We had lunch here today and boy what a great decision that was. The location on Reed's Lake is spectacular and we sat outside to better enjoy the view and the great weather. Our waiter was so nice and informative and made excellent recommendations which we took and were happy we did. We had the Root chips with two different dips which were so yummy. We split a salad that had mixed greens, roasted red peppers and artichokes. Then we split the Walleye fish with Swiss Chard and risotto. Delicious! We will be back. Let me start by saying I love Rose's. Been eating there since 1987, when it was a falling down hamburger joint run by Bud Rose. Now it's a full-scale, upscale eatery that seldom disappoints. My chicken pesto pizza today was perfection; our friend's mushroom pizza was grand. Only Patti's cheeseburger didn't pass muster - a shame because Rose's burgers are usually top notch. Of course, there's Reed's Lake just a few feet away, and the lovely trees and flowers surrounding everything. On a 72 degree day in October, there is no where else I'd rather be than Rose's on Reed's Lake. Perfection. read more

I fluctuate between giving Rose's a 3 or 4 star review. I prefer to round up on Yelp and in this case, the caramel corn is my tie breaker. The entrance is by far the strangest part of this establishment. If you're lucky enough to find a parking spot amid bustling EGR, the entrance to Rose's reveals a fuzzy brown curtain hanging in place of a door. The curtain unveils a peculiar small room; it's my presumption that this room is utilized as an inclement weather barrier. Regardless, I find the room to be cold (in both temperature and aesthetic). Most establishments with an area like this have an actual door for the foyer. Surely there's a more tasteful alternative for this space. Beyond the strange room is the actual door to Rose's. The rest of the restaurant is warm and well designed. A homey and friendly feel with a beautiful view of Reeds Lake. My most recent visit to Rose's was for a nice lunch with two of my girlfriends. A bubbly hostess greeted me and I requested that my friends and I be seated at a booth. Eventually, she worked this out and we sat in a cozy corner. Our waitress was fine, though she seemed hurried and was short with us, perpetually rushed. She managed to bring out every order correctly, but I prefer a more personable vibe. Rose's is the only remaining Gilmore Collection restaurant to make their root chips in house. I'm disappointed that Blue Water Grille has switched over to the store bought "Terra" brand chips. Kudos to Rose's for keeping this appetizer authentic and delicious. Both the goat cheese and red pepper aioli dips are delightful as well. I began with the butternut squash bisque. It was so hot I waited nearly 20 minutes until I could comfortably consume the soup. It was bright yellow in color, the texture is smooth and not too thin, and the flavor is extremely sweet. For me, the sweetness was unnecessary, but my friend, Lauren, raved about it. My biggest foodie tip for patrons is regarding the Bruschetta appetizer. I ordered this for my entree and I found the tomatoes and balsamic to overwhelm the dish with acidity. Ever resourceful, I used the remaining goat cheese fondue to spread in the bread before replacing the tomatoes back on top. Total game changer! Both of my friends ordered the Farro salad. It looked fresh, but overly seedy for my liking. They didn't mind it but noted that it wasn't memorable and my bruschetta was far superior. Adding chicken or another protein may help amplify the flavor and sustenance of this salad. I am always annoyed by paper straws. There are other much less frustrating eco friendly options. These straws disintegrate almost immediately in liquid. Good thing I had remembered to bring my own metal straw along! I love the touch of being served a sample of Rose's famous caramel corn upon settling the bill. It's delectably tasty and a cute and unique touch. Keep in mind that Rose's is an EGR favorite and be prepared to wait if you don't have a table reserved. read more

