This might be long winded.... My mothers band used to play at royal garden a few weekends a month. Since my husband and I live around the corner, we would frequent the lounge/bar area while she was performing. From what I understand the original owners have given the business to their grandchildren and they have taken over. My mothers band was promptly fired, and the food is terrible. About 6-9 months ago we gave take out a try. We ordered a small chicken wing and 3 wings were in the box. 3. Two for my husband and one for myself. It was about $6 for a small. $2 a wing?!? We also ordered low mein which was greasy and room temperate. And my husband loves the bread. We got home and there was none in the bag. He called and they told him it costs extra and has to be ordered with your meal!!! Never ever going here again. Driving to Duxbury and getting good food at Tsangs. read more

I'd say we get take out from the Royal Garden every 2-3 months. It's typical American-Chinese fare, greasy apps, lo mien and fried rice with every protein you'd expect and common specialized dishes like Kung Pao, General Gau's, Orange Beef and a good variety of seafood dishes. The food is pretty good, they're not doing anything out of the ordinary, but they are doing it right and the quantity, oh my the quantity. You can enjoy it for dinner on a Friday night, midnight snack that night, sneak a few boneless ribs for a Saturday morning breakfast and then scrape a dinner together out of again Saturday night. Sure you might pay 70 bucks for a PuPu Platter for two, two apps, a fried rice, a lo mien and one specialty dish, but you can invite the neighbors and all feast until you're ready to burst. I wish they would save the bread though. I don't have a need for a dozen semi-stale rolls although I can say that the birds in my backyard are also well fed when we bring home Royal Garden take-out. The only time I have ever eaten in house (other than a few apps in the bar over a fog-cutter or three) is one Christmas when family plans imploded. And no I didn't get a Red Ryder BB Gun that year. I do remember the service as being good and the decor is nice and cheesy with wood paneling and gaudy Asian decor. They do have an older male/female combo group that plays often on weekends and they're a lot of fun. They play everything from Aerosmith to the Beatles to Judas Priest (!!!) and are really entertaining to watch while having a few drinks. Play Keno, grab a few high octane Asian cocktails, throw back some Chicken Fingers and enjoy it! It's actually a pretty good time (if you're over the age of 30). read more

I'm puzzled as to how this gets so many "best Chinese on the South Shore reviews." Is the competition that lame? To me, a foodie from Boston, this was minimally acceptable American-style Chinese food which will do in a pinch if you're on the road and your only other option is McDonald's. Location is convenient for Bostonians going to the Cape and back. Ambiance is a throwback to the 70s--maroon-colored booths, wood veneer on the walls and lots of drinks with umbrellas in them. Despite my love of authentic Asian food, I appreciate a good greasy American-style Chinese place. Sometimes I'm just in the mood. Today in particular I had a craving for that very non-Asian confection: General Tsau's chicken. The best General's is addictively crispy on the outside, and slathered with a sweet-and-spicy orangish sauce. The dish I got was not even close. On the positive side, it had big chunks of white meat chicken--a higher quality than is often found in this dish. But the rest was wrong, so wrong! Instead of the crispy covering, there was a thin, bland bread coating. And the sauce was brown and goopy, with a strong Hoisin flavor. Overall impression: Overpriced McNugget. The Vegetable Delight was better. The veggies were fresh and perfectly cooked. The broccoli was just crispy enough. The clearish white sauce was inoffensive but added no flavor. The dish contained red and green bell peppers, which were not listed on the menu and which I do not like. I received a large metal plate with metal cover (I love those) of white rice. A small dish of canned pineapple chunks came with the check. If I'm hungry in this neighborhood again, and desperate, I would give this another try. But I would *simplest * things--like chicken with broccoli, wonton soup and dumpling--the kind of stuff you can't mess up no matter what you do. read more

