Place is cute, service is well done, super nice people there. However as a born and raised Brazilian, let me tell you all: the food is not authentic. I ordered feijoada and here the issues: The amount of "feijoada" on my plate was 20% the rest was the rest, while should be opposite. But worse part: it was made by a mix of black beans and pinto beans. You would NEVER see a feijoada in Brazil with pinto beans, never, only black beans. Super spicy, feijoada is never spicy in Brasil neither. I could not finish the plate. Would not order it again. read more

I grew up in South Dakota and was back for a visit in July. My sister and l ate lunch at Roots of Brasil, and it instantly became one of my favorite restaurants! I had the risotto and she had the grits-both were absolutely delicious. The menu is full of unique and tempting options, and the portions are generous-- definitely enough for two meals. We went at an off time and were seated right away. The atmosphere and decor are beautiful, and the waitstaff was friendly and very knowledgeable about the menu. I live in Portland, Oregon (a serious foodie city!), and there are only two Brazilian spots there-an all-you-can-eat rotisserie place and a food cart. I wish we had a restaurant like Roots of Brasil in Portland! I love discovering unique restaurants when I travel, and this one truly stood out. I can't wait to come back on my next visit! read more

Before I rate the food or even the atmosphere I have to give credit to the staff because the staff were some of the coolest, nicest, and chill people that have ever served me! I was so impressed with how nice they were and they all had smiles throughout the whole night. The building is small but they decorated it in a way that is so fun to look at which made it feel comfortable and relaxing. I loved the decorations because it felt like we were on some tropical island! The food is something else. I went out with a group so we ordered a little bit of everything and let me tell you EVERYTHING we got was delicious! Jerk chicken, steak, pizza, salmon & risotto, beans, rice, pineapple, and even collard greens! Out of everything I would say the Caribbean jerk chicken is a must try if you are coming to Roots of Brasil! Some of the most flavorful chicken I ever had. Overall this was one of the coolest and delicious experiences I had in Sioux Falls so I rate this an overall of 4.7! read more

Well. I for one did not expect to find great Brazilian food in the Dakotas but-that's what I got. The place is quaint, small and delightfully decorated. The area it's in is just sketch enough to detract the wrong kind of tourist. The waitstaff both nights (yes-in a row-that good) were awesome. But again. The food. First night I passed on appetizers and went with the recommended jerk chicken. And wow. Just superb a solid, delicious seasoning that was spiced just right! The greens and rice sides were stunningly good. The second night I had the curried chucked and while I wished I had reordered the same from the night before it was good but was immediately outshone by the amazing mussels appetizer. Half priced sangria the first night sure didn't hurt. It was so worth it. Make the trip! read more

I read good things about this restaurant and so put it on the list to try, while in town. It was a bit hot in the restaurant, but we were on the second floor and they have a pizza oven right in front so it was understandable. The items that stood out the most to us were the appetizer and dessert. The homemade dough balls with cheese were so tasty. They were great consistency and texture. The dessert was homemade cheesecake. It was so good that we shared a piece in the restaurant and got another to go. While in Sioux Falls for a brief weekend, we discovered that Roots of Brasil was a few blocks from our hotel. Having lived in Brasil for more than a year, it was a great pleasure to discover this place in South Dakota for dinner. There is reasonable parking near by and has an upstairs and ground floor dining areas. Staff was friendly and efficient. The menu contained many traditional Brazilian dishes like moqueca (sort of a fish stew), bacalhau (cod fish), and of course feijoada. They have one option for a churrasco (Brazilian barbecue) but this is offered for 2 or 4 people. They also have some interesting twists on Brazilian dishes closer to more American/Mexican than Brazilian (or so I remember). The dishes and flavors took me back to Brazil and were very yummy. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars was that they could only offer beer and wine as they had lost their liquor license. Not really a problem but there were numerous cocktails I would have loved to sample. Great place. read more

Festive Christmas music with a Brazilian twist since it is around the holidays. The hostess and waitress were extremely friendly and energetic. A group of parents with a couple kiddos sat next to us and the parents left this horrible mess for the poor staff to clean beside us but they didn't even complain. The jerk chicken has a great smoky flavor that is very savory. Extremely disappointed about the risotto because they substituted the risotto for regular white rice. I'm unsure if this is a regional thing that's done in Brazil or the chef is just lazy but I would NOT have ordered the dish knowing it was going to just be rice. I normally do not like Brazilian food, but I was pleasantly surprised by this charming restaurant in Sioux Falls. I went with some friends on a busy Friday night, and despite the fact that we were told it would be a 30 minute wait, we were seated in about 10. I liked the menu - it wasn't just your typical meat dishes, but they have some seafood offerings. We started with tasty Brazilian cheese bread, and my partner had seafood curry rice and I had a steak. I tried a bite of my partner's seafood curry, the flavors were perfect - delicious coconut flavor but not overly sweet. My steak was cooked just as I had requested - medium rare, and the side of black beans (which contain sausage and bacon) were delicious. While they do have a meat platter for $100 that serves 4, this is not a typical Brazilian all you can eat meat place so do not expect that when you come here - it's much better. They also have a wide fire oven and make pizzas - we didn't try one, but the table next to ours was having some and they looked good. A must try in Sioux Falls! read more

