I stopped here for a bagel earlier this week and it was very satisfying. I got an everything bagel with egg, herb cream cheese, and turkey bacon. It was a scrumptious combo and I thought the bagel itself was a very good bagel. Each addition is a bit pricey - $4.50 each for the egg and turkey bacon, for example. In general for their own specialty bagels or for a combo of three things you make yourself, you're looking at a $15+ bagel. However, said bagel also comes with an enjoyable ambiance. It's a bit indie/cutesie/intentionally lighthearted but very enjoyable. There are window seats to look out on to the street and a whole separate large room of tables that would make for a good place to get some work done if that is the goal. There is sweet gift section with the Russ & Daughters story/cookbook, t shirts, and clever hand-designed cards. The service was hit or miss - one employee was very attentive, another seemed annoyed to have to serve customers (although in a NYC deli, after which this place appears to take its inspiration, a little grinchiness perhaps makes the experience more authentic). All around, a few small negatives, but I really enjoyed my bagel and its surroundings, so five stars. UPDATE - I went back a second time and got basically the same thing minus the turkey bacon ie a bagel with cream cheese and an egg, and an iced coffee. Came out to about $15. I think their prices are just unreasonably high unfortunately and the egg the second time around fell flat. read more

I love Rose Foods. I think the bagels are great. Everyone has always been friendly when I've gone in. It's totally easy to order online and run in and pick up your order. Sometimes I just like to sit in the window and eat my breakfast and do the crossword puzzle and pretend I have a life of leisure. The Monday Morning bagel sandwich -- chopped liver and gribenes -- so good! My Nana is summoned from the beyond whenever I eat it. Add the pickled red onions to it. The person who took our order was lovely and then it went down hill from there. It took 25 minutes to get a to go order, we had to painfully watch someone slowly wrap the bagels which took FOREVER! My husband and I love rose foods! It's very retro and New York and Jewish. It's excellent. The bagels are delicious as is or with just regular cream cheese, but the magic is in their creative and flavorful topping options. Coffee was solid. Discovered Rose Foods for the first time the other morning and I'm wondering how it took me this long. This locally owned Jewish café is an absolute gem and has quickly become a new favorite in Portland. The menu is impressively well-rounded, offering everything from classic bagel breakfasts to hearty full-plate morning feasts. They also have a great selection of prepackaged items if you want to bring some of the goodness home. The interior? Total vibe. Bright, clean, and filled with plants, it's the kind of space that makes you want to linger. Yesterday I went back to the store & bought a selection of great bagels. Have never had a bad bagel. I talked to the manager Casey about how hard the last order of matzo ball soup was & how little amount of broth there was. A true Matzo Ball should be fluffy with some flavor to it. Casey wanted to know how the matzo ball turned out. Very sorry Casey the matzo ball & broth both didn't pass muster. She was a very sincere manager & comped me a qt of broth & 2 huge matzo balls. For dinner I heated up the matzo ball soup to share with my wife. The matzo ball was hard as a rock with no flavor & the broth was flavorless & a small amount . Casey I've been making matzo ball soup for 60+ years. I shared with her how to get a matzo ball fluffy & light as a feather vs had as a rock. Please take my advice given to you & please once the matzo balls are placed in boiling water the cover goes on without touching the cover. My matzo balls are 1/2 the size of yours & cook covered for 45 minutes. I suggest with the size of your matzo ball they should cooked covered for 85 minutes. Never ever open the cover to check the soup. You might be laughing what do I know? I know how to make a great matzo ball. Please try my advise. I've had many items from your menu. The very best item I've ever had at your store were your potato latkes. I always made a latke that always had great reviews from my family and friends. Your latkes are the best latkes I've ever had. We stopped in to grab some breakfast before heading out to the Portland head light! It was a Sunday morning but was not super crowded which was nice. Parking is difficult on Park but there's a few 30 minute spots out front if you're doing takeout. I ordered the sesame bagel with herby goat cheese and tomato which was delicious! The bagel is fairly chewy which means your filling slides around a bit but it wasn't a huge deal. It took about 5-10 minutes for our 2 bagels to be ready so not bad at all! They have free postcards which were super cute and lots of merch for sale. They have a decent amount of seating for how small it seems from the outside! read more

