we had some time to kill before our late lunch, early dinner, and as a party of eight wandering the neighbourhood, we figured a quick coffee stop would be easy enough. famous last words. we rolled up to breka on east hastings at around 1:45 pm on a friday, only to find every single seat taken, not a single spot in sight. it was pretty clear that a table for eight just wasn't happening. while the rest of our group circled for parking, we started hunting for a plan b. there's no shortage of coffee shops in the area, but finding one that can magically fit eight people without much notice is a whole different story. so off we went in the rain, umbrellas dripping, peeking through windows like hopeful caffeine scouts, trying to find a space that wasn't too full, too tiny, or too chaotic. and that's how we landed at roundel café. the moment we stepped inside, it felt like we'd stumbled into a cozy little time capsule. deep forest green ceiling overhead, warm pendant lights casting a soft amber glow, simple metal chairs that somehow just worked, and a long row of booths hugging the wall. string lights added a gentle twinkle, and plants dangled from shelves like they'd slowly grown into the room over time. even with some bustle around the bar, the space felt calm and welcoming. they accommodated our group without hesitation. they don't have matcha, so i went with a london fog with oat milk, warm, velvety, and exactly the kind of drink you cradle with both hands while thawing out and catching up. others ordered their lattes, and conversations were easy, no shouting or repeating ourselves, just relaxed chatter all around. each of us paid separately, and an automatic gratuity was added. overall, a happy little accident of a stop, and honestly, the perfect place to regroup before our meal. read more

Lounge (hipster cafe?) on Hastings near Nanaimo. Guessing this is a cafe during the day, but it's definitely more like a nightclub on the weekend. Parking is available on the side streets. The place is pretty cozy. There is a small bar area with purple lights. The night I went, there was a live DJ and a small(?) dance area about the size of a large mattress. It was loud. Buddy and I could barely talk. As of the time of writing, there is a happy hour menu for the afternoon, as well as late nite. I had their paloma. It was decent. I did not know what to expect going to this place for brunch. I really enjoyed the Avocado Eggs Benedict as the ingredients tasted very fresh. I also really enjoyed the French Toast, it was unlike most places. The French Toast wasn't overly sweet and was perfect with the whip cream. The service was also good as well. My partner ordered drip coffee which was $4 and the server didn't come back for a refill so it was basically the same price as my cappuccino. Getting brunch in this city can be harder than scoring a second date because everywhere you turn, you can bet your bottom dollar you'll be waiting in line. Some places just feel good inside though and for me, Roundel Cafe is that good place. Must have been fate that I stumbled upon this gem of a cafe because I'll admit I wasn't looking for this place at first but love has a funny way of sneaking up on you when you least expect it. Working in the area that fateful day, I emerged from a dark room mid afternoon in dire need of fresh air and speedy sustenance in the form of soup and bread. Walked into another cafe at first and was denied but told to check out Roundel because their soup is top notch, and boy was it. Since then, I now eagerly look await the days I get to work in the area just for my 30 minutes of daybreak heaven - Soup and Buttered Toast for $6! Today we are not talking about soup and toast though. Today we are talking about their brunch because I do not do brunch on account of having to wait in lines and put on pants too early in the morning, but I do do brunch if it is at Roundel Cafe. The quirky restaurant with its neighbourhood diner vibe was full but we only had a short 5-10 minute wait and what's a small wait if you're in good company sitting outside on their cheery turquoise seats? No wait at all. Full Disclosure - I won a contest with them and had a gift certificate so my meal was free but I would go again and I would pay my own money to boot. Opted for the Fresh Tomato, Brie, and Green Onion Omelette ($12.95) this morn. Simple and fresh, with a small side of pan fried potatoes and two slices of toast - what a civilized affair. Pan potatoes were on the dry side but that also means they didn't taste like a pile of grease. In hindsight, I probably shouldn't have gone for the brie omelette because I don't tend to favour mounds of brie all at once but we all make mistakes and next time i'll just opt for the Ham and Cheddar. Ian dived head first