I just started working out at Roworx with my girl friend after seeking a high calorie burning workout that's easy on my joints. I'm not very athletic, so I was a tad intimidated at first at the thought of taking classes from a Pro-Athlete!!! Haha. However, Jack was so helpful and nice. He taught me proper form and technique, answered my many questions, and gave me great fitness tips. The workout is not only challenging, but motivating and fun. I thoroughly enjoyed rowing tonight with Brandon. It was my very first time ever taking a rowing class so I was super nervous that I would honestly be crawling out the door. But it was actually not that bad. Granted he took most of the time teaching us form and technique. But seeing that it was my first time, I truly felt it was important that I was doing it right. Especially because I could actually see someone's back going out if they were not properly informed. The boathouse location is absolutely beautiful. They keep the side door open so you get the view of the water. So if I was taking a morning class, I could see how they could get packed quick. But there are so many machines that they can at the least fit 30 people. I am so happy that I purchase ten classes. I can't wait to go back in there and row away. This was my first experience rowing in a small group setting and i have to say it was absolutely amazing. The class size was small, individualized, and outside with an incredible view overlooking the water in marine stadium. Jack is super knowledgeable about rowing as he told us his father coached the US Olympic rowing team and qualified for the Olympics in rowing right here in Long Beach and then went on to win an bronze medal in 1968. Wow ! I had no idea about all the Olympic history that is in and around the city of Long Beach. During covid you can still workout here at Roworx safely outside while keeping socially distant and get a full body workout. I had such a great time at the rowing class with Jack Nunn. He is such an amazing instructor who made the class fun, challenging and interesting. Rowing is a great workout for the entire body. I never though that rowing could be so enjoyable. The rowing machines were new and very clean. The class was outdoors in a shade with a beautiful water view and a fresh breeze. Hands down the best workout possible. Tried this years ago and loved it, but then I moved and assumed I'd just row from home. Nope. I have about 5 minutes of motivation at home without an instructor. So I sucked it up and I'm making the commute to Roworx again because it's literally the only thing I stick with because it's the only thing I see results from. Pros: Small class sizes Instructors are world class rowers (literally) so you can ask them anything/everything about form/tricks/tips The view is absolutely amazing Plenty of parking The people in the class are super friendly and not intimidating at all. Wide variety of ages. You can make it as hard or as easy as you want depending on how much effort you put in. It's nice that you don't have to pre-reserve the class like a lot of other places are doing online. That's super annoying, I'm glad Roworx doesn't do this. I've tried a lot of other workouts and I've never stuck to them because I don't see the results. With rowing you will definitely get your cardio and strength training in. I love that I can adapt my workout and adjust accordingly but still come and get the workout in no matter what excuse I try to give myself. And you can't beat the instructors- every single one of them have a laundry list of rowing championships under their belt, which is nice because they can apply that to you and what they see in your form. It's not just some guy who got a certification in fitness, these guys live and breathe this stuff, in a completely non-pretentious way. I absolutely love Roworx. Unlike other forms of exercise, rowing machines are fairly accessible to most people. I came here on a coupon deal, and it was interesting. I didn't like it enough to continue with it after the fact, especially since it was a distance from my house, but I can see how others would truly like it. The space is small, and there is some floor work involved, but parking is ample and the view from the inside is surprisingly good. What an incredible workout paired with an absolutely stunning location! Workout for an hour while watching the sun set over the water? Ummmm.... yes, please! I have no clue where my interest in rowing came from but, I have always been intrigued by the sport. I think part of my interest comes from purely how it looks; it's quite beautiful to see a group of people working together to create one cohesive movement. I think the other part of my interest is a curiosity into how it feels to be a part of that one cohesive, strong, beautiful movement. Regardless of where my curiosity came from, it was really exciting to actually give rowing a shot at Rowox. If it's your first class, show up a little early to get situated; let the instructor know it's your first time and they'll do a quick run-down of the basics for you. Class will start out with a few warm up exercises followed by some breakdowns of the "perfect stroke" to help you make sure your form is on-point. Once warm-ups are over, be ready to put in some serious work... the instructors don't mess around (especially Jack, the Owner). I've been going on a weekly basis for about 6 months now and I don't think we've ever done the same workout twice, which is great! For me, mixing things up definitely makes the time go by faster. Another thing that makes the time go by fast in class are the stories the instructors tell, specifically Jack's stories. Of course, there are your typical "you get out of it what you put into it"s, and the "push harder"s, but