I was warned of their disorganized appointment system, but figured it was worth the risk b/c of their affordable pricing / efficiency. Well, it wasn't. Called four weeks in advance to schedule date/time of move-out & re-confirmed two weeks ago. I get a call a week prior to my move-out date that they don't have me booked and spots are filled up, and were surprised when I told them I had called/talked to them twice. From my experience, I found Roy's very difficult to work with as they weren't the best communicators and more importantly, botched the appointment.. At first I was pretty apprehensive about using Roy, but he was recommended by a friend and the reviews on yelp were decent... He came for an estimate and he arrived 5 minutes early for the estimate! Wow, I was not expecting a tiny Asian guy! It's okay, I'm Asian, I can comment on his size. We have a huge apartment, and he quotes us $650 - awesome. Yes, Roy himself is not the best communicator. It seems like he doesn't take the best notes (he was about to hang up when I reminded him he didn't have my address to schedule the move), but I have to say, everything ran smoothly. Thankfully he called a week before to confirm our move. The movers were supposed to come at 8 but didn't come til 8:30. It was 5 guys (no Roy) with a 22' truck. They finished moving everything into the truck in about 2.5 hours. They wrapped up our furniture and bookcases really well with their own blankets and shrinkwrap, and took really good care of my bf's 7' tall cactus's (cactii?) They were done moving us into our new place by 2pm. The guys were really hard working, no complaints on that area. They even offered to put our bed back together at no charge. When time came to pay, they didn't even know what to charge us! I guess Roy never told them :) But we were honest and told them $650 and gave them a good tip. NOTE - When I called the city to obtain a permit for the moving day "no parking" signs, and told them my mover was Roy the Mover, she said they weren't in the system. I said, what about Roy the MoverS, she said nope. She said they needed his tax id # and copy of their certif of insurance. I called Roy and asked for this info, and he gave me his license # and said that # should work, and didn't give me anything about insurance. I called the city again and gave them his license #, but she said they don't deal with that type of #, and that it had to be the 9 digit tax id #. Suffice it to say we didn't want to deal with the headache. Luckily the apartment we moved out of has a hydrant in front, and the place we moved to already had "no parking signs" due to the street being worked on. So we decided to be bad and forgo the ermit. UNRELIABLE I called them to move a couch and loveseat, They were supposed to show up at 5:00. 5:15 rolls around and no mover. I called to find out where they were and they said that they could not make it until 7:30. Not only did they not call me to tell me this but they were unapologetic but they were not willing to rectify the problem. We used Roy three times and always had a really really experience. I once "cheated" on Roy and used people I found on craigslist. It was horrible to say the least. Let me start this off with a short and sweet review. I wouldn't waste my time with them. While the actual move will be cheap, the time you will waste waiting for them to return calls or show up to get an appraisal will not be worth it. I've used Roy once before and knew about the hassle, but figure maybe i just had bad luck. The second time around ended even worse. The process for getting a of Roy is as follows. You call one number which will then provide you another number to call and leave a message at. Then he says he will call you back that nigh after 930pm. This would be fine if it was actually the case, but I left messages for four straight days before receiving a callback. After receiving this call back Roy will setup a time for him to come to your apartment and appraise how much the move will cost. Be prepared for him to miss this time at least three or four times. He won't call and say he can't make it. He will simply not show up. If you do manage to get him on the phone he will give some lame excuse, pretend not to know who you are, or that he lost the paperwork. My last straw with Roy happened during this process. On his 3rd attempt at showing up on my place he was late. I called and he said he had gotten into an accident but would be there within the hour. Two hours passed so I called him a few times to no answer, but i can tell they someone has the phone as he is sending my calls to voice mail. I call him from a different phone number and he answers immediately. After going through the normal explaining who i am and having him say i don't have the paperwork, he finally says that someone told him to comeback on Monday. I asked him who, to which he responds the guy. This went back and forth for awhile before finally i asked him if he would like to simply reschedule for tomorrow. He gave the excuse that he had been in the city for three straight days. I asked if i should take my business elsewhere to which he responded yes. You might luck out and get good service, but if he doesn't respond to your calls or show up to your appt save yourself sometime a pick a reputable moving company. read more