I am not a huge fan of Americanized Chinese food. As I have said in other reviews...don't say you love Mexican food if you have only been to Taco Bell. Really the food is not very good here but probably some of the better stuff considering the limited options. The one thing they do get thumbs up on are the portions in relation to the price. I am not sure that is something to be proud of since we are a nation of people who need large portions. Regardless, you will get full. The staff is efficient (but aren't most Chinese restaurants?) and friendly. The dining room is of decent size and they do a tremendous take-out business. It can get very busy during the weeknights and weekend nights. Lots of locals in this place and certainly some long-time customers. I generally stick with the Beef Chow Foon or House Special Fried Rice. Not authentic but when you live so far from Chinatown, you take what you can get. read more

I have to agree with Allison C-- this is by far the best Chinese on the South Shore. I don't think it's authentic by any means, but I have always (seriously, since i was like 10) enjoyed the food here-- the veggie lo mein, crab rangoon, and scallion pancakes being among my favorites. Eat-in or take-out, the service is lightning speed, and really friendly. I think it's family owned. And as any Chinese restaurant in the suburbs worth it's weight in Fog Cutters and Mai-Tais should, it has a super seedy bar. read more

The driver literally freaked us out. We ordered for a delivery from the hotel we are staying. For the delivery instructions we asked to leave the food by the elevator of the floor our room was located at. Soon after we ordered, we received a call from the restaurant asking how we are going to tip the driver and to leave a cash by the elevator or something (like duh). We asked him back whether it is required to tip the driver. He was like I'll call you back when I arrive then hung up. (Honestly it was hard for me to interpret what he was saying) When he arrived, he called us and spoke loud in the hallway for us to hear him. There was no reason for him to call us but the tips, tips, tips... we asked him to put the food down by the elevator and leave, but he called us like 10 times thereafter, repeatedly saying that he had arrived (not even explicitly asking for the tips tho). He eventually asked for the room number, which there was no reason for us to tell him (who knows if he's going to stay in front of our room all day lol), so when we refused, he got the house keeping lady passing by to ask us the room number. When we refused again, he went to the lobby then asked the assistant at the front desk to call us and ask for the room number. At first the assistant thought that we didn't pay for the food, so he even called on the number on the receipt to double-check that we were the ones who paid for the food. At last the assistant called us about 5 mins after to tell us that the guy finally left. We waited for about 5-10 more mins before picking up the food just to make sure that he left for real. When we got to the lobby, the assistant told us that he stayed in the lobby for about 10 mins, yelling "f**king idiot!". Never going to order from this place ever again. The quality of the food is less than mediocre, the delivery service is literally hell. Who would threaten a customer just for tips? Think big, man. You are losing your future customers for a tip. Such a creepy, horrifying experience!! read more

I went with my father and several friends to the Royal Garden tonight, New Year's Eve, for an eat in dinner. Being NYE, I knew it would be crowded, and indeed it was. The wait was about 45 minutes, but then we had 6 people in our party. I have always liked their food here, and tonight was no exception. Our waiter, on the other hand, was not good. He was not pleasant at all, and didn't bother to explain things to us. When he brought us our water, he was short one, so I didn't have water for awhile. It was some time before he finally took our order. Our food didn't take too long, but when it did arrive, two people in our group, who ordered a meal for 2, got only one item from their meal and had to wait an additional 10 or 15 minutes for the rest of it, with no explanation from our waiter. Not only that, but he never asked if any of us wanted beverages (sodas and such). I guess he assumed that tea and water would be enough. The host ended up getting our order for beverages and bringing me my water. At the end our waiter did do a good job putting all the leftovers in take home containers for us, though he was not pleasant about it. Loud drunk patrons talking like they are 20ft apart but they were actually at the same table. Dirty near the hostess desk. Dust on desk, lamp and AC vents. Poor waiter had to run while hostess had nothing to do. Not even answer phone. Took 10min to get check and we had to ask for the check at the front desk. Dining experience was painful!!! Not to mention how stomach felt an hour later. Leftovers ended up getting thrown out because the food was not right !!! Next time we will drive to a better place. read more

