Came here while on a business trip and was very pleased. The warm and inviting atmosphere paired with the food was not a disappointment. We had the root chips and grilled Brie for apps and they were both much more than expected. My main dish was the salmon Caesar which was average. I brought family who is out of town to Roses for a nice dinner. I was extremely disappointed in both the food and the service. It took over 15 minutes to get served water, over 45 minutes to get our bill after boxing our food, and the food was extremely sub-par, especially for the price. I will not be returning. read more

Rose's has a great vibe and a beautiful lakeside view. I got the potato crusted walleye and it was one of the best meals I've ever had. The meals at out table were mostly a hit but some were a miss like the Mac & Cheese and the daily special. I wanted a mojito, but they were out of mint so I got a rum punch instead. It was recommended by our server but I would definitely not recommend it. For $9 I would want something much better tasting. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because our server was not very good. I dont remember her name but she avoided eye contact with us most of the time we were there and our water glasses were empty a good part of the night. Our first time at this cute restaurant on the shores of Reed Lake. For a Sunday afternoon, we were seated with a view of the lake. Such a tranquil lake which had a few sailboats and even a paddle boater. We ordered tempura perch and a burger which were delicious. Our Check was accompanied with little cups of Carmel corn which they are famous for. The wood fired oven leaves a smokey but not intrusive smell in the air. So much history here makes it a must stop for lunch or dinner. I am hooked! read more

Their vegetables chips and dip appetizer is great (although it is enough for 6 people); I would suggest the warm cheese dip might be substituted with a (cool) gorgonzola dip, but I would definitely order this again. Walleye was great as was the Farro salad. Mac and cheese was quite good, but $20? really?? Seating at the lake was very nice. One big complaint was the gazpacho. This was simply some chopped up vegetable in a little bit of tomato juice. No dill, no spices and not so much tomato taste. Gazpacho is blended so the flavors can mix; the chunks are very distracting and miss the whole point. Someone really missed the boat here. Still, this is a very nice places, and we would definitely go back. But I would not order the gazpacho. read more

Amazing...Rose's is the place for first date...(like I had) for a birthday, for get together.. or just for a great night out. It's located on the lake, with indoor and outdoor seating, fireplaces and heating lamps help on a cool night. Service is quick and friendly.. had the grilled Brie can make meal out of it, variety of options for all dietary restrictions. Went on a Friday night had a couple of drinks and than put our name in.. they don't take reservation. It can be a wait but it's worth it... Beware of parking.. It can be hard to park close by.. Love, love, love this place! Everything about it. The location, the old time photos, the ambiance...absolutely everything! The staff is great, accommodating, entertaining and relatively fast. After coming here a couple of times I am very much looking forward to going back. The menu has a variety of things to choose from. The pizza is excellent. This time I ordered the Peasant Salad and Butternut Squash soup. I opted for the small version of the salad and a cup of the soup. Let me begin by telling you the salad was awesome and I considered it quite large. The soup was amazing, too. I love this kind of rustic soup this time of year and it was not a disappointment in the least. As it is peak season I could not stop staring out the window enjoying the colors on the lake. Rose's is a special place in a lovely little neighborhood right on the water. It's nice inside, but sit outside if you can because it's just Heavenly. Beautiful lake and little ducks waddling past your table. We came for a birthday party and had such a lovely time! As for the food, well ... it was phenomenal. Appetizer was the artichoke caviar which was full of flavor in every bite. I had the peasant salad with grilled salmon and it was simply delicious. Crisp, fresh and very flavorful with a yummy dressing. The salmon was cooked perfectly. My husband had the yellowfin tuna and raved so much I had to taste it and OMG it was fabulous. My son had the Mac and cheese which had bacon, corn, ham and other things in it. He said it was the best Mac and cheese he's ever had and had a great, rich, smoky flavor. My daughter had the Farro salad and raved about it too. I tasted and just amazing flavor and lots of texture. All delicious and a fun place to go. I'd give it more stars if I could. Wonderful atmosphere and even better food. Rose's sits right on Reeds Lake and it makes for a beautiful night out for dinner. You have to order the Root Chips. You cannot leave Rose's without ordering them, they are to die for. As far as entree options, I have had many of the items on their menu but my favorite is the Margarita pizza. All of their pizza's a wood fried and absolutely delicious. I'd also recommend the Rose's Pesto Chicken Salad, the Roasted Portabella or the Veggie Wrap. Forewarning there might be a long wait but generally it's shorter than they tell you. Request to sit on either the outside deck or the patio, it's worth the wait. read more

