Their wine is good, I loved the Chardonnay. We ordered crab cake and it was just average. I didn't like the excessive amount of carrot in it! We asked for bread three times and they finally told us they are short on bread in kitchen and they can't offer it. At some point another server ended up bringing us some bread to go along with our order of muscles which was really good. The worst part however was the desert. We exactly waited 16min between our dinner and the desert. They kept telling us sorry for the wait and that they are trying to make a fresh crepe and blah blah. And honestly it wasnt worth it at all. Even if they offer it for free I wouldn't get it next time. We were excited about the beignets and they told us we can come back at 8am and have them fresh for breakfast. That's exactly what we did. We came back at 8:30 the next day and they were surprised that we had shown up at that time for beignet. They rushed to a near by place to pick up the beignets. I paid ~$20 for 6 beignets and all I got was 7/11 quality donuts and nothing like NOLA quality beignets. Very disappointed!!! Don't try the beignets. Refer to pics. read more

Otherwise, everyone enjoyed their food. However two of the diners would have preferred more seasoning (at least more salt and pepper) on their country potatoes and eggs. This was a 4.5 NYE dinner! Charming interior, great service and the food was exceptional. We ordered the French Onion Soup which was sooo good on a very stormy night. It was cheesy, bready, beefy, oniony goodness. 5 stars! For entrees we had the Beef Short Rib with a cauliflower risotto (it had pork belly in it!) which was out of this world. Only critique is that we wish it had a bit more of the lovely Cabernet sauce on top of the meat. Our other entree was the Duck Breast with sautéed potatoes and tomatoes... cooked perfectly and so well seasoned. It's hard to find duck breast and have it cooked medium rare like it should be. For dessert we had the Crème Brûlée which was the only disappointment of the evening. The texture was slightly off and it was all around just kind of meh. But, we managed to eat it all. I have to say, the deep fried Oreos I saw others enjoying looked great! Overall, ROUX is a lovely spot for thoughtful, tasty food in Carmel Valley. Perfection from beginning to end. Every bite of every dish was delicious. Chorizo corn dogs were bite size and so flavorful. Crab cakes with the crispiest crust I have every eaten! Onion soup..huge bowl and still wanted more. My filet mignon was cooked med-rare & perfection. Meyer lemon cheesecake was light and fluffy. I chose The restaurant for its unique atmosphere and menu choices. Was not disappointed. You could tell everyone around us was also enjoying their food by the Ohhh's and ahhh's!! Had our rehearsal dinner at Roux in 2023. Ruben was helpful and responsive from the beginning, and he and his dad were incredibly accommodating. The food was INCREDIBLE - the Harris ranch bolognese in particular blew my mind! Mary's chicken was also really delicious. We all had a lovely time, food was great and the location was super cute. Everyone was commenting on how great the food was after! And it was very reasonably priced. Highly recommend Roux for a casual meal or an event! Tasty or Wastey? Totally Tasty!!! To those of you that crave a relaxing outdoor atmosphere and great service, then you have to try this place. My favorite are there bacon and Brussels sprouts. They also have a great steak salad. Priced reasonable. The drive through Carmel valley is beautiful, relaxing. Came with my family a party of 6 to celebrate my sons 21st birthday. We let the waiters know it was a special occasion. The service was good no complaints there. However the food we ordered, some dishes were better than others. My son's 12 oz NY steak had a huge amount of fat on it. My daughter in law didn't like the calamari in her seafood pasta. Very chewy. Our duck entree was good. Left us a little hungry afterwards. With 2 small pieces of duck. Had to make a stop on the way home for our 2 hour drive. We were a little surprised when no special dessert was brought out for the birthday boy. After spending over $400 you would think they could bring out a dessert with a candle. Like most restaurants do for a nice gesture. Nope nada. Also, when they brought out the check gratuity was included on the total amount! From experience. You never tip on total amount. We came on a Monday to celebrate my wife's Birthday. It appeared to be fairly slow, which made it even better. Kylie was our amazing waitress and did a great job at making sure we were having a great experience. This area