I'm so impressed with the service here. We were a party of 14 for lunch and the friendliness, promptness, and kindness of the staff was an A+. The staff did a wonderful job - Our glasses were always full and we had extra napkins at all times, while these may seem like small things it made a big impression. The lunch options were responsibly priced and almost all meals came with your choice of sides from veggies, mashed potatoes and even applesauce to choose from pleasing even the pickiest of eaters. I ordered the grilled chicken with pineapple which was good and filling.One thing to note is that the food and sides had a very plain taste which gave it a healthy taste (so I hope it was!) and was not loaded with salt or butter. read more

We just went to Rosie's for breakfast on our way out of town. I was looking forward to a good hot breakfast before a long drive. Took over 45 for breakfast to get to our table. I have never waited so long for breakfast food. We were only a table of three. Was given the excuse of they were busy and there were large parties in the other room. Ok but it's breakfast food. Over medium eggs were over cooked. Gravy was watery and flavorless. The potatoes, who doesn't love breakfast potatoes, you would hate them if this was your first time trying them. A family tradition, we visit any time we are in the area. This morning, 8 of us gathered for the first time in years. Service was good, as was the food. Rosie's is the only restaurant where your server will make nasty comments at you about how much food you've ordered, take your drinks away from you when you haven't even gotten halfway through them, and tell you it's impossible to put red onion on your sandwich because, while they have red onion in the kitchen, it's for salads only and it's "simply not allowed." Rosie's is a great place for hearty all American Fare. Everything I have tried here has been delicious, breakfast, lunch and dinner. Their soups are thick and hearty and portions are plentiful. The staff are friendly and wait times are minimal even at busy periods. I would have easily given this restaurant 5 stars except for one issue. There are cigarette ashtrays placed on the exterior of the building. I visited Rosie's three times this past weekend. On my first visit I spoke to the main receptionist about the disgusting condition the ashtrays were in. One in particular was filled to the top with nasty butts and obviously hadn't been emptied in some time due to the spider webs that surrounded the used soggy butts. Today is the third time I visited Rosie's this weekend and no one had the initiative to empty them! It's bad enough to encourage people to smoke at the main entrance, but to combine that with such a disgusting sight of neglect turned my stomach. read more

When you get served a regular ONE slice of (toasted on one side mind you) garlic bread with your pasta meal, well ...there you go. Some dishes are tasty, they're comfort foods mostly. They really would benefit from having a decent daily special, even if it's just for lunch. Otherwise a very dull menu of the same ol' stuff. Atmosphere is comfy, if you stick to the cafe side. There were flies buzzing around all over the resturant and my food came back half frozen for which the waitress apologized for at least five times and had it reheated. Rosie's Restaurant seems to be in the perfect place. It doesn't seem like there are many food options in these parts so if you happen to be around here on a weekend, prepare to wait as this is the hot place to be. Rosie's is the definition of a roadside diner. They have been serving the Middlebury community (and those of us not in the community) for over 30 years with quality food at reasonable prices. Why not give them a try? We came here our first official morning in VT. Met an uncle of Sue's for breakfast and were happy to get seated as soon as we walked in. I started out with a big old mug of hot chocolate with whipped cream on top as I'm not a huge coffee drinker. That hit the spot on a chilly morning. For breakfast I decided on the Stone's Corn ($7.95). Grilled Corned Beef Hash, Two Eggs, Toast & Jam. Side note. One of the breads they have for toast is made in house. Get that one. I believe it is a honey wheat. Killer bread. The portions are nice sized. Not too big. Not too small. Unfortunately no homemade jam. This seems like a place that would have that. Can't ask for everything I guess. Service was very prompt and friendly. Sue's mom works here so she knew a few member's of the staff due to that. This is a very family friendly environment. Good food, good prices and a good location. I give Rosie's a solid thumbs up. read more

Waitress was fine, a bit abrasive, like fine sandpaper. Stuck to yes no answers and was a little cranky, but was kind enough. I ordered the 4x4 and substituted French Toast for the pancakes and extra bacon for the sausage links. These were THE WORST scrambled eggs I've ever tasted. It's kinda common for scrambled eggs in a restaurant to often have an extra yolk and/or maybe a little heavy cream or half and half added to make them extra rich and tasty. These were the exact opposite. They're either holding back on the yolks, to use them in something else, or adding way too much milk. I really think it was the former. They were a watery, mostly egg white mess, with hardly any yolk. Added salt and pepper after the first bite and it couldn't improve it. Repulsive. Couldn't take another taste of it. Left them all on my plate. They used the same mess for their French Toast and it was a tasteless waste of maple syrup and calories. Regretted eating it and wouldn't have continued if I wasn't so hungry. I asked for burnt bacon and was told they couldn't do that as it'll fall apart. I didn't understand that until I saw and tasted the bacon. It was deep fried! No wonder the can't burn it! For the best taste and results, bacon really should only be cooked on a wire rack over a sheet pan or maybe on a griddle. The rack trick is what most restaurants do. The whole experience was so amateur and lazy. Like they're not even trying. This place apparently gets a lot of travelers and tour buses. It's extremely embarrassing that visitors to Vermont might believe this is a typical Vermont breakfast experience. So far from it! read more

