I had a plumber here in the morning. He was unable to unplug the sewer discharge pipe and recommended I contacting one of the specialist companies like Roter Rooter. Called for an appt. Used an on line coupon. Who knows if it is really a deal. Water was not emptying through discharge pipe. I tried myself with plunging and liquids. Rotor Rooter offers a 6 month guarantee on their work, so if it is plugged again from a non foreign object you are supposedly covered. For what it took, it was worth it. I observed all aspects of this job, and it was not a clogged toilet but years of sludge buildup in the discharge iron pipe in the basement that took hours to unplug. I saw the enormous amount of sludge come out after many hours. The sludge was discharged directly into the open floor drain/soil where it will be released into the soil and become an organic matter. The sludge is a black matter that builds up over time, it is not raw sewerage. It needed to be flushed/thinned out with water and augered. Kit Horrigan was the service technician from Roter Rooter - North. He explained everything he would do and was pleasant. After trying the plug from one entrance, that would have been $580.00, many times from the pipe back up to the bathroom, it wasn't productive. The next step Kit did was to take off the toilet off the seating . Then work out the big sludge clog after an hour. Then put the toilet back on new seal ring, they have these in the truck and no charge for the material. This was additional $300.00. Total job was under 1k. You don't want to be in a house with no toilet flushing. Kit Horrigan was about experience, patience and breaking down the costs and contract. Getting a sh**y job done. I did not purchase the product to treat the plumbing on a monthly basis. It was expensive and not sure after researching I wouldn't have had buyer's remorse, so I skipped it. I paid everything before thier work done, but they have not done. When we found the hot water line leak underneath the house, they took care of it immediately. After it needed to be installed drain to out our house, they are good job, but they asked us to pay for this before work is done. I was OK with the payment before they finished, but they did not say when the excavator people come, he said maybe this afternoon or tomorrow morning. Excavators came in next morning and worked to install the drain, but they did not finish the job, and we got complaints from neighborhood. Here is the picture they done. After they work done, they notice they should work more correctly, and they contacted us. On Friday, 12/19/25. 11:39 am. we had a phone call and conversation with plumber that he worked our hot water leak, and at that time he said excavator people come Saturday, but he did not mention what time, and he said he will find out what time they come in Saturday. Beyond what I would consider a reasonable cost. Came out to clean my mainline, was told one price (around $600) before tech saw anything. Thought that was a little pricey, nearly double the other plumber I called prior, but figured they were here so just do it. They did something, it didn't work, so a few days later another tech came out and they said if you want us to actually do what we agreed upon the first time, it's going to cost ANOTHER $350 magically. So I had to spend $1000 in total, then they tried to sell me a descaling service for another $2700. This was one of the most expensive small jobs ever, didn't fix the problem, did a second one for yet more money that didn't do anything better, then tried to sell me an additional service to actually fix the problem. Practical business would be "hey this didn't work, so let's discuss doing this and we can roll in what we've already done to ease costs, or give some sort of multi trip discount. Or even just do the work we initially agreed upon for the same price and not show up and decide to jack up the price. We had a bad experience. We reached out to replace our water heater tank. As you can see in the photos we uploaded, we are charged $1200 labor and $1600 parts. We researched the tank heater it costs $800 on Home Depot. We asked Mike and Vincent, the two workers from the company for a breakdown of the costs of the parts and they told us they are new and do not know how the parts are recorded and suggested we reach out to the management. We called the company and the company told us they do not have the "authorization" of sharing with us the costs of the parts, also asserting they are allowed to overcharge because of labor time and effort (I thought I already paid 1200 dollars for labor?). The company overall has resisted to share with us the cost breakdown, and there is not a single way that we can add up the numbers to 1600 dollars for parts. I won't recommend this to any of my friends because the company insists on overcharging consumers as well as being arrogant with respect to consumers. We believe the activities of the corporation border on corporate and consumer fraud. When one books a service call with Roto-Rooter, Roto-Rooter refuses to provide any pricing information, rather, you're told "The technician will be dispatched free of charge, and the technician will give you a price after the technician has seen the problem. You have no obligation to accept." I ordered the service call to unclog my house drain, and when the technician arrived, without any real diagnosis, declared "The service will cost $699 with a 30-Day guarantee." This price could have been easily quoted on the phone. This is how the dialogue went ("RT" = Roto-Rooter): ME: "I am not going pay that amount. Are you able to negotiate a lower price?" RT: "What are you willing to pay?" ME: "$350" RR: "How about $450?" ME: "OK" I now realize I should have started at a lower amount, and would've likely ended up paying a lot less. SCAMMERS. DO NOT USE. Had them come because I had a clog in the main sewer line. They have come out the previous two years and resolved the issue. This time, the technician refused to go through me 2-inch clean out because he felt it was unsafe and could cause more issues is the blade got stuck. However, the previous two years Roto Rooter went through the 2-inch clean out with no issue, and completed the job. This year he decided to pull the toiler no charge and try that way. Not for lack of effort (he did try hard) he could not clear the drain and told me I need to have it jetted out in the morning for $1875. I said that's fine, but then he said i NEEDED a restoration truck on sites as well and that would be an extra $1500. We set up an appointment for the next morning, but something didn't seem right so I called Roto Rooter and was told that the $1500 truck was optional and I certainly didn't need it if I didn't want it. That left a bad taste in my mouth, so I called John Sewer the next morning and they snaked the line through the 2-inch clean out, pulled up a bunch of roots and everything was working great again all for only $325! Unethical company even if the plumber who showed up was professional and lovely - phone operator would not provide an hourly rate or any idea of pricing except to say plumber would offer a price during the visit. The issue was a cracked pipe under our sink, 3 days and $420 and a 40 minute visit later, problem solved. My wife handled the visit and felt awkward not accepting the proposal since the plumber was waiting for her to sign....I called to complain - a manger noted their labor rate of $375 was fair despite being more than twice the Boston average - I noted our attorney charged us less than His plumber - he replied plumbers require lots of training, just like attorneys. I got a service scheduled for the next day. I kept the scheduled appointment. Another plumber came out sooner, same day, to fix the heat problem. But that plumber didn't want to address a frozen pipe issue in the bathroom, as a result of the no heat upstairs probably. So I waited for Roto Rooter to look at that problem next day. But they never showed up. The on call lady called me back a few times that day, while I waited and waited, almost all day. Called in May '21, my sewer line was backed up. They cleared the line but left a mess. The receipt showed 6 month guarantee. 4 months later the problem recurred. Th person on the phone said it was covered, but when the techs showed up they said I would have to pay. It was Sunday and my drain was backed up so I didn't have much choice. They did reduce the price. Also, the company said they would be covid ready with coverings etc. I had to repeatedly ask them to put on a mask. Do not use this business! They came to my house and said I had a cracked pipe and would have to dig under my entrance to the tune of $6,000. They drained a pipe in my cellar and made a big mess. They then said they would send someone out to clean up the mess and I could claim it on my home homers. They also said they took a picture of the cracked pipe I never saw any picture. A third technician came out and said I had mold in my bedrooms in the basement. My bedroom doors were closed and he was not asked to enter my bedrooms to diagnose any problems.
