I brought my elderly dog Billy to Fairgrounds for the last 4 years of his life. Overall my experience was amazing: the doctors, techs and staff were always very kind, helpful and patient and handled my dog with immense care. There were times it was hard to get a hold of the desk to make an appointment or ask a question, but I started to have better luck with emailing in vs calling...almost always a prompt response. Wait times during appointments could also get long, but it's understandable with a smaller hospital like theirs. I knew they always had my baby's best interest at heart and provided the best care for him they could, which makes up for any delays we experienced. They gave me a lovely card and nose and paw prints after we had to say goodbye to my little boy. I will always remember their kindness during that time and recommend bringing your babies here, too. read more

WE NOW HAVE A DEAD DOG WHICH MOST LIKELY COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED: We took our Newfoundland dog in to get dental surgery on Thursday, June 18th. They said he did fine coming out of the anesthesia. My husband got home and the dog was panting. We chalked it up to the dog may have had some anesthesia in his system. He was this way all night. We took him back on Friday and he was in the same condition with a temperature of 106. Our Newfie was there for a few hours and then sent home on Friday. On Saturday we had to rush him to the emergency vet and he had to be put down because he was much worse. THE DOG NEVER SHOULD HAVE BEEN RELEASED TO US WITH HOW BAD HIS BREATHING WAS. HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN REFERRED TO AN OVERNIGHT VET HOSPITAL ON THURSDAY! When he was taken in, based on the notes, he was given oxygen and was breathing more normally. This did not last. After consulting others, we are being told that something definitely went wrong with the anesthesia. We should have been told that our dog needed to be admitted overnight to an emergency vet for over night monitoring instead of being released to us. I booked an appointment 2 weeks in advance for my elderly dog to have an allergy shot. I checked in and waited 30 minutes for his doctor. The girl at the front desk said he would need an annual exam,however I would have to reschedule so he could not have his shot that day. Dr. Johnson is my paco's vet, but today another veterinarian was there (Dr. Diana Kushlan) and she was so good to my little boy. From explaining everything that's going on with him, to go over and over back to exams to. Akd sure everything was alright (or at least to rule out the worse possibilities), she made it seem so much less hard. Even though my dog snap at a strangers, she was very nice and even greed us outside when I was about to pull out in the parking lot. Services and attention like this makes all the difference. I wish I could rate these amazing people more than a 5 star rating. This week I had to put a family dog done. He has been with our family for 8 years. This beautiful puppers not only live hunting but he was a family protector, a loved side kick, and is the father of my beloved puppy. I was desperate to find a vet that would understand that he is just not a pet he is a beloved family member. The staff at Fairgrounds truly understood how much he meant to our family. They not only treated this beautiful puppy as though he was a family member but were able to understand the pain our family was going through. They didn't make me feel rushed I saying goodbye to our beloved family member but they also thought of our pain. They light a candle for Walker to let others know we were losing saying goodbye but they also provided us with a flower and a tag with his name and sending us paw prints and hair cuttings so we can create shadow boxes for all this that loved him. The doctor that assisted in granting this baby peace was so kind and understanding. The tech that was with me stayed until I was ready to let him go. He even spent time consoling me and made sure to assist me to find peace in the passing! They have gained a long time customer and there are no words I can say for how much Thank you all! read more