Wonderful place to stop after a walk on the back cove. My recent trip to Rose Foods was amazing. I picked up two bagels to share and they might be the best bagels I've had in Maine! My favorite things about this place are 1.delicious salmon 2.great window seating to people watch 3.exciting daily specials. I will note it was a busy morning and it did take a fair amount of time to receive bagels. They have more adventurous combos, and things for meat lovers and vegetarians alike. I've settled on four stars for Rose Foods. I've sampled a couple of their sandwiches and they are really good. Price point is on the highish side for me. And it may be slightly inconsistent. I've been just "okay" before, but also "wow"ed. I suppose psychological factors also come into play. I better start making detailed statistics. I won't mention any names, but I actually find the bagels here to be better than some of the other big-shots that everyone seems to praise. They also offer a package of day-olds that will keep relatively well for a couple-three days after, depending on your storage practices and level of standard. It's a good deal either way. Their packaged salmon is also really delicious to bring home and make your own nova/lox bagel. It's also a pretty cute space to chill for a while, though most people seem to order ahead of time and simply pick up. I owe a so much to this business because of the first bite I had of their Rye bagel, during the pandemic, which was a pinnacle moment for me and the gateway to what became a bagel obsession. I have been coming here for years and will continue to do so. The bagels are pillowy soft and chewy - just how I like it! I've had each item on the menu and while their sandwiches are delicious, I always come back to just a simple rye bagel with a hefty portion of their homemade herb cream cheese. While I agree with other reviewers, the bagels/sandwiches ARE on the pricier side, I save my visits for when it's worth it (guests coming to town, stocking up on bagels, etc.). My friend got the Luxe Lox bagel and it was excellent. Very flavorful. I got the Regal Rose, which is a Thursday/Friday special. It was not flavorful. The bagel for the Regal Rose was again of high quality, but the eggs and potato were poorly seasoned. This resulted in the sandwich being very bland. Even the jalapeño mayo could not up the flavor quotient from the bland category. A local recommended Rose as a "must stop and try" before leaving town. The salmon with lox on everything bagel did not disappoint. The establishment is charming and bustling with a mix of locals and visitors. Support at Rose's was quite impressive as they had 7-8 people on staff to fulfill orders (call in, walk in, bulk). We called in and ordered the "Nova" aka: salmon and lox on the infamous everything bagel. Each one of us had a special request: no onion, to cream cheese on the side, etc. We happened to grab the last everything bagels that morning and Rose had our order promptly ready in 15 minutes with no errors. The bagel was quite pricey at $15, but it was worth every dollar. Tip: If you do not prefer a lot of cream cheese, do ask for it on the side. Ugh. This is a hard review to write. I was so happy when Rose Foods came into town. I was excited by not just the bagels, but the variety and quality of their smoked fish. I was also overjoyed by the fact that they offered whitefish salad, a throwback to a childhood favorite and something I head out and seek every time i'm back in the city. I've been a couple of times now and the bagels are great, the cream cheese options terrific and the toppings, fantastic So...why not five stars? The price point, and what you get for that I know, I know, the cost of food nationally is incredibly high and even more so here in Portland, Maine. I also understand, that similar bagel places in bigger cities, just have more business and so can price out a little more reasonably because of the volume they move. While the quality at RF is excellent, the bagels themselves are comparably smaller than similar appetizing places in larger cities, meaning less of everything for often higher prices. On the other hand, the market here in PWM seems to be more than willing to bear the price point, so maybe it's just me. read more

FINALLY an authentic New York style bagel in Portland! We popped in for a quick breakfast while in Portland and we were really happy with our experience. The woman working was so friendly and cheerful without being fake. We each had coffee - mine iced, his hot. It was a decent cup of black coffee, nothing fancy, zero frills black coffee. I was happy to see they had simple syrup for iced coffee if you wanted it,Not everyone does that. We split a couple breakfast sandwiches the salami, egg and cheese on the special bagel of the day, garlic herb and it was our favorite by far. It was so dang good! HOT and the perfect amount of cheesy, melty goodness. Our other sandwich was the L train on dark rye and unfortunately I made a poor choice on the bagel. Had I picked something more mild in flavor I bet it would have been great, but alas, I didn't. The bagel overpowered the delicate flavors of the mushrooms, cheese and egg. I love this bagel place! It's constantly busy leading me to believe it's one of the better bagel places in the area. Most recently I got a Salami, Egg and Cheese, The Good Deal and a Henry VII. I also got half a dozen bagels and horseradish/olive cream cheese. Everything was super good. I love the salami egg and cheese which I thought was great with salami rather than the typical sausage or bacon. The bagels are a bit pricy, but I thought they were good. I loved the horseradish cream cheese. The olive was okay. Someone said that the bagel stale pretty quick, but I found they lasted several days stored in my stashers bag. I want to try and Uncle Leo, Regal Rose (I'm never visiting Portland on a Friday morning!) and the Beef in a Blanket as well as rhetorical latkes. read more

I'm sure I sound like a cranky old Mainer, but sometimes I just don't see the hype. I had my first-ever bagel in 1983 at a location that still exists on Forest Ave in Portland, and to me, they remain the best in town. Someone gave me a gift card to Rose Foods, and the reviews both online and from folks I know were so good, I decided to go above my usual price point and try it. The good? Their coffee was pretty tasty and I dined in, so I got a refill. The "meh?" The bagel and cream cheese was fine... just fine. I've had bagels in NJ and NY and that doesn't change my mind, even though folks say Rose has the most authentic bagels or whatever. Maybe the lox or pastrami would move my review up a star or two, I'm not sure.
