The flavors were not helping either, with the exception of the Dark Chocolate Sea Salt. The chocolate flavor was prominent, but lacked the sea salt. I was visiting Portland and wanted something sweet before my flight back to California. I stumbled upon The Holy Donut and was very happy that I did! There was no wait on a Tuesday morning at 8:00am. I was immediately greeted by the friendly woman behind the counter and ordered a half dozen donuts. The donuts were a different texture than I'm used to but still very delicious. Since they are heavier than the typical donut; I felt like these were actual breakfast and could keep me full for longer (something I appreciated!) And I can attest that they travel well. These donuts have a slightly chewy, dense texture that is very pleasant and not quite like any other baked good I can think of. The flavor doesn't hit you immediately but develops as you chew. We went to The Holy Donut around 7:30am and got four donuts (Chocolate Sea Salt, Vanilla, Blueberry Lemon, and Bacon & Cheddar). The texture of all of them were nice! Sort of like a denser cake donut. I think I prefer the yeast donut dough more. For me, the chocolate sea salt really lacked a strong chocolate flavor. It was more mild to me. Same with the vanilla. The blueberry lemon one was much better! It had a depth of flavor that the other two lacked. The bacon & cheddar one was absolutely divine. Even though we had arrived early, only 2 were left. So I guess other people agree as well! The bacon & cheddar donut was sitting in a warmer, so the cheese was melty when you bit into it. I got a half dozen to try and I know they're made of potato but the sheer weight of the box still shocked me. My favorite was definitely the vanilla glazed . The texture was shockingly light for what I thought a potato donut would be. It was still denser and a bit cake-y, but overall a pleasant texture complimented by the sweet vanilla glaze. I wasn't a fan of the maple, blueberry cinnamon, or coconut donuts. The flavors were all fine, but the inconsistency of the texture and overall denseness of them made them a bit unpleasant to eat. I agree with many of the 5 star ratings! The Holy Donut is most definitely a holy experience. Although a small store front with minimal seating, the menu makes up for it. Oh Holy Donut. Interesting experience. We went on a Tuesday around 11:30. People online mentioned they sell out so I reserved these a few days in advance, but I would say you don't need to do this (unless it's maybe a weekend). My favorite was the Gluten Free vanilla glaze. Believe it or not, it was more moist than the rest of the other donuts we got. We also got the "Vegan" Cherry Glaze, the Dark Chocolate Sea Salt and the Blueberry Glaze. Our second favorite was the Blueberry glaze but they all were a bit dry other than the gluten free (as mentioned). Note - you can get lattes at this location which are very good. It just mentions "Wicked Joes Coffee" online so I assumed they just offered regular coffee. The online ordering system is....confusing? Not sure that's the right word. When things sell out in store day of, they delete the buttons online to order individual flavors even if you're ordering for a future date. Also, it doesn't tell you that they offer lattes here so I ordered a coffee in advance so that I could get in and out the day of picking up. Come to find out they serve lattes so an employee had to refund the coffee, and have me re purchase the latte. Also, they only let you order online during certain hours. They shut it down unless it's during those specific hours. Also, I purchased a Vegan Cherry Glaze online and come to find out when I picked up that all of their donuts are Vegan. I was told this by one of the female employees. So I ended up with just a regular Cherry Glaze. Not sure why online they would offer a vegan cherry glaze then and a regular cherry glaze?? I will say I've had better donuts but still glad we got to try. They are very cakey/dense and could use a bit more icing. Note, this location was much nicer than the location downtown in Old Port. We stopped in there the day prior to see it and this location is much calmer and nicer inside.
