I cannot believe there are bad reviews for this restaurant! People are nuts. Although it is not fancy, bare bones plain tables no decor, the food makes up Big Time. Having lived in NY and London and eaten Indian food since the 70s.... my husband and I know special Indian food the second it hits our tongue. This is special Indian food. We travel to Brunswick, Hallowell and Portland to get good Indian food and these tastes here transcended all of them. Yeah, you don't get TONS of food, find a Golden Corrall if that's what you need. What you get is so fresh and different from the other places. The chicken tikka masala WAS different and it was absolutely delicious. For once the chicken actually tasted tender, smokey, quality chicken. And the fresh vegetable korma, fantastic. We enjoyed it there and and the next day at home. Horrible place, we visited from VA and ordered some food, they charged us $7 per naan and all naans are burned, all the food was horrible taste and quantity was little, on the top of it, they did not cared for our concerns. Please don't waste your money. Update: The owner called me over the phone after seeing my reviews on yelp. Unfortunately this level of defensiveness is just a reflection of their mistake. To give burnt naan, micro pakoras & arguing with a customer over requesting chutney instead of ketchup is not a problem I chose to have. This is just a heads up to anyone expecting more. The chicken tikka masala was outstanding. Just the right amount of spice and so flavorful.

Cute spot but the patio fills up quickly, so get here early if you want to sit outside (we arrived around 6:10 and had to sit inside to avoid a wait). We got three dishes to share and two naans (one garlic and one butter) which were all good! The naan was large but the garlic naan didn't taste of garlic. Overall the food was good and a much needed break from seafood. Like everyone in Bar Harbor, there is no attached parking but there's a pay lot across the street ($4/hour). read more

The menu in person was a bit more limited that what I found online; notably I had hoped for veggie momos given the place had a bit of a Nepali flair, but they didn't have them. The options they did have were fairly basic. The dal that I ordered was fresh and had a complex spice mix, and the naan was fresh and crispy. We visited this restaurant on 10/12/25. We ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala, along with other dishes. However, when we received the food, we found the Chicken Tikka Masala to not be made in the traditional manner. We returned to the restaurant to ask for a refund or to switch this entree, to which the restaurant staff rudely declined. I would NOT come back here to order food again and would also WARN others to NOT come here if they are looking for top notch service. This might be the only the Indian restaurant at Bar Harbor near Acadia national park in Maine. We enjoyed finding this place on the day we arrived. It is common to find Indian restaurants reliably open 9pm-ish. The food was great. The service was quick and some minor modifications we requested were accommodated. So we enjoyed this place. My husband LOVES Indian food. The spices are too much for me. At other restaurants I say 'no spice' and they put spices on anyway. This place listened to me. I ordered butter chicken, no spices. It was delicious. I was very happy and so was my husband. The little bowls didn't look like a lot of food but it was plenty. Very tasty. Service was very good. Only one minor glitch. I asked how big the naan was and she held up her hands to show a size. It looked small, so we ordered 2. Oooops. It was twice the size she showed. One was big enough for 2 people. Really solid and affordable Indian food with friendly service. They have the classics and, this being Maine, they also have things like butter lobster and lobster korma. The butter lobster was my favorite - I actually liked it more than Havana's lobster moquequa - but not really because of the lobster (which was pretty skimpy). The butter sauce was just very good. We came in hungry and I love I Indian food. This is one of the best ever!! Because we're in Maine I got a lobster tandoori. The size was great!!! Perfect flavors. The sauce with it was super yummy and so was the rice. My husband had sahi paneer with no spice. It was really good and lots of cheese. Good naan too. We will come back! read more

Had dinner here tonight with my family. Service was excellent. Food was pretty good. We liked the Butter Naan better than the Naan we get from our favorite Indian restaurant back home. We had four entrees, the Chicken Tikka Masala, the lamb Saag, butter chicken, and chicken saag. We had little heat on two of the dishes and medium heat on two of the dishes. If I was choosing I would select medium or even give hot a try. If you want something different in Bar Harbor give this place a try. read more

Royal Indian is an excellent restaurant staffed by the most welcoming family and most creative kitchen team! Our food was delish! An earlier reviewer wrote, "I love when a place takes a local ingredient and does some fusion with another cuisine. Of course I'm talking about lobster in this case." This is a perfect reflection of Royal Indian. My wife did just this and it was the best choice. The presentation was lovely and it was so tasty! I chose a chicken dish given its 5-star recommendation on the menu, so tasty! We started with Samosas and pickled chutney. The garlic naan was a generous portion and served hot. It was a wonderful addition. The local brewer, Atlantic, supplies a "Bar Harbor Real Ale" and it too was the perfect accompaniment! Flawless, I had the Jackfruit curry medium heat and it was spicier than expected but it was lovely and so was the staff

The staff was really kind and attentive. The food was SO GOOD and easily the best thing we ate in Bar Harbor. dinking around in the atlantic northeast for a couple days and nothing says Maine like curry! it's so good..! okay, maybe everything says Maine better but the aromas wafting in the night air told them all to pound sand... made our way over from the druggist and got a table on the patio until a breeze picked up and we went inside like normal people; overhead was calm and low enough to just cover the sounds of business and mute the other tables, spare furnishings but not uncomfortable and the food were absolutely... started with samosa unlike any my lovely bride has encountered; larger and crustier and looks like a hostess snack pie but filled with potatoes and peas and stuff not bad lemon pudding. butter chicken for MLB to avoid the heat common to indian cuisine. she enjoys the bold flavours but is delicate and frequently overcome by anything spicier than fancy ketchup. my Chicken Vindaloo was hot and spicy - too spicy for MLB to have more than the smallest taste without overwhelming her delicate palate. I could have stood a little more heat but will trade for depth and character any day - bland heat I can get from ghost peppers but to what end? I don't know enough about india to guess about the authenticity but I know good eats when I have them and these are they. would totally eat here again. read more

