My first bucket of chicken was unfortunately dry and unappetizing. It would have been a chore to eat. When I asked the manager Jeff, if this was "normal," he immediately offered a fresh batch without hesitation. He even gave me a heads-up that it was too hot to eat right away. My mom and I have been looking for quite some time for a really good fried chicken joint in Northern Virginia (yes, we've tried all the other name brands, and while not bad, they were just not what we were looking for). We visited Royal Farms, Chantilly location, and were fortunate enough to be served by Laura. From the moment we approached the counter, she greeted us with a warm smile and a friendly attitude that instantly made me feel welcome. She is extremely affable. We were not disappointed with the chicken. It was dee-licious! (Why didn't we know about this before?) The chicken was hot, crispy, and juicy--very flavorful. Additionally, the cleanliness of the dining area and the overall atmosphere were pretty good, which I believe reflects well on the teamwork and leadership. We stopped for gas and some beverages while on a road trip. I know they're known for their fried chicken, but we'd had lunch not long before so didn't get to try it this time. So glad a Royal Farms is in our neck of the woods. We first visited a Royal Farms in their Ashburn location. This place has a gas station and car wash. You can also get food, snacks, hot/cold drinks, Krispy Kreme doughnuts, etc. inside. We enjoy their fried chicken. You can place an order by going to the kiosk and using their touch screen. Once your order is placed, a receipt is printed out with an order number on it. If you need anything else from the store, pick it up and then head to the cashier. They will scan your receipt from the kiosk and ring up any other purchases. One of the employees at the in-store restaurant calls out your number and hands you your food. Condiments are within reach. Their chicken is fresh, crispy on the outside and juicy within. It has good flavor but a bit on the saltier side. Probably not something we will be getting often but a nice option to have near home. I work near this location and give it a chance every couple months. I've been let down every single time. I've had a chicken tender sub which was inedible because it was all tendons and gristle. Had a chicken salad sandwich that tasted like they cleaned out the fryer and mixed it with mayo. Just got a chicken sandwich with the ingredients thrown into a bag, the tenders next to it, and the cheese missing. Not sure what's up with this place but it feels like I'm being punished each time I walk in. I frequently passed Royal Farms gas stations and have stopped at one location in Clinton MD for gas that was poorly maintained so vowed never to return and definitely never to purchase food from one. However, Royal Farms fried chicken was served recently at an office function and it looked good. I had a piece which was really good; it was moist with lots of flavor. I changed my mind about Royal Farms and went to the Chantilly VA location for lunch. The ordering process was strange at first and it took a moment for me to realize that I had to input my order at a self-service terminal, pay and then wait for my number to be called. I purchased a two piece white meat chicken with a side of mash potatoes for $6.31. I've seen billboards advertising Royal Farms chicken and could have sworn it was hormone and antibiotic free but it is not. This was evident by the huge size of the breast. I cut a small piece from the breast and saw that the meat was undercooked because it gray on the inside. I returned to Royal Farms for a full refund and will not go back. There is absolutely no excuse for undercooked food, and it is dangerous to consume. read more

I work near Baltimore so I'm very familiar with how the chicken should taste. This location seems to always over-cook the chicken. I gave 3 stars just because of the western fries. I was super excited for this location to open. Love their chicken and always makes for a decent lunch break. However, the service at this location is literally the worst I've ever seen. After today's shopping experience, I really can't imagine I'll be a customer any longer. There is literally never anyone at the counter. The self checkout is fantastic, unless you purchase an item needing an ID, or furthermore if you need anything from behind the counter. The employees all have the same "can't be bothered attitude" it's tiring. I usually stop for lunch, and on my way home from work. The last thing I want to do, is wait until someone, ANYONE!! Wants to help a customer check out. Today I stared down a lady at the desk behind the counter, a young man was standing there when I walked into the store, and was still standing there by the time I was ready to check out. All in the line of sight for this lady. After leaning over and staring a bit longer, she proceeded to roll her eyes and come to help both of us. I told her the young man was there first, and once she asked what I needed, which was a carton, her attitude was so flared, she scanned the carton and hit me with the dark thing. I'm not hurt, nor am I claiming to be, but the rudeness of this lady was overwhelming. She did apologize, but ... this is your job. Pretty upset with this establishment to date.