Had a great lunch there. The Yucca fries Werre quite good (to Americans they are much starchier than potatoes, be prepared) but i loved the sauce and the sausage on them. The pork belly bowl was incredible - they said that it was only on the menu temporally, however, so you might want to ask for this to become a permanent part of the menu. It was really delicious and I was surprised by a slightly Asian flair to it. We also enjoyed the aviator salad, which is charred Romaine and had delicious toppings. Service is great and they were very friendly.the building is cute and they are very smart to use the pizza oven that was left from the previous tenants. read more

Four of us dined here last night for the first time and this is what I have to say. We first ordered drinks followed by Minho Verde Elode. I could have ordered more just for dinner. It was fantastic. 5 stars for sure along with our waitress. For the entrees we had: All 3 stars or less Shrimp Moqueca, only had 3 shrimp, nothing special Risotto with added salmon, again a very small portion of salmon, also nothing great Red Snapper. While the description sounded great, it should NOT have been a whole fish dropped in oil. It was a mess to eat and I could not even even enjoy the lemon and caper sauce. We went to The Roots of Brazil for the first time. Everything was wonderful. The service was fantastic. We asked for recommendations and our waitress was very helpful. I don't recall the name of the dish we shared but it was a traditional Brazen meal with rice and beans served with chicken and beef on the side. It was very good. We also enjoyed the location. Although the restaurant is in a questionable spot on the east side of downtown the inside is unique and added to the experience. Place opened recently and having studied abroad in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil I thought I'd try it out. Started with the elote and it was by far the best part of my meal. Great smokey flavor and the sauce had a hint of spice to it that elevated the flavor profile. Tacos were solid, no complaints there. The pizza was also good - really good white sauce and cheese however could use an additional flavor or texture to break up the bites. I added chicken and that helped but it was still missing something - maybe bacon bits for crispiness or some sort of hot sauce or pepper flakes. Really good but hard to eat more than a few pieces. Hadn't had Guarana since I studied abroad so was nice to have it readily available. Overall, a great meal and something fun to try! read more

First time here, wow! This is a whole EXPERIENCE. Great funky decor with some bossa nova music playing. Tried something of their feature menu, the Coco Malagueta Mariscos. If you want a seafood extravaganza with a unique blend of medium to hot spices in a coconut milk/citrus kissed broth, this is for you. Great service, everyone seemed so proud of what what was happening here, a cook stopped by to ask about the mussels. I am not a big mussels eater but these were so good. The sauce permeated into each bite and there was certainly no lack of the mussels. There was a smaller amount of shrimp, scallops, and calamari as well. It was a very balanced meal but HUGE. I was looking forward to trying the grilled pineapple I saw going by to other tables but I was absolutely stuffed after this. I think this was the first time I have had malagueta peppers as well, it's hard to describe as they had a little heat but then many complex juicy flavors going on. The crispy spiced rice noodles on top were a great crispy start and then they started soaking up the broth and added another interesting layer to the meal. My server suggested an extra side of bread to soak up the amazing broth and I am glad I took her up on that. Best two dollars I have spent in awhile. The stewed tomatoes in here were a real highlight too soaking up all the wonderfulness. I hope this doesn't go away soon as I will be back for it! A++ read more

I've been to this restaurant with my family and had negative experience. We ordered all the courses at once, as usual, and started with pastel and pão de queijo as appetizers. They were good but the main course came to much fast so we did not have time to enjoy them due to the inconvenient hurry coming from the waiters. We also ordered a bottle of white wine, which came totally covered and besides, the waiter returned the top, closing the bottle after serving. We all know that a bottle of wine cannot be closed after opening. Air must come inside so the wine can breath. Another issue was that the dishes don't come properly mounted. Not carefully prepared. Anyway, the idea of bringing Brazilian food to Sioux Falls is certainly meritorious. However, some dishes and even some music were rather Caribbean and do not give the true idea of what we eat in Brazil. I strongly hope they can improve all these aspects. read more
