Cheers to the staff in this restaurant. Every person I walked past, made eye contact, smiled and said hello, welcome, enjoy your meal or something similarly kind. There's a reason this expansive space was full. The food was tasty, cooked properly and high quality. The popovers are a nice touch. For me, 2 small changes would substantially elevate the experience. 1- Soften the butter, so it can be spread on the popover 2- Heat the plates or find some other way to keep the food hot longer. read more

Every single bite of food was delicious! Best filet mignon ever. Cooked perfectly, extremely tender and not a bit of fat. We could not stop telling each other how great it was. I was full after the popover and the crispy shrimp scampi. I would have been happy with just that. However, I did manage to eat my filet and two bites of creamed corn. And I even got through a few bites of my husband's butter cake. We mentioned that my husband had just retired and they wrote congratulations on his dessert plate. A few points that in my view tell the story. Now, let's talk steak. Two cowboys, dry aged vs prime, were cooked perfectly medium rare with a nice crust. The prime version was delicious and tender, a little fatty. The dry aged is top of line Angus, but not prime. Texture was meatier and I prefer the more umami flavor. Your preference. Loaded baked potato and sautéed mushrooms were more than ample sides. The buratta tomato app was quite delicious with what seemed like freshly made cheese. The wagyu dumplings were quite tasty, though a bit dry, and served with two sauces that compliment. We had a fun ice cream dessert with scoops of excellent ice cream inside an ice cream cone shell set inside a giant martini shaped glass bowl and eight(?) toppings on the side in edible cups. First time at Roots steakhouse and went here for my dad's birthday. My parents had Roots steak before in their Morristown location so they knew it was good steak and high prices, but it was well worth it! Upon entering, the hostess greeted us very warmly, we got their 15 minutes early and she offered to seat us right away instead of having us wait until our reservation time. Many waiters greeted us and was so friendly! They gave us a Swiss cheese and chive bread with butter which was different and amazing. We ordered calamari for appetizer which was fresh and delicious! Then for main meal it was steaks all around and I got the pan seared salmon. All of it phenomenal. I'm not a huge steak person but my salmon was incredible. We ended the night with the Roots Butter Cake topped with blueberries and whip cream which was warm and delicious! Wasn't too sweet and rich in flavor. Definitely recommend for a special night out. Approximately 12 hours after me and my son finished eating our Steak Sandwich from our Roots lunch, we both experienced a severe case of Norovirus (stomach flu). Roots was the only public place we ate out or went that week, so it was highly likely the cause. Most likely a kitchen staff or waiter who transmitted the virus. The kids were both off from school that week. We will not be going back anytime soon. It's a shame because we had many good experiences at the restaurant over the years, but this clearly this was the likely cause of our violent stomach illness. As an intermittent faster, this was the only meal I had that day, and my son ate the exact same meal. At 3am (12 hours later) we both woke with the violent illness. My wife and daughter who did NOT eat the steak sandwiches were fine. Clearly, the steak sandwiches were contaminated with the #Norovirus. I guess we will be sticking with the Brickhouse as our primary Bergen County high end steakhouse. Hopefully management will put stricter health code procedures in place to ensure that sick employees or transfer of Norovirus or food contamination will not take place in the future. Update: Apparently someone didn't like this honest review of my personal experience and my son's experience at Roots - I'm sorry but this was my honest experience, in fact I filed a food borne illness report with the Ridgewood Department of Health the Friday after the incident when we stated recovering. Got to try roots steakhouse with a few friends who recommended it. It was a great halfway point for us so I was gung-ho. They were very busy and def at their Covid limit so we had to wait a bit for our reservation to be ready. We sat down and ordered some drinks off their special drink menu snd boy they didn't disappoint. I believe mine was cold the pigs ear, it was delicious. They had the dirtiest martinis and loved them. They gave us their bread which was possibly the best bread at a restaurant that I've ever had! We ordered a crab cake which was really good, not overly filled with filling. My girlfriend had the French onion soup while I had a wedge salad. Both were really delicious. I got the 20oz dry aged cowboy steak, it was cooked perfectly and each bite literally melted. As a side I went with the lobster Mac and cheese and asked them to add shaved truffles. It wasn't the best Mac and cheese I've had but also wasn't