After an awful experience at one of Bar Harbor's coveted restaurants, we came up one this place and knew that it would be packed with flavor! So, we walked into make a reservation for the next evening. Stealing the catchphrase from Guy Fieri " it was Flavortown" !!! The samosas were huge and packed with spice and deliciousness, the chicken tikka masala was ordered "medium" and hit the spice mark perfectly and the garlic naan; well it was made fresh to order and was perfection and also huge! The service was friendly and kind and showed pride and hospitality. The decor is lackluster but the food makes up for it. This was such a good experience. The food was good and we're picky. The daal and saag were homemade tasting. The kids enjoyed the butter chicken(more like the chicken tikka masala we're used to). Overall, the food was delicious except on big issue...the tandoori chicken was straight up raw! :( Visited Bar Harbor with my sister, who is pregnant, and decided to have another cuisine for dinner aside from seafood, since my sister was avoiding too much seafood anyway due to her pregnancy. We ordered samosas for apps, which came as 2 pieces that were huge! Yum, delicious. For entrees, we got the chicken vindaloo and tandoori chicken (whole chicken -- you have a choice of half or whole sizes). Plus, a side of cheese and garlic naan. I don't eat Indian food often to confidently judge what's better than another, but for what it was, the chicken vindaloo was good, it came with basmati rice and a small side salad. Not sure if this is just how basmati rice is (and I'm more used to eating rice in East Asian cooking like Chinese, Korean, Japanese) but the rice was dry. Even with the curry sauce, it didn't have a good chew for me. Now, the culprit -- tandoori chicken. The whole size came with two large leg quarters and extra large meatball sizes of white meat. Unfortunately one of the leg quarters was completely raw, not even close to being cooked. This is not good in general, and especially being cautious with a pregnant lady! Lucky for us, we were staying at an accommodation with an oven so I popped it in there at 400 degrees for 30 minutes. Solved the issue on our own. Still, it's not what I'd expect to get for a take out order that's meant to be ready to eat. Would've rated 4 stars otherwise. read more

I tried this place several times prior and liked it, so we decided to invite our friends to dinner here. We ordered tendori lobster before and thought it was well seasoned, and tasty. We enjoyed it. We recommended that to our friends and we ordered the lobster again, it was disappointing. A serious lack of taste. We also ordered the lamb tendori and the meat again is under seasoned and so tough we had a hard time chewing the meat. There are so many good restaurants in town, I would rather spend my money elsewhere though. read more

This wasn't our first choice but we're certainly glad we stopped by. We were walking through downtown Bar Habor looking for lunch. The first place, a pub, had outside seating which was a couple of plastic chairs and small bistro table (only two tables with two chairs per table) on the sidewalk. We needed to eat outside because of our dog. A woman inside the pub said they would not serve us because of the dog even if it was outside. So we moved along and found Royal Indian on a side street. They had outside seating but no one was on the patio. I walked in and asked if we could eat outside with our dog. They had no problem with that. It had rained that morning so a gentleman came and tipped off all the water from the table and wiped down the chairs with a towel for us. Once other customers after us saw that we were sitting outside, they also wanted to eat on the patio. We're such creatures of habit. I ordered my usual lamb saag and the husband got butter chicken. We added garlic naan as well. I really liked the saag. It was slightly different than what I've had at other places. Much more onions in my dish and we both were able to get our dishes mild. Husband also enjoyed his butter chicken. We were both very impressed with the naan. It was the entire size of the dinner plate. It was hot with butter and garlic. It was fantastic! read more

Taking breakfast and dessert out of the equation, Indian is one of the few cuisines that pleases everybody in our house. On the only rainy day of our week long Mount Dessert Island ("MDI") vacation, we decided to order takeout from Bar Harbor's Royal Indian. It's the only MDI Indian restaurant I'm aware of. Yelp also lists it as a Pakistani, Himalayan and Nepalese restaurant. That's a lot of ground to cover. The Royal Indian staff was friendly to deal with. Our family order included Butter Lobster, Chicken Tikka Masala, Saahi Paneer and the House Specialty Jackfruit Curry. Everything was decent, but seemed a couple steps down from our favorite Indian restaurants in Connecticut. The Butter Lobster sauce is closer to the Chicken Tikka Masala sauce that we're used to from CT Indian restaurants than Royal Indian's Chicken Tikka Masala sauce is. Royal Indian's tikka masala sauce was coarser, more marigold and more rustic than the smooth, red-orange version we see in Connecticut. The flavor was fair, but didn't connect with me. The Butter Lobster sauce was smoother and had a red-orange color, but it was a bit too acidic for my tastes. The chicken itself was fine. Some of the lobster was a bit overcooked and some was right on. The Saahi Paneer had a Korma sauce and house made cheese pieces. It was probably my favorite dish. The Jackfruit Curry was OK. I don't think I've had jackfruit before. It was mild and not very sweet. The consistency was somewhere between roasted cauliflower and pineapple. It had a tendency to separate into strands similar to spaghetti squash. The Jackfruit Curry was an interesting dish and I could eat it again, but I would probably move it to the bottom of my Indian dish rotation. The naan was pretty good. Some of the pieces of papadam lacked the signature crispness. For the most part, there was nothing wrong with our food. It just didn't generate the excitement that we're used to from Indian food.
