Roots is one of our favorite spots, and we'll definitely be back. From the moment you walk in, the atmosphere is warm and inviting, and the bar is one of the best around. One of my favorite touches is that they re-chill my martini glass halfway through my drink--it's those little details that make the experience feel special. The complimentary popover bread is absolutely to die for and worth the visit all by itself. We also loved the crispy Wagyu dumplings--they were packed with flavor and perfectly cooked. The burger was cooked exactly as ordered, and the Brussels sprouts were outstanding. The only disappointment was my filet mignon, which was unfortunately overcooked. It was the only miss of the evening, but everything else was so enjoyable that it didn't overshadow the overall experience. Great food, excellent service, and a fantastic atmosphere. I had been to the Roots Steakhouse in Morristown and the one in Summit, loving them both, before I had a chance to experience their other location in Ridgewood. We were there on a Friday evening to celebrate a family birthday, and the place was packed! Thankfully, beyond the bar and lounge area in the front, there were several dining areas, which had not been initially visible and could accommodate all of the hungry diners waiting for tables. We were escorted to the bustling, rustic back room and presented with menus and their signature popovers. The large, flakey pastries had been sprinkled with cheese on the top for an added zest. They were as delicious as always. I also started with a Spicy Cherry Margarita, which packed a lot of heat, but the selected fruit flavor did not really mesh well with the spicy or smokey notes the drink exhibited. It was not my favorite marg, but it was not entirely awful. We next moved on to a few starters to share. First, there was the Yellowfin Tuna Tartare, which I had previously adored at the Summit location, but found very bland on that evening. The mashed avocado, crispy wontons, and sesame seeds were all there, but the wasabi cream and ponzu sauce were barely perceptible. The Kobe Sliders were served as a trio and topped with cheddar cheese and caramelized onions. The patties were generous in size for "sliders", and they were served on sweet buns. I found these enjoyable and would get them again, though they would not be a mandatory order. Lastly, there were the Maine Lobster Bites in a lemon garlic beurre blanc with gruyere and bread crumbs. It was certainly a decadent dish and reminded me of a lobster mac and cheese without the noodles. It was richer than I typically enjoy, and the shellfish was on the chewier side, so I was not a huge fan. In terms of the entrees, there was mixed feedback around the table. First there was the lobster tail that was yet again too tough to consume. The scallops received a similar review, though I tried a scoop of the accompanying mushroom risotto, which was actually delicious. Then, there were the steaks that were all incorrectly prepared. For instance, my 8-ounce Petit Filet Mignon had been requested "medium", but arrived medium-well. No one ordered anything below medium, but most of the delivered pieces of meat were served far less cooked than that. Despite my steak being overdone, it was still enjoyable and had the nice crust for which one would hope. In addition, my side of Roasted Wild Mushrooms included an aromatic blend of shiitake, oyster, and white button varieties, all tossed in a hearty herb oil. They were fantastic! In regards to the steaks, we had let the staff know that we had been disappointed, and they graciously presented a few desserts as an apology. The Flourless Chocolate Cake was rich and gooey; it was topped with a caramel sauce and served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The Roots Super Sundae was a massive martini glass stuffed with chocolate and vanilla ice cream, waffle cone pieces, and fresh berries. I only tried the chocolate ice cream and found it delicious. The sundae was served with a slew of toppings like Reese's Cup pieces, M&Ms, Oreo crumbles, sprinkles, and more. It was a fun and decadent treat. However, the Roots Warm Butter Cake was the standout winner for most of us. The fluffy pound-like cake was topped with a blueberry compote, fresh whipped cream, and vanilla ice cream; it was simple, comforting, and just delightful. Overall, we appreciated the service at the Roots Ridgewood location, but found the food and overall experience disappointing, especially after we had adored their other locations. read more

