Walked in and perused the menus and decided upon trio choice with chicken shrimp and beef with vegetables and a side of rice along with two vegetable egg rolls. The egg rolls were very greasy and when eating them had oil leak out the bottom. The main meal was plenty of food for two but the shrimp tasted old. And the beef was salty along with the gravy/sauce. If you've just left India and are looking for Indian / Nepali food - this is a definite NOPE. The dal was extremely thick and tasteless and had very odd lentils and bits and bobs floating around. They ruined the pakodas completely and instead of being crispy they were like thick big goops of besan and a bunch of finely chopped vegetables just jammed in there. I was REALLY looking forward to some amazing Nepalese momos - it was oily and bland and tasted like nothing. The only saving grace was a too sweet paneer butter masala and garlic naans that were barely average. I wrote a review of this restaurant about a decade ago. It was a decent neighborhood, Chinese restaurant. The food was good, the consistency, reliable, priced reasonably, and they delivered. I went back recently because of the delivery service, which they still have. However, when I looked up the website, it appears that they have merged or were bought by or bought an Indian restaurant. The menu is extremely extensive and is half Indian and half Chinese. The food options are vast. The website itself works well, is easy to navigate, that is intuitive for all of the functions to explore your options, order, and check out. I ordered a drop soup, pork, fried rice, and beef lo mein. The food was delivered in a timely manner. The delivery person, was a restaurant employee and extremely courteous. The food however, was quite poor. My wife had the soup and said it was OK. I had a lo mein and pork fried rice. The pork fried rice tasted like it was reconstituted from being cooked much earlier in the day. Nothing about it was hot or fresh. The lo mein was absolutely horrendous. It tasted like it was made yesterday and I was stored in a refrigerator in a container, and put together right at the end in the walk just to heat it up. Lo mein noodles were tiny in terms of length-about1 inch. There was very little sauce and the whole dish Tasted as if it were dehydrated and reheated. Like so many of the decent restaurants of days gone by, or garden, too, deteriorated into a very mediocre-let's milk it for the money institution. Too bad. Unfortunately, cannot recommend it at this time just on the basis of food quality. If I ever get the guts to try the Indian side of this restaurant, I will post a review in the future. read more

I was traveling north on I-43 towards Mequon for a movie and needed a quick dinner beforehand. I had eaten out a few times recently, but hadn't had Chinese food specifically, so I opened my Yelp bookmarks to see what was on the way that I could pickup. Royal Garden was close to the highway and I had yet to try them, so I called in an order that I could easily eat while driving. My order consisted of pork egg rolls and crab rangoon. The thick egg rolls were clearly homemade and did not have a store bought quality to the ingredients inside, which I always appreciate. Unfortunately, I didn't think the flavor was very dynamic and, as an odd observation, I thought they were kind of dry while eating them. Not that egg roll filling needs to be sopping wet or the wrap greasy, but I wouldn't have complained about either in this instance. As of right now I don't know if I would get them again. The crab rangoon were HUGE. That is to say, the wontons were as long as an adult male's hand. The filling was maybe a tad more than a normal amount, so much of the wonton was just crispy goodness while the center area had the filling mixture. I thought the filling was more sour than sweet, which wasn't to my liking and I found hard to finish. Of the two, I'd be much more inclined to get the egg rolls again, which doesn't say much for the crab rangoon as I'm already on the fence about wanting the egg rolls again. With covid and getting more takeouts in general, we got to try more of their food. (We used to eat at their lunch buffet more, and it's just not the same) In general, I lean more towards a more authentic cuisine than the americanized Chinese. This place is definitely more on the Americanized side, more sweet than spicy, and a lot of fried. Their dishes are really a hit or miss. So far, our favorite was the moo shoo pork. Adding to that (and as an update to my previous review), we discovered their orange flavor beef. Very nice with orange peels and broccoli. (But like, just 3 pieces of broccoli, which is a great deal for the bucks, unless you really like your veggies I guess) The only problem with this dish is that the meat chunks are pretty huge, rather than bite size. Since we were home, I just got my kitchen scissors and cut it up. No problem. Popping flavors. Oh, and we got extra spicy - but didn't really feel spiciness (note above on "americanized") We also tried their new menu item: MOMO Nepali Dumplings. So, I'm not really Nepali food savvy... and didn't really know what to expect. It's a curry infused dumpling with some tomato sauce on the side. Interesting mix. Good to see good reviews on it from people who seem to know more about them. Personally, I think this was not at all "Americanized, but also not Chinese, which is more of what I was expecting (i.e. soup dumplings - oh, please add soup dumplings to your menu!!!!). So not for me. Oh, and we ordered from ubereats because we had a 75% off coupon, but they don't seem to feature their full menu there (Like the fried wings). The Chinese restaurant part of this restaurant within a restaurant is okay. They preserved the usual Americanized Chinese choices the previous owners had. The real reason to come here is to try the authentic Nepali menu, it's like they hid a unique restaurant within a more standard restaurant. We ordered DoorDash once and it was good. I wanted to try out other menu items so we ordered pickup. The place was pretty empty when I went in to place my order but quickly became a bit busier. I ordered $73 worth of food, all of which will be thrown away. I got the garlic eggplant, green beans and onion, chicken fried rice, egg fried rice, 4 egg rolls, and an order of crab Rangoon. The fried rice's were really good, which was what we initially ordered the first time through DoorDash. The eggplant and green beans, however, were one note. Very heavy on soy sauce and oyster sauce which made it very salty. The egg rolls, I wish I wouldn't have ordered bc they were very flavorless. The crab Rangoons, very skimpy. It was wrapped in large wrappers with very little filling. I am most upset about the "boba" milk tea. These are canned bubble milk tea. They advertised "boba" and I thought it was going to be actual boba tea with tapioca and a smoothie consistency. NOT CANNED stuff and for $3.95..I could have went to the local Asian store and got a 16 oz can for cheaper. Sorry but Tonight it was a huge miss and enough of a miss for me to not return. read more

