Had a noon appointment but my even though salon was empty my stylist arrive almost 15 min late while I sat there waiting. Wanted to chop off my hair and was happy with the final result. The deva cut experience missed the mark. I came in with a wash n go, asked for a deva cut trim and was offered to have my hair cut while "lengthened". I was never told nor would've guessed that it meant washing, drying, and cutting after completely combing out my curls with no product on it, especially in the context of asking specifically for a deva cut. After expressing my surprise at having a deva cut without my natural curls intact, product was combed in, but the cut was done wet and not sectioned out curl by curl. Originally, I asked for a trim to get rid of the bad ends more than a full cut or shape with growing it out as the priority, but the focus ended up being more on shaping, even though it was wet. Now that it's dry and redone in my normal wash n go, there's still bad ends, and the shape is uneven in places where it hadn't been before. Now that it has been a month since my appointment, it doesn't seem like my hair is bouncing back from the damage that I can only assume was from blow drying my hair without any product on it. If there had been more clarity around Ashanti's deva cut services beforehand, I would have opted for a different salon. read more

I started going to Teresa about a year ago for haircuts and coloring services, and I have never been happier with my hair. She is truly an artist and a wonderful person on top of that! She has added dimension and life to my hair and has helped me build a healthy routine of styling and caring for my hair. The service is pretty good! I dint have to wait long to get into the seat; they offered tea/coffee/water as well. They use Aveda products which are organic and smell really good. My stylist was Morgan. She gave me the best head massage coupled with the hair wash for a good 10-12 mins! That was the highlight for me! She listened to what I wanted before going in for the cut. Blow dried them straight, nothing fancy. I was reasonably happy with the cut, it was the perfect length, even on both sides (believe me, I've come out of haircuts with uneven hair, nightmare!) my only complaint being that she was conservative with the layering and side fringe. Everything looks great when they style the hair and show the cut in the back mirror! But after the first home wash, I noticed that there were hardly any visible layers and no side fringe either! Maybe that's why my rating is between 3.5-4. They try to sell the Aveda products but are not overly persuasive, which I liked. It's a little bit on the pricey end, although I guess that does depend on which stylist you go to! Overall I'd say worth giving it a try! read more