I just moved to the area recently, so was trying this place out. Went to play Keno and have drinks and see what the menu was like. The restaurant itself is extremely outdated. They are very slow to take the Keno tickets, as you have to wait in an entirely separate room. It's pretty annoying to have to leave the bar at all, but then to stand there for 5-10 minutes and wait for somebody to come help you is even more annoying. I found the bartenders to be extremely rude. After two beers I was told "this is your last one." One of the hostesses actually came up to me and yelled "YOU LEAVE YOUR DOG IN CAR?????" (I don't have a dog) It was a weird place, rude employees. Will never, ever go back. read more

Me and 3 friends went out for Chinese food at royal garden. The service was ok for small place the food was good we ordered small free water and tea was great. We had enough to pay the bill and only a small tip But we finished paid the bill so we got up walking to the door half way out the door our waitress stoped and singled out our female friend demanding more of a tip rudely demanding 20% which is outrageous and wouldn't let us leave until she got more and basically ripped us off of all our money and embarrassed my friend in the restaurant we won't be going back read more

Used to be 5 star (I've been coming here 30 years)..... Not anymore. Last time I ate here was a year ago. I used to live in Manomet ( now live in Natick ), and my tax guy is still in Plymouth, so I only get this far south once a year. Anyway last year the food was mediocre, at best, but because I had so many fond memories there, I thought I should stick with it. After I was seated, in an empty dining room (pre-dinner rush) I waited 5 minutes for someone to acknowledge us, apparently the host didn't tell the wait staff, someone had been seated, so I got up and left. I'll never go back. Good luck with mediocre food and terrible service, and the willingness to let, long time customers leave unsatisfied, they'll be gone soon enough. read more

We ordered 4 entrees for delivery and they came earlier than expected. We ordered the lunch specials, sweet and sour shrimp, chicken fried rice, boneless spare ribs, and veggie friend rice. However they gave us sweet and sour chicken instead of shrimp. The food was delicious, even though we didn't get what we ordered...I wouldn't recommend the veggie fried rice because it was 75% rice and 25 % veggie. If we would have gotten the right order (which we have the other couple times) it would have been 5 star. read more

So my review will start like this......... I am giving zero stars for the fact that I ordered food and was up charged for a menu that has been updated and will be available next week but it's on line supposedly according to the woman I spoke to at this location. Then I asked for extra duck sauce and was told it was $4.00 for the pint and I got charged $12.00. The boneless spareribs were like beef jerky and the rest of our food was cold. When I asked for a refund for the up charge I was told nope I asked why and got no answer. I will never visit this place again. They charge you for prices that are not even on the menus that we have also asked the driver for a new menu and got one when I mentioned it them when I called I was told they were old and "no good" the new ones come out next week. Any one got an explanation on this? I have never heard of a company charging prices that are not out yet then don't give a refund when asked due to an up charge. Thieves. read more

We've been long-time customers of Royal Garden (since 1990) which was shortly after they first opened. Food has always been great before and after the change in owners. Maybe we're spoiled as "regulars", but we've never had a bad anything. We know management and servers on a first name basis and have always been treated wonderfully. They respect our feedback and go above and beyond to serve our needs. Our kids have always gone with us and they too now have a rapport with employees. Royal Garden is godawful and no Chinese restaurant has any business serving food that bad in this day and age. Everything is SUPER greasy and sweet; their menu has lousy vegetarian options. Every dish is bland and salty, nothing fresh or creative. The decor is dated, service is mediocre. The only positive is that you can order online and they deliver fast. I have been going here for many years and has always been a favorite. The food a good. Just recently they put in a new bar tender that has a big attitude problem. He kept telling us to wait while he took care of the "regulars". Then he thought it OK to yell at the bar maid until she started to cry and she had to leave the room. Ooh, Royal Garden changed hands recently. We had a Pupu platter a month or so ago. It wasn't very good. The food was cold and they didn't provide much sterno on the platter to heat it up. Such a shame- the place used to be good. I may give it one more try but they will need to improve. read more

