We are so thrilled to have found Roux in the Carmel Valley. We had a party of 20 for dinner out on their charming patio to kick off our son's wedding weekend. Roux did not disappoint! We were greeted by both owners, Fabrice and Jennifer Roux, as well as 2 servers pouring sparkling wine. For large parties they have a few different menu packages to preselect prior to your event and served family style. There was more than enough incredibly delicious food! Their wait staff is attentive and very knowledgeable about their extensive wine list. We can't wait to come back and will tell our family and friends who weren't able to be there that night. We went here for Mother's Day and it was so delicious!! The food was phenomenal. The fettuccine was very spring forward and light, which I loved. Sadly, I have to leave a rare review. Carmel Valley is a little rustic, given, but this was a little too much. It was a Monday night, memorial day, so the weekend had died down, and I suppose they had minimal staffing. One very good, but strained server was taking care of everybody in the restaurant. The dog policy benefited us, because we have a well trained dog on a leash. However, another party came with their dog who was running all around, trying to take our dog food and water and just a complete disruption to the entire restaurant. On top of that, sadly, the food was so below par, I was absolutely shocked. My seafood didn't taste like anything, the pasta sauce, frankly, tasted like canned kid spaghetti and my wife's food came out raw, so I think they ended up zapping it in the microwave and it tasted just like that. Pretty expensive meal for a very very unsatisfying and disappointing experience. I probably won't be giving them another try. read more

One of the worst dining experiences I've ever had. We were ignored as soon as we arrived at the door, and gruffly told "cash only" (and Venmo and Zelle). Totally fine, we can do that, but if you don't want us to sit down, this would be the time to say something! After our waitress took our order (same waitress who ignored us) after another couple who arrived after us, she arrived with one soup. We'd ordered two. No big deal; we'll share. Then she brought a pasta main with fettuccine instead of the gnocchi that was clearly listed on the menu. When we asked about it, she said they ran out of gnocchi (fine, but why don't you tell us first?), and that everyone usually orders the dish with fettuccine (not sure how if not listed on menu). We taste it -- just terrible and so salty. We ask for the check, get a bill, pay the bill, and are overcharged. When we ask, the waitress gives us a different price than listed on the menu. What a real shame. I'm hopeful we just had a terrible experience, but want others to be aware. read more

Came here for a surprise birthday party with 20+ people and was blown away! The owner Jennifer was amazing, super accommodating and so friendly! She even filmed the very surprised birthday girl's reaction when she walked in. Usually when you have a party that large service lacks but not here! We had a set menu served family style. The appetizers were all amazing; roasted potatoes, yuca fries and delicious hummus with super fresh vegetables. Next came a salad that I wasn't crazy about but others enjoyed it. The two main dishes were both out of this world. There was a steak and salmon option. The steak was cooked perfectly with an awesome sauce. The salmon was so buttery and served with a delicious purred cauliflower base. We brought our own cake for dessert and they cut and served it to us. On top of everything it was super affordable for the quality of the food and service. I can't wait to come back and try more of the amazing food! read more

If that is what you have in mind, don't eat here, that is, unless you want to remind your server to remember your orders, over and over again. Asking for basic things... When the food did make it out, it was decent, but reminded me of a suburb in Dallas Texas, like an elevated Olive Garden... All of this and the only acknowledgement was that they were short staffed. No awareness from the manager. And they had no problem bringing the bill on time. Nothing was comped. We sure did laugh though at how bad the service was. The service was great, the food was excellent! The only reason I'm giving this place 1 star is because this establishment did not accept credit or debit cards. The only form of acceptable payment was through Venmo, cash, or personal check - ridiculous!! My husband and I were not warned ahead of time about this policy. We barely had enough cash to pay for our dinner. We insisted to the wait staff that we wanted them to get a good tip, so we paid exact cash to the penny but, separated the cash for them. We believe the owner is greedy and is using the Covid-19 pandemic as an excuse to avoid paying fees on credit card transactions! The other nearby restaurant, Cafe Rustica, accepted our credit card the next evening for dinner, no problem We were so disappointed by this outrageous policy. This restuarant is a must! Their outside area is the cutest setup ever. Their staff was so sweet and helpful in every way. We ordered a salad and opted for the Paella for 2, which was absolutely delicious (see photo), and had a dessert. My sangria was equally delicious and we saw the chef milling about inside, which is always nice to know that they are actively involved. Clint Eastwood dined at the table next to us on this particular night, which was also a nice little treat :) All in all, we loved this place and will definitely be back the next time we are in the area. read more