It's all about Cicily Cicily Cicily! I have never had such perfect eyebrows before I went to her. She is an esthetician extraodinaire! I have not had my eyebrows waxed since 12/09. Seriously. I'm one of those people that thinks I can keep it under control. Then I looked in the mirror, and I was horrified! 13 months of no wax, what was I thinking? My (former...boo-hoo) stylist is Bria, and let me tell you something: you're not just paying for hair, people. You're paying to have interesting, fun, playful conversation with someone who doesn't do small talk. Talk to her about anything, I dare you. She won't bat an eye and will crack a joke, pass a tissue, or give you some advice packed with moxie. Then you'll walk out of there and you'll notice your hair, which looks faboo, and you'll be all like: wait, that's right, I wasn't just hanging out with a friend for the last hour. Man, I'm disappointed to see one star reviews. HOWEVER -- my experience was awesome. This is my second haircut at this place. The first was in May (3 months ago) Today I called at 12:15pm and asked if they still have their lunch discount deal. Then I asked if they had any spots open right then. Then I hung up and walked out the door to get to Roots. Walked in, Edwin greeted me by name, got me to the same stylist as last time (Brittney). She asked me how the last haircut worked out and if I wanted to do anything different. I said no. She cut I hair. I look great! Here's the thing, I didn't tell them who I was when I called. They keep good records on their customers and execute beautifully. To speak about Brittney for a moment. I went in and was randomly placed with her for my first time. Turns out my wife went to her as well by convenience. I gave simple instructions of I want something that looks stylist but simple to maintain. She went to work and I walked out looking great!. Even this last time where she mimic the success she had with a few update tweaks. Honestly I am pretty picky about my hair stylist. I used to have a guy up at Basic Salon in Lakeview and mourned when we left the area as a hour trek to get my hair cut is too much. After several tries at other places around Chicago (State Street Barber, Snap, etc) she is my person now! Great service, nice people and good hair. What more can you ask for? My reason for 5 stars: Kelli! She executes my very specific requests perfectly and because of that my hair is radder than it's been in years. I get compliments on it everywhere I go. I mean, total strangers will just stick their hands in my hair and ooh and ahh over how nicely textured it is. It's really creepy and probably not hygenic, but it just goes to show the extent of her skill. I wouldn't've trusted anyone else to shave the side of my head when I finally decided to take that plunge! So if you like very modern, edgy, unusual styles, go to her. Brigitte did such a great job taking me back to my natural color after a brief, poorly considered and ill advised attempt to be a redhead. I totally trusted her from the very first moment I sat down in the chair, and enjoyed talking with her during the lengthy process of coloring my longgggg hair. She suggested going darker at first to allow the color to fade naturally, and it worked like a charm! Plus I majorly enjoyed my life as a raven-haired badass for a couple weeks. I got an amazing facial at Roots a few weeks ago. Cicily, go see Cicly, she is the bomb! So friendly, funny, and most importantly knows her skin (which you can tell by looking at hers, it's like porcelain!) I got the Elemental facial, which is customized to your skin and focuses on a healthy balance. Loved it, Aveda products smell SO good. Although it felt like more than a facial, It started out with a warm foot bath which felt so good after walking about a mile in the cold, AND got little massages throughout the facial. How good is a hand massage ?!?! She didn't push any products, and educated me on inexpensive habits that would help my dry sensitive skin. *Alan* He gave me a crazy awesome shampoo massage that was totally awesome and lasted forever. My hair wasn't in the shape of a trapezoid when I was done. Sold. I'm also super psyched that they have *twice* been able to fit me in 20 minutes after I called. Also, the first time I used a coupon, which made it much more affordable than other salons in the area, and even sans-coupon I think it was worth it for a big city haircut. I stumbled upon this salon two years ago when I first moved to Chicago, and I will never go anywhere else! My stylist (Brittany!) has never led me astray. She always knows exactly what I want, even when I am not sure myself, and I am definitely booking her to do my hair and makeup for my upcoming wedding! The entire staff is always friendly and welcoming, and the cheese and wine tasting they had a few weeks ago for all their clients was so much fun! My 1st poor review ever. Wish it was for a restaurant, which would mean just a not-that-great outing. Alas, it's for a hair salon, which means I look like a freak. I was excited about the Roots salon's great reviews, and relied fully on stylist. She showed me some pictures, and we agreed on cold highlights. After we were done, I did notice my hair color looked odd, but thought I'd just need to get used to it. Came home. Didn't get used to it. I tried. My hair looked like a wig: single-process yellow color that didn't match my skin tone AT ALL, making each freckle and pimple more noticeable. Freaked my friend out. After that, immediately bought a temporary color hair spray to make it bearable. Waited until the 1st wash, thought it'd get better. It did not. I had to buy a toner and tone that ridiculousness at home. Yes, tone and deal with the mess it causes after paying $200 for hair. The haircut was good. It looks like my stylist is experienced and has had plenty of happy clients, but I've gotten very unfortunate, I guess, and can't base my review on any experience other than mine. read more

Surprise massages 3 paces away from my doorstep? I'm not lying. I live above Roots, so I can't help but enjoy its convenience. Once, my boyfriend said, "don't plan anything for 11.30am" so - at 11.30 am we left the house, and I had no idea where we were going... we walked three paces, carved our names into wet cement, then arrived at Roots, where he had booked a 1 hour massage for me. It was FANTASTIC. Erica was my masseuse, and she was very sweet though my back wanted her to be a bit more firm. (not so keen on this fairy fingers Swedish massage business.) During the massage, the CD player (playing silly new age relax-athon wave stuff) broke, which didn't bother me, but Erica was worried that it had ruined the massage. So she's offering me half price off the next massage. Nice. I love Roots. I've also had a haircut and a free bangs trim here, and found everyone to be friendly, laid back and professional. read more