the worst. I may pass on it next time. All and all the restaurant was really good. Service was great, only complaint is the food was very spaced out for each course but that gave us more time to hang with friends. As I had been to the restaurant a few years ago and was pleased, I booked a reservation for my anniversary. Prior to going to the restaurant, I checked their online menu. I was so looking forward to ordering the Chilean Sea Bass which was listed on their menu. Once we were seated, I did not even bother to look at the menu since I knew exactly what I wanted. When our server came to take our order, I asked for the Chilean Sea Bass. He advised that it was no longer being served. The remaining choices of fish was limited to only 3 items. I chose the halibut. I ate exactly one bite as the same was completely tasteless. I thought it was completely inedible. Thank goodness I had ordered the lobster bisque and the brussels sprouts as a side. If not, I would have starved. When the server came to take our plates at the end of the meal, he asked me whether I wanted to have the leftovers wrapped up. I told him to just box up the brussels sprouts. He was well aware that the halibut was completely uneaten and to my surprise did not have the courtesy to ask whether I was unsatisfied with my meal and merely took away the plate. I have been to many restaurants when the server notices that most of the meal is still on the plate, they will ask the customer what was wrong. I think this restaurant is completely overrated and overpriced. I will not be going back any time soon. read more

My steak came out PERFECT!!! Been to Ruth's and Capital... I prefer Roots! I am a value guy. 20 bucks for some asparagus is just not what I want to waste my money on. The shaved brussel sprouts and bacon are recommended and were only 10 bucks. I was taken aback when the chef stepped over and asked me how my steak was and I let him know it was PERFECT... Very simple review . The food is okay and accurately reflects it's menu prices . A typical steak at Root's is priced about fourteen dollars less , than its two higher end competitors, Ruth's Chris and Capital Grille. But the latter two clearly have a superior steak , though priced higher . Ruth Chris' Cowboy Ribeye easily blows away both of its competitors, while Capital Grille comes in 2nd. Though Capital Grille wins the top prize for best looking restaurant . Was a little disappointed with the food at Roots , since my last visit . Steak overall quality was about a 7. Kind of dry and bland, even though medium rare . Appetizer was okay , but from looks of it , a bit mushy to the eyes . Steak portion was kind of small and still craved more food . But I guess you get what you pay for . If your looking to save a few bucks on steak than this place is decent . Pretty nice looking on inside as well . One big turnoff was when the half empty "messy" steak sauce bottle was put on the table . Any true restaurant owner or food critique knows that all those bottles must always be served full and perfectly clean . Steaks are really charbroiled on the top . So you either like steak that way or you don't . The only restaurant who comes close to Ruth's Chris steaks is the River Palm Terrace in Edgewater. At the outset, I want to say thank you to the entire staff at roots, especially Valerie. I have a son with special needs, and he loves steak. I chose Roots for my son's Eighth Grade graduation celebration. Other than steak, my son has a very unique palate. I contacted Roots ahead of time, and they went over the top to provide my son all the special treats that he needs. In addition to providing everything special for him, the wait staff treated him like King for a Day. My son was treated with the utmost respect and received the red carpet treatment. I will forever be grateful for everyone there for their attention. As to the food, the food is excellent. This was my second time there and the steaks are incredible. Few steakhouses in New Jersey compare or exceed a good New York steak, well Roots does it with flare. The food is great. You get started with fresh baked bread, the bacon is to die for, and the calamari are so fresh and tasty. I am dying to try the seafood tower (that will be my next trip). As to the steak, I am a huge ribeye fan, and so is my son. The rest of the family likes Filet Mignons (my family is made up of non purists). Give me a cowboy steak anyday of the week. Either way, everything they cook here is fabolous. Would recommend this place for a nice dinner, lunch or a celebration. Omg, top notch service. We were craving some good steak and a friend found this place and suggested we go. Neither of us have been here before and utilizing Fellow yelper's reviews really encouraged our decision. I called around 2 or 3pm and made reservations for 8pm. I was asked if it was my first time dining there and was also informed of the complimentary valet that was available, which was extremely helpful since they're in the heart of Ridgewood. First impression, the valet attendants. They were very nice and friendly