But today, I wanted coffee and we were right there. Well, my drip coffee was ten times better than the average brew you get elsewhere, and my husband couldn't believe how robust and flavorful his tea was, way beyond strip-mall expectations. I pass this place when I drive to work but it's easy to miss because it's behind Arbys in the back parking lot. If there's a line it moves pretty fast. The baristas here have all been super sweet and my dogs get treats from them every time. My doodle puppy has even start accepting treats from them when he is usually terribly shy about it. I love their hot white mocha. It is creamy. It is sweet to my liking and it tastes great. My other half loves their Mexican mocha and my middle son said their Cookie Monster blended drink is so good! This made for a mentally relaxing cafe experience. They have tables for 2 or 4, with a request to reserve the large tables for groups of 3+. They do not have WiFi. The place was not busy while there - the cold brew showed up very quickly, the latte took longer but it was a reasonable time. The bathrooms are shared with other businesses (like a yoga place) and were clean and quiet, also. Overall, it's decent. The quiet atmosphere bumps it from 3 to 4 that the coffee alone might have merited.

Very sweet and fragrant, and not overpowering. The espresso had a nice toasted taste that complimented the drink. The espresso gave me nice energy throughout the day and wasn't too acidic The pastry options are plentiful and all look well made. Their orange olive oil cake looked yummy but I opted for the lemon poppyseed scone as a safe choice. It was solid texture, not too soft and tasted more buttery as I ate it. Was also able to save some of it for later as it was filling. Parking wasn't the best as you have to turn left to residential, but it was easy to get a spot. They update their website on whether or not they have WiFi and they don't currently have it. It was a great drink that I would come again to get but I save my 5 star reviews for extraordinary beverages. I'm excited to try a matcha next time.

Anyway, the reason why I came here is because I asked a barista at a different coffee shop what her favorite other coffee places are, and she immediately said Koken is her favorite. Their menu isn't online, so I can't look it up. Which is kinda refreshing. It's basically little pieces of bread that are sauteed/fried in some sort of African butter, with an African spice blend, and eaten with yogurt. And it was absolutely perfect. The warm, chewy, spiced bread with the cool, tart yogurt is just so great. Such a good combo. Simple. Not distracted by a bunch of other stuff. You really just get that wonderful contrast. The bread was perfectly chewy. And had a little bit of a crisp on the outside, in a perfect way. Check out the picture. Ultimately, it was just so homey, so satisfying, and so novel. I tried one of their food dishes called Fuul (Eritrean vegetarian stew) made of chopped onions, tomato, peppers, cheese, egg and beans. All of the ingredients were fresh and tasted good but it just tasted like bean dip. I mean the best bean dip I've ever had in my life but that wasn't what I was going for I had no chips lol.

At first, I didn't realize this place was no longer the place recommended to me originally, I'm assuming it just came under new ownership. I know that some places need a little time to settle in, but my experience felt stressful. I would like the emphasize that I do believe the ONE employee who was managing the whole shop was clearly overworked, and not given the tools necessary to give quality customer service. It took around 20 minutes to receive my Latte, and another 10 to receive my croissant sandwich. The food and drink were fine, although I would have preferred a stronger latte (especially for serving Longbottom), and less of a crispy croissant. I appreciated the service, and although clearly disgruntled, attempts were made to give quality service. This is also pure preference but the music was a bit loud. I stayed for about an hour, and the couch was super comfortable. I feel like this place needs some time to settle in. My observations showed a need for increased staff, and stronger espresso. Give it some time, it might come around to being a decent, consistent coffee spot.
