Seasonal/LTO Flavor: Blueberry-Lemon ($4.75)
John D.

I've Seen Better Glaze Family-owned chain of donut shops that started off in a home kitchen driven with a dream and some Maine potatoes, and has turned into one of Downtown Portland's biggest foodie destinations. Holy Donut opened their first Portland location back in 2012, and they now have five locations around the state, including this DT location which is probably their busiest. The Good: *Vegan & Gluten-free offerings--but they're not synonymous! Check the fine print or ask. *Coast-to-Coast shopping options, including vending machines (we saw some at PWM). *Online ordering available for pickup. Tbh this is probably the way to get them, as you can skip the line and go straight to the back at the pickup window and just get your stuff right quick. You're welcome. *Donuts are made daily from scratch and feature seasonal and limited flavors. The Meh: *You'll most likely have to pay for parking at this DT location. *You'll also most likely encounter a large line to order from, depending on the time of day. When we walked by earlier before lunch it was HUGE, but after lunch it was down to manageable ±10 people ifo of us, and it did move pretty quick, as well. I mean, it is just donuts ffs. It shouldn't take you more than a few minutes to decide. The Ugly: *Pricing is a bit obscene at ±$5/ea, but it's to be expected in a extremely popular area full of tourists and cruises. *Take this with a grain of salt, as I'm very particular about donuts in general, but I found them to be very heavy and just OK. Also, the flavors could've been punchier, as I found the taste a little too muted for my liking. Conclusion: Definitely not worth a long wait or the price imo, but if you're in the area, the line is short, and you have $5 burning a hole in your pocket then I say go for it. Because, evidently, I'm in the minority judging by the popularity and reviews. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I was visiting Portland and wanted something sweet before my flight back to California. I stumbled upon The Holy Donut and was very happy that I did! There was no wait on a Tuesday morning at 8:00am. I was immediately greeted by the friendly woman behind the counter and ordered a half dozen donuts. The donuts were a different texture than I'm used to but still very delicious. Since they are heavier than the typical donut; I felt like these were actual breakfast and could keep me full for longer (something I appreciated!) And I can attest that they travel well. The box of donuts survived my flight from Maine to California swimmingly! And we're delicious the following day. I would definitely return in the future!

Service: Be prepared to wait at least 15-20 minutes during peak times. We went on a Saturday after breakfast (9 AM) and this place was packed! There was a line out the door. Food: Interesting concept and twist to the traditional donut! I was very intrigued on the"potato" donut...and had to try it myself! It tasted better than it sounds, I promise! My husband and I shred the Maine blueberry potato donut and it was delicious! Ambiance: No seating inside the shop. Literally counter order /to-go.

I love donuts so trying these popular donuts was a must when we were in Portland. My husband and I shared: - Blueberry Glazed - Blueberry Lemon - Holy Cannoli Key Lime - Holy Cannoli Cherry - Bacon Cheddar To start, we were being indecisive and this is way too many donuts for two people. We planned on saving some for the next day, but they were so good we ate them all. My favorite donuts are light, fluffy, and melt in your mouth. That's not this type of donut. These potato donuts are moist though and still very good. The blueberry and canoli donuts were my favorites. We ordered online, but it wasn't crowded when we arrived around 8am on a weekend.

We went to The Holy Donut around 7:30am and got four donuts (Chocolate Sea Salt, Vanilla, Blueberry Lemon, and Bacon & Cheddar). The texture of all of them were nice! Sort of like a denser cake donut. I think I prefer the yeast donut dough more. For me, the chocolate sea salt really lacked a strong chocolate flavor. It was more mild to me. Same with the vanilla. The blueberry lemon one was much better! It had a depth of flavor that the other two lacked. The bacon & cheddar one was absolutely divine. Even though we had arrived early, only 2 were left. So I guess other people agree as well! The bacon & cheddar donut was sitting in a warmer, so the cheese was melty when you bit into it. The donut had a slightly sweet dough but it balanced well with the savory bacon and melty cheese. Service was quick and easy, though it started to get busier while we were eating. There were multiple tables for you to sit at if you desired. It was an overall chill place. TLDR; I highly recommend the bacon & cheddar donut and the blueberry lemon donut.

I got a half dozen to try and I know they're made of potato but the sheer weight of the box still shocked me. My favorite was definitely the vanilla glazed . The texture was shockingly light for what I thought a potato donut would be. It was still denser and a bit cake-y, but overall a pleasant texture complimented by the sweet vanilla glaze. I wasn't a fan of the maple, blueberry cinnamon, or coconut donuts. The flavors were all fine, but the inconsistency of the texture and overall denseness of them made them a bit unpleasant to eat. The blueberry glaze and lemon blueberry glaze donuts were delicious, but the texture was also a bit inconsistent as well. Overall, the service was quick and it's a cute spot to sit down at, but the inconsistencies of the donut textures makes me less inclined to return.

Stopped in to check out some donuts I read good things about. We got the blueberry lemon and the vanilla w sprinkles. Both were good, definitely a more dense cake like donut, but nothing to rave about. My gripe... $4.50 for a donut before tax!! And I'm used to NJ/NY pricing, but I've never paid $10 for 2 donuts before, absolutely insane pricing hence 3 stars.