and told us to text a phone number when we were leaving the restaurant so they can have the car ready for us. We walked into the restaurant and was greeted with friendly hostesses who didn't look like they hate their jobs. We were walked through the restaurant, which was much bigger than I thought, and led past an open concept kitchen, to a quieter dining area toward the back of the restaurant. As soon as we sat down, we were greeted immediately by someone who provided us menus right away. He explained the menu in full since it was our first time here and left us to decide. Moments later, someone provided us with a complementary bread that was SO good. It was light and airy on the outside and spongy on the inside. Everyone ordered some type of meat since we were at a steakhouse and seeing that they went in to explain the difference between the wet/dry meats, it had to be amazing. I opted for the 16oz of lamb chops and a side of asparagus, creamy string beans, and pomme frites, which was obviously shared. The food was phenomenal. I had my Lamb chops cooked medium which gave it the perfect amount of redness in the middle that I like. The vegetables were delicious, although some may say the asparagus was a bit tasteless, I had no problems with it since I'm used to eating steamed vegetables. The Lamb was so juicy and chewy and tasted perfect with a side of mint jello. I wish I had made room for dessert but the Lamb was too good to NOT finish. During the dinner, we were approached by a few different staff who made sure everything was perfect. A second waiter came and introduced himself as working with our first waiter and he was available if we needed anything. A couple of management came by also and said the same thing, ensuring our dining experience was up to par. Even the valets outside told us to have a good night and to drive safely, rather than giving us the key and walking away. I'm all about service and food and if both were good, I'm definitely coming back. I even received a phone call the morning after the dinner to check on how my experience was dining with them. Unfortunately I couldn't speak to anyone since I was working and I felt leaving a 5 star review and recommending others to go would be a great response. I would recommend making reservations on The Weekends. This is a perfect place for a date or a celebration or even just a nice gathering. The best thing going at Roots is the Bar, Scene and Service - Top Notch. I am always looking for a great red wine by the glass and Roots over delivers every time. In fact, I believe they recently changed the list, and I was concerned for no good reason. I was 100% Satisfied. The Steaks at Roots underperforms and for a steak house I sadly have to say last night my steak was over cooked significantly. The manager came over and said enjoy dinner but didn't ask how my steak was cooked so I never complained. I never want to send food back so that is on me. We ordered a variety of appetizers from the oysters, seared tuna (I think), bacon slab, and another one and everyone was very impressed and enjoyed their app. My friend and I had the 8 oz filet mignon and it was prepared to perfection. Probably the best I've ever had, seriously. My fiancé and his brother ordered the cowboy steak and absolutely loved it. Last evening, St. Patrick's Day, we dined at this steakhouse. This was an important evening for us, celebrating my wife's BD, my BD, and my book publishing. We had never been to Roots before, but we always wanted to try it. It is not often that I write a review that says, a must try, but here it is. Our server, who unfortunately I cannot recall her name, but is a young lady that is becoming a screenwriter, provided us with a very special service. Her table manners and attention were professional, calm, attentive, and caring. It was clear that she wanted us to have a wonderful evening. The food was excellent. My wife had the arugula salad and the 8oz filet mignon with mashed potatoes as a side, and I had the french onion soup, 16 oz prime strip steak with broccoli, and pommes presse, or what they call au gratin on the menu. These were all delicious and the steaks were temped exactly as ordered. The filet was excellent and tender, and the strip steak was very flavorful the way prime should be. The sides were excellent, and the pommes presse especially was creamy and delicious. The wine list has quality offerings, and we had a bottle of the Etude Pinot Noir. We also ordered desserts, cheesecake, and the Roots sundae, something we normally do not have, but this again was a special evening to celebrate. Both were delicious. Being a consultant that travels the country, I do not always enjoy myself out to dinner. I have a bad habit of picking through the failures of a business (although I do pick out what's working too) and sometimes cannot enjoy myself as much as I should, however, I did not have to bother on that evening. There are always items I pick on, it's just the way I am built, so I have to say that this was one of the best evenings in a restaurant we have had in a long time.