I have used Roy movers before. Twice before this experience. Both times before I had no issues. There must be new management now. I was given a price for having them simply move my things in from pods into my house. 4 guys showed up with a truck and packing material as if I was moving out. They asked how much was I quoted and demanded almost two and a half times the price. I called the guy who I spoke to and he said the price quoted had only been an estimate and now I had to pay up. Perfect! I had a pod that was delivered from San Francisco, so I just needed help moving it from the street to a third floor apartment. (no elevator) Called Roy, had a bit of an odd conversation, but he got my information, and the guys showed up on time and got the whole thing done in less then an hour. Absolutely the best moving service you can get! Roy came to give me an estimate, and then right on the moving day they showed up - 5 guys! - packed my stuff in under an hour, drove it to the city from Skokie on a Saturday rush hour and moved me to a third floor in an old building in about another hour. They even fixed a broken wardrobe leg that was damaged in my previous move. Believe me, everything was done waaaaaaay better than I ever expected. I used Roy the Movers yesterday 3/15. They did an amazing job! They moved my 2 bedroom plus den in a 4th floor walk up into my boyfriend's place (2nd & 3rd floor walk-up) in 3 hours!! And I have a LOT of stuff (around 65 large and small boxes), bikes, sporting & camping gear, and large, heavy furniture. They even take apart your bed, put it back together, wrap up your TV, pictures, etc. Nothing got damaged at all.... Kiko's crew of 6 guys total are extremely hard-working, fast and did a great job. Roy is definitely a flake, but his guys did a great job for us. They showed up a half an hour early (maybe it's because we were their first appointment in the morning?). They wrapped everything very thoroughly and had us moved in less than two hours. I love the fact that Roy gives you a written estimate beforehand, and it's a flat fee rather than a per hour charge. Roy is very weird, so don't be surprised when he comes out for the estimate. Also, make sure the t.v. is turned off or he will sit there and watch it all day. read more

Okay, so when you first call Roy you might be a little skeptical since he is very unorganize but I promise he is the BEST! I have used Roy 4 times to move and it always goes perfectly. He shows up to give you a quote, if he can't come you can list off your belongings and he will quote you over the phone. They will wrap your dresses, so you can leave you clothes in them, put your hanging clothes in wardrobe boxes and wrap EVERYTHING! Everything is protected with sheets and plastic, nothing gets dirty. He has never shown up late (was actually early once), and has moved me each time in right around 2 hours. Everything is packed, you dont lift a finger and unpacked exactly where you want it. I used Roy the Mover based on the very strong recommendation of a friend of mine who used them a few times and the week before we moved. Frankly I wish I hadn't. I have moved a number of times in the city and have had much smoother and problem-free experiences. I will not recommend Roy the Mover to anyone and will certainly never use them again. Pros: - They are FAST. A 3 bedroom 1400 square feet condo got loaded into a Pod in 2 hours. That said, I had everything pretty much packed and ready to go in boxes etc. And it's their speed that was the problem because: Cons: They don't really listen to instructions. - We asked them to wrap what they were putting in the Pod. For the first hour, my wife stopped them multiple time because things were going in without any wrapping. - There were a number of things we said in the beginning were NOT going in, but they put them in nonetheless. This caused us a lot of problems. Pieces of furniture that weren't supposed to go ended up going in, leaving us with furniture with missing pieces: we can't sell these now, and we can't take them with us. We can't the pieces out of the Pod because we would have had to unload the ENTIRE Pod to get them. - They just came in and went at packing everything in sight -- they were going to pack my personal computer bag until my wife caught one of them. This chaotic packing system left us missing a bunch of things and now we don't know whether they're in the Pod or somewhere else. - I asked for a receipt to get reimbursed by my work and he just said, "No receipt man." I asked again with the same response. Called and followed up and that's the only answer I get. It all comes down to 1) they don't take instructions well, 2) communication was a huge problem throughout, and 3) it was a haphazard crazy experience. I still tipped because the guys worked and did their job. The "management" part just didn't work for me and it won't work for you either. Based on my friends' experience and the other reviews on here, these guys are inconsistent and I recommend not taking the chance. read more