Quick in, quick out, this place is all about fast service. Grab your donuts and enjoy them right on the sidewalk like everyone else. We were lucky enough to get a fresh batch. Warm, gooey, and absolutely delicious. It was our first time trying a potato donut, and it did not disappoint! A bit on the pricey side for donuts, but it's one of those Portland must-tries. Totally worth it for the experience (and the flavor).

Food- potatoe donuts and coffee latte I like the potato doughnut because it was soft and gooey and all kinds of delicious service was great and quick ambience is a very quick donut shop. I love the teal color. This is a place to come if you wanna try the original potato donuts in Maine I highly recommended.

Vegan lemon donut

Not the best donut I've ever had, but it was good! I got the vegan lemon. I'm just not a big cake donut person.

You can get a dozen of the assorted Maine potato donuts

I have loved coming to Holy Donut for many years! I loved they accommodate allergies and diets such as gluten free and vegan, so they have something for all in the party to enjoy :) my personal favorites are the pomegranate and the maple bacon, but the chocolate sea salt is a great one too! Honestly, you can't go wrong with any flavor you get!

Ask the Community - The Holy Donut

What flavors are vegan?

Definitely worth a visit to find out.

Are there gluten free and dairy free donuts?

As per my last visit there are gluten free and vegan options, not gluten free/vegan in the same doughnut - it is either vegan or gluten free (not both) if that makes sense!

Are any of the gluten-free donuts also vegan?

They are not. We have Gluten Free Donuts, and Vegan Donuts but we do not have Gluten Free and Vegan Donuts

I'm wondering about the iced coffee here? Are there flavors? How is it? TIA! 🙏

Hi Tia, Thanks for the question. So we have a proprietary blend that we use from Coffee By Design. We offer it in 12 or 20 oz cold brew options, but the best part is that we add coffee ice cubes so that when the ice melts it doesn't water down… Read more

The interior of the donut shop is stylish and welcoming, and I saw a few bar seats if you want to stay to eat. There were plenty of flavors; we ended up trying the Portland Fog (i.e. lavender + earl grey), maple cruller, and chocolate & sea salt cruller. Service at the counter was quick. The donuts were all tasty! I actually liked the Portland Fog donut texture better than the crullers, which were nice and airy but a bit soggy/limp for me. The Portland Fog was especially delicious -- I love a lavender + earl grey combo -- though I wish it was 10% lighter on the lavender flavor. The chocolate & sea salt flavor combo was also delicious (though you can never go wrong with that flavor pairing). I will flag for those with dietary restrictions that there are unfortunately no vegan or vegetarian donuts here, since they fry all their donuts in lard. Overall, a pleasant experience. I'm looking forward to trying more flavors!

After having some of the bread prior to our meals at a few restaurants, we found out the bread is locally sourced at a sister business right around the corner from where ate the night before. There is parking avail for customers in the lot for 30 mins, we prob waited about 20 mins and crossed the threshold into baked goods heaven. There was so much to select from - we got pastries, cookies, pizza and bread - and we pretty much liked everything. Our least favorite was the morning bun with walnuts - we didn't have it right away so that might've been part of the issue. Just note that the bread served at the restaurants aren't available until 2pm - we were leaving that morning so we weren't going wait for it. We opted for other loaves instead and they didn't disappoint. If you want something yummy and fresh - make sure to stop by here before heading out of Portland. I do wish the setup was a bit more conducive to the big crowds as there isn't much space from the front door to the counter but still a fantastic find!

I also got an iced vanilla latte - thoroughly enjoyed the latte! Four adults and a toddler sampled a bunch of donuts - sounds like the start of a terrible joke...These are my notes on all of the donuts and not a consensus from the group, in no particular order. Woopie pie: 4 stars - good flavor and texture, nice way to begin this sampling experience. Bacon cheddar fried donut: 5 stars - delicious, amazing flavor, served hot, good distribution of fillings; would gladly have this again! Margarita: 3 stars - definitely taste the salt and lime, little bit of tequila as well; glad I experienced this, not something I'll go back for. Key lime holy cannoli: 5 stars - love the texture of the donut, light and fluffy, good lime flavor and enjoyed the cannoli cream. Creme brulee: 3 stars - good flavor, the crystallized chunks of sugar were a nice touch; I had high hopes, and it was alright but not life changing - that's on me. Maple: 3 stars - typical maple donut, not overwhelming with flavor but definitely knew it was maple. Maple bacon: 4 stars - lots of bacon, almost balanced by the maple. Blueberry lemon: 5 stars - really great lemon flavor to the glaze, blueberry flavor comes through the donut nicely; looking forward to having this again! Vanilla holy cannoli: 5 stars - again, love the texture of the donut, classic flavor with the cannoli cream; I would gladly eat a whole one of these! Chocolate sea salt: 3 stars - good chocolate flavor, didn't get much of the sea salt coming through. Pomegranate: 4 stars - very sweet, good amount of pomegranate flavor; could not eat a whole one as it would be too sweet for me. Honey lavender: 5 stars - mmm, honey and lavender partnered nicely, sweet but not obnoxiously so, loved how well the lavender flavor came through; I very much so enjoy botanicals in sweet treats and lattes. Toasted coconut: 5 stars - deliciously sweet coconut taste, nostalgic flavor of something my grandma use to make, I really enjoyed it! Such a fun way to bond with friends and spend a relaxing morning on vacation! Would gladly get donuts here again, and now that i know my favorites, I can be more intentional with my order next time
