I wish I knew about this place when I was still on mat leave! Super kid friendly. Staff offered a high chair, brought water to the table along with a colorful mini childproof cup of water for my 1 year old, and brought a kid's menu. The kid's menu had a great selection, and portion size was more than enough for my little one. I'm looking forward to bringing my husband in for brunch. They have gluten free items and use free range eggs and chicken. Hope they're not too busy over the weekends...we were in on a wed afternoon and though there were other people dining, it was not a full house so we could enjoy our meal without it being too noisy. Been here several times and the place is consistently good. It's not a cheap eats sort of place with paper thin bacon or Wonder bread toast, which is reflected in the higher menu prices, but it is still a good value. It has been around since 1964 and isn't a chain restaurant, which is rare these days as the big boys are the only ones able to carry the heavy overhead of high rents these days. The food is very good, portions generous, and the quirky little space a throwback to the diners of yesteryear. Can't say I was overly impressed, it is nice to have vegetarian option and appreciate that however I ordered vegan bacon but was given real bacon and when I asked I was told it was vegan, I was suspicious but ate some anyways to later have the waitress apologize that it was not vegan!! We have always loved the Roundel Cafe though we wonder what's happening there.... today we decided to go for a late lunch and found the owner (or manager?) to be quite rude and she seemed quite burnt out or something because she told us how tired she was... she also told another customer after us the same thing... I ordered the avocado tomato benny and when it arrived the food was quite cold... my partnern's meal was cold as well.. When i told her, she said i hadn't "gotten into my meal soon enough"... the eggs, and the sauce and toast were all very cold... it actually surprised me... Why would i lie about my meal being cold?... we thought this bizarre and thought they should have offered to either warm the egg benny dish up or give me another one.. all they did was replace the potatoes and did nothing with the benny... she offered to take off our 2nd round of coffee and that was it and said again that i didn't get into my meal quick enough... this is the first time i've ever had a benny be this cold - not very enjoyable and we're not sure we'll go back... for a $30 meal we thought we could have at least received our meal hot and more mindful service......... we also recommend the owner take some time off and rest up! read more