Date of appointment: August 28th, 2020 I usually take my dog to another location, bu they were booked, this location was recommended by several friends so i decided to try it out. I called wanting to book an appointment for my chihuahua, and they had really good availability, i was able to get my dog an appointment for that same week! The receptionist who answered was nice. Actual day of the appointment: Due to the current situation, you have to call or text to check in. This is where i got a bit frustrated. I waited outside in my car for over 30mins from the time i checked in. Someone walked out and i asked them when i would be seen, and he was kind and told me he would check on that for me. At this point i was flustered, it was so hot outside and my dog was panting due to the heat. But i decided not to knock off a star because the staff were all super nice. The Vet Tech was so friendly and she treated my dog with care. My dog was attended my Dr. Andrus and he was super nice as well. He explained what was going on and provided me with care instructions. A couple days later he even gave me a call to check how my dog was doing, which i really appreciated. The service really compensated for the wait time. I once loved this veterinarian office and have been taking my pets there for 8 years (hence two stars instead of one) but things have changed there. The last two times I visited with my 1 yo rescue I've received rude comments about my dog's behavior from staff. We've had her only five months but in that time we've tackled potty training because she wasn't potty trained at 7 months when we adopted her. She's very excitable and has had a rough past, her previous owner neglecting her. She was actually part of cruelty litigation before we adopted her. I'm including these details because she is doing quite well, considering her obstacles. The office is also aware of how far she's come--or should be--because I've told them. She has some anxiety which seems to get worse when we go to the vet. I'm guessing this is fairly typical for many dogs. In the waiting room she was jumping up a bit (on me) but not barking or bothering other dogs. I do not allow her to jump on people or get close to other dogs and I have her on a very short leash; I had her under control and seated at my feet for the most part, but she was clearly nervous and panting One of the longtime receptionists is great and has always been sweet with my dog. A newer receptionist, on the other hand, has asked me on two visits if I'd prefer to wait in a room, making comments about my dog needing to be trained. At this visit, she started giving my dog commands such as "down", etc. It is ridiculous to assume a dog you've never seen before is going to obey your commands, especially in a high stress environment such as a vet's office! Surely mine is not the first dog to get over-stimulated by all the sights and smells there! The tech even thought it necessary to tell me she shouldn't need to pee for awhile bc she peed twice when they had her in the back (they always take dogs behind the scenes, which is odd). Is my dog the first to pee at the vet from nervousness or was this further evidence of "bad behavior"? It felt like we were really inconveniencing them. My request for help with the separation anxiety I've been seeing at home was this: training. While I acknowledge that training is needed for our pup and we have been working on basic commands at home, I find Fairgrounds' lack of understanding and compassion upsetting and will be finding another vet. It would have been invaluable to me to hear some encouragement rather than judgment from staff as rescues, particularly those who have been mistreated, can be a challenge. read more

I am so thankful for this animal hospital I can't even put it into words. My 11 year old Chihuahua suddenly couldn't walk and was crying. I took him to a vet in California when I was out of town and they misdiagnosed him. I was told he would feel better in a few days but he ended up feeling much worse. I came back to Fairgrounds and walked in the door with tears in my eyes and my screaming little guy. They consoled me, helped me not panic and took him back. They gave me a new diagnosis and gave me the medication for him. He is feeling so much better just a day later. I truly appreciate all of the staff here. They acted like it was an inconvenience that I wanted an annual appointment where I could actually speak with the vet. Seemed like they just wanted to get away with a quick in and out visit with a vet tech. They made me wait an extra half hour pass my appointment time once I told them I wanted to see the vet. Once we were in the appointment, they took my dog into the back room to "examine her". I do not like that they don't examine pets in the room with the owner present. Everything I mentioned as a concern about my pet, I felt like the vet was super unfriendly and just brushed it off. I wanted her nails trimmed but honestly I felt so pushed out the door, I didn't even ask. Knowing now that they don't even offer emergency services, I will likely be changing her vet. read more

