When traveling I always try to find a local place that's a bit off the fast food map. After all why have Jack In The Box in MO when I could have the exact same meal in AZ where I live. So when a quick Yelp search turned up Tara's Malt Shop with decent reviews you know I just had to try it. I don't even remember when I last heard the term Malt Shop being used. I think it may have been around the last watched Grease. The inside is what you would expect, although not exactly Five and Diner'ish, it did fit the Malt Shop vibe nicely with a James Dean cutout and old signs on the walls. Through a side door in the restaurant you can enter an antiques store which looked large and interesting but being pressed for time I had to skip it. I ordered the double bacon cheeseburger with a side of rings and a peanut butter shake. The burger didn't disappoint with nice thick cut bacon and fresh tasting burger patties. The rings were light and not overly greasy and the shake was spot on delicious. I'm so glad I decided not to eat one more repetitive meal at Panda Express or Chipotle and tried something new. Tara's did not disappoint.

Came again today now that the dining room has reopened. Social distancing and cleaning were very evident, they are taking it seriously (covid-19). Had today's special: a chili dog with fries and a drink for $8.50. Portion size was great that was a real meal! My husband ordered the Reuben. Served hot and juicy he was pleased with it though a little more dressing would have been welcome. Service was so pleasant! Please note: we had an offer from the "entertainment book" but it wasn't accepted. They apparently never authorized the publisher to include them and have tried to get removed. This was the second restaurant that has told me that so going forward "entertainment book" has now lost my business. But Tara's? We'll keep coming!!! Our communities need local places like this one.

Awesome little cafe in Belton, MO those gals in there work hard, it's busy cause it's really good food and a great experience! Staff was super friendly and the decor is a throw back to the good'ol days. The sweet potato fries are amazing! They have daily specials and also serve ice cream and sundaes. Great place to eat!

What a great find! Was not about to pass by a place that reads, "malt shop" in this day and age. You just don't see that anymore. Ordered the special, a sloppy joe. Now that's a blast from the past. It was just as I remember it as a child. The chocolate malt was also right out of the childhood memory scrapbook. Thick, rich and malty. They not only gave the malt glass full of chocolate malt but the tin/metal cup they made the malt in. What a way to spend a rainy day!!

Food was good and came out quickly. I also liked the theme, old school malt style. Give this place a try next time you are driving through this town and considering a drive through.

Cute little old school diner in a historic building serving up diner-like food. Although the menu is smaller, the burger, onion rings and grilled ham and cheese we ordered were great. My favorite part was the peanut butter my peanut butter mall (duh!). As an added bonus, Tara's is attached to an antique store, so you can browse while your food is being cooked!

I guess I have not reviewed Tara's Because I take it for granted...this is an awesome little home town diner! Foot is already great and staff is always helpful and with it! Lots of locals come in for a great meal and conversation. There are daily specials that are amazing and a great value. The malt shop portion is not to be missed! Nothing better than a fresh made shake on a hot summer day!! Don't forget to save room for fresh made desserts too!

Good food, nice staff, prices weren't too high. I'd go back. The down town area was nice and offered a nice walk after.

It's alive with the quite wave of conversations washing over the restaurant this Saturday evening…read more Despite the busy atmosphere, the receptionist finds us a table quickly and adjusts to our changing plans with kids seating. Our waitress, August, has a bright smile and outgoing personality. She is a genuinely nice person. A perfect contrast to our my family's day, which has been filled with miserable deep cleaning for spring. She commiserates with our care worn state and later on with desert leaves us a sweet message of encouragement. Our waitress suggests we try an Ultra drink... and my wife does, finding it refreshing. I mention I'm a heavy drinker... of water and she comes back with a second glass so I won't be waiting on her with the busy atmosphere. We never feel neglected despite her having a big table with more than ten people. The Ribeye steaks we order are cooked to perfection and have a good peppery flavor, and the sides are a great compliment. The corn reminds us of Mexican street corn. The atmosphere is perfect for conversation as it never gets too loud for us, especially if you get one of their booths. Yes... I would recommend you eat at this Long Horn.