I've been to Rose's probably 20-30 times over the years. I've enjoyed the new construction. The view is wonderful. However, I've been increasing aware that the level of service has really deteriorated in the last year or two. We were there tonight and ordered a bottle of wine. Brought just the two filled glasses. Called it to his attention, could we have the bottle. No, he had just finished a bottle for these glasses. If we wanted a bottle, we'd have to wait until next order. We had an appetizer, which was good, however after, the waiter brings our check. (Maybe he was tired of us?) We stayed and ordered salads. In order to get new silverware, I had to drop mine on the floor. I hope the Gilmores are reading. Something's slipping here. read more

Roses Restaurant is located on one of the best pieces of real estate for a dining experience in the Grand Rapids area! Reeds Lakes is one of those picturesque spots which features sail boats and a lovely park area from which to enjoy the view. Given these extraordinary advantages, I would have hoped to give the restaurant a higher rating. However, our last few visits have been interesting...sometimes Roses has been spot on and at other times, the service and offerings have left more to be desired. A recent visit with a business associate was interrupted almost every 5-7 minutes by a very eager server. This was in stark contrast to another visit in which the waiter disappeared after bringing the drinks for over 40 minutes and when we asked for some bread omitted bringing plates...we had to get up and get some ourselves. The table was not clean and the glasses were never re-filled...You get the picture. I go to Roses for the atmosphere, but increasingly spotty service diminishes even that. When I was a kid, my Grandpa would take me to this place for a hot dog and a lemonade. It was a big deal, and you sat at wooden picnic tables (whether you ate inside or out), and the mustard was really spicy, not that yellow stuff that French's sells. Absolutely STUNNING views at this lakeside restaurant with a pleasant bar and a good quesadilla appetizer enough to share for a light dinner. It was 69 in Grand Rapids yesterday--the first such day of Spring--and it was idyllic at Reeds Lake, with teen boys playing frisbee, women striking yoga poses and dogs nagging their picnicking owners to stop eating and throw the ball, for God's sake! The apartments are lovely along the lake and this is a charming part of town (minus that bizarre pink parking structure which looks faintly like a vulva and represents and argument for modest--not fascist--architectural controls). The patio is beautiful but that's just for those eating a full meal rather than appetizers. You can sit at the bar or at one of the high tables for two, which furnish views of the lake as good as those from the tables in the main part of the dining room. My wine, a 6.50 white, was not very good but I'm sure if you spend 8 to 9 it's fine. My friend enjoyed his beer, 5.50, some sort of darker ale. Service is friendly as you would expect in the perennially cheerful and friendly Midwest and my friend tells me it's a nice bar to go and chat with people (not so much a pickup thing as a community one). The lake view drives up the price, of course, and the entrees aren't cheap but the portions are predictably large so probably it remains reasonable if you split an entree and order a salad or soup (the cheapest items on the menu). read more

When I come back to Grand Rapids, I always stop at Rose's. It's a touchstone with memories of ice skating, hot chocolate, and the caramel corn. In the summer, hot dogs and memories of water skiing and sailing on Reeds Lake. Since it was only 2 blocks from my high school, it was a lunch stop, too. I've had some good meals at Rose's. Their pizza is pretty damn good. The little bag of caramel corn at the end of the meal is a real treat bringing back memories of sharing with my best friend way, way back when. I ate brunch with a large group in early June. It was disappointing. The place had that "hungover feeling" from the under-performing staff including the kitchen to the slight blowsy look of the physical environment. Everything was just off. Nothing on the menu appealed to me. Some of the offerings were off the wall--sweet potato quiche?--or unappealing due to the kitchen sink approach (more is better: if three elements were needed, add six). I was surprised they didn't have just a breakfast menu included with the brunch listings. I asked if I could have poached eggs on toast with a side of hash browns or whatever was close and some salsa. I received 2 poached eggs, then the salsa, the toast about 10 minutes later, and no potatoes. I ended up eating cold eggs on hot toast. I mean, if you order eggs and toast, they normally come at the same time. The place was kid friendly with well-behave children eating their meals without tantrums. Blessings. The two "tweens with out party loved being able to go to the deck to search for frogs and watch the fish. One of the group was celebrating her birthday. We told the manger and asked if we could have a piece of cake and candle for her. We were more than willing to pay. Instead, she received a very generous coupon for a meal. The only problem was that she is quite elderly and lives in Detroit. Maybe we should have called ahead to make sure there was cake on hand or brought one as it seems there was no cake available. Rose's has a great location, except they added on a room that has a canvas ceiling, no decor, and small windows. It blocks the view from the main dining room. On the very hot day we were there, I would have expected the canvas would have been drawn back to give the option to eat beside the lake. I left with the over-all sense that Rose's needed a firm hand at the helm and in the kitchen. Whomever is responsible for the new room, needs to finish it. Otherwise, it would suit for keggers. Lovely location on Reed's Lake, and surprisingly not particularly busy around 11:30am on a beautiful summer Sunday. If we'd not had a toddler, we would definitely wanted to sit in one of the two outdoor areas. The food was pretty good, but nothing outstanding. All of their salads had very many non-vegetable items and ridiculously many unhealthy items. I ordered the chopped salad, which wasn't completely chopped. The salad leaves themselves were not, but the turkey and bacon both were. Both of these items were just overly salty; one of them would have be fine in the salad, but two were overkill in my opinion. Had I cleaned my plate, I would have wondered how much sodium I'd have ingested. The salmon that I asked to have on top was surprisingly good, though. Not a place I'd run back to for the food, but the location is nice and the service was friendly. read more