and Roux are without a doubt, hidden gems that need to be visited. I only have one warning for visitors. Just because you were able to get a ride to the restaurant, does NOT mean you will get a ride back. We were staying up in Carmel by the Sea and took a Lyft. When it came time to leave, we couldn't get a Lyft, Uber or Taxi. Luckily, we were able to find a very kind young lady that gave us a ride back up our AirBnB. My boyfriend and I were looking for a nice place to eat lunch before we went wine tasting and we decided to try out ROUX. We went on a Friday afternoon and there wasn't much parking. There is one parking lot but it was all full, and only limited street parking. We didn't have a reservation but were seated immediately on the outdoor patio. Our server was very attentive and we got our drinks quickly (water and white/red sangrias). One note on the water: they offer still water (bottled Voss water, $7 a pop), sparkling water and tap water. If we had known initially, we would have gone with the tap water instead of being charged a bunch for overpriced water. The sangrias are on point! I especially loved the white sangria, it was light, refreshing and very tasty. The red sangria was also good, it had more body and had an interesting cinnamon-y finish that I felt ambivalent about. I preferred the white over the red though. Yelp doesn't give half ratings, but I'd give my experience at ROUX a 3.5 The main thing keeping me from giving ROUX four stars or more was the long wait times. Although we were seated immediately and received our drinks quickly, the rest of our meal came very slowly. Appetizer came out at a reasonable time but we waited for a long time for our main dishes and dessert to come out. We spent over 2 hours at the restaurant, most of it waiting. I noticed that patrons who came later than us were served much more quickly than we were. Just an observation, not sure what was the cause of our long wait times, but sitting for 20 minutes for our dessert seemed a bit excessive. On to the food! We had the steamed salt spring island mussels for an appetizer. They were very well cooked and the sauce was delicious. The onion and fennel complemented the dish very well. My boyfriend ordered the open faced grilled steak and egg sandwich and I ordered the house made linguini. Although my boyfriend requested his steak be done medium-rare, it was a little overcooked, but very flavorful. The salad that came with his dish was good, I liked the dressing. I loved my dish, the pasta was cooked perfectly and the sauce was flavorful and light. It had a creamy yet zesty flavor. I would definitely recommend the linguini. Yum. For dessert, we ordered the crepes. The vanila ice cream that accompanied the dish was very measly. Maybe half the size of a golfball for an entire dish of crepes. I wish we had gotten an actual scoop of ice cream! The crepes themselves were very good, nice and fluffy. Despite being slow, service was excellent and the food was delicious. The good news is that unlike some of the other businesses in the area, Roux uses good wine glasses and glasses that are appropriate for the varietal of wine you are drinking. Therefore, the wine is going to taste the way it should taste. The side of Brussels sprouts we ordered were crispy and delicious. Additionally, our server was attentive and provided good service. The bad news was our entrees took forever to arrive. The steak we ordered was served cold and the wine sauce was congealed on top. Although it was cold, it was cooked to the wellness ordered and it was well seasoned. On the other side of the spectrum, the chicken we ordered was piping hot, over cooked, and tough. We visited Roux on a Monday night and the restaurant was not overly busy, so I'm not sure what went wrong. If in the area again I will probably give it another shot. read more

The author of the menu deserves an award, as it implies bold, developed flavors abound with every dish. Regrettably, nothing could be further from the truth. The heirloom tomato salad, roasted lobster fettuccine and black pepper crusted maple leaf duck were bland, un(der)seasoned and for all intents and purposes, completely flavorless. When I closed my eyes I had absolutely no idea what I was eating. Not bad, disgusting or uneatable, just underwhelming and lacking any, literally any of the flavors described on the menu. Food: 2-stars Service, exceptional overall! Our hostess/waitress was thoughtful, pleasant and attentive. I would hire her in a heartbeat. However, the timing of food out of the kitchen was abysmal. Service: waitress 4.5-stars/Kitchen: 1-star Location and vibe, great! A clean, cozy