If I could give these guys 6 stars, I would. We did not plan our move super well, and needed someone to come help with our large items ASAP. We called them on Easter Sunday at 7:15 am hoping they might be able to help us out. They picked up immediately and said they could be at our apartment as soon as 8:00 am!! On Easter Sunday!!!! It was an Easter miracle! They charged 70 bucks an hour for two guys, or offered us 4 guys for 140 an hour. We took two guys since we said we would be helping out as well. It was an additional $100 for the truck rental on their end and they called us the moment they were outside. There were no additional side charges. Period. Just $100 dollars plus $70 per hour. SUPER good deal! I received a quote from one other place, and the other place had me fill out a huge quote for, and quoted me over 500. We had a bunch of other boxes and small stuff but told them to just grab the big stuff. In total we had the following items to move: 1 couch that pulled out to a queen sized bed, 1 dining room hutch, 1 huge cat tree, 1 enormous dining room table, 1 queen sized bed and giant mattress, 1 large dresser, 1 TV stand, 1 coffee table, 1 kitchen block/cart, 1 large cupboard, 1 Huge desk with a versa desk on top, 1 entry way bench, and 1 set of file cabinet drawers. We lived on the first floor of an apartment building (still had a flight of stairs to go down) and we were moving to the 2nd floor of a new place just down the street (still had about 3 flights of stairs). Both places had very difficult back stairwells (common with old apartment buildings) to maneuver. Mark and William showed up and did an absolutely stellar job. They took a total of 2.5 hours and took incredible care of every one of our items. In total, our final bill $275. These guys rocked and the price was so reasonable. I was literally in shock watching how quickly and efficiently they moved. They were lifting things as if the items weighed nothing. At one point one of them had the set of file cabinet drawers strapped to their back and just breezed up the back stairs. I literally couldn't believe it! They were so so so friendly and kind. They showed up on time, worked hard, had a pleasant attitude. What more can you ask? Oh, did I mention that Mark is Jamaican and comes with all the associated pleasantry? Moving can be stressful and he put me at ease. It was a quick and painless. I called last minute and they helped last minute. Moved a 1 BR apartment across town. Total cost was ~450+tip for 4 guys for 3 hours. There was no nickel and dime add on fees. They had equipment, they have an hourly rate, they showed up on time, and... boom! I'm moved! Got pushed back to 9pm durning moving day. 2 guy showed up at 10pm and said they need more people for my stuffs?! Also said they need to help another person to move before me because they just found out I was moving from Evanston to Chicago and that person was within Evanston(btw this person waited a whole day as well). Did I provide info and schedule time slots at the beginning just for nothing? One of the guys said mark his words he will be back in 2 hrs and will definitely help me to move. Now is 12:45PM the next day no call back no show no nothing. My plan has been completely messed up as I will be traveling overseas 1 days after moving. We called in panic and his crew literally came to save us from where we were stuck to drive our truck and unload our items in our new place! I am moved into my new place and very happy with the decision I made to hire A & R Moving! Mark and his crew were able to get me moved out and in in under 4 hours and only charged me for 3! That's very kind of them. My move was a last-minute booking. I emailed through YELP on a Saturday and was moved in by 1:30pm Monday. They guys were extremely professional and only engaged in conversation when I initiated it. They brought their own drinks and didn't ask me for anything which was really nice. They came to work and they were very careful with all of my items, making sure to completely clear out my former apartment and get everything into my new place and setting up my bed and table again. We had an AMAZING experience with A&R Moving! I HIGHLY recommend them! After dealing with a 6 hour delay (despite having made a reservation one week in advance) and the worst customer service of all time from a truly awful company called Midway Moving, IT WAS SUCH A RELIEF TO WORK WITH A&R. We called them around 7 PM (when most other places were closed or booked) and they were very friendly, offering to stop by on their way back to the office from another job. After looking around our apartment, they told us the truck they had with them was big enough and they could do the job with three movers (Midway insisted they use four...for a two-bedroom student apartment in which there was one living room set, one full bedroom set, two desks, a futon, and some boxes and smaller items). They immediately got to work. They took the sectional apart and wrapped it in plastic, then proceeded to move the large furniture as well as the smaller items down our three-story walk-up with ease. We were already impressed by the care they took with our glass coffee table and end table, but they took it a step further by taking apart our fairly complicated platform bed quickly, and neatly packaging the various pieces. They were all very friendly and one of the men, Marcus, chatted with my mom while taking the bed apart. After about two hours, the truck was fully loaded and they drove to the storage facility. We pitched in with the smaller items to speed up the process (it was late and we knew they had already had some other jobs that day) but they did all of the heavy lifting and arranged everything inside the unit. Everything fit perfectly! Even though it was late and they had not expected to be moving anyone at that time, they were always positive and never gave any indication that our move was an inconvenience. They were true to their original quote and did not charge us for the plastic wrap or the cardboard boxes they used. We had an EXTREMELY PLEASANT experience with A&R Moving. They were fast, efficient, and friendly and they were careful with our furniture. PLUS THEY WERE CHEAPER THAN MIDWAY! We will definitely be using them again when we move our belongings out of the unit! read more