into their Benny of the Day because he lives every day as if it's his last and he could not have been happier. Braised Carne Con Chile (Pulled Beef) with Havarti and Habanaro Hollandaise ($12.95) was straight up his alley with fiery kick from the habaneros cutting the richness from the havarti and hollandaise. Whoever told you this isn't exactly what you were looking for after a HIIT class on a Saturday morning at 11 am was lying to you. Yes - Free for me this time, but would I pay to go again next time? The food is very decent here and the prices competitive but don't get it fooled - the real magic in this place is the service and you just cannot put a price on that. Every time I step in, the ladies welcome me with a chipper greeting and a cheery smile and if I had to liken it to anything, it would be the Cheers of brunch places. Wouldn't you like to get away? Tried our hand one last time on January 9, 2022. After being seated we waited for an obscene amount of time to be actually served, possibly longer than 15 minutes. In hindsight we probably should have taken the hint and left. It was not busy, we were one of three tables. When we tried to get the attention of the three servers behind the bar, each were preoccupied with: their phones, bar back duties, and writing in a journal. These "3 fabulous servers" weren't paying attention to anyone to the point it felt like we had entered another world where brunch and service are old relics of the past we are pathetically hanging onto. Once we got their attention, they seemed surprised we wanted anything from them. What were we paying for? Food to arrive on ridiculously small plates, not to mention carelessly plated; servers too dimwitted to attempt a quality check; and a rushed bill reminding us that we were served by "3 fabulous servers." To conclude: Shame on us for even trying to go out. And shame on them for not buttering our toast. read more

Healthy diner. That's what this place is to me. I've never seen brown rice offered in a diner before. I almost cried. Seriously. Food ordered beef burger on whole wheat bun with side of brown rice and fresh salad - emphasis added. This is about as healthy as it gets for a burger. I did not see fries on the menu - I may have missed it though. Eggs benny with smoked salmon and cream cheese. Everything was well prepared. Nothing processed, except for the bread. Even the ketchup was made in house. Eating a burger with brown rice - I was about to cry the whole time. My daughter was wondering about me. You're probably wondering about me. This place is a drive across town for me. If I'm in the hood and I need food, this is high on my list. One caveat, it's hot in here during the summer. The breakfast here was great. I didn't have to wait for a table on Saturday luckily. The restaurant was very busy though. Lineup at the entrance of the restaurant started around 11am. If you don't want to wait for a table, come here earlier. The interior of the restaurant looked old (not modern) but I enjoyed it especially the food and service. The menu was simple but it included a wide variety of breakfast for customers. The portion of each dish was about the right size. They used free range eggs for bennys and omelettes. The baked potatoes tasted fabulous! The salad on the side was fresh. The servers were friendly and checked on our needs once in a while. They wouldn't rush the customers to leave even though they had finished their meals quickly. The restaurant is located on East Hastings. It sounds like we had to look for parking on this busy street, but no! Just simply looked for parking on other streets or residential areas. The closer you park the higher chance you have to pay for a parking meter. Just drive two blocks away. You can find free parking on the street. My conclusion is that I would love to come here for breakfast or brunch, but not IHOP, Denny's and White Spot. read more

Unknowingly went in a half hour till closing time (14:30) and got rushed like you wouldn't believe while witnessing the same treatment (turning people away at 14:40) to others- even refusing certain orders because they would take "longer than 8 minutes". I received almost no service, menu was left with me for 30 seconds before take my order within a minute of sitting down, and same treatment when I finished eating. I was handed the receipt and machine with no words spoken within a minute of my last bite and honestly tasted awful for how it's portrayed and priced. read more