We visited Roots Steakhouse for my father's holiday party/dinner, which had a pre-fixe menu. The space had a formal vibe, with dim lighting and classic decor. Our event was in the back room, where tables were set up along with a seating chart. Service was attentive and professional, but I felt like the food just didn't live up to the "fanciness" of the venue. For my appetizer, I chose the Lobster Bisque, which was pretty good. I liked the creaminess and flavor, but didn't love that it only had a single chunk of lobster. For my entree, I figured the Filet Mignon would be my safest bet at a steakhouse. It wasn't bad but lacked flavor, as it was only seasoned with salt and pepper. My "medium rare" and my partner's "medium" were also cooked exactly the same, which I found odd. My mother's Chicken Parmesan, however, was much better! For dessert, everyone was given the Roots Warm Butter Cake. This one also wasn't up my alley - kind of plain and forgettable. I made a reservation for Sunday lunch. Upon arrival, we were promptly taken to our table. The restaurant had such beautiful interior, integrated with luxurious railway car vibes, and huge bar area in front. All the furnishings, wall arts and decors were so nicely put together. The menu had lots of good appetizers, a raw bar section, salads, steaks, seafood and few entrees. Some of their entrees had unique options of multiple small items together, like Ultimate Roots Trio and the Roots Express lunch. I went with the first one, that came with a slider, small lobster roll and lobster bisque. The slider wasn't too good, had plain bread, patty and some crispy onion. I'd have liked to some sort of sauce in it. But the roll and soup were really good. I also got the lobster bites for appetizers. These were to die for. Soooo creamy and buttery. They put these in a dish with holes. It was such a fantastic dish. The Mac & cheese was also a good dish. We also got a complimentary bread with butter. It was huge and top quality. The service was top notch. Our server was a pro, interacted with us on many different things other than just taking and serving orders. The manager also stopped by our table multiple times, had some wonderful conversations with him. Overall we have a wonderful family lunch here. I'd give Roots Steakhouse in Ridgewood 2 out of 5 stars. The only reason it's getting two stars instead of one is because our main server was friendly and attentive, and the restaurant itself is spacious and nicely decorated. Unfortunately, almost everything else was disappointing, especially since we were celebrating a birthday. We brought in two birthday cakes and were charged $5 per person to have them cut and served. With a party of 10, that's $50 just to slice the cakes. Despite the expensive fee, it took around 20 minutes for the cakes to come back, and they weren't even cut the way we specifically requested. We asked for one of the cakes to be divided into four large pieces for the adults, but instead everyone received tiny slivers. The second cake was also cut into much smaller pieces than we wanted. Paying $50 for slow service and incorrect cake cutting was extremely disappointing. To make matters worse, as we were leaving, our birthday cake was accidentally dropped. Multiple employees walked right past it without offering to help clean it up or asking if we needed assistance. That lack of customer service was honestly the most disappointing part of the entire experience. The food also didn't live up to the price. The steaks were served with no sides at all--just a steak on a plate. For such an expensive restaurant, we expected much more. Even the bread was disappointing, and one staff member clearing the bread was unfriendly and seemed completely uninterested in interacting with guests. Overall, the prices were incredibly high, but the food and service outside of our main server didn't justify the cost. This is not a restaurant I'd choose for another special occasion or birthday celebration. There are many better steakhouses in the area that provide a much better overall experience for the price. read more

Roots has always been one of my favorite steakhouses in Ridgewood, whether it's for an event or just a dinner out. This is one of my more recent trips and second time being disappointed. We were able to walk right in on a Friday night without a reservation which was a huge plus. Service was just okay. Once our orders were placed it seemed as if our server was gone for extensive periods of time. We placed our drinks and appetizers first. The drinks came out rather fast as only an IPA and spicy guava margarita was ordered. The Maine lobster bites were good in flavor however it was missing either a splash of lemon or salt for some flavor as the sauce was pretty bland. Next we had the crispy shrimp scampi with their jumbo shrimp. The batter was undercooked and still doughy and definitely needed to be fried longer. The sauce however was perfect and we ended up using it on the lobster bites for better flavor. The spicy guava margarita was okay and nothing special for a featured cocktail. I ordered a watermelon Aperol spritz next and wow amazing. The watermelon flavor was strong but not overpowering and did not have that gross artificial flavor I was expecting. For dinner we ordered the prime NY strip and a filet mignon. The filet mignon was delicious, well seasoned, and cooked to the perfect medium rare. My filet mignon was okay cooked a bit more then I liked but our server was MIA for about 20-30 minutes after receiving our meals and I was starving so I suffered thru an overcooked dry steak. The potatoes au gratin were lacking flavor and seasoning which seems to be an ongoing trend for their sides. The popovers that came out at the beginning of the meal were good however the butter was rock hard and difficult to spread easily without making a giant mess. There are subtle details from my many years of coming here of their traditions that are fading away. They don't give you their history at the beginning anymore and when you get up from your table they always used to fold the napkin and place it back on your chair. Also the servers most of the time now are not as presentable in appearance and often have food stains on their jackets. This trip reminded me why we stopped coming into roots for dinner. read more