She was funny and nice (not to mention very cute). She knew what would look good and took care of me. One time I went in for headshot preparation and she gave me a small waxing on my brow. I never even knew I needed it. Granted, I haven't dealt with the front desk that much because I usually squeeze in when is good for Jackie. If you're in need of a new stylist or simply are not happy with the one you have you need to pick up the phone and make an appointment here with Erin! I am probably a stylist's worst nightmare. I expect great service yet I always go in undecided of what I want. Usually, I end up leaving not impressed by either the service or the atmosphere. At Root's I was over whelmed by the atmosphere. The staff is wonderful, the decor is top notch, and my hair came out great! Erin was able to recommend and follow through with a great cut that was both trendy enough for my friends and yet still appropriate enough for work. And did I mention the color is superb? read more

Ryan Babbitt rocks my socks off. I have somewhere in between wavy and curly hair, and for so long I settled for a very basic slightly layered cut that would lay right and look good about 1/2 the time. Considering I wear my hair EVERY SINGLE DAY I don't think 1/2 the time is good enough. Enter my curly-haired friends Marjorie and Cassy who were both sporting new cuts that accented their curls, their pretty faces, and were fun, bouncy and bright. I got Ryan's name and booked for the next week. I'm seriously never looking back. In addition to being a completely accredited hair stylist Ryan has a BFA in visual arts (sculpture, if I'm not mistaken?) and it really shows in how he cuts. He thinks in 3D, he thinks about the whole picture, and he really listens to you. He doesn't force you to buy any product but is happy to explain the pros and cons of what they sell and make recommendations if you ask. I love him. **roots in general is awesome. The folks are friendly, comfy waiting area stocked with new magazines and trail mix, and they stock Aveda products - hello Rosemary Mint lotion. I have been seeing Jackie for a few years now and she is amazing! I have followed her to a few salons and will go anywhere in the city she goes, that's how good she is. Jackie takes the time to really listen to what you want and talk it through before diving into the cut/color. She's got some serious talent! It is clear by her techniques that she really cares about her craft and making sure you get exactly what you want. A few other pros....she is FUNNY! And serves wine/beer. Go see her asap! I live in the area and decided to give it a shot...it's an Aveda salon and I'm an aveda junky so it fit. Prices are reasonable, I don't have to call months in advance for an appoinment, the place is decorated tastefully, and overall I just really like it. I saw a coupon, and it was down the street from where I lived so I figured why not give it a try. I think as much as I want to say it's only hair - there is will always be some sort of attachment to it. The receptionist answering the phone and maybe is the same at the desk is really nice and friendly. She had let me know that there were a couple of stylists available on the day that I wanted to cut my hair, and I ended up choosing Rachel based on time and that it was also my sister's name. I understand that she was a newer stylist, but was willing to give her a chance. I showed her a picture of what look I wanted but said that I was also open to something new or different as well, and at the end I think I just didn't like it. She also suggested curling it and almost finished before she asked what I thought and I think I ended up disliking it more because I felt like it just made my face look wider and I really wanted the opposite of that. She did end up straightening it back and then cutting it a little shorter as I was looking for something more bolder. We did cut off a lot of hair at least 6 inches and only 1 person at work noticed that I got a hair cut. For me, I feel like I'd rather cut my own hair where no one notices it just the same and not have to pay a lot and takes me like 15 minutes. I mean I do feel like I could have gone to like a chain hair cut place and gotten the same result. It was pretty disappointing, and not the way I wanted to start my Chinese New Year hair cut for the year. I guess I'll have to wait until it grows out a little more to get it re-cut and styled or else try again some place else next year. read more