I wish I could have loved this place. The room near the waterfront was pretty and comfortable and the menu looked great, but the actual experience was a bust. Our waitress was cute and sweet so we were off to a good start but quickly crashed. The coffee was weak, almost watery and it took us about 20 minutes just to get water. The food orders took a short lifetime to come out (maybe 40 min?) and, sadly, the dishes were hardly life changing. I had the special french toast which was actually a chunk of very, very mushy bread pudding (imagine wet bread with no egg, just sweetened, smooshed and baked - no structure at all) sprinkled with a couple tiny under-ripe bits of strawberry. No sides, and no offer of sides. It was a moderately sized hunk (but less than the "standard" of 2 or 3 large slices of french toast and I ate it because I was starving, but I left hungry. Also it said it was creme brulee french toast... but I have no idea where that name came from because there was nothing brulee about it. My companions ate their sandwiches down, but also without rave reviews. One of them requested mustard as we were finally receiving our food and we waited.... and waited... and waited. Finally he started eating and the mustard came when he had about 3 bites left. The other friend ordered a glass of wine with his meal and she had to be reminded about that. Other tables also seemed to be waiting long periods of time without food and there were groups of people waiting in the entryway to be seated when we got there, but there were many empty tables throughout. Tons of potential, but just seems like this place is not on top of their game at all. read more

I've been to Rose's a few times now, last night being the most recent. It was incredibly busy for a Monday night, and we had a 30-minute wait for a table, in spite of seeing many empty ones. Perhaps they were short staffed. The waitress was friendly and efficient, though she didn't bring us bread until we'd been sitting down for 20 minutes or so. The menu was quite extensive, but offered almost nothing vegan or low in fat and calories. I ordered the small organic greens salad without croutons, and the three hummus appetizer plate. The salad was so fresh tasting that I didn't use more than a teaspoon of the dressing on the side. The three types of hummus - red pepper, edamame, and black bean -- were tasty, as were the cut carrots, grape tomatoes, and cucumbers that came with them. The pita points were tasteless and kind of greasy. I don't know what kind of pitas they were -- they were dark brown and hard (fried?). I would have prefered soft pitas (whole wheat or white) over whatever these were. We sat inside the restaurant, but had a nice view of the lake outside. Sitting on the patio would be great, as it is sheltered overhead, but open to the air. I'd love to see Rose's have some vegan menu options, but I'd go back and try again. read more

I wanted to LOVE this place, and don't get me wrong; I did. I loved the ambiance. It was cute, friendly, on the water, great draught list, and had a great lakefront lodge vibe. That food though! The menu looked so good, I don't know how the cook went so wrong! Seriously... 2 at our table ordered pasta. Sounded amazing. What showed up could only be described as noodle soup. I kid you not, had I ordered that I would have sent it back for something else, but those that are it didn't want to rock the boat, because the sauce/broth/soup "didn't taste too bad." However, they both revealed at breakfast next morning that they were ill in the middle of the night. I ordered a grilled cheese that came with fig jam and beets on some sort of multigrain bread. Sounded pretty delicious and straightforward, and who could mess up a grilled cheese, right? This guy. The cheese was warm, but more softened than actually melted. I ate it without complaint anyway, as it tasted nice with my beer, and at least I didn't have pasta soup in front of me. I too, however, got sick in the middle of the night. In summation, go for the drinks, the view and the friendly service. Just... Maybe eat somewhere else before you go. Some of what was ordered for dessert wasn't bad though... But as previously mentioned, 3 of us were sick, soooo I might not risk it again. 1 star for food, 4 for ambiance, including -1 for mosquitoes and no citronella. read more

