I was fast approaching time to say good-bye. Timing was awful because I was expecting house guests the next day and had a very sick dog. My dog was having trouble walking, stopped eating, and labored breathing. Just one week earlier, she was behaving fairly normally, although seemed a bit tired but given her age, she gave me no reason for concern. THIS WAS DURING COVID I tried to get an appointment with our regular vet however they were so overwhelmed with patients due to the COVID surge of new dog owners they could not see my dog for 2 weeks so they recommended Dr. Matzke. Dr. Matzke returned my call right away and said she would be available to come to our home when I was ready. This is a long story, but Dr. Matzke did not end up coming out after all because my regular vet was nice enough to call back and agreed to stay after hours see my dog for an end of life assessment. After labs, ultra sound, and X-rays, the news was not good. This was our 9th dog we have put down so I prepared myself--but it never gets any easier. Their weakened, tired arthritic bodies hold on until they know they've completed their job here on the physical earth. 4 months prior to her last day, she had done her job. We had acquired a puppy of the same breed to our family. In her last months, big sister taught the puppy all the rules. How to use the dog door, how to walk nicely on a leash, gave the puppy fair corrections on puppy biting and letting the puppy know when play got too rough. He met us in a grassy park and Dexter was so distracted with Oreos that he didn't feel the injection. The entire process was less than a half hour. It was peaceful and painless (for the dog). After his heart stopped, we spent a few minutes saying goodbye. Then, Dr Chris made a clay pawprint and took him to the crematorium for us. It was a gentle and loving experience and I'm so relieved knowing he's resting and not in pain anymore. Definitely not an easy review to write but nonetheless a very comforting experience thanks to an amazing team of Vets. In a matter of a few days I learned that my sweet Rosie had a health condition which rapidly affected her quality of life. I had to make quick decisions towards the end of the week, and had reached out to another in-home vet but it sounded like it would be days of waiting (which I wasn't sure would be feasible given the uncertainty of my doggie and her wellbeing). Having to quickly weigh out all options I realized I preferred an in-home to have Rosie as stress free during her last day with us at home. I reached out to another newer vet in-home provider who could only come out the following week, but they directed me to the visiting angels website where I came across Rover Vet care. My call was answered immediately and compassionately by one of the doctors, and to my relief they could come out the same day (being a friday) and offered an evening slot. After confirming with the Vet Dr. Chris, I was given instructions on what to expect during the visit, and even a seamless way to get payment out of the way. Dr. Chris explained each step throughout the process and I appreciated all of the warmth and compassion that was provided throughout this experience. It was also endearing to learn that the Vets that work with Rover also work at the Nevada Humane Society, so it was a full-circle experience with my Rosie being a Res-que doggie. I know when the time comes again to get a new pet family member and although I don't like thinking this far ahead but if ever needed again for an in-home service I would hands-down go with Rover.
