Held hostage on the Pennsylvania turnpike you have few options for food (in my case breakfast???). One is Roy Roger's. When you are famished almost anything can taste good--for a brief period. Take Pork Bung for example--no RR does not sell the pig's anus (to some, a delicacy) but perhaps they should because I am sure it would rate higher than the stratospherically priced, god-awful "food" I foolishly ordered and almost instantly regretted ($14.75 + tip?). Everything about this culinary abomination was a travesty. The company probably spent ten fold on creating the appealing-looking food on the display board vs. developing, testing (I pity their Guinea pig taster), and selling the off-putting, rank tasting meal: To wit: Breakfast--certainly a misnomer Scrambled eggs: Say what? Rubber-like texture, oddly tasting, experiment in blandness. Rating F Hash Browns: Please rename, numerous (too many) coin-sized slices of tasteless "whatever" only palatable by a reasonably tasty ketchup. Rating D+ (quasi rescued by ketchup) Pork Sausage patty (?): Disagreeable taste and texture. In a cage match Bob Evan's would deliver a resounding KO. Portion (2 wafer-sized communion hosts): Minuscule size, fit for a goldfish--and they wouldn't like it either. (notice the word MINUScule starts with a negative: minus). Rating: D Ham: Stupidly ordered a side of ham which tasted as if it were in a non-heated buffet pan and wisely ignored by all--except me. Portion- Weightless razor thin pieces--not slices. Inedible. Rating: F- (so bad it was insulting) Muffin: Only thing even remotely worth mouth entry. But even that was tricky as the muffin promptly disintegrated. I tried to make an egg sandwich with the muffin and that was futile. But, not being able to stomach the other imposter food, I must've looked like a rat as I tried to eat the crumbs in the little and I mean little plastic container's bottom. Rating: C+ Beverage: Diet Coke self-service dispenser. Apparently someone forgot to clean the dispenser's lines as the DC's r taste was unrecognizable. Rating: F Tip Box: Are you F'ing kidding me? Tip for what? Uh, no thank you--and how dare you ask with a prominently placed and labeled obligatorily-baiting ridiculously out-of-place, nudge nudge give GIVE! Service: Apathetic. Even a sarcastic Cheshire cat or Arty the Clown smile would have been revelatory. Ambiance: If you enjoy the pungent smell of Pinesol-cleaned floors you'll be happy. Roy Rogers used to be one of my fave to go places at rest stops on road trips, but idk...this was disappointing on so many levels. 1) they didn't have curly fries and idk if they just don't do curly fries anymore or what, but that's sad. 2) they sold out of the roast beef sandwiches that my bf wanted to order 3) The med. mac and cheese was pretty awful tasting and didn't look like the picture on the menu. I got the 30pc meal, white meat only. It consisted of one breast and 2 wings. Not much meat in the wings, I wish they had a choice and price for each piece part to give customers their own choice. The food was warm when they gave it to me. It was only a few minutes wait and there was a long line of people waiting. Overall was a good experience. When I talk to my parents about Roy Rogers they always seem to bring up the fact that they used to be everywhere years ago. Even telling me to the point that we used to visit them on the regular. This must of been at a time that I don't remember. I definitely do not remember going to a restaurant named after a western star. That means I cannot recall what the fast food joint of yesterday was like. What I can talk about is what I happened to experience on a recent visit. One thing that I can say about the past is that there was nearly 600 locations at its peak and now, as of this month, there are only 43 remaining. A majority of them seem to be located along turnpikes. Odd but also kind of ingenious. Where it cuts down on competition because there are only so many spaces in a rest stop. Basically this is like any other fast food setup. You walk up, look over the menu, place your order, and then just wait. The one difference here that I did notice, and just happen to like, is that I can place the toppings I want on my burger and how much I want on it. Another thing I like about it is that you can choose your sides. It's not the traditional sides you get with your meal from a fast food place. For my meal I went with their Double Cheeseburger, Mashed Potatoes, and Cole Slaw. I know it's a bit of an unlikely fast food meal, but it is what I went with. To me it was like Roy Rogers stole Long John's sides menu and applied it to their menu. I'm not even mad at them about it. Seeing that I could top my burger however I wanted made it that much better. It was decent, but it was also just a burger from a fast food restaurant. I can't say anything bad about it as it is cooked to order, but I also cannot say anything good about it. The mashed potatoes and cole slaw were decent and a nice refresher for the sides. Decent meal and it got me through an on my way. Staff were professional and a bit entertaining. We arrived around 10am on a Sat. There was no one in line but 3 people waiting for their orders. It took about 20 min for us to get food. We had ordered 2 breakfast sandwiches. What we got was basically cold, and not the right sandwiches. They appeared to be badly understaffed and the staff they had was not very quick or competent. Last time I stop here to eat. This place was a decent spot to stop in the past, but has become bad. Bacon cheeseburger and fries - burger was over cooked and dried out, wasn't even warm as evidenced by the lack of any melting of the cheese. Fries were lukewarm and soggy. But worst part was you couldn't get a human to wait on you if you were using a credit card. They refused and told people to use the ordering station. No thank you. The next exit is only a few miles down the road and there is a Popeye's there now for those that want chicken, and an Arby's for roast beef folks, and a Wendy's if you want a burger. Roy Rogers, a shell of its former self, is trying to make a comeback after its former brand owners, be they Marriott or Hardees, pulled a Frank Lorenzo on the chain and left it like an empty escargot. Still, the positive changes are visible. Gone, however, are the great salad bars and the superdelicious mega RBs. And most of all, not to their credit, is the reliance on Animal Fat in their French Fries and Chicken Tenders. Which almost makes eating at RR a practice run at a cardiac care unit. This nutritional transgression takes it down two stars. This RR is in a busy Pennsylvania Turnpike rest stop, collocated with a Brioche store, a Sbarro, and a Starbucks. Besides the saturated fat, service is really good and friendly. It would be a perfect place to enjoy a quick and healthy lunch or dinner. Unfortunately that's not the case. read more

