Tried Royal India in San Diego and left with mixed feelings. The food was overall average -- the pakoda was the highlight, crispy and flavorful. Unfortunately, the rest of the dishes, especially the chicken items, were quite bland and lacked the expected spice and depth. Biryani was good . Naan and veggie curries were average . Chicken tikka was bland. . Achari chicken was good. Service was very slow -- it took about 45 minutes for our food to arrive, which was frustrating. The atmosphere wasn't great either; the tables were cramped and it felt a bit overcrowded. They do have some beer options, which was a plus. Not a terrible experience, but definitely room for improvement in both flavor and service. Average experience . 3 stars

I travel for work and am always looking for great Indian restaurants. Royal India has been consistently excellent during my month here in San Diego. My go-to dish at any Indian restaurant is chicken korma, and theirs is terrific. The naan is also fantastic-- nice and light with an almost flaky consistency. Really some of the best naan I've ever had. And the basmati rice is perfectly prepared in the traditional Indian style. Don't skip on the vegetable samosas to start! I brought a couple of work friends here, and they were also impressed by the restaurant. If you're in the area and looking for great Indian food, look no further!

Royal India in San Diego touts itself as #1 in San Diego at the front door but my experience fell a bit short of expectations. They have a nice ambiance and a central location in the Gaslamp Quarter near the convention center. Parking: As expected for downtown, parking can be challenging. Street parking is limited, and nearby garages can be pricey, so plan accordingly. I got the butter chicken with naan. The flavors were decent but nothing really stood out. I felt like I've had better flavors from take-out Indian food locations in SoCal. I also felt that the portions were small for the price. It was one piece of drumstick and one thigh for the portion with a bit of rice. The naan was crispy instead of chewy but still tasted good. Overall, the food felt average--nothing bad, but nothing memorable either. Service: Service was okay. There were not a lot of people in the restaurant and it was slow. It wasn't bad, but again, average. Overall, if you're desperate for Indian food in this area, this place has decent food. But the portions and service make it feel overpriced for what you get. I wouldn't go out of my way for this place.

I came in for quick take out order. They don't particularly have the restaurant set up for take out, but we were able to place our order at the front and wait at one of the tables for our food to be ready. I got chicken tikka, samosas, and garlic naan, which was all pretty tasty. The dining area was pretty nice, so next time I would prefer to dine in to experience the food fresh from the kitchen

I wasn't insanely impressed by the food or service here, but we were in the area and were hungry for dinner. The dishes were pretty good tasting and portions were good since we had leftovers for the next day. We got naan, paratha, biryani, daal, and butter tarka. Each was pretty good and quite filling, but a little pricey. I also can't blame the restaurant for this, but there was one very loud table next to us and I also didn't like our server as she did some impolite things and I didn't like her attitude. The other staff were very friendly though and since the food was good I'd give 4 solid stars.

I took my son here to celebrate his 21st birthday, and we couldn't have asked for a better experience! From the moment we walked in, the service was warm, welcoming, and attentive. The staff made us feel special and made sure every detail of our visit was perfect. Every dish was bursting with flavor, cooked to perfection, and beautifully presented. It was hands down some of the best Indian food I've ever had. Can't wait to come back!

After the first visit - I declare Royal India my favorite Indian restaurant in San Diego!!! Located in the Gaslamp district interior is organized to look old fashioned and "Royal". Bright lights, chandeliers and Royal-style chairs! Food was to die for. I did indulge in vegan dishes starting with Samosa and followed by Aloo Tikki which I had for the first time! Main dish was Channa Masala with extra hotness to it. She had Aloo Gobi which was to die for. Service was good. However - there is a correct stereotype about Indian waiters regardless of the country in which the restaurant is. Good service with fiat personalities. Still always nice!

The service was amazing with the staff being so attentive. They gave us a complimentary desert which was amazing and so was the ambience. The food was sooooo good. Definitely recommend the Lamb Biryani, Butter Chicken and Garlic Naan!

