Braised Pulled Beef Benny with Havarti and Habanero Hollandaise
    Meaghan C.

Getting brunch in this city can be harder than scoring a second date because everywhere you turn, you can bet your bottom dollar you'll be waiting in line. Some places just feel good inside though and for me, Roundel Cafe is that good place. Must have been fate that I stumbled upon this gem of a cafe because I'll admit I wasn't looking for this place at first but love has a funny way of sneaking up on you when you least expect it. Working in the area that fateful day, I emerged from a dark room mid afternoon in dire need of fresh air and speedy sustenance in the form of soup and bread. Walked into another cafe at first and was denied but told to check out Roundel because their soup is top notch, and boy was it. Since then, I now eagerly look await the days I get to work in the area just for my 30 minutes of daybreak heaven - Soup and Buttered Toast for $6! Today we are not talking about soup and toast though. Today we are talking about their brunch because I do not do brunch on account of having to wait in lines and put on pants too early in the morning, but I do do brunch if it is at Roundel Cafe. The quirky restaurant with its neighbourhood diner vibe was full but we only had a short 5-10 minute wait and what's a small wait if you're in good company sitting outside on their cheery turquoise seats? No wait at all. Full Disclosure - I won a contest with them and had a gift certificate so my meal was free but I would go again and I would pay my own money to boot. Opted for the Fresh Tomato, Brie, and Green Onion Omelette ($12.95) this morn. Simple and fresh, with a small side of pan fried potatoes and two slices of toast - what a civilized affair. Pan potatoes were on the dry side but that also means they didn't taste like a pile of grease. In hindsight, I probably shouldn't have gone for the brie omelette because I don't tend to favour mounds of brie all at once but we all make mistakes and next time i'll just opt for the Ham and Cheddar. Ian dived head first into their Benny of the Day because he lives every day as if it's his last and he could not have been happier. Braised Carne Con Chile (Pulled Beef) with Havarti and Habanaro Hollandaise ($12.95) was straight up his alley with fiery kick from the habaneros cutting the richness from the havarti and hollandaise. Whoever told you this isn't exactly what you were looking for after a HIIT class on a Saturday morning at 11 am was lying to you. Yes - Free for me this time, but would I pay to go again next time? The food is very decent here and the prices competitive but don't get it fooled - the real magic in this place is the service and you just cannot put a price on that. Every time I step in, the ladies welcome me with a chipper greeting and a cheery smile and if I had to liken it to anything, it would be the Cheers of brunch places. Wouldn't you like to get away? Sometimes you just want to go where everybody knows your name. And they're always glad you came.

Healthy diner. That's what this place is to me. I've never seen brown rice offered in a diner before. I almost cried. Seriously. Food ordered beef burger on whole wheat bun with side of brown rice and fresh salad - emphasis added. This is about as healthy as it gets for a burger. I did not see fries on the menu - I may have missed it though. Eggs benny with smoked salmon and cream cheese. Everything was well prepared. Nothing processed, except for the bread. Even the ketchup was made in house. Eating a burger with brown rice - I was about to cry the whole time. My daughter was wondering about me. You're probably wondering about me. This place is a drive across town for me. If I'm in the hood and I need food, this is high on my list. One caveat, it's hot in here during the summer. There is no aircon, only a couple of overhead fans circulating hot air.

I have to give this place 5 stars because of the amazing service (and the hollandaise sauce. Aw man.) Roundel Cafe is great. It is in a small building, however, it feels perfectly cozy when you sit down. I (of course) had the eggs benny and it was really really good. Our server was amazing, super attentive and listed out the specials right when we sat down. I had the sockeye benny and the salmon was fresh and yummy.

The breakfast here was great. I didn't have to wait for a table on Saturday luckily. The restaurant was very busy though. Lineup at the entrance of the restaurant started around 11am. If you don't want to wait for a table, come here earlier. The interior of the restaurant looked old (not modern) but I enjoyed it especially the food and service. The menu was simple but it included a wide variety of breakfast for customers. The portion of each dish was about the right size. They used free range eggs for bennys and omelettes. The baked potatoes tasted fabulous! The salad on the side was fresh. The servers were friendly and checked on our needs once in a while. They wouldn't rush the customers to leave even though they had finished their meals quickly. The restaurant is located on East Hastings. It sounds like we had to look for parking on this busy street, but no! Just simply looked for parking on other streets or residential areas. The closer you park the higher chance you have to pay for a parking meter. Just drive two blocks away. You can find free parking on the street. My conclusion is that I would love to come here for breakfast or brunch, but not IHOP, Denny's and White Spot.

Another good brunch option in this neighbourhood, just off the intersection of Nanaimo and E Hastings. If you don't want to wait in line at Red Wagon, this is an excellent option. Old school diner feel, with lots of booth seating. With visited around 10am on a Sunday for brunch. I got the tofu and veggie scramble, which is done with a nice sesame sauce and plenty of veggies. Comes with nicely roasted potatoes, a side salad, and choice of bread. Very nice and substantial vegan option at ~$13. Bottomless coffee rounded the experience off nicely. Top-notch, friendly and helpful service. We will most certainly be back.

Service was good, friendly. The restaurant is the same as I recall, clean enough. A little cramped and the seating isnt too comfortable. Its really not a good place to hang out for a long time, but rather sit down, eat, and get out type of place. I had the lavender latte and the Tagine this time. Ive had it before and at least its pretty consistent. Ive tried several other things on their menu in the past too, all pretty solid 4/5. Nothing standout as so amazing to deserve 5 stars, but consistent and tasty. I did have a reservation which they charge $10/person for, purely for donation to a charity and does not contribute to your meal at all, and also nonrefundable. While I find this somewhat annoying, I dont blame them for doing this from a business standpoint. They always have a lineup so there is no shortage of customers for them. There is no reason they need to deal with the headache of a ton of reservations. On the flip side, they honoured my reservation in a very timely fashion and I bypassed the line, so props to them for doing that part right. If you have to park, then you may find street metered parking or use one of the nearby paid lots.