This is an eastbound Turnpike location. I did a separate review of the Travel Plaza and the god-awful food at PZA elsewhere, but I need to give credit where it is due. I don't expect much from a food court. Food court food is factory food. Lady Matilda, Horseface Bob, and I arrived at the Peter Camiel Travel Plaza on our way back from a business-laced vacation to Philadelphia. We were happy but tired. Within minutes, lines filled up at Starbucks, Roy Rogers, and even the gas station convenience store while people gave a wide berth to the PZA stand which looked like what happens in a freshman home economics class kitchen the first marking period of school. I decided to wait for Roy Rogers and I'm glad I did. While this wasn't my first visit, I assume that the place turns over management and crew every year, so it may as well be. I don't have expectations of such a place, but I can usually tell in the first 30 seconds if I'm going to get a decent meal or just unfulfilling arterial poison. The lines required everyone bust tail to get things done. I only saw one person in the kitchen, one person at the sides station and pass-through, and one person taking orders. The line was about 10-deep when I joined it and the crew worked in a rhythm to get things in and out quickly. There were only three people waiting in the "fixin's bar" at a time for their order, which was encouraging. I trust when the crew has focus and they aren't distracted. I ordered the Texas Pete Hot Sauce Chicken Sandwich, fries, and a simple cheeseburger for Lady Matilda. My sandwich was boilerplate chicken sandwich with a surprisingly tangy mix of Texas Pete's and mayo. It's nothing fancy, but it was quite satisfying. The fries were lightly salted and perhaps a little under-done, but good. Matilda said the cheeseburger was tasty (though, full disclosure, she had just tasted and spat out a PZA cheese slice, so anything more than that was a welcome relief). There was nothing wrong with this Roy Rogers as far as we could tell. It was clean and well kept, the staff was friendly, and the little food that we did get - chicken strips and a roast beef sandwich - were just fine and certainly comparable to other fast food places. The lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and pickles on the bar were fresh too. I will probably be headed up that way again soon, so I'll have to check it out again and get a full-blown lunch and see how that works out for us. This time, we just needed a snack that would hold us over until we got to our real food destination. And sure, it's a little more expensive than other fast food places, as is everything else on the turnpike. You should always expect to pay a bit more when you stop at rest stops, on any highway in the country. read more

When I lived in Northeast Philadelphia (Mayfair), I fondly remember when there was a Roy Rogers at the corner of the Roosevelt Blvd and Bustleton Ave. Sometime in the very early 1990's I remember getting a kids meal (I don't remember the food itself) there where the toy consisted of a plastic half-ring that was supposed to be some worm monster or something, where one end was a ball and the other a grabbing cup, so that if you got more of these toys, you could connect them. It was promptly lost within a few days, as anyone, child or adult could sense this was a crappy concept for a toy. This location changed to a Hardees before I left and is now a Boston Market, since Roy Rogers basically withered away to the captive market of those on the tolled limited access roads of the Northeast US. There's a reason. My next experience at a Roy Rogers was at a rest stop outside Boston sometime around 1999. The food was subpar, dry and salty, but edible. A step or two down from KFC. Most recently perhaps a couple years ago, a friend and I were on our way to Reading, and I was a bit famished, having not eaten that day. At this rest stop, is that a Roy Rogers I see? What a novelty! I haven't had that in a long time! I don't think its difficult to supply a restaurant that is right off a major turnpike, but apparently they only do so about once a year, because that's how it tasted. This is not chicken. A level of mummification is evident in the flesh. This is not mashed potatoes. This is wheel bearing grease. You don't have Dr. Pepper? You don't have root beer? I have to pay for barbecue sauce and you don't have honey mustard? What is this place? Had we been nuked some time between 476 and King of Prussia and I've just pulled into some desolate apocalyptic fallout shelter? My day would not be ruined; we later ate elsewhere near Reading and it wound up to be an enjoyable sojourn which resulted in my purchase of a sweet black derby. Perhaps I'm off-base expecting fine dining at a truck stop. Nevertheless, do yourself a favor and get something at Wawa before you pass through the tolls, or are at the mercy of those retailers in service plazas selling Korean-war vintage meal rations glazed in used motor oil. read more

No Stars for Roy Rogers on the PA turnpike!!!! This is the only Roy rogers in 80 miles of anywhere. My wife and i love Roy rogers chicken and couldn't get any because they broke the fryer down at 9 pm. We arrived at 920 and were told we had to only get items of the late night limited menu which according to the sign on the wall didn't take effect until 11 pm. There were 2-3 other customers behind us who also came there for the chicken and were turned away. There were absolutely no customer service skills displayed and the staff refused to accommodate the customers. terrible horrible horrible. Not that anyone is ever going to look at a Yelp review for a rest stop fast food place but here goes. Food mediocre but as expected. What was not was the person making the food took a customer who has the wrong order, took her sandwich which she already opened, and handled the sandwich with the same gloves then returned to prep without changing gloves. Then, when using the factories, because it is a highest rest stop, the aforementioned prep guy was also cleaning the bathroom (thank goodness with out his gloves but just though that was nasty). read more

Roy Rogers is attempting to revitilize itself after a long harsh couple of decades. The food was always great compared to it's competitors, especially Burger King and McDonalds. This particular location at the turnpike does boast great customer service from it's friendly staff, and it fast like "fast food" chains should be. I would definitely recommend a stop at this rest stop, not just for the glory that is Roy Rogers but also for the decently cleaned restrooms. read more