What a find!! A small shop (among many) owner recommended that we try this place out and we are so glad that we did. Although it was overcast, the weather was perfect to sit outside. They had an open fire table and fire lamp to keep us warm. Being the polar bear that I am, I sat as far away from the fire as possible... They have bottomless mimosas for $15/person. Trust me when I say they are bottomless! The server we had plus one of the owners was on top of their pouring game. We started with the Honduran yucca fries with chipotle aioli. I could've ordered 2-3 more of these for my meal. They were incredible!! Lightly fried, hot, and the spice to go with it in the aioli. We decided to share a meal. The decision was tough... There were 3-4 plates that we went back and forth on for a good 15 minutes. We picked the open faced grilled steak and egg sandwich with chive goat cheese cream. O-M-G... The egg was cooked perfectly and, as the yolk broke, it spread right over the deliciously seared steak. it was cooked to perfection. Yes, perfect is the word of the review. There really is no other way to describe this place. The sandwich also came with a side salad. Simple, yet delicious. Their website doesn't showcase the dessert menu, which I like for the element of surprise. We had either the Panna Cotta or cheesecake with a berry puree on top. Whichever dessert we had, it was amazing. I clearly remember that puree for a reason! Great and friendly staff made for a very memorable meal. A must go-to spot. read more

Witnessed the most disgusting display of customer service I have ever seen last night. The owner and her staff completely belittled a group of girls and made the most inappropriate comments to them. I overheard the owner telling one of the girls "Look at how you're dressed." And then went on to tell her how she is under qualified to be there and mentioned that this place is not The Olive Garden. My only conclusion is that this restaurant will discriminate against their costumers based on looks and race. I will never recommend this place nor will I ever be returning here. read more

Dare I say my new fav restaurant in Carmel? Quaint/charming ambiance on outdoor patio and inside dining room. We did a sizable sampling of their small plates and an entree. Everything was delish! With lovely presentation. Fun wine list with many choices, and a very reasonable markup. And last, but definitely not least - amazing service. Very helpful during our dining experience. And VERY accommodating to us running 1/2 hour late for our res (with was the last seating). They essentially kept the ovens on for us. My only regret is that we dined here on our last night - otherwise we would have been back for a second evening! And they are dog friendly so extra bonus! read more

Like something you'd find in a cheap grocery store. My guy had a dry hamburger... no fruit available, so cold fries were on the side. Can't recommend Roux enough. Chef Fabrice marries French cuisine with California creativity in perfect harmony. Dining room feels like eating in a Frank Lloyd Wright living room, and the patio is sunny with a lazy garden vibe. Never had anything here I didn't love. The pulled pork sandwich is excellent, and the marinated chicken sandwich annihilated my taste buds. If you want a good grilled chicken sandwich, this is the best place to go. Roux pays attention to detail. Every element of the sandwich was well thought out and carefully prepared. The chicken is grilled and tender. The tomatoes are cut appropriately, so you can taste them but they do not overpower. The bacon is probably smoked. It's nice and thick too. I'm not sure what kind of cheese is used, but it only adds and nothing takes over. Everything is resting between two brioche buns smothered in pesto. It's beautiful. Go get one. read more

I went on the Monterey Wine Trolly to Carmel Valley this past weekend where the PRE PAID lunch is hosted by this restaurant, and so this happened... Set the scene: #1. They already have your money #2. They know how many on the Trolly are coming (between 11a & 2p) #3. The menu is fixed so they can food prep ahead of time So why did it take ONE HOUR AND 15 MINUTES for them to bring some wilted lettuce with 4 shrimp on it? When I asked 4 times to speak to the manager no one ever came to the table I stayed for over 2 hours & as I watched 4 tables get served that arrived after me I took lots of pictures for sharing! And the kicker is I am a local who grew up here and have NEVER been treated SO RUDLY in my 40 years on this peninsula! As I visited the Wine tasting rooms and many of my friends who own or run them I learned a lot more about this woman and this restaurant, they are crooks! They should be ashamed of themselves. I will be sharing my experience with everyone, the locals, tourists, and many of my friends that come here for the great restaurant and wine tasting experience, you won't get it at ROUX! read more

