and the tartar sauce was mostly mayo. Waiter exchanged the tacos for a jalapeño burger, which wasn't all that great. Normally the food and service has been top notch. This time it was lacking. I doubt we'll return.

    Garlic Cheeseburger
    Katherine C.

I had high expectations for this place after I heard it was owned by the same guy who owed Scotty's. Unfortunately, it wasn't as exciting as I'd hoped. The place is really cute, menu is great, but the garlic cheeseburger I got was not very exciting. It just didn't have too much to it, especially for a garlic cheeseburger. Service was good, but our waitress forgot things left and right and we had to keep asking for stuff. We had to ask for drink refills, the side of ranch we asked for upon ordering, then a second time since we both asked for it and she only brought mine. Might be back, but wouldn't be my first choice for a burger.

    Burger with seasoned fries
    Jamie D.

Still looking for the first experience we had here and it's still lacking. We chose to sit at the bar today. We watched the bartender leave popcorn pails out that past customers had eaten out and I felt bad because the new people just shoved their hands in. We both got the burger special, 1 with seasoned fries and 1 with onion rings. The onion rings were horrible, I don't know if the oil is bad but they had a burnt flavor and I couldn't eat them. My husband said to send them back but I was done by then. The burgers were good which is what saved the night for us.

But since I mentioned the service, I'll go ahead and just say that Freeland's has some of the best service I've experienced in Indiana. I felt like I was in the middle of a carefully orchestrated play, with people coming in and out to give me new silverware, refresh my water glass before I knew I needed more water, and whisk my empty plates away as soon as I was done with them. At one point, I was transfixed by watching the staff maneuver and dance around each other in the dining room with purpose and grace. It was a sight to behold. I love efficiency! I love moving with purpose! They do that here, all for you. One hundred percent, you should order the carrot appetizer. It's just called "Carrots" on the menu, which is an understatement. These are perfectly cooked warm carrots glazed in a Szechuan sauce, sitting on top of a creamy edamame hummus, drizzled with oil and sprinkled with everything-bagel spice. One order is plenty for two or three people to share, but I could see myself coming back and just hoarding an entire carrots plate all to myself, with a glass of wine, at the bar. For the main dishes, the Sakura Farm Pork Belly was ordered (kimchi, black forbidden rice, duck egg), which was so juicy and tender. I got the Loch D' Art Salmon, which is cooked medium, unless you tell them otherwise (but medium is perfect, so don't tell them otherwise), and comes with Carolina gold grits, broccolini, tomatoes, romesco sauce and harissa. Holy mackerel (I mean, salmon)! This was a perfect fish dish, and melted in my mouth. Every bite was amazing. It was just the right amount on the plate, too -- not too much, but also completely satisfying. They have some creative desserts on the menu. I didn't really want dessert, but we were given a dessert on the house, so how could I say no? The cherry sorbet was pure, icy cherries in a glass. So refreshing, and the perfect way to end the exquisite meal. Freeland's dining room is small, and when we visited, every table was full. Like I said, definitely make a reservation. But despite all of the people, and all of the people talking, it was never too loud. They have sound-diffusing panels in the ceiling to offset some of the noise, so I never felt like I had to shout across the table. They think about every detail here! This is one example of the care Freeland's puts into their dining experience, and it's not the only one. You are well-taken-care-of here.

The inside was actually bigger than I was expecting. There was a beautiful bar located on one side of the house. Overall, decor was elegant but not pretentious. You could come in casual attire and not feel out of place. Our waiter was very personable and had a great sense of humor. He took time to explain the menu and was extremely helpful when it came to helping us decide on what to get. Everything sounded fantastic especially the starters. I didn't get a cocktail but I did get a lovely cup of hot peach tea that was very delightful. My friend's cocktail was beautiful. We did get a sample of one of the sparkling wines which was very nice. Mt friends ordered several items and I tried most of them. The carrots were my favorite. I ordered the tots and caviar as my main meal. This is definitely the upscale, adult version of tots. The potatoes were very crispy and I was shocked by the amount of caviar for the price. All the food was beautifully presented. And everything came out hot. Meaning temperature hot. You could tell everything was cooked fresh. Overall, it was a great culinary experience. But the great service is what would keep me coming back.

So much, I have a hard time ordering anything else. The server we had was all smiles and fun. It made the burger taste even better. :). We usually prefer to eat in the bar to avoid some of the crowds that fill the regular dining room areas, to check out any of the sporting scene that might be on one of their TVs, and the service typically seems pretty prompt. Mark S was very efficient for us today. Appreciate their happy hour offerings [Monday-Thursday 3:00-5:30] of half off appetizers and $3 off various beverages. Today we shared the Bru Fries (regularly $9), Soft Pretzels (regularly $12), and the Triple Dip (regularly $15). If you like your fries with a dark natural cut and a mix of crunchy and soft, these nail it. They come with House Ketchup (REALLY sweet), Black Pepper Mayo, House Chipotle BBQ Sauce and are a pretty decent value at half price. The pretzels are OK. I'm not convinced they are made in-house, but they're fine. They come as an order of 3 plump sticks with a beer cheese, which seems more like a basic nacho cheese, and a spicy mustard that is pretty good if you like mustard with just a little something extra. Not sure they're a must order for future visits, but they're not a horrible deal at $6. Might ask for the mustard with other menu items. The Triple Dip has long been our go-to, although they substituted our favorite option of the dips for a lesser option. It used to come with a goat cheese, which was awesome, but it has been replaced by a pimento cheese dip that is OK. It still includes solid dip options of hummus and guacamole with grilled naan bread and onion straws. I would trade the pimento cheese and onion straws to get the goat cheese back. Overall, still enjoy the environment, service and food and find the happy hour offerings to be a very good value. Just wish they would bring the goat cheese back and improve the flavor of their beer cheese option.