Another good brunch option in this neighbourhood, just off the intersection of Nanaimo and E Hastings. If you don't want to wait in line at Red Wagon, this is an excellent option. Old school diner feel, with lots of booth seating. With visited around 10am on a Sunday for brunch. I got the tofu and veggie scramble, which is done with a nice sesame sauce and plenty of veggies. Comes with nicely roasted potatoes, a side salad, and choice of bread. Very nice and substantial vegan option at ~$13. Bottomless coffee rounded the experience off nicely. Get your BRUNCH on ! Roundel is still my favourite lunch or brunch meeting spot in the village, even after over 3 years. Roundel is bright and adorable, it's a good atmosphere for having conversation because it's a little more intimate. I like the booths against the wall (except they really need to put some padding back into those cushions--ouch!) The old-school blender for (3 scoop!) milkshakes is a good throw back to the past and the rotating artwork on the walls add a nice touch. Roundel is a style step-up from a typical modern Diner and this is reflected in their menu. The quality of the food is what really makes the place stand out, it's darn good quality eats. Their truly amazing Tofu patty and with a side of free-range eggs (*big yellow yolk), and locally sourced bacon all goes down really easy, even if you're gluten & dairy free. Recently, Erin Ireland blogged about the amazing breakfast she had at the Roundel. Yay for good food! read more

I've only ever gotten the bean, avocado Benny and it is delicious. The atmosphere is quaint and cute and I would recommend it to anyone who's looking for a yummy place to eat some breaky. The only reason I'm giving the place 4 stars instead of 5 is due to my meal not being very hot the last couple times (I'm still eating my entire plate though..) and the service can be a hit and miss depending on how the servers Day is going. Great find for me close to home! Been several times now for breakfast. Always a bit of wait on the weekend for a table cut with plenty to see on East Hastings street time passes quickly. Coffee is strong, service is quick, food is excellent. Plenty of the standard breakfast/brunch choices but always a special and some interesting choices on the menu. Love the marble rye toast served. The kind, caring and ridiculously amazing staff at the Roundel have been the most gracious in handling my requests and food allergies. I have a diary allergy and my favorite breakfast comes with tofu (the veggie scramble). They are always happy to to do no tofu for me and add an egg. Also, they have veggie butter and the of the best homemade jams to go on that toast that you will ever try. Even more brilliant is that not only is their jam homemade, all their condiments are. I was definitely on-the-fence about this place for a few months but after living in the area for about eight months I have to give it the thumbs down. That's not to say it doesn't try, because Oh Lordy does it try...it really, really does, it's just that it seems to try too hard. Instead of being its own breed I sincerely believe that it's attempting to emulate some pre-formulated idea of what a "cool" place should look and operate like. And that's cool, but it just ain't for me. All the fun is gone. As for the food, it's pretty decent with healthy, non-greasy portions but, as an example, instead of giving you just straight strawberry jam for your toast they give "jam preserve" or some shit. C'mon. Nevermind the trying-too-hard-factor, the stuff was actually pretty bland and tasteless. And as a side note: no, I do not want some "vegetable greens" with my breakfast. Aren't "vegetable greens" like bacon's sworn enemy? Save it for lunch and beyond. Okay, now I'm getting all worked up, sorry. Just one last thing, and this really was the kicker. I was running some errands to London Drugs one day and thought I would pop in for a quick coffee...so I sit down in the moderately filled cafe, order a coffee but when the the menu offered I declined since I only wanted the coffee. The owner/manager at this point makes some comment about this being a "restaaaaauuurant" in her faux french lilt essentially implying that I should order more or GTFO. That summed it up for me. On a sunny morning day on our way to the Hastings Horse Race a big group of us left our comfort zone, a.k.a downtown, and decided to give this place a try for brunch as the reviews on Yelp sang its praises. Upon arrival our group had to be split onto two tables as the place is small. It has the feel of a diner but lacks the funky furniture that other diners in town, i.e. Templeton, carry. The service was fast but not as friendly as one would hope from a small neighbourhoody joint. The table we sat on wasn't as clean as it should be so cleanliness of the kitchen was on my mind. Waters are served in Jam jars which seems to be the trend since Tap & Barrel started it last summer. We sat by the window and the occasional breeze helped cool us down, however we were all sweating half way through the meal. I