I hired Roy and his movers last year and they did a fantastic job of moving into my one bedroom apartment. He came by and took a look at the furniture that needed moving and quoted me on it. The rate was exactly what he quoted me on moving day even though they definitely moved a few extras that I was planning on doing myself. They were very quick and wrapped everything up before moving it for no extra charge. They did break one lamp and to be honest it was probably on it's last leg anyway. Jesus and his crew moved us a few weeks ago from Lincoln Park to Roscoe Village. They came recommended from friends and I'm really glad we used them. The whole thing went very smoothly. Jesus and his guys showed up exactly on time, had us out of the old place in a little over an hour, and into our new place very quickly. Total time was about 3 hours. They were polite, careful, and efficient. We have a huge couch and they brought that over the deck so fast I didn't even notice that it happened. Price was very reasonable as well. Roy the Mover did a great job. I was a little worried after meeting Roy, but his guys were great. They called to say they would be about 30 minutes late, but since I was not done packing that was fine with me. They wrapped all the furniture very well, took apart and put things back together. They even hung my bike rack in the garage for no charge. Unlike other movers, they did not charge a different price for every roll of tape, box, etc. It was just a flat fee and very reasonable. My recent move could not have been easier, I'm still waiting from the other shoe to drop. I had some concerns when I first called for a quote and followed up to confirm my appointment, - I had been warned about this part. The movers showed up 10 minutes early and I wasn't finished packing. They started working right away, wrapping all of my things with blankets and saran. I even boxed some unwrapped plates that I plan on donating and they were so concerned about them chipping that they wrapped everything even though I told them it was ok. Out of my 2nd floor walk up in 50 minutes and completely finished in 2 hours or less. They took all of the stress out of moving and did an amazing job. I never want to move again after this experience, however next time I will call Roy the Mover right away! read more

What else is there to say about Roy the Mover that hasn't already been said below. He is the most efficient and cost effective mover you will ever find. The hiccup, you need to just remind him a few days and then perhaps the night before your move. Strange but true He is less than personable but really is a great guy. How do I know this? Long-term relationship...Roy has helped me move apartments, houses, parents houses, furniture bought off of craigslist, and on and on. Recently his guys moved a table for us and one of the movers said to another, remember when we moved them in. They remembered a move from SEVEN years ago. He hires quality guys, not one of these companies that picks guys up on off the streets for the business rush at the beginning and end of the month. Use Roy the Mover, you won't be sorry. But, what's the worst part of moving? Packing. I recently discovered the Roy counterpart except someone who is extremely responsive! Household Packing Specialists (Jackie et al) will come and pack you (even unpack if you wish). DON'T EVER USE ROY THE MOVER. HE'S AN UNRELIABLE, TERRIBLE, UNORGANIZED PERSON. I had used Roy the Mover a few times in the past and was impressed with the inexpensive cost and professionalism for a bunch of people who are uninsured and probably don't get paid for their labor. I had even given his name out to about 5 friends to use. This is what just happened: I had to call him about 5 times to remind him of my move and on Wednesday, he took all of my information including the addresses involved in the move and my phone number. We called on Friday to confirm again (we're moving Saturday morning and know he's unreliable), and he said he does not have us on his list. He said he never talked to us (which is BS, he spoke with us approximately 5 separate times) and that he did not have us written down. So, in an hour's time we had to find another company to move me out of my apartment since I had only a window of time signed up for the elevator and my lease is up!!! WTF? This was ridiculous. He should not have any business. He's unreliable, untrustworthy, uninsured, unprofessional, and every other un-word I can think of. NEVER USE HIM. HE SUCKS. read more