I went there with my wife after hearing the owner is from Nepal. They do have a separate Nepal menu but you have to ask. The number of menu items is limited, and we were left with precisely one option for vegetarian entrees, which to me is a good sign as fewer choices usually means fresher & better. We both ordered the dish and were sadly disappointed with the quality and flavor. It was not up to the standards of other Nepali/Indian food in the United States. NEVER AGAIN! After reading that the restaurant's Everest Cafe served flavorful Nepalese cuisine we decided to give it a try. We ordered pick up and once home when we began unpacking were stunned by what we received. First indication of problem? Our anticipated order of crispy fried vegetable pakora was instead a soft & soggy due to being wrapped in plastic wrap ! Then there was the sloppy mess of dishes like Daal and Tarkari vegetarian curry packed in plastic containers whose tops were cracked, broken & leaking.... Seriously packing was so bad it was almost funny . Once we plated everythingit was time to try the food ... we found all of it whether whether a Nepalese or Chinese dish utterly FLAVORLESS . Plus if a dish contained chicken or pork it would be better described as 'mystery meat' . Food so disappointingly inferior we ended up throwing all of it out! I used to order from here a lot in the 80s and 90s. I've been so disappointed with all of the Chinese places in the area recently so I thought I'd check it out again. Just not a good experience. I arrived 5 minutes after the scheduled pickup time and was the only customer in the restaurant, yet my food was not ready. Waited another 5, not a big deal. But as I discovered when I returned home, they had committed the cardinal sin of takeout! THEY DID NOT LABEL ANY OF THE FOOD. We had 2 different kinds of fried rice and egg foo young in our order. It was such a thrill to have to pick through an egg foo young patty to see if it was pork or shrimp! And that egg foo young was packaged WITH the gravy in the container with the patties! No one serves it like that for takeout. The gravy should always be packaged separately. No wonder it was all watery and not gravy-like at all! So then, after all of that, the food was bland and we ended up throwing away most of it. Another once good place gone downhill. read more