I decided on the el camino breakfast poutine and subbed out the pork carnitas for hardwood smoked bacon and it was INCREDIBLE! The amount of flavor and variety of flavors was absolutely delicious. I find that even though I am back home now, I still think about having that breakfast poutine. It was a nice mix of sweet, spicy, and savory between the roasted pineapple, charred tomato salsa, pickled jalapeños, and salsa verde. The bacon and potatoes were nice and crispy too! Not only will you find the best food here, but the views are unmatched too. If you get there early, you can enjoy your breakfast by the window or on the patio overlooking the marina. I was meeting a friend here yesterday who's visiting from California, and when deciding on a meeting place, we realized a bunch of the Gastown coffee roaster places were closed on Sunday, so I mentioned Breka , knowing it was opened 24/7. (LOVE this!). Plus, this site is close to Waterfront Station, and my friend had a busy day planned, taking the Seabus to N.Van and doing a lot of sightseeing. So this Breka was perfect. I was there early at 10 am-ish, and from the outset, I was impressed: exposed brick wall, long counter and display case, fully stocked with the most beautiful pastries and tarts and cakes, and lovely looking sandwiches, too....Just lovely. I ordered a tea from the guy taking the orders. At the check-out, the woman working the cashier was the most unfriendly, aloof person I have ever encountered at a Breka. She was downright dour. Never looked up, never smiled, said I owed X for the tea I ordered, gave me a receipt and said I was "number 3", no "thank you" (despite my saying thanks!), nothing. She looked really unhappy and bothered to be there. (I sat at a nearby table, waiting for my number to be called. I saw her interactions with all the people behind me - and there were quite a few, as it got suddenly busy in the cafe. She was cold and unfriendly to everyone in line as she rang them all up. These are mostly tourists! Why have a dour, borderline-hostile woman at the check-out counter of a busy cafe in a touristy part of our city? I just don't get it). Anyhow, I waited 10 minutes to hear my number called, but I never heard it. I walked up to the take-out area and there was my tea, on a receipt that said "number 3". Did they call out my number? I honestly don't know. I was seated at a table a few feet from the area and listening for my number and I didn't hear it called. I was not impressed with this set-up. Not at all. My friend arrived and got a chocolate concoction which looked amazing, and he loved it, so there's that. I still love Brekas but I probably won't return to this site. Between the cold experience at the cash and the prolonged waiting for my order (a cup of tea!), and not being sure if my order number was ever called, it just all left me with a bitter taste in my mouth.

But first, the food - I ordered scrambled eggs, chicken apple sausage and paid an extra $1 for truffled lemon potatoes. The verdict? 4 out of 5. I'd ordered the eggs "very soft" and they verged on medium-firm. They still tasted good. I'll gladly pay extra for the truffled potatoes next time. My husband ordered the salmon avocado benny. While he loved the tomato soup he chose on the side, he was less enamoured by the benny itself. I had a taste and was underwhelmed by a forkful of overripe avocado and slightly fishy-tasting salmon. We finished with an order of beignets which despite being freshly-fried, were bland; although the accompanying strawberry sauce was deliciously tangy-sweet. Onto the service. This place spins like a top, and I mean that in a good way. Although we came at a peak time, all front of the house staff we encountered -- from the hostess to our bubbly server, to the smooth manager -- struck a perfect balance of being in flow, working flawlessly together, and maintaining light conversation with us. Exemplary. 5 stars out of 5.

We were having gorgeous weather in Vancouver so we decided to eat on the covered patio. The place is pretty cozy, but was only moderately busy when we went. They have a pretty good menu with lots a Benedict's and a build your own breakfast option that seemed pretty nice. I took the recommendation from our server and got the bacon benny. It did not disappoint. I think I have recently discovered that I love poached eggs and these were perfect. The yolk was nice and runny and the white was firm but not hard. I like to cut in to my egg and have it run down and get messy on the plate. The hollandaise was excellent. So many breakfast places will serve it broken, but not here. It had the perfect amount of lemon, butter ratio for my taste and I really enjoyed it. The bacon was good, not to salty, and the english muffin was, well, an English muffin from a package that they toasted and out on the plate. I did splurge and paid the extra dollar for the truffle potatoes and they were very good. I love truffle oil on potatoes so I am a sucker for it whenever its on a menu. You just cant mess it up. Fried potatoes, truffle oil, and a lemon squeeze to bring it all together. My wife got the brunch burger and she loved it. It was a messy breakfast burger that a lot of places have but this one was done right. A poached oozy egg, on a burger patty with american cheese, the best burger cheese in my opinion, bacon, hollandaise and arugula on a brioche bun! It came with tater tots and they were nice and crispy just like she likes them. Well, why didn't I give it five stars you may be asking? Great question. Here it is, each plate came with a side that was just awful. Mine had some "fresh" fruit that nearly made me laugh. It consisted of the saddest, limpest piece of watermelon I have ever seen this side of a trash can. I also had an old crusty orange wedge and a single grape. My wife got a slimy side salad that I think was holding on for dear life. Both, we deemed inedible and moved on immediately. I think there is a rule, or at least there should be one, in restaurants that if you wouldn't eat it then don't serve it. There might be another one that says if you eat rotten food maybe get a different job and see rule one. Overall, we liked the place and would go back. We would just avoid the salads and fresh fruit and stick to the food they cook.