started off with an Americano which tasted familiar as they serve JJ Bean's coffee. For my meal I ordered the Eggs Benny with bacon. The sauce was buttery was not as delicious as I was expecting. The potatoes were cooked to perfection and the home-made ketchup added a nice touch. The side salad was very bland and lacked any spark! Trendy and hip, the Roundel Café is a great example of how the Commercial Drive gentrification process is starting to creep over to East Hastings Street as well. With its savvy vegetarian options and unique additions to the menu, it stands out as coming from the new, younger generation of roadside diners. A perfect example would be the corn flour pancakes, seemingly exotic but just as predictably mediocre as regular pancakes. Basically, this hole in the wall café is nothing special, it's just very image conscious and looking for attention. I'm writing this review to clear up a couple erroneous statements I read about the Roundel on this site. First: The Roundel is not expensive. As a matter of fact, it's extremely affordable. Most breakfasts (and these are full-out breakfasts) cost $8-10. Comparable breakfast restaurants usually charge $12-15. Second: The Roundel is not a wanna-be retro diner. The owners are a married couple who clearly tried to bootstrap when opening up the place. They are far from the artsy, "I'm in the room" personality; rather, they are pretty discreet and more interested in building a solid customer base than being trendy. Third: The Roundel is not a greasy spoon. Their whole cache is that food is naturally healthy and delicious - so don't ruin it. Absolutely nothing they serve there is deep-fried. Breakfast comes with your choice of salad and rice or baked potatoes. Furthermore, they make all of their sauces (ketchup, jam, hot sauce) in house. It's as fresh as it gets. As you can tell, I quite like the Roundel. And if the food doesn't get you, Sergio, the restaurant's main server, will. He is truly a great human. The food could be a little more consistent, but it's always worth the price. read more

I really really want to like Roundel Cafe more. I live super closeby, and it has cute seating and tables, and looks nice from outside. But the food is only mediocre, and never exactly what I was looking for. The owner does come across like a little over the top or pushy, though I don't think she realizes it. The breakfast descriptions sound like they should be amazing, but then are only so-so. The milk shakes were ok, but are generally just bottled flavourings added to a standard shake which is alright I guess, but not five-dollar shake (think Pulp Fiction) worthy. Well. My partner and I headed over here twice. I have no idea why we thought the second time would be better the first. Maybe it's the cute decor. Maybe it's the super friendly and hilarious staff. Maybe it's because the descriptions of the food just sound sooo tasty. Both times we went were disappointing. First time around was beef burger and some other type of sandwich. I don't even remember what - it was that bland. Second time was for breakfast. Gluten free pancakes with blueberries and huevos rancheros. I don't know how you can make huevos rancheros with absolutely no flavour, but I guess you can. If, however, you appreciate a simple well-priced burger that lets a few ingredients become a hand-held taste sensation like Burger Biters does, this is it! The Roundel's locally sourced organic beef patties are hand-made every day, and fit the bun perfectly. They have just the right amount of seasoning and caramelization for a score of 4.25/5. The fresh and lightly toasted whole wheat buns are locally made, very tasty, and hold together from beginning to end (4.4/5). The basic burger comes with a smear of sweet chili mayo, a few thinly sliced red onion rings, lettuce, and tomato. There are about half a dozen add-ons - our blue cheese at $1.95 was fantastic with just the right amount of melt to adhere to the patty. All in all, these simple ingredients came together for fantastic flavour combination (4.25/5). The perfectly roasted potato and yam side with a small tossed salad is a nice change from often questionable fries, but wait... they serve it with their homemade ketchup AND hot sauce on the side, and they are fantastic (4.5/5)! You might seriously consider a side of the roast taters to share they're so good... Overall presentation, taste, and value ($11.95 for the basic burger!) scored 4.6/5. All in, Burger Biters scores the Roundel's burger 4.4/5 - highly recommended without any reservations! This simple burger is very special! A few Crannog and R&B beers are on tap for only $4.50 a sleeve! Always friendly and attentive service in a true diner that has stood the test of time since 1964! read more