The only reason I didn't give 5 stars was because of the wait time. I dropped my dog off first thing in the morning to get his teeth cleaned and teeth pulled. If I could give negative stars I would.. never ever bring your animal to this vet if you want them to live... I don't even know where to start there has been so many problems. For starters I have been an established patient here for over two years.. every year I go in for vaccines and instead of them giving me a 3 year rabies vaccine they charge me as a new patient & do a new rabies vaccine every year.. maybe because they can't read a chart maybe to line their pockets who knows.. but that's not even the worst of it. Last October I brought my dog in to have a mass on her leg (front elbow) looked at -I was concerned it was a tumor. They look at it & confirm it's not a tumor but a hygroma, change her bedding it will go away in time or get better. Come April they are due for their vaccines again.. I ask again.. hey that hygroma has grown substantially.. can u please take a look at it.. all the sudden now it's a concern we need to do a biopsy. So we do.. the next day come in and pay 800$ for a biopsy , and yes it comes back cancerous... they stitch her up tell me to come back in 10-14 days for the suture removal but wouldn't book me an appointment- told me just to call.. day 10 I call tell them I need to get in for the suture removal and they are supposed to be doing her lung X-rays (which they quoted me at 166$) and I was supposed to have received a quote on a leg amputation.. not only do they not have my quote, they tell me they can't see me till next week for the suture removal.. I was hesitant because that would be 3 weeks on the sutures.. I make the appointment for Monday.. they then call me back 15 min later after I booked the appointment and say Monday won't work come on Thursday, I get kinda upset, because her sutures were looking pretty angry but it's the only time They can see me so I agree to Thursday... Sunday I start getting the text reminders for her Monday apt.. I just assume maybe they didn't delete the apt I had scheduled Monday- 8am Monday morning they call n ask why I am not there with my dog.. I said umm hello you yourself Sharon , u moved me to Thursday? She says oh ok.. but I'm not seeing an apt for Thursday for u.. I get angry.. I tell them.. I am bringing my dog to you on Thursday like u asked to get these sutures out, Im not waiting a day longer, n u better have my amputation quote ready for me & get her X-rays done .. I'm not even playing at this point .. they say ok that's fine bring her Thursday.. Thursday we show up.. no amputation quote, X-rays all the sudden cost 800$ not 166$ and now they are trying to charge me for the suture removal and antibiotics she shouldn't have needed if they could have just done their job, or even scheduling correct. I came unglued.. I told them , you know you messed up... u know you not only misdiagnosed my dog, but then didn't take care of any of the procedures you performed on her, now she has an infection and u want to charge me money for that ?as well as not follow the quote you gave me on her X-rays?? And still don't have an amputation quote ready for me... my dog is now super sick with an infection from their biopsy, but also a cancerous tumor they misdiagnosed.. I told them you guys are clearly incapable of taking care of something as simple as scheduling for suture removals and now my dog has an infection but also don't know the difference between a hygroma and a tumor, now we are in an emergency state, trying to find a vet to help us because of her infection (which by the way they left a suture in her leg "they couldn't remove" due to the infection) and they haven't offered to make anything right.. other than give me the antibiotics I demanded for free.. If my dog dies, it will be fully due to their negligence and inability to diagnosis cancer after they have looked at this same tumor by 2 different vets on three or 4 separate occasions. Never go here especially if it's something serious & you want your pet to live, they will just charge you thousands of dollars while they let your pet suffer. read more

This past time, I experienced something that I haven't experienced in a long, long, long time, And something that I'm pretty sure the rest of the world has forgotten..Compassion and understanding! Both Darby and Dr. Rishwain went above and beyond with my pet's care. I was amazed at the compassion shown towards me. I wasn't treated like an object as you see now a days in medical offices. They were supposed to call and check in but no one did, so I called later in the afternoon myself. Beth/Bess(?) answered and when I said I wanted to give an update on my pet she went "......okay......." followed by very awkward silence. So I tried to tell her Goldie is feeling better, thanks and please contact me when they have the meds in from order she needed, but B cut me off, put me "on hold" and that was the last I heard. I hung up after several minutes. She may have been having a bad day? I was hoping the other reviews about rude desk staff were wrong because everyone yesterday way lovely but man, nothing makes you feel as small as someone acting like you're an idiot for even deigning to call. I'm sad now, it's bothered me all day since I called and I felt it was worth passing on in case this is a pattern of behavior here. :( read more

The vets at this office are more concerned with profit over animal well-being. And for preface, this is not my first bad experience with Fairgrounds Animal Hospital but it will certainly be my last. My dog was taken into the back room for her whole check up, in past experiences the doctor checks out the dog in the room where the family is present. When the vet, Dr Chen, came and spoke to me, she said she would check for record of her vaccines. I told her I would call my mom to check if she got them somewhere else and Dr Chen said she would come back to check before giving my dog any vaccines. I learn my dog is update on her vaccines from just one year ago. About 10 minutes pass and my dog is brought back to the room by Shakira, who was absolutely amazing the whole time, and tells me Dr Chen administered three vaccines. I did not consent to these vaccines and Dr Chen did not care how this could affect my dog. I left holding back tears. The negligence is atrocious and I will not be returning. Since this experience, I have heard from three friends, on separate occasions, that had bad experiences with Fairgrounds Animal Hospital. I'm so deeply disappointed that vets office like these exist. read more