A place to hang my coat awaited me after refreshing myself in a cool-colored clean restroom of blue tones. There were polished oriental tables and a newly-reopened buffet-style food warmer in the traditionally-adorned dining room that featured sangen tones strumming through the airwaves. My waitress politely guided me to select a seafood entree to which I added chicken. Thankfully, the shrimp was fresh, plump, and crunched properly upon my consumption. The ratio of meat, veggies, and sweet, tangy garlic sauce was effectively combined, and I could taste the difference between each type of vegetable, especially the celery and carrots. This is one of the most authentic Chinese spots in town. I'm a bit of a Chinese food critic as it is my favorite type of food, and rarely has Royal Garden disappointed. One of my all time favorite dishes is the chicken with broccoli. The broccoli is steamed and crisp, the other veggies fresh and the chicken is moist with good texture. The egg rolls also do not disappoint! I've not found another egg roll in Milwaukee with the same authentic, fresh flavor. Oftentimes egg rolls can be mushy and overly fried, but the ones here are fresh and even seem to have subtle hints of cinnamon (which works very well)! read more

Best Nepali momo's in Milwaukee area. Must have! I have been looking for Nepali momo's in the area for a really long time. Tried making my own momos from scratch, tried frozen pork dumpling and what not. I was so excited to find that this Chinese restaurant had Authentic Nepali momos on its menu. I 've had their momos 4 times and every time the flavors take me back to Nepal! It is simply delicious. The flour wraps are hand made and meat portions are generous, cooked to perfection. So bad and so disappointing! We had been coming here for over 40 years, back when it was Sun Toy. After covid, quality of food went downhill. We decided to try it out on New Year's Eve. Disappointing mistake. Egg rolls were dry and tasteless. Duck sauce could not save them. Hot and sour soup had no meat and very little else in it. And it was RED, not the normal brown color. Pork fried rice had some pork, one shriveled bean sprout, one sliver of egg, soy sauce to color it brown, and nothing else!! The Chrispy Sesame Chicken was soggy, in a thick, unidentifiable sweet sauce. The General Tso Chicken was exactly the same, with the addition of a sprig of broccoli! I really like this little lunch buffet. I started going to the lunch buffet 6 years ago when I worked in the area. I went probably once a month for a couple years, then left that job so I stopped going because it wasn't convenient. I decided to go back today, and to my surprise, literally nothing had changed in the few years time. Hooray! It's not a huge buffet, but it's only $8.45 so I wouldn't expect something huge. There's definitely enough selection for me, though. A couple soups, some sauces, white and fried rice, eggrolls, crab rangoon, fried boneless white meat chicken pieces in batter, singapore noodles, twice cooked pork, garlic chicken, a veggie stir fry, sesame chicken, egg foo young, fried chicken wings, and my favorite, beef with green beans. Plus great little almond cookies. My typical plate is loaded with crab rangoon, fried chicken, and a ton of the beef with green beans. They deep fry the green beans as most Chinese restaurants do, so they get the lovely wrinkly skin. Then stir fry them with beef in a dark brown sauce (likely oyster and soy based). The dish is so good I ended up making a similar dish at home when I needed my fix. The fried things are always still crunchy and not soggy, including the chicken breast pieces fried in a sweetish batter. That's not an easy feat on a buffet. Everything is always being refilled or refreshed by the staff. They take dirty plates away from your table quickly and refill your water fast as well. No, it's not amazing authentic Chinese cuisine, but it's a great little Chinese-American buffet that's thankfully nothing like those "Chinese buffet" mega restaurants that are also mega nasty. Plus the woman who you pay at the counter (I assume owner, she's older and English is not her first language) is adorable and knows everyone that comes in. Just left Royal Garden and must say this was absolutely THE WORST Chinese food I've ever had! Ordered Sweet and Sour Shrimp. Absolutely gross. Nothing but breading and it wasn't even done. The TINY shrimp inside of the breading (if you can call them that) were hard and rubbery. HORRIBLE! NEVER AGAIN! If I could give 0 stars--I would. Or negative 0. Royal Garden's food has the taste and freshness from ingredients that I have not experienced in a long time. Once upon a time you used to go to a restaurant and get fresh and satisfying food. Royal Garden/ Cafe Everest offers superb dishes, fresh food, that are reminiscent of the good old days when food in restaurants were seductive with flavor and ingredients. Their Nepali dishes are how I remember them. Their limited menu guarantees, fresh ingredients and quality with spices. I will take that any day over a menu with many choices where the vegetables are over cooked and lifeless in flavor. This restaurant is the return of the quality restrurants giving excellent foods while eating out for a reasonable price. This is a go to place for sure! read more