Wow! I can't believe how much they've transformed the restaurant from the old one!! It looks like they were on restaurant makeover. The new owners are clearly more seasoned in the industry and it shows from the moment you're greeted, until the moment you leave with a full tummy. I came with a group of 6 for brunch, so we were able to sample quite a bit from the menu. We ordered the peach and orange mimosas. They're so tasty! So good with peach and orange. It almost tastes like some exotic tropical fruit....ok, so for the food, we started with the beignets. Let me tell you, I've been to Cafe Du Monde....and these are WAY better! They're light, fluffy, warm and come with a great lemon curd and homemade chocolate sauce. I'm excited to try their larger version they offer in the mornings with coffee. Along with the beignets, we tried the blood sausage (bf said it was the best he's had in his whole life), sliders, wild boar, yucca fries, deviled eggs. Everything was a hit! For our entrees, we ordered the crab beignedic. Sooo good! I was surprised it came with some bacon on the side. The bacon was really, really good! It was a thicker cut that still has some of the loin attached to it. we also ordered some of the different scrambles. They're French style, so not like the type you see at the diners. I've seen a video of this type being made. It's a longer process, but the result is heavenly! I would recommend with truffles or lobster. Last but not least, desserts. We ordered one of everything! our favorites were the fried Oreos and the buttermilk panna cotta. After my brunch experience, I'm really excited about coming back on a warm day to have drinks on their patio or to just come back for dinner. It's so nice to see a change from the outdated American "European" menus that seems dominate in CV. I've had opportunities to try just about all of the other restaurants in the area and Roux stands out! They're in a different league! I hope the other restaurants get inspired and follow his lead, so I can selfishly have more options.....until then, you can find me at Roux. read more

Wow very impressed by my first dining experience at the new French eatery in C.V. Village. What I really like about this place is its something very different and much needed in the Village. Although the Village has a lot of great little spots to eat at this one stands on its own. We went here for my 31st birthday dinner which was perfect for a special occasion, we got seated in the private room in the back and sat at a gorgeous redwood table that fit 8 of us very comfortably. The chef came and introduced himself, very friendly and outgoing guy who has a great story as to how he finally is living the dream by opening up his very own restaurant (formerly worked in Paris, Michelin star chef). They have an excellent wine list and we went with two different Magnum sized bottles-one French and one Italian from his private collection, both were incredible. We shared two of their chefs plate assorted appetizers for the table that had a variety of small and delicious tapa style foods and an order of the Yuka fries and Fingerling potatoes. We were sort of confused as one was super thick (assumed this was the fingerling potatoes but was told these were the Yuka fries) so long story short I think the waitress mixed up the names as when my Aunt ordered another side of the ones she thought were the skinnier ones for her mini burger entree the thick ones came out, no big deal as they quickly switched them out for what she wanted. I shared the Paella with my husband, it was delicious, only problem was we were so full we couldn't finish it and accidentally left our leftovers at the restaurant (major bummer)! We ended the night with two desserts, forgetting what one was called but they were basically like mini cream puffs with three different flavors which were all really good and then last but not least the fried oreos-wow talk about fried bad goodness, so good it left most of us speechless and trying to figure out how we could recreate these. Not sure why there are so many rave reviews. I dined here with my husband last night and was not impressed. First off, they advertise themselves as French when it's really New American. Most dishes would not be found in a French restaurant. We started with the yucca fries. $6.50 for 6 fries. The chipotle aioli dipping sauce tasted like it was not house made and tasted exactly like a sauce from a pub in Seattle where I live. Truffle devil eggs with salmon roe: could not taste anything other than the ranch used to mix the filling. No roe flavor and definitely no truffle oil could be tasted. $11 for 6 tiny eggs (they were not large eggs) that tasted like something from the Safeway deli. Foie gras. First time in my life I disliked foie gras. It's my favorite food but the foie gras parfait tasted like cheese! Like cheap cheddar EZ Cheese from a can. No lie. The color was literally orange when it should've been more of a taupe color. I couldn't finish it. And it was served with soft brioche slices that, when I attempted to spread the parfait, would crumble in my hands. Very strange. The braised beef risotto was the best dish but the rice was undercooked. It's supposed to be between al dente and mushy, but was definitely just al dente. Dessert was okay. But the plate was just out of the dishwasher and warm so the ice cream melted very quickly. Should have been served on chilled plates. Wtf? Overall, if the restaurant was in some podunk town I would be forgiving. But because it is in the Bay Area with dozens of Michelin star restaurants nearby, it should know better and I expected a lot more. 3 stars. read more