spot with a ton of potential. Ambience: 4-stars Overall rating, 3-stars, only achieved by ignoring the food. Great restaurant with a wide variety of dishes. They are Venmo/cash only at the moment. I called for a reservation at 7pm on new year's and there was plenty of seating. We had a table near the fire place and had plenty of dishes to choose from. They have tapas style small plates,soup, salad, a dish of the day which happened to be pan seared halibut and entrees. We ended up going with drinks and entrees only. I ordered the fresh cut fettuccine because I love fresh pasta. They had a few options with seafood, lobster, and choice of pasta included fettuccine and gnocchi when I went. My dish was vegetarian and very tasty. Portions may be a little small so you can order multiple dishes to share. My husband was happy with his short ribs. I had a bite and it was melt in your mouth delicious, very well seasoned. I have been coming here for years to get the seafood pasta and it's always been great. I just had that same seafood pasta and it was terrible. I understand covid has been tough and there's a major kitchen labor shortage in California but my seafood pasta was absolutely awful. I am literally listening to my girlfriend (who had the salmon) gag in the bathroom right now. There is no way this is the same person cooking in the kitchen lol! I don't feel great about leaving such a negative review but honestly...this is what happened/what is actually happening right now. I called the restaurant before writing this because sometimes things happen, nobody answered even though they are still open. My girlfriend and I are really surprised/disappointed. This restaurant was great. I booked it for my girlfriend's dinner. It was a colder night and sitting outside to eat always sucks but they did a great job with it all. They placed us close to a fire pit and brought in an additional portable fire pit next to her to keep us (especially her) warm. I didn't see too many restaurants that would fit the bill for a good birthday dinner that offered vegan options and was a bit scared we would be stuck with 2 menu items. After visiting Patricia Qualls' art gallery, we strolled down to Roux looking to continue our conversations and find a little afternoon treat! The moment we walked into the elegantly rustic room, we were welcomed by a charming European Market tabletop presentation of their beignet options! SOLD! They had like 5 different flavors, and I'm sorry I didn't list them all here, but I was too busy eating mine to remember the rest. Our group settled on a trio (that are not filled and come with lemon curd and warmed chocolate - or was it nutella?!). These were halfway closer to cake doughnuts than other super light air-filled beignets I've tried elsewhere. But I loved that these were dusted with granulated sugar because it sticks to the beignet more and falls on my (usually black) clothing less. We also ordered some individual filled beignets to sample - the hazelnut and again lemon curd. I loved the contrast of the soft creamy filling to the slightly more textured beignet. While we were eating our dessert, we witnessed the glory of their Ahi Tuna Tartare, Niman Ranch Organic Beef Mini-Sliders, and their Sauteed Gambas with Brandy! Believe me, we asked the server as he went by because everything looked and smelled SO GOOD! Had we not just filled up on beignets, perhaps we'd have stayed and talked ourselves into eating!. i love the rustic feel that fits in peacefully among the trees in the Carmel Valley. Beautiful day, out door seating, a bit understaffed but good service, apps were good, the BLAT, was good and the skirt steak sandwich was very good, fries were a bit less than warm but not cold, and tasty. The wines were good, although they ran out of the champagne we were drinking, but they comped the last 2/3 of a glass. lol the only down side and certainly not the restaurants fault, we were seated at the same time as a party of twelve. The apps came out quickly but the food then took awhile longer than I would have liked optimally. As mentioned, they seemed a bit understaffed in the kitchen for a Mother's Day. Came here for a Sunday dinner. My in laws got the paella which I thought wasn't good. The rice tasted salty and the chicken super dry. Got the duck entree which was very good. My kids got the truffle pasta which they liked. Would probably not come back though given there were more poor dishes than good. We also got charged a 21% service fee automatically not sure if it was because we had a party of 6 but would have been nice to be told that. Plus when restaurants do that isn't it typically 18%?
