Cocktails: Margarita, Noir 46 Malbecs, and Moscow Mule.
    Dining O.

We had a wonderful evening at the ROX City Grill in the historic Baker Hotel on Main Street in Saint Charles, Illinois. The bar and dining area is elegant and cozy. It is a hidden gem tucked away inside the beautiful Baker Hotel. We started our evening with cocktails, a Moscow Mule, a Margarita and two glasses of Noir 46 Malbec. The mixed drinks were mixed to perfection. The wine was delicious. The dinner was phenomenal. We had small plate dishes of Crispy Thai Shrimp, Crab Cake, 3 Sliders - Mini Tenderloin Burgers and a Lobster Roll. The chef came out and visited our table answering our questions about the various dishes. The dishes were prepared to perfection. The lobster roll was filled with lobster and crab. The crab cake was beautifully presented, filled with crab. The sliders and shrimp were seasoned and cooked to perfection. The service was excellent, our server was very friendly and accommodating. If you're looking for an elegant dining experience with incredibly delicious dishes. This is the place to go.

Fresh hot donuts - delicious enough to drive to St. Charles from Chicago.

I have eaten here a couple of times. My fiancé likes to treat me to a trip to the hotel about once a year so I've had the breakfast before but never dinner. They have a man playing piano and you can request songs. Everyone was having a good time at the small bar after a wedding had let out. We could hear and see them but it wasn't loud or intrusive. The food was delicious, delicious and more delicious. My favorite part of the meal (it was all truly delicious) was the hot donut dessert. I was so surprised to see the amount of freshly made donuts that they have me. The presentation was beautiful and the donuts and dipping sauces were outstanding. I would seriously drive out to the hotel just for the dessert because I haven't been able to find anything like it in Chicago.

We arrived at 7:30 on a Saturday night, I was super surprised how empty the dining room was. We were seated in a quiet booth tucked away on the side. We started with the filet sliders and wedge salad. Both were soooo good. For dinner, my husband got the steak and I got the. Hi ken tortilla soup. Like our starter dishes - the main course was equally good! Our server was very friendly and attentive. After dinner we stayed for the piano - which was so fun! The bar area really started picking up around 9ish or so. We will definitely go back- for the food and piano,

I showed up early to my scheduled visit by 1 hour. The restaurant wasn't open but the bar was; i was offered to wait and relax at the bar; and I did. Joe, the bartender, is quite good at making you feel like you are important. And he was funny to boot. We witty-bantered a bit back-and-forth, he poured me a fresh Fransiskaner Weissbier (I love it so) and we eyed sports on t.v. here-and-there. Stephanie was my waitress. I ordered the appetizer LUMPIA, which is crispy pork and beef egg rolls, sweet chili dipping sauce. These are exquisite egg rolls, and the sweet chili dipping sauce balanced the bite of the slight fire (truthfully, not very spicy, just a nip of a kick) with the chili spice, and the chef HAMMERED IT HOME!!! I loved it! So this raised my palate alertness to a higher level of expectation. Next, i ordered the New England Lobster Bisque which included sherry-laced lobster cream & the USDA 10 ounce Adobo Skirt Steak, and a dessert later (more on the dessert in a moment). The Lobster bisque was excellent! With various tastes like sherry and lobster and cream, there is real potential to mess things up; so you have to get the balance right or NO DICE!!! (meaning no luck, it is no good). There were just a few pieces of soft corn sprinkled in the middle of it, served in a cast-iron mini skillet; the price to food ratio was high but let me tell you, when you come to a fine dining place such as Rox City Grill, it is all about the quantity of the taste, and NOT the taste of the quantity. This is the first and basic rule of gourmet restaurateurs and the main chefs; you must make your guests want to savor every tasty moment like LIFE ITSELF! The 10 ounce Adobo skirt steak. Ok, a word of caution in general; when you are in Chicagoland, the default is medium; you'll get some pink in your steak unless you specifically ask for well-done (like I like most of my steaks, unless it is filet Mignon, then the only way to eat it is rare to maybe medium rare); and in Chicagoland and on the outskirts if you order a steak well-done, it is usually burned black but is still very good, on average. I went for the well-done option. The sauce was extremely good at taking away from the well-doneness of the steak. I am saying the chef knew what he/she was doing because it all made sense to my taste buds. I think adobo skirt steaks are sort of tougher, spindly meat by their nature with some more tougher cuts (please someone add to this who knows more about various steak cuts than I, obviously). The vegetable of the evening was asparagus which was perfectly cooked to taste creamy with the butter/spices (not hot spicy); sweet lord..BINGO JACK! I wanted to order 5 pounds of this and take it home and slap it in my food processor to make a shake out of it, so good! Is it even legal in Illinois for asparagus to taste so good! So, the dessert is the apple galette. it was apples with vanilla ice cream with fresh cinnamon ground into the ice cream so you saw speckles of it on top of a fresh pastry folded into to bake with caramel drizzle balanced with butter around the whole dessert. When I tasted the ice cream the cinnamon stuck a bit to my throat and i had to wash it down/clear the palate with a little water and get used to it. OH MY!, this was so great and tasty (it isn't apple strudel) and it reminded me of the absolutely EPIC Apfelstrudel I once ate in Bodenmais, Germany. JA JA, SEHR GUT! I was surprised by a fine human being with a meal here who had planned it all out in advance. What a lovely gesture; you are the finest lady!! (you know who you are!). And what a lovely place to fine-dine. Many celebrities have been here over the years (check the walls on the way to the gentlemen's and ladies' rooms) and read about the history of this fine Baker Hotel of which the Rox City Grill is a part. Even the men's room smelled lovely and was spotlessly clean (old-fashioned, I know, to mention this, but the details are in the finest restaurants) and it was all marbled as well as the bar counter top. Grabs the owner and staff by the cheeks, close up to their faces: "YOU HAVE AN AWESOME GEM OF A PLACE IN NORTHERN ILLINOIS" These are some of the experiences you remember as life goes along. Humans, of course, need sustenance and what a memorable time I had here enjoying people and some very fine food. Thank you Stephanie (waitress) and Joe, bartender. Real winners! I'm not a movie critic, but TWO THUMBS UP! Until the Day (we meet again)