they're all mostly drowned out by Jack's first-hand accounts of being in the sport for years. From stories of being on the National Team to stories of what it was like growing up with an Olympic Medalist as your Dad, Jack's tales are all riddled with themes of perseverance and motivation and they'll definitely get you to row a little harder. Since starting to row, I feel so much better on a day-to-day basis and when I run or bike I feel stronger and faster. For more perspective, I've scaled back on riding and running and I'm still able to ride and run further than before which I can only attribute to rowing. Shortly after starting to train at Roworx, I completed my very first 1/2 Marathon and I felt great... I even did an hour-long Roworx class right after the race! Since then, I've since completed 2 more 1/2 Marathons and have completed my first Triathlon and I feel stronger and faster that I ever have. The heartbeat of Roworx is its Members, led by Jack. Sometimes in a class of 10-20 people, there are a few strokes that we'll magically end up taking in unison and for a moment my intrigue is fed and I can feel the beauty of the sport and the energy of what it's like to all be working as one cohesive unit... all with different fitness goals, working together to achieve them. Being in The Boathouse, there is the opportunity to row in an actual boat on the water and I think that's next on my list! But for now, I'll keep relying on the Concept2 Rowing Machine paired with Jack's stellar instruction. read more

I took my nephew here because he was interested in the sport of rowing (we watched a few movies and it motivated him to get out there and to do it himself. So I looked up online and this place came up. When I brought him in the staff were nice and answered all his questions and gave him the information on how and what he would need to do in order to start preparing himself for this kind of sport. I have been reading recently about how rowing can be such a good overall workout and a lot of athletes use it for training. While I am not on that level, I decided to give it a try recently. I came across Roworx as it is close to my work in Long Beach, so very convenient. I went in to learn some more information and how everything works. Met Jack and he explained everything to me and really seemed genuinely interested, not like most gyms where they are just trying to work on a commission to sign you up. You can't find anyone more experienced than Jack, wow what a career! I went in the next day after work and Jack and his crew taught a great class and was really felt welcomed being a newcomer to rowing. Came here for a class and I had SO much fun and would definitely come back here for another class, but unfortunately this type of workout wouldn't have provided enough evolution consistent with my fitness goals. I showed up about 10 minutes early and a really nice older gentleman helped me learn the machine and get some solid technique down to avoid injury (and embarrassment) once the fast-paced class started. Once the instructor, Jack, who is an Olympic rower and coach, showed up, I was like well SHIT good luck to me. I seriously doubted I was ever gonna pay attention with a drool piece like him sitting in front of me. He is seriously SO good looking, SO fit and has an infectiously positive attitude. Everyone in the class seemed to be regulars, but they were all very welcoming and energetic. We all grabbed weights and went back to our machines to start. I didn't break a sweat until I really started focusing on my form and listening to Jack's short instructions. Most of the class was age range 45-60 and a solid mix of men and women, and I could definitely see how this type of low-impact cardio would be excellent for an older crowd (not to say at ALL that this isn't a good workout), just not for me as a regular means. Once we got going, this was a very challenging class and I was really impressed. The best part about it (besides Jack...*swoon*), was the studio itself. I took the 6:00pm class and the studio is on the dock right over the water...the windows to the place were wide open and we caught the breeze coming in off the water and even got to see the entire sunset, it was really quick spectacular. The rowing teams for the local high schools and the college train from here and all the rowing boats (whatever they are called) were all lined up outside. I will definitely come back here this summer for a few classes and I highly recommend it for someone looking for some variety and a more gentle on the joints form of cardio (note: this isn't JUST cardio; my arms, legs and core all felt it the next day). Tried this out for a month on a living social deal. I was initially introduced to rowing at a Crossfit gym. I bought my own concept 2 rower and started using it allot more during my recovery from ACL surgery. When I saw the living social deal I thought it would be a great chance for me to get some expert advice on technique and rowing specific training. I was happy with the instruction and overall experience. Each instructor had their own style. I enjoyed each of the classes but liked Elizabeth's the most. Her classes were the most instructional for me and left me feeling like I had a great workout. Her energy was always high and the class vibe was fun! Overall a good experience and I got something from each class. With the verity of coaches they have I'd guess anyone interested in rowing would like this place. read more