I think this is a great stop for some apps and a drink or two if you can grab an outside table. I was so excited to visit Rose's for the first time yesterday. I've heard so many great things from my coworkers who live near there. We sat on the patio which had a beautiful view of Reed's lake and the boats that were docked. We arrived at 11:30 and were seated right away. They got very busy shortly after. There were a few things that made my visit not that great. 1. We ordered cocktails. I verified mine wouldn't have vodka in it as I don't like the taste and she said it was made with gin. She brought me the drink and said she was wrong, it was vodka. So I asked her to bring me a new one with gin. 2. When I ordered a mimosa later on, it came with a hair in it. She promptly apologized and brought me a new one after I showed her. 3. My friend ordered the Parmesan chicken plain with no red sauce. They brought out the chicken with red sauce so she had to send it back. 4. Service was quite slow. They were busy though, so I'll give her that. Food: Root chips with goat cheese and pepper aioli - These were fantastic! Looked to be sweet potato and beet chips. Both dips were very tasty. I was highly impressed with this appetizer. It was quite large. Enough for 4-5 people. Parmesan crusted Chicken with Asparagus and Mashed Potatoes - the chicken was a little bit dry. But the crust was fantastic! The asparagus was delicious and cooked perfectly. The garlic potatoes were very flavorful with chunks of potatoes in it. I didn't think the red sauce paired super well with everything, but to each their own. Overall, I will be back to give it another go. The second I saw my plate of food, I instantly began to drool... let me just say it was GOOD! Real good. I started off with the Tomato Bruschetta. The soft mellow grilled tomatoes drizzled with balsamic dressing was truly a taste of heaven. I actually found myself ordering a second serving because they were quite delicious. I would highly recommend the Tomato Bruschetta! When I was looking at the menu the entree that immediately caught my eye was the Cranberry Turkey sandwich. It made me think of how good thanksgiving food is! We love Roses. Here's why: The location is wonderful - it's right on Reeds Lake in East Grand Rapids. On a pretty summer day you cannot get much better views and vibes within the city limits. They do not take reservations so you can put your name in and then walk around John Collins Park just next door as you wait. Lots of benches for sitting or you can always grab a drink at the bar while you wait if there's room. Roses is a Gilmore Collection restaurant so we also usually have some sort of a gift card to use up! The menu is agreeable to almost everyone offering a wide variety of food options: Burgers, Pizzas, Salads, Sandwiches and some other speciality entrees. They've also got a solid/normal kids menu. Their prices are fair for what's offered as well. We highly recommend their root chips (kind of a must order when dining there) for the table to share. read more

A first timer and newbie in GR, we were excited to try. We read the reviews, checked out the menu- waited at the bar for our seat outside and patiently sat for our server. We waited 15 minutes and weren't greeted by any servers. The manager was running around looked at us occasionaly. We asked a runner to find our server, expecting someone to finally come over... No one! We flagged down the manager after quite a long time- who stood over the railing of the upper deck and expected us to shout our order over at him... I'm not shouting my order to you, come to the table properly or send someone over.... He came over and was extremely gruff, as if our presence alone bothered him. He took care of us the whole time. We never met our server. No one even brought us water. Everyone else got water. And a waitress. If the server needs extra time to get out of the weeds then dont seat their section. Good customers dont mind waiting at the bar. It was a disappointing experience. There are 3 different choices for seating at this boathouse style restaurant inside, the patio, and a covered deck. The view is amazing. I recommend calling ahead to enquire about whether there is a wait. The alcohol menu is quite extensive spanning from regular to fancy. There are about half a dozen bubbly choices for example. You MUST order the roses chips. Very classic American food - many dishes will taste like it came from 1975 in a good way. For example, things come with a side of pasta salad. Fun story - you may not want to order dessert - because your check will come with Carmel popcorn. I have overheard the waitress telling another diner this is because Roses first opened as a popcorn stand and this is their way of continuing the tradition. read more

I recently moved to Grand Rapids this week and the food has quickly exceeded my expectations so I decided to take up Yelping. My family and I wanted dinner on the water and found Roses, a restaurant right on the closest lake to our house. Due to the 1.20 hour wait we were quoted we opted in for an inside table, but got to sit outside and enjoy a lovely evening while we waited for our table. Upon being seated the waiter informed us that the kitchen is short staffed so our food might take some extra time. We got warm bread with oil and cheese to hold us over. For the main course I was between the mahi tacos and the seafood ceviche but I ended up choosing the ceviche and I was so happy I did. I always get tacos (usually shrimp) and I wanted to try something new. I got used to the unexpected spicy kick it had and it was incredible. It came with a side of tortilla chips which I crushed up into the bowl and it was served chilled. For dessert I got the tiramisu and it was lovely. Not too sweet and very moist. It was a very large serving and could definitely be split by 2. The waitstaff was definitely busy and our waiter wasn't super knowledgeable about menu items and pairings. But other than that we were seated early and the food was very fresh and delicious. The check came with a side of Carmel popcorn and next time we hope to eat on the outside patio. read more