My winter move could not have been handled better on a summer day...at least as far as I was concerned! A mover is a mover but you cannot beat the flat rate quote or the pace maintained by the movers. I was grateful for the care taken with wrapping my leather sectional. Roy the mover rocks. I just needed a couple pieces of furniture moved, but he did it with just 2 day's notice, he gave me the lowest quote (after already calling five other movers), and he was super fast - once he got to my place, he was in and out in 20 minutes, and I live in a 2nd floor walkup. I mostly agree with the rest of the reviews, but I would say he's just more laid back and direct than surly. Also, I had no problem whatsoever tracking him down and confirming, but maybe that's because I scheduled it 2 days before I needed the stuff moved. As for the couple of negative reviews that he was too costly, I don't know where in the world y'all think you'll find any movers cheaper than Roy. He's right - go to a regular moving company and spend a MINIMUM of $250 and pay ridiculous insurance fees. Honestly, I got quotes for several other movers, and there was no one cheaper - plus Roy is SO fast, and my pieces arrived in perfect condition. There were no extra charges at all - just the flat rate he quoted, and you don't pay until your things are safely moved in to your place. Think about it - he has 2-3 or more guys, a big ol' truck, gas, materials for wrapping furniture, etc. You think he's going to do that all for free? Can you say horrible!!! OK--I have used this company for moves before and they were fast and cheap. But, my recent experience has left me with a better understanding of how other reviewers have experienced their unique "service". I referred a good friend who was in a very difficult situation and needed to move. We called and spoke to Roy on Saturday, set the move for a Monday. When my friend called back Monday morning to confirm that they would be on time for the afternoon move, he acted like he had never heard of her before or the appointment. When I called, he finally admitted he had scheduled something with us, but blamed US for not calling to confirm with him on Sunday (he never mentioned that we needed to, although he "tells clients to call the day before"). Absolutely great experience....again. This is the 2nd time I've used Roy the Mover. This time I was moving out of a 3 story walk-up, to a new home. They were very inexpensive, yet top notch professional. Don't let the first phone call scare you away. It may not sound like you're dealing with a polished professional service, but the job they do is fantastic. They arrived with a crew of 5. They were 10 minutes early, which was a plus for me. Each person was polite, respectful and ready to work. After a handshake, they walk through my place, decided where to start and dug right in. It was a rainy day and they came prepared. Every piece of furniture was covered in a blanket and then wrapped in wide cling wrap before taking it outside. They even disassembled my bed frame and a small kitchen table for me. Within an hour they had my 3rd floor, 1BR apartment empty and we were on the road to my home. At my home they took effort to mind the new carpeting. They put blankets and runners at the landing and up the stairs to avoid tracking in water and mud. They unloaded the truck quickly, taking all pieces to their desired rooms, they reassembled my bed frame and placed the box spring, headboard and mattress in their places. After unwrapping everything, I paid cash and a nice tip and they were on their way. All in all, I couldn't have asked for a better move. The crew was 100% professional and very polite. They didn't lose or break anything. They were mindful of the walls as they moved items up stairs... and they were FAST. The whole move was completed in under 2 hours. I have used Roy Mover twice. First time his crew came in and refused to pick up anything that was in plastic bags like comforters etc. It was raining. The entire crew picked up whatever they considered big. Went outside and sat down in their truck. I literally begged them and offered more money, but they didn't move. They went to my new location and unloaded the stuff. I had to move rest of the stuff. Imagine I paid $275 to them for one bedroom move and then had to take several trips between my old and new locations same day moving small stuff. Their mantra was whatever was in the boxes they would only move that. Now after little over a year later, when I needed to move, I called Roy again (considering that was my fault since I didn't pack properly last time). He came over, provided an estimate, looked inside the closets to figure out how many boxes will be there. I took him to storage space and showed him that stuff. He provided an estimate. His crew came out on moving day. Looked at the stuff and told me they will move only large stuff including large boxes only. I had only couple large boxes (4;x6'). Everything else was packed in relatively smaller boxes but still 2'x2'. They asked me exactly double the price if I needed to move the boxes or else they leave. I called Roy. He didn't try to stand behind his estimate. He said the folks who were there I needed to deal with them. If they are saying they need more money, then they need more money and if I want to have them do the move, then I will have to pay them whatever they are asking. I ended up negotiating a new price. It was too late for me to look for other options. I would say he is a rip. Do NOT hire his services unless you are looking for headache. You probably are better off renting your own U-Haul and finding folks from Craiglist. I have done this in the past and that worked out pretty well. read more

