One of the best meals I have ever had. We started with the heirloom tomato gazpacho and the grilled artichoke. Both were delicious. I don't generally like gazpacho and I LOVED this one. For entrees we had the ravioli and the black truffle fettuccine. Do yourself a favor and try at least one of these amazing pasta dishes. Our server was Brandon. He couldn't have been nicer! He was extremely knowledgeable and pleasant. It was an added bonus to be able to spend time and chat a bit with him. They only accept Venmo and cash, so come prepared. Yummy! And, such great people. We've known Gabby from a former Carmel restaurant Club Jalapeño. And just today met her husband Arturo. Great group of folks who will take great care of you--while serving some really good food. We started with a red wine-based Sangria. Really delicious and fresh. Enjoyed the crab cakes, deviled eggs, lemon browned butter kale and mushroom raviolis and for good measure, the yucca fries with chipotle sauce. All very good. We were not all that hungry but if we would have been, many other very appetizing items in the menu would have been ordered and enjoyed. The hostess was rude. We made a reservation for 4 pm for three people. I mentioned we with with two small dogs. When we arrived, the hostess argued about moving two tables together so we could sit on a bench which made it easier to place the dogs between us and the table was in the shade. She finally agreed after I said we were leaving but continued to be rude. No one else came to the restaurant until after 5 pm. The place was completely empty. When a couple came in a little after 5, she tried to seat them at a table, but the man asked if they could move into the back section. She rolled her eyes and huffed as though it was a big problem, and again acting rude, then moved their silverware to the area where they wanted to sit. The restaurant was still very empty. The waiter was great and provided very good service. The food was not as good as the last time we ate there. We ordered paella at about 4:10, it wasn't served until after 5 and it was over cooked. The soup and salad were good. However after the treatment by hostess and the quality of food not being that great, we won't be going back. At a little after 6 when we left, there was only one more table occupied and the place was otherwise empty. Don't not understand why the hostess would be so rude when the place is empty. We ate here early on a Sunday for dinner. We sat on the patio. We had the short rib, brussel sprouts, crab cakes, french fries, and fried oreos. The food was very good but the atmosphere was not so good. I was surprised that a restaurant with such good food and such a unique menu would leave the physical environment so plain and lacking ambience. It felt like a cheap cafe. The hostess was going to seat us right next to (and very close to) the only other party in the whole outdoor area, until I asked her to put us in a different area! Who does that??? No flowers, colors, decoration - just plain tables and chairs in a plain area. I looked inside and it looked just as plain in there. Oh well. I would not go out of my way to eat here again, but if you are in the area anyway, the food is very good. Bring your own ambience! read more

This small restaurant about 15 miles from Carmel down a long winding road had about 4 tables occupied the night we dined there. There were three employees total: a hostess/waitress and two men in the kitchen. Service was on the slow side. It was over 40 minutes before we received our entrees. We ordered a pasta dish (lukewarm with a bland marinara) and a filet mignon which was perfectly done as well as sharing a crock of French onion soup. We had higher expectations and thought the food was just ok. This was post Covid reopening so maybe things just haven't gotten back to normal yet. We arrived and no one greeted us for over five min. We got seated and ordered some wine and when they brought me my glass it has some really weird stuff at the bottom. I drink wine and know that sediment can happen this was not that. The wine was also a really strange color so I think maybe it had gone bad and been open too long. The waiter promptly switched it out for a fresh glass. We ordered a couple sushi rolls, crab cakes and paella. The crab cakes were great, sushi was decent and paella was just ok. I would definitely not order that again if I ever went back. Not a ton of flavor, the worlds smallest scallops and overcooked chicken. We also never got napkins or water and had to ask for both. Always good to have another lunch option before or after wine tasting when in Carmel Valley. We have added ROUX to our list of "keepers." I put it behind Corkscrew Cafe but ahead of Cafe Rustica in food quality and service. (We have enjoyed Corkscrew several times. Our one time at Cafe Rustica was a bit of a disappointment mainly because I had such high hopes!) Our server at I. Brand and Family Tasting Room suggested ROUX so we gave it a try. It was a warm day. Very pleasant for sitting on the lovely patio thanks to a large umbrella which shaded our table. DH and I both had sandwiches. My chicken breast sandwich came with gruyere cheese, a thick piece of bacon, tomato slice, and avocado (mashed, not sliced). A tasty combination. My pommes frites were average. Average means I saved calories by leaving most of them. DH had a pulled pork sandwich topped with a red cabbage slaw and a side of romaine salad which was a bit heavy on the bleu cheese dressing. Both DH and I were surprised that our sandwiches were served on very large soft rolls. Perhaps the menu noted the soft rolls, but we missed that. We were expecting a hard roll. Too much bread and both of us left a good portion of the bread. Dessert sounded tempting. But we didn't even finish our sandwiches so took a pass on dessert. Maybe next time. I noted that some reviewers said the portions were small. We certainly did not find that true for lunch. Perhaps dinner portions are smaller. After lunch I enjoyed talking with the owner/chef for a few minutes. You can tell he has a passion for good food that is presented in a pleasing manner. read more

Roux was a delightful foodie experience along with amazing customer service. I went on Easter Sunday for the first time and arrived earlier than the kitchen opened. I asked if I could just sit and enjoy mimosas while they set up tables, etc. They were so accommodating and made me feel so welcomed. Roux recently changed hands and I was told that the menu would remain largely the same. We arrived today after our every weekend hike in Carmel Valley after which we customarily linger over an outdoor and very relaxed lunch at Roux. It continues to delight. I love gazpacho and seasonally find it on their menu. It's the best I've ever enjoyed - golden and red gazpachos side by side in an oval bowl on a folded cloth napkin with a dollop of guacamole! The flavors are so complex and the recipe is just as I remembered from the former owner. The same goes for the tuna tartar on a bed of avocado and pear guacamole with tarp chips on the side - perfection! My husband always orders the three small burger menu item and this item wasn't on the menu today. Four other types of burgers were on the menu, but they weren't what he wanted to order. This led us to believe that his favorite item was gone forever. When he asked our server, Sol, she didn't hesitate to say that my husband could order them! It's that kind of place. Went to roux last evening and I can say I was really upset with service - the host seemed so bothered by me and my friends presence - yeah probably not your typical clientele in our breeches and boots gave us a snooty look and sat us and told me he was leaving me in charge of the wine list as a joke and handed me an empty wine list.. unbeknownst to him we were all off age.. Food is fantastic but seemed to be in a rush to get us out of there but we were having a little business meeting it was like 6 and no one was even in the restaurant except us so you would usually except your service to be better then this.