If you want to gamble, head straight here. Maybe your luck will hold. Maybe you will glimpse happiness. But I never managed to have decent service and decent food simultaneously. Don't take a date here, or anyone you want to impress or relax with; the experience could turn sour. And fast. I wanted to love the Roundel. I tried. They made it impossible. Menu has some good ideas but due to quality control issues execution doesn't always happen. Ingredients are good and sometimes food is too, but sometimes it's partially burned, or Hollandaise is cold with a skin, or greens are wilted. They can do scrambled eggs fine but don't try for something as far-fetched as over-easy or poached. It's sweltering in here in the summer. As mentioned quality control needs some work; some of it seems to be communications between the kitchen and servers. There were mistakes on my order most of the times I visited (out of perhaps a dozen visits). Not once did I ever get my eggs made to order -- chewy yolks OR clear egg white made it to my plate every time. Broken shells were free :'( Their website says they "lovingly" serve up food -- perhaps they are in denial? Service can be shockingly unpleasant in my experience; I've heard similar complaints from friends. Self-righteous, inattentive, patronizing, insulting. Most atrocities committed by the same particularly legendary server. I don't believe she's the owner as others have assumed. I have no idea what she's doing in the service industry, honestly. She can be faux-maternally charming if you keep your head down and do what you're told. But beware that you don't get flagged as a troublemaker -- by asking again for the side order that never came, or sending back burned food, or any other kind of problem behaviour on your part. I wonder how the other servers feel -- they are generally very nice and helpful. It's a shame. Oh, and ponder wisely before you bring up any issues with your dining experience. Some of my greatest regrets in my brunch life are the few times I foolishly tried to send something back. You can expect any problems you report to be dismissed and denied in short shrift. Clearly you are distorting the truth. Clearly you are wrong. Oh, and any food you have lied about being sub-par, or any food you claim you never received WILL be on your bill. I do miss the brown rice with breakfast though. Someone should liberate it so it can go live in a nice consistent restaurant and be happy. So yeah, I love brunch too much to waste my time at this place any longer -- thank goodness there are better brunch/breakkie options in this neighbourhood like El Pulgarcito, Red Wagon, Scandilicious, and Pelican for dim sum. read more

There feature Bennies never fail to satisfy. It is a good brunch place. Coffee is quality, burgers are meh but the veggie burger is great. Love the open WiFI too. Prices are fair. I came here on a Thursday for their burger special. You get a gourmet organic beef burger, a side of greens, and a beer... all for $11! I'm not a big fan of beer and I was able to substitute mine for one of their tasty milkshakes (they have over 10+ flavours!). I have to agree with some of the other reviewers, this place is definitely a "hole-in-the-wall" but at the same time, there is a bit of a trendy/hip vibe going on. The service, I'm afraid, is a bit hit and miss, depending on who is on duty - and, if you're headed there for breakfast or lunch on a weekend, be prepared to wait. It's probably a good idea to have a back up location planned if you head there hungry, as I've had to wait upwards of half an hour for a seat. The menu has lots of great options for organic and vegetarian diners, and is pretty healthy fare. We just moved into the neughbourhood and are real brunch fans - and roundel met our lofty standards. Imaginative menu, friendly service and natural ingredients made the meal exceptional. Expect large portions that get wrapped up for you in biodegradable containers. The next time we go back we want to try the Hallah toast, or one of the milkshakes from their exhaustive list. I'm surprised I haven't reviewed the Roundel yet. This little Hastings-Sunrise neighbourhood spot is most popular for its brunch menu but, I discovered recently, is open in the evenings as well. How handy! Their tofu burger is pretty good, especially with avocado on it. Better yet is their tofu scramble. They flavour both of their vegan options similarly, but how often are you going to have the burger and the scram in one day? Who ARE you ANYway? The food here can be slightly hit-or-miss. Oh well. Sometimes the scramble is FUCKING AMAZING and sometimes it's mediocre. Much better than most tofu scrambles in town, still. I do like their use of space. They did a lot with not a lot of money and I appreciate that. read more