I called Mark and his team to move my things 2 days before my move in date and they were happy to do it. Unlike other moving companies who ask you to do it weeks in advance. My flight got delayed and they didn't mind that everything got pushed back a few hours. They were super careful and kind about my stuff despite moving stuff from two apartments into another apartment. They are also very familiar with the Evanston area so they know almost all the apartments and where the loading decks are located! Awesome service! Great price! read more

Working with A&R movers was fantastic. It was my first time moving with a company without my parents, and quite daunting at first, but Mark and his crew made a really comfortable experience for me. I moved from Evanston to River North, Chicago, and the staff was friendly, accommodating, and respectful. List of reasons why they're great: 1. I had called only two days prior to my move date, asking to schedule a time. They said "of course" and came on time, at 9AM in the morning. 2. I can be forgetful -- I completely forgot to take my bed. I only realized I had forgotten it after they all left! So I called back and asked if they could please pick it up and deliver it to me, and they did with no fuss, and charged only a small fee. What could have been a huge hassle otherwise ended up being quite simple. 3. Mark only charged for 2.5 hours even though the whole process took more than 3.5 hours (plus, he went back to Evanston to find my bed). 4. I had a lot of stuff that I can't pack into boxes, like vases with live flowers that I didn't want to ruin/throw out. When I told Mark and his crew about this, they didn't laugh, but instead respected my wishes and transported everything as is. 5. NOTHING BROKE! Everything was perfect. 6. They're just really nice guys. Mark and his crew (there was Mike, and another man I didn't get a chance to talk to as much) talked to me about food, moving to America, reality television, and a lot of other things that made the day fun. I have used Mark / A & R Moving now twice and will be using them again. Both moves were short notice and we were accommodated both times. They are careful with everything, wrap what needs it, are able to break down and rebuild IKEA furniture which I hate doing myself, and are happy movers which makes it much better for those of us who aren't. I would recommend these guys. Based on the positive reviews on Yelp, I called and scheduled A & R to move me from my 3rd floor condo into a single family home. It was difficult to move some of the furniture based on the set-up of my old place, but they were patient, persistent, and were able to disassemble (and reassemble) things when necessary. I felt the service was priced fairly (as mentioned before they do not nickel-and-dime you), the crew was positive and easy to deal with, and I would not hesitate to hire them again in the future. read more

DO NOT USE!!!!! Scheduled a move with A&R that was confirmed by phone and email. Movers did not show up at appointed time 1:00 pm. Called them and was told I was not put on their schedule, but they remembered booking it. I was asked to send the email confirmation, which I did. I was told they would arrive in 20 minutes ( 1 1/4 hours past scheduled time), they did not come. Called again... was told same 20 minute story. My husband confirmed a July 2015 move with the owner several months earlier and then again the week of our move. Both times, the owner confirmed the move with 3 guys over e-mail. We were scheduled for 8am the morning of our move and, after an hour of calling without an answer and leaving voicemails, I finally reached the owner who said that he thought it was 9am and was at Howard and Western (we lived about 20 minutes South of there). He sounded like he was sleeping. I called again at 9:30 wondering where they were and he said that they were in the process of getting a few guys together and were at Howard and Western (still). I explained that if they don't show up at 10am, I will have to cancel the move and find someone else. The owner promised me that he would be there at 10 and when they didn't show up, I called and told them to cancel the move. He said that they were close and trying to be nice, I told them they had 15 minutes. They showed up at 10:20 with 4 guys instead of 3, which I thought might compensate. The move went relatively smoothly until the end when it came time to pay. They charged me for 4 guys and I pulled up the e-mail from my husband which said the quote for 3 guys, which they honored. Had i not brought it up, they would not have said anything. What took me over the edge is when they poked a large hole in a lamp that I told them that they needed to be careful with. I saw them do it when they were getting into the elevator despite the apartment complex's maintenance man telling them to be careful and that one of the things they were holding was going to poke a hole in our lamp shade. The mover didn't seem to notice or care. When I brought it up as they were leaving, all 4 of them denied it including the owner. I'm glad I hadn't paid them yet because I had to negotiate with the owner for compensation and he was less than apologetic about it. I CANNOT recommend A&R. They were unexplainably late, dishonest, and not willing to do much in terms of customer service. Oh, and did I mention they lost our TV remote? read more