After we paid, we thought the place was closed...but then realized it wasn't. We tried to go in a different door that was locked. The entrance is so confusing because it's literally on the inner side that you can't see! Can easily be missed! Good thing we found it before leaving. When else entered, it was empty! On a Friday night. It felt like VIP and private we had the restaurant to ourselves but it was so sad at the same time. They were more strong on to-go orders as customers came and went. We ordered their vegetable tempura, pineapple fried rice, and panang curry. Everything came out hot. All was good except the pineapple in their fried rice was spoiled. We brought it to their attention, and they corrected it right away. They explained it was canned so they're not sure how it could've been spoiled. We were unable to eat it. They made us a fresh new hot plate. They also brought us everything we requested like condiments and boxes. The lady was very nice about it. I couldn't hate on the place. It's just sad to see it dead compared to how it was before. The economy is really tough, and too expensive to dine out. The only one-off would be the spoiled food many because the food isn't circulating due to low demand. Anyway, the staff were very nice and polite though. Was not at all mad or rude when we mentioned it.

As first-timers, we weren't sure what to order, but the young woman at the front (sorry we didn't catch your name!) was incredibly welcoming. The presentation was on point, and thankfully, the flavors lived up to the hype. Let's just say the fries didn't stand a chance. As a business owner myself, I know that great customer service is what keeps people coming back. Pair that with delicious food, and you've got a winning combination. The food is a great intro to the cuisine, but the flavors are a bit lighter than I expected. Service and friendliness are peak, and the ambiance is suitable for a chill lunch with friends, or a culinary excursion! Food: a friend and I picked Awash to try Ethiopian for the first time. If that's what you're looking for, Awash has you covered! We ordered the veggie and meat combos which allow you to sample an array of meat and veg curries (unsure of the proper term) along with the signature Injera, classic Ethiopian flatbread with a light spongy texture and sourdough-like tang. This is perfect for the culinary adventurer like ourselves, but their menu hosts a wide array of Ethiopian dishes we'd be excited to try in the future. I found the Injera to be delightfully unique in texture and flavor with their surprisingly light and delicate body. And eating with hands, as is traditional, is a fun experience. The curries were wide in variety and flavor, but I felt each one lacked a real depth and umami punch that you may find in other cuisines. Since I've now only had Ethiopian food once I don't have a frame of reference to compare, but I prefer to err on the side that this simple taste is a quality of being home cooked food, clearly prepared by the wife of the owner, and not of the cuisine as a whole. I would love to try other dishes to see if I can get that complexity, but if you come expecting the "wow" punch of comparable dishes from say Indian cuisine, don't. This is home cooked food by a family that has been running this shop for many years. Not a chef, not a kitchen, just a pair that is making their way and sharing with the world their culture and cuisine. Service: Being a family restaurant, the husband and wife pair were the ones to serve us on the quiet Saturday afternoon we stepped in. The husband has better English, and was happy to recommend dishes, teach me how to eat with my hands, and check on our experience throughout our meal! Extremely welcoming, and I could feel his joy at being able to share his culture with me. That in and of itself makes this a 5 star meal. The restaurant is also patronized by members of the local community, lending to a casual and friendly atmosphere where the husband will sit in the dining area with his friends when it's quiet, where they will chat, and he will occasionally call out to me casually to see how I liked the food. Very sweet! Again, this is a family and community institution. Do not expect on hand waiter service, DO expect owners that will come and happily help if you call, and do expect authentic smiles and excitement if you're a first timer. Ambiance: Awash has a lovely and welcoming exterior ripe with culturally inspired colors. The open layout interior from the dining area to the grocery store is clean and orderly. The decor itself is sparse, but you can really get the vibe that the husband and wife who own Awash have started, sustained, and built a life out of this quaint shop. It's great for dining with friends, family, or dates if you're coming specifically for the food. If you're trying to get to know someone, though, save Awash for when you're already together lol. Overall, I can't give awash less than a 5/5 for the excellent introduction to Ethiopian cuisine, the homey and sweet owners, and the casual friendly vibes. Will definitely be back to try more!