This restaurant was phenomenal. I had the short rib risotto, which was so tender and delicious. The serving of short rib was also extremely generous. My friend had the vegetarian pasta and OMG, it almost made me have food envy. It was the right amount of buttery, vegetable goodness. I wish Yelp would let you do half stars, because the only reason I am docking from the score is due to the service. Although our waitress was great, the appetizers came out about 2 mins after ordering, before the wine even was poured. It was too fast and makes you think it was pre-made for someone else. Additionally, one of the servers who was pouring water, came over and made an off, uncomfortable comment. I highly recommend this place, and probably one of the best restaurants we ate at in the Valley! read more

We were excited to eat here, so when my brother and sister in law visited we went there for dinner. First, trying to make reservation no one picked up the phone. We were unable to get reservation online either. We decided to walk in and ask. A young lady greeted me and confirmed they had a table for four that we could be seated at. Since the time was 8:30 PM, my wife and I went for small plates. Our guests, ordered full plate meals, and Yuka fries for appetizers. After waiting half hour my order of Mussels showed up without Pome Frit. My wife's crab cake small plate also showed up , but not my brothers appetizers. We informed the waiter and he said he will correct the problem. 15 minutes later the Yuca fries shows up and now it has been 45 minutes since we were seated and no sign of our guests food. The owner or chef greeted most tables but continued to stare our way and never came to apologize. I know mistake happens, but getting treated like we had plague didn't make us feel any better. Objectively looking back, the food was good, but limited menu and bad service made it a one star! I hope they improve so I can change my rating ! Prices are more expensive than expected . Second visit and very much wanted to like this addition to the village. Pretty room, had private dining room for 10 twice. First visit was sampling of many tapas. Liked truffle deviled eggs and Brussel sprouts, everything else, including salads were very bland with little prominent taste. Second visit, reserved salmon entrees, had salads, but at 7, all Brussel sprouts sold out. Salmon promised wild, but had little taste or texture. Well cooked, but again, bland. Conclusion, creative menu, and ambitious menu, but skill with spices, dressings, and flavor missing. read more

My husband and I went here to celebrate our wedding anniversary, the owners have done a magnificent job with the decor, this restaurant is beautiful and the food is delicious!! We had the fingerling potatoes and the Dino kale for an appetizer,,, it was scrumptious! For dinner we split the paella, it does take 30 minutes to cook, and we were told of the wait but we enjoyed every minute of the wait as well as the dish itself. I would highly recommend the Roux, great place, excellent service and fantastic food! This will be such a great addition to our village! read more

Nice addition to Carmel Valley Village. The food is prepared nicely, with great flavors and presentation. Some of the small bites are very nicely done too. We really enjoyed the chorizo corn dogs and the truffled deviled eggs. We've also tried the Berkshire Organic Pork Aumônière, but $11.50 for two little bites seems pretty excessive. For an entrée, I would recommend the paella. This dish is big enough for two people to share, and pretty reasonably priced at $43 considering all the great ingredients (Saffron-infused Spanish rice, Gambas (prawns), calamari, chicken, pork chorizo, mussels, bay scallops, pequillo peppers ). We've also had the short rib risotto, which was perfectly cooked and quite delicious. Overall, the restaurant is very good, but a bit on the spendy side. The wine menu offers lots of choices, but $15 for a glass of Bernardus Pinot Noir is too much; they should offer some more wines by-the-glass in the $7-10 range. read more

Awesome restaurant! We came here three times during our trip to Carmel Valley. Everyone, servers, bussers, etc. were SUPER FRIENDLY. The chef/owner's wife Jenn was so nice. The crab cakes with chipotle aioli were perfection. Scallops were cooked properly here (if you like scallops you know what I mean), and they were served with a sublime white corn polenta. Loved the salad with 25year balsamic and house made Burratta. Roux made such a good first impression at dinner that we came back the next day for yummy beignets and good coffee(even the coffee snob in our group thought it was great). We walked around town looking for a place for breakfast for a while and ended up deciding that Roux was the best option; we were very happy with our choice. read more
