Horrible!!! Ice tea tasted like coffee. Sausage gravy was runny with chunks of link sausage in it. Food was not hot. Will not go back.

Two starving travelers had just finished watching a World Cup match in Kansas City and headed over to Blue Springs in search of food. By pure chance, we ended up choosing a well-known local restaurant. The calamari was very good -- proper, full-sized squid rings with a relatively light coating. After being battered by a downpour, it was exactly the kind of thing you want to calm yourself down with: fat and protein. The hamburger was also very well made. During happy hour, the value for money was especially good, and it came with grilled vegetables, which made the whole meal feel surprisingly well balanced. It was my first time trying Country Fried Steak. My companion was not really a fan, but after looking it up later, I realized that it is a distinctly American comfort food. Well... had I not already been full, I probably could have helped him out with half of it. The onion rings that came as a side also looked excellent -- big, substantial rings, not those tiny chain-restaurant ones that almost look like calamari. The Caesar Salad was very good too. I did not use much of the dressing, but honestly, the cheese and vegetables were already enough for me. To sum it up, if time allowed, I would probably replace the hamburger with something more distinctly local next time. To be fair, we had barely eaten anything for about 12 hours before walking in, so we were not exactly in the mood to take risks. And as it turned out, spending more than $50 on a two-person bowl at the stadium was nowhere near as satisfying as holding out a little longer for a genuinely good local meal in the Kansas City area -- with a beer on top of that. Absolutely worth it.

However, the food was lacking. We have had the pot roast nachos many time before, and this visit, it was lacking several toppings (Cheese, corn) and very little pot roast and peppers. Looked like they tried to cover it with sauce thinking we would not notice. We did run into issues with Service in previous visits - waitress cursing about the soda machine, forgot to add an entree and offered "well, i have a couple extra carrot cakes in the back". Oh gee, I'm glad we are getting scraps for her lack of ability. We haven't seen that waitress since out last awful interaction with her, so hopefully she is no longer there.

The butter was super fluffy and light and the bread was a great crunchy texture, but other than that I feel like it lacked that extra flavor to take it up a notch. We also tried the calamari which was pretty good. For my entree I had the Romano chicken alla vodka. It was genuinely so so good! I feel like the ambiance was okay, it was packed and really loud but I figure that's just because it was a holiday. It was also weirdly dark in there which I'm not a fan of. Our waiter was nice but smelled like he just got back from smoking a cigarette every time he came to the table.

Although the sandwich was double wrapped in paper, it chilled enough to alter the texture of the grilled bread. Lesson learned! I was pleasantly greeted at the drive through menu and wonder of wonders (!) the communications were clear, quick and easy. I was FURTHER impressed that Angie, the cashier at the window, presented me with a broad smile and welcoming attitude. Pleasant service is always a joy! I failed to see the name tag on the colorfully haired young lady who delivered my to-go bag. She too was exceedingly polite. It must be a great place to work based upon the happy employees! The parking lot is large and the easy to maneuver. The parking lot always spotless - - zero trash to be seen. As to the ambiance? I have nothing to report, as I didn't step foot inside the place. That's when we spotted the shining beacon of hope: Whataburger. Since we don't have them back home, it was basically a moral obligation to stop. We went classic with burgers, fries, onion rings, a shake, and yes, an apple pie. The jalapeño ranch and spicy ketchup? Game changers. Everything came out hot, fresh, and delicious. The place was super clean and the staff could not have been friendlier. I ordered a small drink, but they were out of cups so they handed me a large instead. Free upgrade? Don't mind if I do. The real hero of the night, though, was the fried apple pie. Crispy outside, molten lava inside, and so good it deserved its own standing ovation. If they sprinkled it with cinnamon sugar, I might have written this review from the afterlife. All in all, it was the perfect ending to a long road trip evening. Whataburger definitely delivered the late-night comfort food magic we needed.