Located in an area with many fine restaurant options, this steakhouse stood tall in service, food quality, and presentation. The French onion soup au gratin was, to the best of my recollection, one of, if not the best I've had. The depth of flavor in the broth, the perfect combination of crunch and soft in the croûton, and the sustained stretch of the cheese made this soup my best friend. I wasn't terribly hungry, especially after the soup, so I enjoyed the lobster Mac and cheese. Like the soup, great flavor and texture, and lots of lobster (but no matter how much lobster, it's never enough ). Not too anything, just a great balance of flavors, textures, and... lobster. I want to call out the wonderful popovers served at every table, and mention the steak as well. While my dining companions enjoyed the steak and side dishes of creamed spinach and mashed potatoes, the reviews were stellar. Cooked to perfection, the steak had a great char on the outside and tender, buttery texture inside. Even I was impressed! With multiple drinks, the bill was about $100/head including tip. I've dined at a lot of these types of steakhouses and they are all "generally" the same. Expensive slabs of meat. Everything ala carte. Great place for a drink though as the bartenders are good with great selections of spirits, wines, and beers. But all at a high end prices. Apps: --Crispy Wagyu Dumplings; served with 2 sauces: sambal & mustard Very flavorful and different. Won't be going back. Ordered my filet med/rare. 1st one came over cooked, sent it back. 25 minutes later I had to ask about the status of my new filet. It finally arrived overcooked again. Sent it back. Finally 3rd filet came med/rare, but could tell it hadn't rested properly. My party was long done with their meals by then. It's a steakhouse for gods sake but can't cook a simple filet to order. I understand mistakes can happen, but 2x is absolutely unacceptable. Management was apologetic but didn't really care all that much. Oh and least I forget to mention the occasional giant fruit flies (?) hovering over the table. Disgusting. Visited on a weekend for date night and we were pleasantly surprised with this restaurant. We had reservations and were seated upon arrival. We were seated directly across from the bar. The server was attentive but not overbearing. They brought out bread and butter for the table which was warm and flaky. It was almost like a croissant- light and perfect as a pre-meal treat. I ordered a Jack & coke and it was well balanced- not too much soda nor too much alcohol. We then ordered the bacon and a Ceasar salad to share as appetizers. Both were good. For my entree I ordered the petite filete and we shared truffle fries and Mac n Cheese. The filete was cooked exactly as ordered (medium). Food was very good. We are very particular about our steak and this was a good steak (not the best we have had, but good). My only critique of the restaurant is the lack of music. They should have low music playing so that we don't over hear everyone's conversations. This stood out to us. Came here again for dinner with a large group and was once again very happy with the dinner I had. The dirty martini with blue cheese stuffed olives was the best martini I've ever had. I've eaten here twice and both times have been great! The steak, service, desserts, everything! On my last visit I had the prime cowboy steak which was cooked to a perfect medium rare and was seasoned perfectly. The shrimp cocktail was great too! The shrimp were huge and cooked perfectly. I also liked the butter cake. It was really good! I'd order everything again. The service was also phenomenal. I got the 8 ounce filet mignon and it was absolutely delicious. I also got a side of brussels sprouts that were mixed with a whole bunch of other things but can't remember lol but again very delicious. It's definitely very pricey! If you're a wine drinker, prepare to spend some money too because one glass was $30 and they actually had one that's $55 a glass. believe that! lol. The service was great. The inside was really nice. Very nice setting however, trying to find parking was a nightmare so definitely get there earlier before your reservation to find parking. This was definitely a nice treat for me. Roots steakhouse is a pretty solid restaurant. Famous for their Beef Wellington and their outstanding service, this place doesn't disappoint in terms of those two things. The ambience is that of a Pub/High-end eatery and is always bustling with people. So much so that sometimes it can be a little difficult to dine here. It's always extremely loud and even if you have a reservation for 7 PM you typically are going to wait 20 to 40 minutes for your table. And in my opinion, that truly disappoints that discerning diner. Anyway, let's talk about the food. The