I have been going to fairgrounds for 12 years and my mom has been for close to 30. They are absolutely amazing! They are always friendly and kind making it a great experience for me and my pets. They always go above and beyond for my pets, my 12 year old dog got very sick and most vets Would have said it was time to put her down but they did testing and found what was wrong and I've been blessed with over 7 more months and counting with my sweet girl, I'll never go anywhere else. read more

Initially was happy with how sweet the doctors are with my nervous dog. Not impressed that for my last few appointments, they're 45 minutes late and claim it's because they had an emergency case come in. Either they need more staff or need to stop over booking people. They have a number to text now when you arrive... that no one responds to. The phone line is constantly busy so don't bother. Currently 11:40. Appt time was 10:00 for two shots and for doctor to look at a healing hot spot. What a great place! My parents have a very spoiled golden retriever that they very much love. The dog developed a wound on his leg and was itching and it was getting infected. We (neither I nor my parents) had a local veterinarian. Fairgrounds staff was their first 5 star part. From the front desk attendant to the vets and assistants, they were friendly, professional, and caring. Second 5 star rating is the service. They were able to get us in same day and spend a lot more time with us than any vet has in the past. I am so happy to have a local veterinarian that I can trust. We recently relocated to the Reno area from Texas at the beginning of August 2017. In Texas, we had an excellent veterinarian who checked out both of our Chihuahuas before our departure. Both received excellent and clean bills of health. A couple of weeks after our move, our oldest, Chiquita, began having labored breathing and became very lethargic to the point she could barely move. We brought her to Fairgrounds on Monday morning. After waiting almost one-half hour, we were finally shown into an exam room where a vet tech came in and started examining our baby. As the vet tech examined her, she started advising us that Chiquita really needed to have her teeth cleaned and lecturing us about the importance of keeping a canine's teeth clean. I politely told her that teeth cleaning was not the reason why we were there. After a few minutes of examining our baby, the vet tech advised us that the vet would be in shortly. Another 20 minutes later the vet finally showed up with the vet tech with an estimate of charges in hand. We thought this was a bit unusual. The vet examined our baby and threw out a couple of possibilities of what might be wrong with her. She advised that they would need to get medical records from our previous vet and they would need to do some labs on her. Our previous vet faxed over the medical records within minutes. We said that was fine on the labs and asked how long before we would know. We were advised it would take about 10 minutes to have the results but no more than 20 minutes. We were shown back out to the waiting area where we sat for almost 3 more hours (I am not exaggerating on the time either) before we were finally called into the back for the results. We were told our baby had pancreatitis and it would be easily taken care of by hydrating via IV and some antibiotics. At that time we were handed another estimate for close to $800 for them to keep our baby for 4 hours in order to administer IV fluids. That was quite a shock to us as our vet in Texas charged $54 per day to keep an animal for 24 hours under observation and IV fluids. We opted to perform the IV fluids at home since we have done that before for some of our animals. We were told it would be 30 minutes before the fluids and antibiotics would be ready. We opted to leave and come back. We left and came back 2 hours later to pick everything up and was advised that it still was not ready. We asked them to call us when it was ready. They called us at 5:45 PM that evening and advised it was ready. We advised them it would take us at least 20 minutes to get there and we were informed that it had to be picked up by 6:00 PM or it would have to wait until the following morning. They would not wait for an extra 5 minutes. Unfortunately, I was not able to be there the next morning since I had missed most of the work day on Monday, so I had to make a 2 PM appointment for Tuesday. We arrived 10 minutes before our appointment and waited for close to an hour before finally saying something to the receptionist who took an attitude over having to walk to the back and find out what was taking so long. We saw a vet tech within 5 minutes. He was very apologetic over the wait and advised that someone who had a 1:55 PM appointment, who arrived after we did, was seen before us. Needless to say, we got our baby home and started the IV fluids and antibiotics. As each day progressed, she seemed to be improving and on Thursday, she was back to her old self. We kept up the IV fluids and antibiotics. Friday evening, she started having the same breathing problems and became even more lethargic than she was on Monday. It was too late to contact the vet and we were not sure what to do. Unfortunately, we lost our baby Chiquita that night. We have heard nothing from the vet since we took our baby in. No phone calls to see how she was doing, progressing, absolutely nothing. If we could give a negative star rating on this vet clinic, we would certainly do it. I have been very kind in this review as my anger is still boiling within over the loss of our baby. During our entire experience with this vet clinic, it seemed to us that they were more interested in collecting money than showing concern for our baby. We honestly would not recommend this vet clinic to anyone. We have had animals our entire lives and rescued quite a few as well. We have dealt with some awesome vets in our years. However, this is the first vet clinic we have ever dealt with that seemed more concerned about money than their patients. We suggest using extreme caution before choosing this vet clinic to take your fur babies to. read more