Pros: They were quick, efficient and careful. They moved my daughter's stuff from a storage unit and carried it up to her 3rd floor apartment (no elevator). In addition they unpacked our truck full of items helped put together her ikea bed. Cons: They were 20 minutes late BUT they discounted their original quoted prices and still worked two hours. Update - Mark followed up to try to make things right. He refunded $200 for the scratched up table and offered to fix some of the scratches following week. However, he was unable to find time to fix any of my expensive furniture. Furthermore, I recently noticed my $2,500 sofa set is also scratched and dented on the corners and top. He obviously cannot fix all this furniture so I don't have this expectation from him. Even though he cares about the business, I would not recommend his company due to lack of accountability and reliability. NOTE - I believe the reason he has mostly 5 star reviews is that mark calls up people who give 2 stars or less and requests to remove those reviews in change of compensation. He tried to do the same with me. I would have removed my review perhaps had he followed through on his promise to fix the furniture. --------------------------- While A & R moving were cheaper than most other quotes, at the end of the day - you get what you pay for. My understanding is that the movers Mark hires for the job are not full time professionals because they don't have a protocol for handling furniture or moving heavy items. On the flip side, all the movers were really friendly and pleasant to talk to. I had the following issues and will not go with these movers again - (1) After explaining numerous times that my furniture was expensive, I see several scratches and marks on multiple items (dresser/bed/side table) (2) They ran out of blankets for the furniture and starting using plastic to cover furniture, which did not help. (3) One of the movers broke a bulb in the hallway but did not clean up the mess right away or replace the bulb later on. (4) Out of 4 movers, only 2 movers knew how to dissemble and assemble furniture and it took them quite a while to do so. I have had movers who do these things very efficiently, quickly, and meticulously. However, these guys had a challenging time figuring out how to assemble everything back. They also ended up not using all the screws they took out after dissembling furniture because they were in a hurry (everything looks fine currently so I am hoping nothing is indeed left loose) (5) They did not have one of the key pieces of tools (L wrench set) and fortunately because my husband had a tool box, they ended up using his' for the entire day. At the end of the day, I had to remember to get it back from them. (6) A & R had apparently overbooked and because the guys took longer than expected, he called and yelled at the guys multiple times over phone. As a customer, I felt this was a tad unprofessional. (7) I was quoted and had a deal for $450 but at the end of the day, I was charged $ 600, which I was OK paying given the amount of time the guys took but felt it was slightly unfair to quote a lower price in the beginning when you know it could take so much more long While I got my items moved and I am happily living in my new place, I will not be going with these guys again. It's not worth the risk especially if you have expensive furniture. Probably OK to use if you have boxes only and timing doesn't matter much. read more

Mark, the owner, is a good guy. He really cares about his business and reputation. The work was very unprofessional, however, by the team he brought. Throwing pillows and damaging my furniture but Mark did his very best to remedy the situation. I'm not super enthused about my move. I gave 3 stars because it eventually got done, the guys who eventually came out were nice and professional, and it was inexpensive. But the management sent people out half an hour later than the appointed time, and when they did show up, it was ONE guy as opposed to the three that we had discussed. John, the one guy who showed up, says he didn't now what happened to the others. He was very efficient and started clearing out my storage unit by himself. I called Mark, the manager, multiple times and kept hearing "oh the guys are coming, they're on their way, etc." An hour after the appointed time, as John was working all by himself, I called Mark again and told him I needed him to call up different people. He said he could send some guys from Highland Park (to Evanston), which took over an hour. At this point John was basically done, and we went over to my house for the other half of my stuff. They got it done quickly and safely, and I appreciate that at least. Special thanks to John for working so hard! There seem to be a lot of good reviews for these guys, so maybe it was a fluke, but hopefully the management will put measures into place to make sure something like this doesn't happen again... read more

We moved here from Georgia with a Penske truck loaded with our stuff! We got lost and could not find our way to our apartment with the "truck routes". We called Mark, and he send his crew to come get us and drive the truck to our new apartment. We called Mark almost in tears, and he was on a job, but still picked up the phone and sent his two men to come get the truck for us. They did an awesome job unloading and making sure they asked where we wanted each box or piece of furniture. They then helped us drive the truck back to return to Penske!!!!! And they never once charged us extra for having to come get us or returning the truck!!!! They even had to come back the next morning and actually showed up!!!!! They will do whatever it takes to finish the job! And to finish it well!We are truly thankful for them and will forever use them from now on! We owe our move in to Mark and his crew!!! AWFUL. I was scheduled for a 2pm move with packing services. I confirmed multiple times and was told we were all set. 2pm came and went-I called and was told that they'd be there by 3. Annoying, but not a huge deal. 3pm came and went. I called again. Was told they were "on their way" no time frame provided. Mark then asked me to confirm if I was in Chicago or a suburb. Obviously they weren't on there way since they didn't even remember the address. He said they'd be there soon. Around 4 they still weren't there. I called again and was told they were "two blocks away but there's traffic". 4:30 still not there. They eventually pulled up at 4:45-almost 3 hours late in this sketchy unmarked truck. There were 3 guys instead of the 4 I was promised. They then told me they had shrink wrap and only shrink wrap for packing supplies. They "ran out" of boxes. They then asked if there was a store somewhere they could buy some. At that point I told them to leave. Mark asked if they should come back tomorrow. Absolutely not. Worst moving experience ever.