This is a great little casual brunch place. Part retro-diner, part hippy eatery. They serve breakfast almost all day. Roundel has the usual breakfast fare - pancakes (gluten-free available), French toast, omelettes, eggs benedict. They also have a tofu and veggie scramble, which I think is vegan, and vegetarian huevos rancheros. I ordered the Challah French toast, which came with whipped cream and bananas. I loved the bread. But it was a bit too sweet for me. J ordered the house made veggie burger, which is probably one of the best veggie burgers I've tasted. It's made from sesame tofu and topped with lettuce, tomato, pickles and sweet-chilli mayo. Other vegetarian options: - salads: warm roasted pickled beet, date and feta salad, pear salad - rolled tortilla: avocado, tomato, onion, cucumber, lettuce mayo - avocado, lettuce and tomato sandwich - veggie burrito (dinner) - veggie quesadillas: mango brie, black bean and cheddar, veggie and cheddar (dinner) Oh and they have a long list of milkshake flavours. My friend ordered the chai milkshake. We were skeptical about it, but it turned out to be really good. Not overly sweet and just a hint of chai spice. Well, when the Roundel first opened, it was nice and quaint, but the last few times I've been the service has been horrible. I believe it is the owner (short blonde hair lady) who was crazy rude. I went in for a bowl of soup and was looked down upon because I didn't order a meal. Come-on, The restaurant wasn't full! If you don't like people ordering something small, then put up a minimum order rule. While the food is good the service is very hit and miss (but mostly miss). The first time we went there all was good and we were surprised to hear from friends that they will no longer go there because they found their server really rude. The second time we went there we understood what they meant. Because the food was good we still went there from time to time. Once, after going around the line-up and into the restaurant to see if my friends were already inside, the woman who works there (gray-haired one that so many have mentioned here) actually wagged her finger at me. 3.5 Stars?! I'm a bit torn. Let me explain. We went twice--in rather quick succession--to Roundel Cafe, having declared the East Village brunch spot our new go-to. And for good reason: homemade hot sauce, homemade ketchup, creative benedicts, and more milkshake flavours that one man needs to consider. Brunch is the main attraction here, and even on a stat holiday, they were slinging eggs and bacon till 5pm. Wanting a really lazy Sunday? Never fear! With Roundel, you can sleep in and get that omelette you've been dreaming about. A possible overlooked gem of the menu is the 'corn pancakes'. Quebeckers and New Englanders might know corn pancakes, but the lightly sweet and gritty cousin to buttermilk seldom makes an appearance in BC. Paired with a maple syrup the kitchen has unquestionably flavoured--vanilla? coconut?--was enough to get the table moaning and sighing. So simple and yet, so good. I was upsold to try the blueberries on top--they are in fact very good, very fresh, but too much. Next time, I'd get the blueberries on the side. A little wold go a long way on a very sweet plate. Service was good, if not a touch idiosyncratic, from the stressed owner, to the European server who liked to nuance the descriptions of food with romanticism and flair. The coffee, JJ Bean, is abundant and cups never go empty. Even at the risk of turn patrons jittery. The interior is hardly charming, but people watching--East Van's cooler than thou have conceded the Drive and pushed further East for their favourite meal. Despite all the beards, toques, flannels, and tattoos, nothing about the menu is ironic--no bespoke popcorn, no craft bacon. Just good food. And all of those things are great and make Roundel the kind of place you'd want in your wheelhouse--until we went back one week later and had an incredibly disappointing meal. Was this even the same restaurant? Service was cold, and so was our food. An exasperated owner barked at her kitchen and at us. The Benedict which was last week a plate bursting pile of food, today felt paltry, especially as the eggs were poached until the yolks were as stiff as Play-Doh. We ordered a side of bacon, they forgot it, didn't apologize, and didn't even offer to take the side order off our bill when it showed up as the desert course we didn't ask for. Our coffee cups sat empty. We left still hungry and disappointed at the money and calories we had just spent. So I'm willing to hope that that second visit was aberrational, and that Roundel is better than that. Heck, I've seen it! But when they are off their mark, it quickly slips from something exciting to something upsetting. read more

I'm willing to give Roundel the benefit of doubt and believe this was just an off day for them, because all the other reviewers seem happy with the service, but my experience there was awful. My friend and I stood for 5-10 minutes at the door with not a single employee saying hello to us. There were 2 free tables and a few more that were unclean but empty. No one seemed to be interested in seating the growing mass of people at the door. Everything was slow but I didn't mind because it was a busy Sunday brunch and they seemed to be "in the weeds". I'm a server as well so I know how hectic things can get when you are even a little bit short staffed. The service we did get though was terrible. The server put down half of an eggs benny in front of me, explaining that she accidently pressed the half-order button but laughed and said "most women appreciate it when I do that!". First of all, please don't assume I'm trying to lose weight?? Secondly, how often do you "accidentally" serve your guests half of what they order? I didn't even get an apology. I ordered the other half of the benny and watched it sit on the line as the cook rang the bell multiple times, while two servers stood right next to it drinking coffee and chatting with each-other. Beyond that, both of our orders came out wrong, even though our server wrote everything down, which we didn't end up mentioning because we wanted to get out of there. My coffee was completely forgotten about (but ended up on the bill) and I was charged for a full eggs benedict. First time I've ever tipped less than 15%. read more

I eat out so often it's embarrassing.I have to say my food at the Roundel was terrible.That alone would have been annoying but the apathy of the staff made it much worse. Had anybody come by and asked how my food was or filled my coffee I would have opportunity to say something. Even paying the bill,the server seemed to have no interest in how my food was. A Benny with little to no broken hollandaise on a soggy muffin with wilted salad.The potatoes were good though. Close to $20 poorer I left feeling very disappointed. read more

