Personal as there was actually a chance I might see myself in the movie. A small chance but a chance nonetheless. The Grateful Dead Movie is a concert film that captures the band in 1974 playing live at Winterland in San Francisco. I was at one of the five concerts that were filmed for the movie. The movie spends almost as much time showing the audience as it does the band. The cameras weave through the crowd inside and outside the venue, before, during and after the show. I saw the movie theatrically when it first came out in 1977, and I've probably seen it another dozen times over the years. After the first couple screenings I quit looking for myself in the crowd scenes. But this was the first time I would be seeing the movie in IMAX, and a freshly remastered print on top of that. I imagined the larger format might afford me a better view of the audience. Maybe, just maybe, I'd catch a glimpse of 19 year old Mikey. Imagine the prospect of going to a concert, then fifty years later seeing your 19 year old self twenty feet high on an IMAX screen? Would I even recognize myself? Well we'll never know because once again I failed to spot myself in the crowd. Not really surprising of course, I knew it was a long shot. The headrest sits too high and pushes your shoulders back, leaving no support under your neck, so you kind of have to put something behind your neck to make it comfortable. First you played a series of R Rated movie trailers to my daughter and the other young people in the theater. Next you played the first 10 minutes of an R-rated horror, movie to the same audience. The AC was not on and the Theatre was incredibly hot. Multiple people, including myself, went out throughout the movie to us at the AC be turned on and it only ever was on periodically. Finally, at the end of the movie when the credits finished, the house lights did not come up. People had to use their phones, the lights on their phones, to collect their belongings and walk out without tripping. it was far and away the worst movie experience in my life.
