I really felt like myself and my hair was being taken care of. He spent more than 8 hours on my hair, but every second of it was with intention and thoughtful care. I've been seeing Roy for over a year now. I had previously tried several hairdressers all over NYC but couldn't find anyone that knew how to cut female short hair. My cousin found Roy and recommended him and after my first visit he fixed my hair colour and gave me the best cut I've had since being in NYC! I have been saving up for months in order to get my hair blonde and since I have typical asian black ish hair I knew this would cost an arm and a leg. Let me tell you, my hair looks like pure art... But I kept mentioning for him to do what would suite my skin tone and style best, also what is most natural/easy maintenance. I was guided to do shadow roots and go with beige blonde hair. Service: Wow, he is SO patient and amazingly attentive to every single detailed. He and his other assistant meticulously went through my hair like 3 times section by section and strand by strand. Roy cares and understands my hair better than I do. He also knows I'm pretty lazy with my hair and he does his best (which is pretty freaking amazing) to accommodate my need for good-looking hair with very little effort on my end. And every time see him, I learn something new about my hair or just hair in general. 6 months after I left his chair with a new color, cut and condition job, people were still complementing me on my hair. How? I have no idea. The color was faded and people thought I had purposely colored it that way. Recently, after this 6 months, I re-landed back in his chair for a re-color job. I asked for something vague (again, I'm awful) of "I want it to look better, maybe blended?" and he suggested a color and it looks awesome. My hair has also been growing up rather quickly and somehow the shape still looks good. How? I don't know. Roy magic. He has also remembered the history of my hair with him. Meaning, I went to a bunch of different places and people to get it bleached and dyed before I landed in his chair. Over the...maybe 5 times I've been in his chair since, he remembers much of what we discussed with regards to my hair (plans for it, needing to let it grow out before we do cooler things, etc). And, unlike most stylists, I love that he's adventurous with hair and hair color. What he also has over them, is that he's really good at what he does. If you're not into the crazy colors, he does that too. I've gone to him with tamer requests, and he knocks it out of the park. As a person, he is wonderful. Very kind, honest, and caring. When I first moved to New York, I struggled for a long time to find a new hair stylist I could trust. Having Roy work on my hair was a dream come true as he is one of the best stylists out there. Just check out his Instagram if you're unconvinced... Setting up an appointment with his assistant via text message was very easy and she was responsive and understanding when I had to reschedule due to an unexpected work engagement, or just had general questions about the appointment. What I appreciate most about Roy, besides his talent, is his honesty. He spent about 15 minutes looking at the inspiration pictures I brought in and, after some discussion, we settled on a game plan for my hair that was both feasible and in the realm of what I wanted. Throughout this time, he didn't hesitate to discourage me from another round of full bleach because I wanted to avoid further damaging/drying out my hair, and was very straightforward in informing me what my hair's current condition could or could not handle - rather than just selling me services or making false promises as so many other stylists unfortunately do. Additionally, Roy is very detail oriented. He took the time to explain each step of the process so that I was never confused about what product was being applied to my hair, or why it was necessary, or how long I would have to wait for it to process. I never felt rushed or uncomfortable, and always felt that I had his full attention. He even gave me pointers on how to best maintain my color. Roy was also really friendly and easy to talk to - his passion for hair is obvious in the way he works. Most admirable of all was that Roy even styled my hair at the end, mentioning that he enjoys seeing the process for any client from start to finish. Typically, I am used to being passed off to an assistant for blow-dry and curls (nothing wrong with that), but it's definitely extra points in my book when a stylist does that himself. Roy was my first NYC stylist, so i was nervous to try a new stylist but I was very happy with the end result. I requested an appointment via his personal Instagram where he asked for what I wanted and pictures of my current hair. I set up an appointment to update my grown-out balayage highlights and walked in with only a vague idea of what I wanted and a few inspiration pics. I sat down with Roy, conveyed what I was generally looking for - seamlessly melted blending and a cooler, ashy tone - and Roy was super up front and honest about what he could do for me and what I could actually expect given the condition of my hair. He took the time to walk me through all of the details and let me know that the level of lightening and ultimate outcome might not be exactly the same as the pictures I showed him. I've been going to Roy for cut/color for over a year now, and Roy goes beyond my expectations EVERY.TIME! So back in June, I had cut my long, balayage hair to a lob from Roy, and I went back yesterday for another cut and some color. I told him I wanted a shorter, blunt cut, and some color to add some lightness to my hair (my hair is naturally SUPER dark, almost black). JJ (his assistant) blow dried my hair first, and Roy came over to cut my hair. I've been to so many salons in the past, but never saw someone put so much effort and care to my hair when cutting. He's so precise, and makes sure you're feeling comfortable the whole time. For the color, I let him do whatever would work best (since I trust him) to my current hair. He initially said he would do a foilayage, but with the blunt cut he said a rooty blonde would look better. I wasn't really sure what that exactly was, and he showed me a couple pictures of rooty ashy blonde hairstyles, and I said let's go for it. Roy and his assistant, JJ, started bleaching my hair until my head was basically covered in aluminum foil. After 10-15 minutes, of course, my hair was SUPER orange, and Roy said if I wanted to achieve the ashy look, I would need to bleach again. I was a little nervous that my hair would break, but he assured he would NOT break my hair, as he uses quality products -- and YES, after two bleach sessions, and shampoo, my hair was blonde, not orange, and my hair felt softer than before (like whhhhat). So after rinsing off the bleach, half of my head was blonde, and I was a bit scared since it was my first time going this light. Roy and JJ applied toner for the roots, and to the rest of my hair, and after rinsing, my hair was more on the grey side than ashy-blonde. Roy came over and applied what he called a flash tone, to bring out more of the blonde - and then, magic! My hair came out to be the perfect, ashy-blonde, and I'm completely satisfied with the look. My hair does not only feel lighter with both the cut/color, but feels healthy and SOOO soft. I was there for about 6 hours, and the staff was so attentive, and made sure I was comfortable. Throughout the whole process, Roy explained what he would be doing next to my hair, and what the process would do. He's always so honest with his opinions on your hair, and what is possible/not with your current hair, which I appreciate so so much. If you're looking for a hair stylist in NYC, I highly recommend Unfade Hair Studio. I've only gotten my hair done by Roy, but the staff at Unfade are so friendly, and their work is amazing!! This salon is amazing. Absolutely spectacular. I came to Roy about two months ago asking him wha he n do for my hair. I use to do my own hair but then i saw the reviews he got for achieving fashion color. Getting my Asian hair to a silver is hard work. Roy told me exactly what he would need to do to process my hot pink hair into silver. I came back two months later after my pink hair couldn't fade anymore and then we started the process. It took a total of around 5-6 hours for it. Roy and his assistant meticulously bleached my hair and painted on the color. I was shocked at how detailed he was parting my hair while bleaching. Each step of the process, Roy took his time and never rushed. The bleached hair was incredibly even and my hair still feels healthy. This is the key part , any stylist can give you silver hair. The hard part about silver or pastels is achieving the color without breaking and frying the hair. My hair has never felt so great after two bleaching sessions and a coloring session. All the products being used at the salon were superb. They all smelled really great. Roy is an epic hair color specialist that knows exactly what he's doing and how to achieve it.