I am impressed with Rox City Grill. Although it is located inside a charming, historic St. Charles hotel, the exterior does not belie the modern, sophisticated interior. If I had to sum it up, I would describe it as an upscale, modern gastro pub. My husband I enjoyed the warm and friendly service. I had the fabulous short rib of beef, while my husband feasted on a large ribeye. The portions were more than fair for the price. We also really liked the crab cake appetizer. I also would like to add, the warm cinnamon sugar donuts with trio of sumptuous dipping sauces were amazing. When we arrived at 7:00 on Saturday, the restaurant was pretty quite, however as our dinner progressed many other diner's arrived and the restaurant filled up. I think people come for the live music, the overall atmosphere and the delicious food. We will certainly come back the next time we are in St. Charles.

Great place, very good food. Quiet and great for a date. Highly recommend the Rock. You cook your steak, shrimp, and scallops at your table. Very fun! Our server, Chaiann, was great.

This place is incredible... the food is to die for. It's the first place I've been to and did not feel like bloated or so full to where I was sick because the portions were perfect. Nothing here fell short, in fact it's the first place in the burbs where the food wasn't overly salted or fried in some type of oil. Everything tasted fresh. The flavors were busting up in my mouth every bite I took, even down to snowball fight drink we had. I highly, highly recommend the bread cheese appetizer- this was something super unique to me as I've only had grilled up cheese one other time in Brazil, Queijo Coalho.... There was a beautiful twist on this cheese- crunchy, creamy, sweet, savory and the honey and tabbouleh were such a great finish to this dish. Pair this with the fresh bread and it was chefs kiss! We had the beer braised short rib and seabass- two completely different flavored entres that we absolutely perfect. The short rib you literally can't go wrong with- melted in my mouth with every bite - and hats off the the chef who cooked the onions so perfect to actually be able to taste them instead of just carmelizing or salting them! I would call this your typical Midwest comfort dish. The seabass was much different the salad was tangy with the lentils being rich- add a nice cooked crispy top seabass and you got yourself a unique dish of flavors that will have you thinking what's in it after hours! But the star of the show was dessert of course - OMFG - s'mores ice cream sunday ....... I died and went to heaven literally. I have never tasted ice cream that mimicked everything I've ever wanted my ice cream to taste like. It was the perfect temperature (trust me a lot of restaurants it's either rock hard or melted) this was epic. Creamy, almost pudding like and being able to taste every note was wild to me. The graham cracker - yes the freaking graham cracker was the best one I've ever tasted in my life. Clearly I've never had a graham cracker without preservatives before. The chocolate syrup .... Jeeze let me tell if I could swim in it I would.... The service was friendly, prompt and right on time. The server knew all the cues and timing of all the food to come out. She checked in everytime we got something to make sure everything was just right... you can tell she takes her job seriously but also knows how to interact with people - something a lot of servers lack these days so we really appreciated the service. As for the atmosphere- this place blows a lot of the chi city restaurants out of the water. The organic feel but fancy! Oh, and I can actually talk and hear myself think without blasting music over my head. We will be back ... but honestly please change nothing here- everything you're doing here is fantastic!

Our level of anticipation evaporated almost immediately when we were assaulted by the sound. The singer on stage accompanied by a bass so loud that my bones vibrated. Was the singer good? Couldn't tell because his voice was overpowered by the music. And even though the night was advertised as a Sinatra night....Elvis entertained as much as ole blue eyes. Our group of six were jammed into a booth meant for 4 people against a wall directly in line with the speaker. That means the sound hit us, then the wall, hitting us again as sound travels. We asked if it was possible to lower the volume. No one could talk or communicate during the performance. It was temporarily lowered and then the singer signaled the sound man to up the volume again. How was the food you ask? Three of us had the fish and it was excellent. The Chacuterie tray was well appointed but the salads that followed were bland and the seasonal vegetables consisted of mostly bell peppers with a carrot thrown in. Again..perhaps we would have enjoyed our meal more without the vibrations and incredibly loud music. I downloaded a decibel meter. It said that music in a restaurant should range between 50-65 decibels; my meter averaged 90+ during the show. We spoke with a kind and understandable waiter but not the manager. Management should know from us; this was a one and done. I'm still trying to figure out why other patrons were applauding loudly when you really didn't hear the music. I'd like to say you should try it for the experience but DON'T waste your money to be attacked by sound for 2 hours.