I recently took my dog in to get blood work because I was afraid that he may have Lyme Disease. First, the vet tech kept calling my dog the wrong name which was odd and irritating. My dog is older and was nervous. I explained the symptoms he was having and how he was uncomfortable in the hip area. They took him in the back to do an exam then brought him back. The vet did a hip exam (just moved his legs around) and said that she didn't feel any arthritis and that he was just uncomfortable because he was nervous.... really? I took him to the vet about 3 years ago and the vet took an X-ray and said that he is showing signs of arthritis. Anyways, then I showed them that sometimes he gets dog lice and showed them. They had no idea what it was... which I thought was odd and another red flag that I should have walked out but I really needed the blood work asap. Then, they took my nervous dog in the back again for the blood work. I could hear him in the back yelping and then they brought him back. We sat in the waiting room for another 20 minutes before they came back and said that they messed up and needed more blood. My dog was so scared to go in the back again and would barely move. The vet tech just kept pulling on his leash and calling him by the wrong name. This is where I wanted to walk out! Then after this we are sitting again another 25 minutes in the room as the vet said they will be back with his medication. I NEVER agreed to any tick prevention medication and quickly told them that I don't need anything just the results. I feel like they were trying to push extra stuff on top of this visit. Finally, we left! Here is the WORST part! I called 2 days later to see if I could talk to a different vet about just starting him on antibiotics instead of waiting a few days for the results. The receptionists said that they already had the results!!! When were you going to plan on calling me??? She said that she would have a vet call me back. I waited... still nothing. I called back again, and the receptionist said MAYBE after 2pm the vet will call me. I waited until after 5 and decided to call before they closed. The receptionist told me it was negative. No other information except if I wanted more tests... more money. I called back the next day because I wanted the results mailed for my records. I talked to the office manager and she gave me every excuse in the book. Told me to quit interrupting, listen and that I shouldn't have called 3x. If I wouldn't have called, I probably still wouldn't have the results. If they are like this with humans, then how are they with our animals when we aren't around. It is sad that people that work at veterinary office don't understand that these pets are our babies and made me feel like they could really care less. I was worried all day and for them to say MAYBE they will call me was insane. I will NEVER give this place a single dime. I will make sure all my friends and family members never go there. Awful experience I just couldn't believe that I had to call to see if the test results came back... and that MAYBE they will call me back that day. If my dog has Lyme disease, he needs antibiotics right away. Can't believe they felt like they could just call at their leisure especially when I am worried sick all day at work. read more

I've been with Dr Johnson and the Fairgrounds Hospital for decades because they are a compassionate, experienced and talented team. I could go on and on about the wonderful personalize care they provide. They understand my pets are a part of my family. Recently, my dog had to have emergency surgery. They took such wonderful care of her, followed up daily to ensure she was doing okay and to answer questions I may have about her care or progress.