Had a business dinner at Rose's while in GR for a conference. We got the last two spots in the parking lot. We sat in front of a huge stone fireplace which added to the experience! The menu is pretty extensive with a nice mix of appetizers, salads, sandwhichs, seasonal dishes and entrees. At the suggestion of a Rose's regular, I opted for the (fancy) grilled cheese (on grilled sourdough, with pancetta and mixed greens), which came with sweet potato chips and pasta salad. One of my colleagues had crab cakes, which looked awesome! The fresh grated parmesan and oil that they offer for the bread before dinner is pretty amazing. If the review was based solely on location, this is a five-star restaurant in every sense of the word. The lakefront seating is impossible to beat unless you own a home on Reed's lake, and if you're reading Yelp for restaurant advice, you probably don't. The vibe in here is so relaxing that you can feel the tension melting away from your shoulders. But Rose's falls shorts is the food and service, falling so far short on our most recent visit (June 26) that we won't be back. We were prepared for a hour-plus wait on a Saturday night during the summer and spent the time at the bar with cocktails and appetizers, which was great. The actual meal and our waitress was another matter. She appeared to have three or four tables but spent most of her time in the kitchen chatting with other staff. After taking our order, our food took an hour-plus to arrive and was hardly worth the wait. I've never had salmon so overcooked, it was like they just put it in a microwave. An acknowledgement of the delay would have been appreciated, but it never came. If you're looking for a pizza or a burger, I'd still recommend Rose's. If you're expecting something on the nicer end with good service (at least if you got our waitress), head elsewhere. read more

Good beer selection. Decent steak layer dip (overpriced for sure), decent calamari (a bit on the heavier side and lots of onions and bacon but not as much calamari as would like for the price). I didn't love the complimentary kettle popcorn provided at the end. Just wasn't anything special or worth the calories - tbh. We ended up feeding it to the ducks just over the railing. Roses on Reeds lake is definitely a favorite. An interesting atmosphere where you have some out & dressed for a nice dinner, and others grabbing a bite. In other words, a restaurant for every style. Plan on waiting for a table during peak hours starting Thursday. Off hours you can pretty much walk in and be seated immediately. 3 seating options during warm weather give you the deck on the water, inside the covered patio, or the restaurant. The winter offers heat in the patio. The Beers on tap have definitely stepped up their "Beer City" game and you can find some variety there. Mixed cocktail menu changes seasonally. Now for wine, I think you will be pleased with a top notch selection. By far the best (limited) selection I've seen at most restaurants in the area. There is a Reserve list, but you will need to ask for it, and you Should! The menu is the same for lunch and dinner, with a feature menu daily. My dinner this time was the Sesame Seared Ahi Tuna. Served rare. Cooked perfectly and loved the crunchy seeds coating the outside of the tuna. The fish was laid over a mix of whole Cashew nuts, edamame, mild baby pearl onions, sprouts & a soy glaze. The Sriracha sauce is placed on the plate, easy to avoid if you don't like the heat. This is a favorite!! I would skip the steak, wasn't a fan and for the price you chance leaving disappointed. Some of our favorites: House made root chips, & calamari, for starters. The crab cake is amazing, and you can get that on a salad if you ask. Squash bisque, and every salad. The Ruben is HUGE & amazing. If you had chips for an appetizer, ask for the Sweet potato fries. Worth the up charge!! Ok, now that TURKEY BURGER, give it a try if you are curious. House made and seasoned perfectly, and duck bacon?! Yummy. The Parmesan Chicken... I never order chicken out. This is soooo good and juicy. Get the full order for leftovers!! Sesame Ahi Tuna, and the risotto dishes are fantastic. BRING BACK THE CRUSTED WALLEYE!! Please put in a request for the Walleye... Lastly, desserts. Who wouldn't love Rose's expansive patio that looks out over Reeds Lake?! It's gorgeous! And although the patio wasn't open on a chilly March day when I stopped in, the food and atmosphere was just as pleasant on the inside. I came in for happy hour with some coworkers on a Thursday after work. I ordered my first Bells Oberon of the season and collectively, the table ordered the popular Root Chips and the portobello Fries. The portabello fries came out stacked as a Janga tower, as our server joked and was served with a fruity, chutney topping. I wouldn't think to put those two things together but the crisp of the fried mushrooms worked well against the sweet fruit mix. The Root Chips at Rose's are always a hit and we devoured them quickly while fighting over who gets the last of the goat cheese topping on them. I just wish they offered more happy hour specials but with the majority of their menu devoted to entrees' it's a great place for a special night out or a nice dinner with your family. I've eaten here for both lunch and dinner several times with equally good experiences. I would recommend their wood fire pizzas. Every time I'm in GR, I want to come to Rose's. And the only thing I want to eat is the fish dip with crudite. I don't know what they put in it, but it is perfect for any season. Especially when eating out on the patio, facing the water. Also, there are usually birds flying around inside, which I think adds a little something extra to the ambiance. This place was excellent in terms of food AND location! We were visiting from out of town and heard that this place was very trendy at most! The food was very good especially their spicy sausage pizza and we had a great view of Reed's Lake too! Definitely will come back the next time we're in GR again. read more