It started as a nice experience. The food was good and arrived with only a slight delay. But service was really haphazard, with one request completely ignored. Not an inexpensive restaurant. I'm also tired of old 'booths', where the rambunctiousness of the next booth makes you feel like you're on an amusement ride. My co-diner felt the same. We won't rush back. read more

ohhhhh this place! lo....wow what a mess...ate here 5 years ago...i had hair in every item i ordered...hair in my sandwichs, hair in my breakfast, eye lash in my coffee creamer (little silverware creamer)...i was with a friend and we both saw the hairs, not from us...i cut open the burger cuz i was getting disgusted and sure enuff, a long black hair in the meat. The lady owner finally came over and refunded our $27 meal and apologized for the HAIRY FOOD experience. We often come here for late breakfast on the weekends. The eggs benny is my favourite. The atmosphere is really nice, old school kind of breakfast place. My wife swears by this place but always ends up taking someone OTHER than me. We finally went a few months back and I haven't been compelled to write about it as it was neither amazing nor disappointing. We went for brunch and I was excited by how unassuming the whole place was. Service was amazingly prompt; my coffee was never left unwarmed. And though I love places that try to make all their own things, I was not a fan of their homemade ketchup (years of heinz indoctrination?). This place is GREAT! They use organic, locally sourced when they can ingredients as much as they can. Everything tastes fresh. I've had a few different dishes here and they are all delish. Their specials are usually fantastic. I've not been yet for the Thurs/Fri nights. strictly breakfast/lunch. LOVE it here. The staff are super friendly. It's a laid back diner. What can you say about a place that has terrible service and is trying to rest on the merits of an outlandish coffee and milkshake menu. The service was terrible. The server was beyond rude and she pretty much ignored mostly everyone except the 3 hipsters sitting at the 'bar' drinking tea or coffee. When I ordered a sandwich. (which had chicken) she asked for the choice of soup or salad. No mention of what the soup was. My girl ordered a Beet salad. $10. for a little feta, a few beets and standard leaf lettuce. That's it. I wil never eat here again. Ever. Did i mention $3 for the tiniest glass of beer ever. What to say about the Roundel, except inconsistent service, inconsistent food, questionable cleanliness and weird vibe. I had previously been quite a regular at Roundel eating there at least once a week for the 2-3 years I lived in Hastings Sunrise (this is about 7 years ago). After moving back into the neighborhood last year I was excited to return to this spot, but sadly it has disappointed me every time. We stood at the door waiting for 15 minutes on a Sunday morning for brunch without being greeted, offered a drink or anything. We were then seated at a very uncomfortable, crowded, smelly, dirty spot at the bar, right next to the busy pass-through. When I asked for the next free table they refused to move us as it was "too complicated" for the hostess to wrap her head around. THAT'S YOUR ONLY FREAKING JOB. Give me a break! She then proceeded to argue with me that is wasn't their "policy" to allow diners to move tables. That is just bullshit, really. You're not a bank or institution with hundreds of staff with the need for process and policies, I never signed a TOS - you're a flipping DINER ffs! When people in service try to play things off as "not our policy" it basically just means they don't want to give you any more than the bare minimum of service they are required to. It's lazy and disrespectful, and I know that because I worked in service for 10+ years as everything from hostess to bartender to head server. I let her know as much and she called the head waitress over to back her up. Now the head waitress/manager is a total cow, that's just known in this neighborhood. Everyone hates her. She's super overbearing, rude and bitchy without any cause. She treats customers horribly and somehow has kept her position (I have no idea how). She should not be in service with that attitude - go be bitter and used up somewhere else please! At that point I was super hangry and just wanted to eat something so whatever - we looked at the menu and then the hostess then tried to placate us by bringing over 2 coffees we never ordered. We also don't even drink coffee. WTF? By this time we definitely weren't feeling the vibes at all so we left before ordering.