Their workouts combine strength and endurance while maintaining the proper technique. No better view for working out. They have set up looking over the marina. I had a great first experience here. Jack, the owner, and trainer on Sundays, was super helpful getting my foot straps, display, and flywheel set up. He was energetic and kept the class engaged by telling stories and encouraging us. The view from the Roworx room is incredible - all you see is the water, boats, and people walking around the marina. I live in Irvine, but it was worth the drive to try out the class. I got good cardio with very low impact. I realize this type of workout is more of a lower body/core focus than upper body, which I really enjoyed. I'll definitely come back for more classes. read more

Over the years I have seen folks use the rowers at the gym. Then I had total knee replacement and needed an exercise that was kind to my knees. My Dr suggested swimming and rowing. I've been taking classes at Roworx for about a month and I am hooked! First of all, I've dropped 8 pounds and I'm finally starting to see my six pack. I can't tell you how many other things I've tried but just stayed the same weight so that right there makes it worth it. The other thing is my cardio has improved exponentially. If you want to workout with former Olympians, National Champs and major athletes, not just certified trainers, but major lifelong athletes this is the gym for you. Every time I go to Roworx classes I run into a former Olympians or someone training for the Olympics. I hear things like "Oh yeah, he won the silver in the double skulls for rowing" or "He and his wife are both silver medalists for rowing in two different Olympics" . Truly, its inspiring and rewarding, and I feel special to be amongst so many amazing athletes. A friend of mine kept trying to get me to go with her to Power House for a rowing class. I love to work out, but have never liked group exercise classes. But she persisted, and I was stuck in a rut, so I gave in. And spent the first class laughing, it was so much fun. The class is always a mix, the instructors change it up all the time - fast, slow, rowing, weights. And Jack, especially, is always good for a funny story. And to my delight, I quickly started to see a change. I was stronger, I felt better, the knee that had been giving me problems for years stopped bugging me. This spurred on my inner competitor, and before I knew it, I was pushing myself harder and harder. But I was still having fun. Ok, I said it was fun, but if you push yourself, it's not always easy. And I have to admit, there is often a point in class when I ask myself if I've gone totally crazy. But then Jack tells one of his stories, and I laugh, and suddenly class is over. And I realize I'm not crazy, I feel great and I can't wait for the next class. read more

I want others to know about the quality fitness I've received from Powerhouse Fitness during the past 13 months. Powerhouse Fitness' indoor rowing program at the Boathouse has been a life changing experience for me. I have a stressful job and needed a program that would help me take control of all of the things that were beginning to affect my health. I was lethargic, overweight, and by 2 pm in the afternoon - I just plain tired. But I needed a program that wasn't going to aggravate old sports injuries (and I have had some tough ones). Besides, I had paid to join various gyms and health clubs over the years and never went because I didn't care for that type of environment.....so I wasn't sure what I was going to do. I saw an add in the local Belmont Shore Gazette advertising indoor rowing, and the picture and testimonials from a member of Powerhouse Fitness. He had lost 50 lbs in less than a year and he said he had gotten his life back and paid nice tribute to the team at Powerhouse Fitness. That testimonial started me thinking about indoor rowing and would I see the same results - because that was exactly what I was looking. Besides, my granddaughter (the college cheerleader she is) encouraged me to check it out. She even accompanied me to check out the Boathouse. So I had nothing to loose! I went to my first class at the Boathouse and met Jack Nunn. He took the time to explain to me how indoor rowing worked and what the basic stroke motions and body positions were in rowing. He said the first class was "free" and encouraged me to give indoor rowing a try just to make sure I like the program. He also assured me that indoor rowing would not impact or affect my old injuries, if I followed his advise and learned the proper technique. The class was one hour long and I was so out of shape it concerned me. Again, he encouraged me to work at my pace to make sure I could make it through the workout. End of story - I got hooked and have been an active member ever since! I've lost 35 lbs in 4 months and look as trim as ever. My family and coworkers have been amazed, and I can't believe my energy levels and how good I feel! The Powerhouse Fitness team is made up of enthusiastic and great people! The camaraderie that I have with other members of Powerhouse is super and I'm making lifetime friendships. As a competitive rower in Long Beach, and on the wrong side of 50, I'm always looking for a training edge. In a recent competition on the C2 indoor rower, I was able to achieve a goal that forever seemed out of reach, made possible by a special accommodation provided by Jack. I had a particular need that fell outside of the structured program, yet he quickly found a way to say "yes". I owe him a debt of gratitude, as do others who were enrolled in the formal competition-readiness program. In addition to his tangible support, I was especially pleased with the interest Jack and his staff took in my private training in spite of it being outside of an organized class setting. The mental and emotional lift this provided helped motivate the daily commitment required. He was even at my side during an out-of-town event (the famous San Diego Indoor Classic) giving guidance and encouragement.