shrimp cocktail is phenomenal and any of their choice salads aren't going to disappoint. The steak options are always premium choice and cooked to perfection. But for me, my go to choice at this establishment is always going to be the Beef Wellington. I admire this dish for its simplicity, creativity, and its presentation. Oh yeah and also its flavor. The outer pastry is very light and buttery and the beef is always tender and cooked to perfection. What can I say, I just love this dish. So in summary, if I were you, I would definitely visit this establishing during it off peak hours, and I would definitely order any one of their delectable appetizers. It's first off a n jelly appointed restaurant and bar, with rich wood and tiles ceilings and ambient lighting. The staff from Waiters, servers and bus persons are impeccably dressed in high end attire. The Wait staff in white and servers and bussers in gray. Our waitress was top notch, knowledgeable, friendly and really stayed on top of the table. Drinks refilled as soon as she spotted them near empty. The menu selection is chocked full of choices from meats to seafood and numerous sides and appetizers. You start off with fresh popovers which were not the highlight of the evening. While good they were a tad overcooked and slightly burnt. The bacon appetizer was nice thick cut with a sugary coating. The lobster bisque and French onion soup also done very well as was the wedge salad. Main course of steaks and scallops and shrimp no one went hungry and some left over. Sides of mashed potatoes and Mac and cheese were also well done. I liked the taste more than my husband but they weren't the best I had. We also weren't impressed with the popovers. They were reheated. That's their table bread version. When we pointed that out, they replaced them with fresher ones. Still tasted too eggy for us. We loved the sides. Went to Roots for a birthday dinner on 12/20, had never been before, and they exceeded our expectations tenfold. We had an 8PM reservation and they were a little delayed, which was well understood as the place was packed for a Friday night. We grabbed a drink from the bar and stood to wait. They came to find us from the bar area and walked us to the back seating area. Once we were seated, we had a delightful server and were treated very well. We ordered the Lobster Bites and Calamari for appetizers, Petit Filet Mignon and Beef Wellington as main dishes, and Truffle Mac and Cheese and Bacon Brussels Sprouts for sides with a few cocktails, including an amazing Gingerbread Espresso Martini. Everything was delicious and superb! The icing on the cake was how they never once questioned that our reservation was to celebrate a birthday and graciously delivered a Roots Sundae for the table for us to share. We are not the type to want lots of happy birthday attention, so that was perfect and greatly appreciated. So I'm back after a 1+ year hiatus. The service and staff are really great. Friendly, enthusiastic and fast. Food and drink are delicious. The only con - and I hate to bring it up - is they can never get my steak correct. For some reason it's always more well done. Not sure if their definition of medium rare is medium? My definition is cool red center and pink all around. But my steak was light pink in center and gray all around. And if you send a steak back by the time it comes out, you're the schmuck watching everyone eat and then later them watching you eat. So I smile and nod, and don't send back. But for a $50-60 steak - and considering I can get it perfect at home every time - I would expect a steak place to do the same. Or at least err on the less well done side. Food we very tasty nicely seasoned love the crispy shrimp scampi. Ambiance spacious but poor acoustics. Server was not engaged not very attentive to detail. At the end of the meal we gave clear instructions to place 100 dollars on the credit card and take the 40 dollars cash tip. As he walked away stated just 100 on the card. We acknowledged yes he then proceeded to a bill the entire amount 160 on the card instead of using the additional 60 to pay the bill. So Nick walked away with a 100 had we not noticed. I would suggest some remediation in his costumer skills and basic math. Or was this purposely orchestrated? So if you go here be weary of Nick and count your cash. read more

The service was great and the food was amazing. We met here 25 years ago. Love coming back. The place changed owners multiple times throughout the years. We enjoy the food. We will come back. Can't rave about this place enough. My friend took me here for my birthday and we sat at the bar for some drinks. The bartenders were so great & fun and we Ordered the best dirty martinis and shared the waygu sliders. They melted in our mouth. So delicious. And then the Mecca of all sundaes came out. Do yourself a favor and take you friends or significant other here for their birthday. You won't be disappointed. read more

Overall taste is ok. For the price point is close to Peter Luger, but the meat quality and the portion is not there. No sizzling plates for the porter house and slightly over cooked from MR we ordered. Service was awesome and the ambience is pretty nice. read more