Hands down best chinese food on the south shore. whenever i am down there a trip to the Royal is a must. Scorpion bowls, mai tais and semi pro kareoke on saturday nights is a fantastic way to spend an evening out of the city. The Royal Garden is a quintessential South Shore Chinese Lounge! They do not have many of these classic establishments any where else in America. A lively lounge with fun and fruity cocktails in neat glassware, and an easy cocktail menu to look through. They show great live music and people still dance here! The food is just fine! Nothing extraordinarily creative or different, but it's tasty and perfect to keep you fed for a fun night out with music, dancing, cocktails and keno! read more

Very disappointed! We hadn't been there in a long time because we heard the original owners had sold and moved away. We had heard mixed reviews so we decided to give it a try. Well we wished we had gone elsewhere. We went for an early dinner on a Friday and we both ordered dinner combo plates. The fried rice was mushy and tasted like it had been left over from the day before and the chicken chow mein was made with all dark meat! Yuck! Do your selves a favor and stay faraway from this place! We had thought twice before going in because we saw the broken Planter box full of cigarette butts hanging from the deck. Update to my review: Received email from the New Manager asking me to try them again. She said she was sorry for my experience and offered me compensation. I really appreciated her reaching out to me, so I place an order. The food was great, and came just as ordered. They have redeemed themselves with me. Ordered delivery for New Years eve. Was charged extra to swap items on the pu pu platter and they didn't send the right order. When I called to say they made a mistake, I was told they were busy, call back tomorrow. I told her I didn't want to call back tomorrow, I wanted them to deliver the items I paid for. She said they would deliver it, but they never did. She lied to me to get me off the phone. We have been going to this place since the day it opened. After trying every Chinese place between Boston and the Cape, we keep going back to the Royal Garden. Usually, when you arrive, you are greeted by a very pleaseant hard working lady who is actually the owner. She keeps everything humming and ensures nothing but the best in service and good food. The PuPu platters are gigantic and every dish served is fresh, plentiful and delicious! The prices are average for Chinese but the quality of the food is awesome. Decor is aging and could use a facelift soon. What a great local find and others can't compare. read more

Called at 8pm and they said they missed the order and they would sent it right out. 9pm..we called and said forget the order, we still haven't received it, it's to late to eat we don't want it. Something's changed. RG has gone downhill. We went a week ago for a Sat. lunch and were disappointed. The appetizers seemed to be very greasy and mostly batter, the boneless spareribs were just pieces of dry, chewy pork, and the egg rolls tasted like they had been in the supermarket freezer a little too long! Over the years I'd occasionally take out or dine in here and was never overly impressed.Last week I decided to give it another try since it's been a year or so.I ordered take out from the dinner menu and must say it was absolutely horrible! Chicken Lo mien with boneless ribs was my choice.When I got home and opened it the first thing I noticed was the huge volume of grease it was swimming in.I actually pored it through a colander first to try to decrease the amount.I think I counted 4 small pieces of chicken that I had to hunt for and the ribs were not fit for human consumption,all chewy fat and gristle,actually my cat even turned away from it before I decided to throw it away! I really have no problem paying 9 or 10 bucks for a take out meal if it's prepared right and palatable and at least semi nutritional but for me this was just the opposite. read more

After all the good reviews, I was excited to try this "retro" spot in Kingston. I wasn't expecting gourmet, but was severely disappointed on a basic level. I got the General Gau's chicken. The chicken portion of the dish was the same poor quality you find at the cheap hole-in-the wall places found in Downtown Crossing (more soft soggy batter than chicken). I made a very poor choice by upgrading from rice to noodles, as the noodles were absolutely drenched in soy sauce to the point where the noodles were darkened by the absorption. They were also slightly burnt. Willing to give this place one more try, becauyse every chef can have an off day, but first experience was pretty awful. read more