A family favorite for years. For generations, really. If you only drive by this place, you owe it to yourself to stop in and sit at the counter or in a booth to check out the vast menu. So many options: dinners, blue plate specials, sandwiches, breakfasts...and a colossal array of desserts. The tollhouse pie, heated up, is not to be missed. If, like me, you only get to this part of world every few years, you may note the building getting bigger and bigger. Why? They grow to meet the need of increased customers. With made from scratch meals, professional staff, and a selection of to-go items including baked goods and maple syrup, I wish every town had a Rosie's. But then, Rosie's wouldn't be special if there were a million of them. Get out of the rut of chain dining (other than A&W up the road, of course), and give Rosie's a try. Turkey dinner? Very unhappy with the " Hot turkey dinner " yes it was hot though the entire meal sat atop a single slice of white bread!! Few pieces of turkey (dark meat) couple tablespoons of stuffing . I asked where the mashed potato was, I was told on the bread, yeah negative! I finished my dinner in about 2 minutes then watched the rest of my party enjoy their meals. Very disappointed and had I been alone I would have complained more outwardly. I can honestly say I would not have served this turkey dinner to a homeless person! read more

I've been here 2 times in a little over a month. Both times my order did not come out correctly. The waitstaff need to pay attention and write down orders to avoid this. It's not fun when you order boneless wings and you get bone in instead...they offered to correct it, which was the right thing to do. But I declined because I was with a group of 8 and everyone was already part way through their meals (for some reason my order came out over 10 minutes after everyone else's- and it was wrong). They waiter also never put in my order for fries until he brought out the bone in wings (vs the boneless that I actually ordered) The food isn't particularly that great to begin with, but I didn't choose the restaurant- my in laws did. read more

Mine always come out so slimey and under cooked and my partners always come out way over cooked. Of course I don't send food back to the kitchen (heard to many horror stories). We came here for a quick lunch while visiting Vermont. Nothing stood out as over-the-top outstanding, but I was happy with my meal and the service was friendly. I went with the highly recommended macaroni and cheese - as did the rest of my family, and we all enjoyed it. It consisted of creamy gruyere, cheddar, and American cheeses baked with a crispy crumb topping. I don't usually order macaroni and cheese when I'm out, but I'm glad I did in this case. They've got a good sized menu with lots of comfort food and something for everyone. It seemed like a lot of the other diners were regulars, which says something about the restaurant for sure. We just moved to town and are excited to check out some new local favorites. My husband found Rosie's online, so we thought we'd give it a shot. My husband got the mac & cheese, and I got the hot turkey sandwich, our old stand bys which I personally think can tell you a lot about the quality of food you will get. Turkey sandwich came with real turkey gravy and moist chunks of roast turkey atop stuffing and bread, side of homemade orange-cranberry sauce, and I got delicious homemade mashed potatoes on the side. Hubby's mac and cheese was thoroughly cheesy, not at all watery like some can be. Also delish. I am looking forward to many more trips back to Rosie's! read more

Stay away. Driving home from a long weekend in Burlington we had already been on the road for over an hour. Having only had a cup of coffee at the hotel, we were ready for a Vermont country breakfast to keep us going on our way back to Boston. What a terrible mistake, as this place is the farthest thing from what we were expecting. The service was as slow as could be. Mind you, not due to a crowded venue or anything like that. Our waitress was continually hanging out in by the front entrance checking her cell phone, chatting with the owner, and conversing with other patrons. We had to bring our check/credit card to her as it had been sitting on our table for a good 7-8 minutes waiting for her to come by and pick it up. The food was awful. I ordered eggs/toast/hash. The hash was canned hash. Literally, it was the exact kind you'd get from the supermarket. Nothing at all original or exciting about what I was served, and quite frankly, for the price I was expecting some homemade goodness. Nope. The wife got a vegetable omelet. Ooof. The vegetables inside were hardly even cooked. There were clumps of cheese. Thick, nasty clumps. And the 'omelet' was very watery and basically looked like scrambled eggs gone bad. If you have Rosie's in your sights, turn around and peruse Middlebury for a better option. If you are a local, move. Or better yet, stay home and cook your own breakfast. read more

For a Middlebury Restaurant, the price to quality ratio is not too bad. For a decent breakfast or lunch it's not bad family style food. Given the dearth of decent restaurants in Middlebury, this is definitely a place worth stopping at, and they have take-out which is just about unheard of elsewhere in town. The service is ridiculously slow, but if you keep on your server, you will get what you ordered eventually. The bottomless cup of coffee is a great feature. read more

I love Rosies. When you think of family cooking and a comfortable atmosphere, I think of Rosie's. Every time we travel to Middlebury, Rosie's is a MUST. My family and I go numerous times every trip. Sausage and gravy over biscuits, is our favorite- unfortunately this time they ran out of biscuits because everyone else loves them too! I ate the corned beef hash which was great! Decor is fun and has a comfy feeling. They even sell pictures taken around Middlebury and homemade things. I love it here! read more