The restaurant recently added Himalayan dumplings, traditionally referred to as Momo, on their menu and the dish is pure ecstasy. From the foothills of Nepal to the plauteus of Tibet, momo is the equivalent of Hamburger and this place delivers it in it's most authentic form. The dumplings are amazingly succulent. The dumpling wraps are individually made from scratch. The mix of cabbage and cilantro in the minced meat gives each bite the perfect crunch. And the sauce.. The sauce is something else. It has the perfect hint of peppers and turmeric and ginger in creamy tomato base. You would have to be lucky to get sauce this good outside of Kathmandu, and yet this humble hole in the wall delivers it all. Please go to royal garden and against all intuition, order the Nepali Momo special, ask them for two different sauce. One with spices and one without, and it will be the best decision you've ever made :) read more

I had a craving for some Chinese food and wanted to try a new place. Decent Chinese food in the Glendale area is slim-picking at best, so my bar has already been set pretty low. After reading that they had a Nepalese menu, I was a bit hopeful for some flavorful food. Sad to say that I was wrong. Ordered the chicken momos and they had no flavor and were very heavy, the sauce, however, was actually kind of flavorful (that was actually the best part of the meal). Also had the hot and sour soup (no flavor at all, not even sour), kung pao twosome, and sesame chicken. The kung pao had probably 2 cups of chopped celery, barley any shrimp, and no flavor at all. Sesame chicken, on the other hand had a bunch of chicken, but was SWIMMING in some sort of ultra sweet sauce that made the chicken very soggy and the sauce was totally overwhelming. So sweet. When I picked up the food, the dining room was very empty and there was no music playing. The staff, when they actually came out of the kitchen, seemed nice, but I felt bad because of the depressing ambiance in the dining room. I will probably throw most of the leftovers away. Really sad that there are no decent options for Chinese food in this area. read more

Great restaurant with lots of choices in buffet with a variety of options. I go about 2-4 times a month and know the staff for a long time. Thing to note: if you want the bigger portion of take out food, choose dinner portion. 2x as big and definitely leftovers for another time to enjoy. The egg drop soup is just that, but it is very flavorless. Definitely not the best I ever had, but if you're looking for some comfort food, it'll do. Today I ordered beef and broccoli and it was, frankly, inedible. The meat was tough and flavorless and the vegetables were burnt. The only things I ended up eating from my order were the white rice and crab rangoons. Decided to order out with my co-workers tonight. I initially asked for the Dragon & Phoenix but was told they where out of the lobster. I settled on half of the item by ordering the General Tsos Chicken. Our order was for delivery and when I pulled my chicken out of the paper bag it was a mess. They put the chicken loaded with sauce just in a paper carton and threw it in an untied plastic bag. While they gave a generous portion of tasty meat their packaging was sloppy. I first tried the beef and found it tough, grizzly and flavorless. The veggies were perfectly cooked and were great. the pan fried noodles were stuck together in a clump and overcooked, like they were reheated with steam. Then I tried the chicken and immediately tasted fish, which I was not expecting! To make matters worse, I also pulled a long thin black hair out of my mouth from that first bite. It was so gross! My family has been going here since I was a kid and it was SunToy. The owner, Jan, is the sweetest woman ever. Even as my siblings and I have moved out of state, if we come back for a meal she greets us by name...even if we get delivery or take out...over the phone she remembers!!! The food is authentic Chinese and the best in Milwaukee. Singapore Noodles, Sesame Chicken, Egg Fu Yung, and MooShoo Pork are our favorites. Lunch buffet is an AMAZING deal with top notch choices! Royal Garden is our go to for Chinese takeout during the pandemic. Food is consistently tasty and helpings are generous.

I've been ordering from Royal Garden for years, and it is one of the only places I've known that does cold sesame noodles right. Located off of Silver Spring, and right to the Bayshore Town Center, it's conveniently right in delivery range of most of the north Milwaukee area. The service is fast, and while the atmosphere tends to lean towards cookie cutter chinese, the friendly staff and quality of food more than makes up for this. What really shines through though, is anything with their beef. It's always perfectly cooked, and never overly oily/greasy, and their portion is always appropriate to whatever sides/ingredients are made with it. If you're looking for a nearby place that will deliver to you fast and accurate, give this a shot, it goes great with a side of Netflix. read more