Roy the Movers are great! I called them literally last minute as our previously booked movers failed miserably. We spoke with Jesus, the guy in charge, who said he could move our house the next day. They showed up right on time, 4 guys in total, and emptied my 3bd, 3ba house in 2 HOURS!! They are super fast! They then moved us into the new place equally fast. Some of our big stuff couldn't go in through the front door and I panicked but they never seemed phased by it. They lowered all those alrge items down into the basement patio and then inside. It was a sight to see! If they did out of state moves, I would've booked them already for our move next summer! In short, great group of guys who work fast, are reasonable in their price, and very professional. Plus, its always good to support a small business in our city. read more

Wish could give him negative rating! Had a personal estimate by the owner 4 to 5 days prior to moving. Asked him if he was available to move on the coming Sunday. After checking his schedule he said "no problems". Gave me the contract and said they'll be very early --- 9a.m. Moving day came... 9am - none came, 10 am - none came. I started to make phone calls on the phone numbers on the contract.... No answer on all numbers. So, we used Roy back in 2009 to move from our condo in Uptown to Lombard, we had to call a couple of times to remind him, but they did show up and get the move done... everything went fine. However, this year we were moving from Lombard to Westmont and we had to call Roy about 6 times before he finally came to see what needed moving... mind you we made two previous appointments to check on that he cancelled when we double checked if he was showing up for. Anyways, he came saw everything... we set a price, a time and a date. Low and behold we call him this past Friday for our move next Saturday and he tells us he doesn't have anything for us. We ask if he's kidding since we have a copy of his paperwork right in front of us and he then goes and eventually finds it... he tells us "I found it, but I can't do it, because I have another client... you guys never called to confirm" Excuse us... we set a date time and price and now we're calling with a week to go, to make sure we're all square... and he again just repeats you didn't call to confirm. JACKASS. Complete disorganization... I won't use him ever again and will tell friends to stay away. We scrambled and luckily found some other movers for this Saturday. Best moving experience EVER!! JR came to the house, gave us a free quote and explained the whole process. He showed up on moving day a few minutes early, and he and his team went to work moving our 3 bedroom, 2-story home into our new 4-bedroom ranch home. They worked for 11 1/2 hours and never took a break. We were impressed with their professionalism and amazing work ethic!! Awful, but the joke is on me since I did read many of the horrible reviews on Yelp and decided to call anyways because of the low prices. Called on a Wednesday to schedule an appointment for him to quote the job on Friday afternoon. My husband and I both took off work early on Friday so that we could both be there for the 4pm appointment. 5:15 rolls around and I call him again and he acts like he doesn't know who I was and he couldn't possibly come by because he's in the middle of a move. He tried to quickly get off the phone and said he'd be here Sunday morning at 8am (he didn't bother to take down my information, so I assumed we'd get blown-off once again). Saturday morning, we get a call at 8am waking us up, "U want a move?" My husband attempted to explain to him the inconvenience he had caused us with taking off work, and Roy hung up on him. Horrible!!! I called 6 weeeks prior to move date. Went over all the information and accepted the quote. They asked me to call 1 week prior to move date to remind them. When I called 8 days prior he was very confused. Asked me to call back an hour later because he was driving When I called back an hour later he stated he was still driving. he took down my number and said he would call me when he was done driving. At 10pm he called me and had no clue of this scheduled move. Wanted all the information all over again. These guys did an awesome job for us. They moved a 1 bedroom apt, up 4 flights of stairs in 2 hours. They did it quickly and carefully, and even took apart the bed and tv stand and put it back together. They are way cheaper then other companies around ($300 for the move). The only issue is getting a hold of them, however as long as you call a couple of days before the move they will show up, and do a great job! Keep in mind that they don't have the best customer service, but that's not what your paying them for. read more

I called Roy on Saturday @ 11.00 AM, they came in less than 30 mins, and there were 7 guys, and they charged a flat rate of $400.00, and moved all my furniture in less than 3 hrs. My wife was so impressed that gave a tip of $50.00. Thanks Roy. read more