This is a nice surprise in the midst of east Grand Rapids! A restaurant by a lake with a fantastic view!! I knew I should be in for a treat when my husband and I came for Monday night date night and the house was packed!! The wait was worth it to be seated on the patio with a semi outside view and the sound of crickets chirping as the sun set. Seriously though, we started our evening with the grilled Brie appetizer and was not disappointed! A plate of beautiful fresh fruits, grilled Brie, and cranberry bread!! If you need a quick meal however, do not order this as an appetizer! Apparently, it's one of the longer cook times on the menu but it was definitely worth the wait for two love birds in no rush! For dinner, I enjoyed the Mahi Tacos and my husband enjoyed the pesto salmon with risotto. The risotto was beautifully cooked and the salmon dish overall was cooked to perfection! The Mahi Tacos had a perfect bite and the coleslaw was a perfect addition. The rice however left much to be desired! It was bland and I'm pretty sure it's made with dehydrated peas. I would never order this dish alone!! If I were a chef in this kitchen, I would totally scrap the rice and never make it again!! I would suggest making the rice from scratch or just getting rid of it altogether and going with a simple vegetable side. Overall the Mahi Tacos don't really need much to accompany them. For dessert of course I had to try the tiramisu and my husband went for the crime brûlée! First off, yes it is a genuine tiramisu and a fantastic way to end our meal. The creme brûlée was also very authentic and the custard smooth. Service was FANTASTIC!! He was attentive, offered great feedback and recommendations and knew his product!! I really appreciate it when we receive above standard service!! Great job Shawn!! On a recent Saturday we met friends for lunch at Rose's and we were all delighted with the food and service! All six of us raved about the quality and imaginative food. Three of us had the butternut squash bisque which is a staple there and delicious. We also enjoyed a margarita pizza, two salads, potato encrusted fish and a fall special of squash filled ravioli. Rose's was overall a very good experience. The food was amazingly tasty, our waitress was fast and friendly. The decor was decent, the restaurant had nice natural lighting, it's by the water and it has a colorful tone about it. The only negative thing is that, it is often very busy, so for those who don't like to wait a long time for a seat, it may be hard to recommend this restaurant. That being said, I did enjoyed myself and I will probably go back in the future and I totally recommend eating here if you haven't yet. read more

This used to be my favorite restaurant in all of Grand Rapids! I would come here once or even twice a week! For years I'd always order the veggie enchiladas and I was in love! I couldn't get a dish like this anywhere else and it was so unique and healthy. My husband would make fun of me always ordering the same thing but I like to stick with what I love! We would also order the chip platter with guacamole. Both dishes were incredible and made for a 5 star experience! I love the servers and staff. For about a year now I have been coming less frequently (every other month) because the menu has changed. Please don't fix what's not already broken! Your customers come for the consistency and ambience! I've tried the new enchiladas and once I've had my favorite it's just not the same. I ordered it once and never again. I couldn't even finish it. The cheese specifically was a struggle to eat. I'm having a hard time finding another dish I love. So that why I come once and a while now. It makes me sad. I keep looking online and wondering if the original dishes would come back on the menu. I even came in the fall to see if my squash veggie enchiladas were back. No luck. After going for a run around Reed's lake and hitting a few trails I got hungry. Of course, Yelp helped as per usual. Now, I was hungry, more like starving ! Tired from my run I walked in hoping to be seated outside with a lake view. I was exploring Grand Rapids and wanted to enjoy all the views I could before going back to Hialeah lol. This place was packed! Well duh, it's like 6-ish prime dinner time. And wow was I underdressed lol. I guess people don't dine in their sweaty gym clothes up here. Everyone was really nice though, no Miami " what is she wearing" dirty looks. After a glass of wine and about an hour, I was finally seated in the patio. Right on the water practically. Patience is a virtue indeed! What beautiful views of the swans passing by, people riding on their boats. I never felt more relaxed after my run. Ok enough, here the food New York Strip- My favorite cut of steak was perfect! Lightly salted and peppered, clearly visible grill marks. The green beans were crispy and the herb butter complemented my steak well. It was so worth the wait. I enjoyed this medium rare with a side of faro and mixed greens. The side dish was delicious. It was my first time sampling this grain which is common in GR. I compare it quinoa. Really tart and fresh. Everything produce wise here is so incredibly fresh! Manager Bill went above and beyond in addressing concerns. My family stopped in for a spur of the moment visit after a long work day. We were shown excellent service by Lacy who catered to our needs, answered our questions, gave solid recommendations and checked in on us frequently. Good food: got the house made chips to start (which were tasty in and of themselves but came with flavorful dipping sauces), wife got the crusted chicken entree and I ordered the Rueben sandwich and our little one got chicken tenders. The rueben was good, but a little dry and lacking a combination of flavors; but overall the meal and experience will bring us back for sure. read more
