This rating is based on my most recent visit. I'm rating a 4 because I have eaten here often (because it's in my neighborhood) and the food is very good. However, today I tried something new, the avocado toast. I typically love avocado toast, and even make it at home. Roux piled on too many toppings which I scraped off. And the toppings made the bread soggy. It made a huge portion, but it was enough for 2 slices of sourdough. I guess the topping was chow chow but flavor was lacking. The bitterness of the white onions overwhelmed the dill. Other than that tart flavor, it was very bland. I actually added salt. I will continue to eat at Roux, but I won't order avocado toast again. As a sidenote, my usual orders are the biscuit breakfast sandwich, the shrimp and grits (which are amazing!) and all the pastries are wonderful. read more

Roux is a great addition to Hyde Park serving up big portions with a southern flair. It's spacious on the inside and there's room to chat with friends or even do some work on less crowded weekdays. When the weather's nice there's seating outside too. I will say that this place is a true 3.7 stars only because the food has been a miss sometimes. The last time I went the sausage biscuit sandwich I had was way too salty. I had to take the meat off so that I could even eat it. Sometimes the shrimp and grits have been fantastic and other times, they haven't agreed with my stomach. But one thing that's been consistent is how delicious the cinnamon roll is. I've gotten it every time and it's been a hit every time. It's massive and delicious without being too sweet. In my opinion, way better than the beignets, which are also decent. We walked in and ordered after waiting in line for about ten minutes. Breakfast for the three of us cost $62 which seems outrageous but is increasingly the norm. My sister had the catfish and fries. It was crunchy but she said it had no flavor. After she'd ordered it our cousin also said he didn't care for it because of the minimal flavor. (I guess he didn't want to share his thoughts before we ordered!) I opted for the grits, bacon and beignets. The grits were creamy but also didn't have any flavor. The bacon was crispy but was just okay. The beignets were good though. I also thought the orange juice was bitter. My cousin just had an order of potatoes and sausage. He'd ordered it before so he was happy with his selections. The restaurant is bright, clean and comfortable. The decor is simple yet has an understated elegance about it. The noice level also wasn't too bad considering it was packed. NOLA in general is the best eating I've had. Anytime I can get their cooking I'm in. Shout goes to the beignets and the loaded grits. The Tar-tine tomato is just OK. It's too cheesy and the bacon also takes away from the tomato. Fried green tomatoes should be by itself. The cod was not fishy and the breading was flavored so that I didn't need to add ketchup, hot sauce, or any other condiments. The tartar sauce for dipping was good enough. They have a ton of indoor and outdoor (shaded) seating, and you order food at the counter (so no reservation required). It's a good spot for big groups! There is a lot of meat on the menu, and not a lot of vegetarian or vegan options. However, it was easy to ask for dishes without meat or with the bacon on the side. I tried the fried green tomato terrine (without the bacon) and it was great. I loved the fluffy brioche toast.
